USTA State Playoff Results
Three University Club Adult USTA teams competed in
Wilmington in the State Playoffs in November.
The Men’s 40+ 8.5 lost in the finals 1-2 to Asheville. It was
a high quality team we faced, with former college
All-Americans. They went 10-2 in their very difficult
bracket, they were a strong team. The University Club team
went 13-2 in our 15 courts of play in early November.
Unfortunately, the 2 losses were accrued in one match.
For the 3rd straight year, the team played for the 40+ 8.5
Combo title. This is very impressive for a club our size.
Our 7.5 Men’s Combo team and our 6.5 Women’s team
faced some very strong competition. Both teams came
away winning individual courts; all the matches were very
close.
It was a great season for all the teams. To have three
University Club teams in the State Playoffs is an incredible
accomplishment. Thank you captains and players!

The early August handwritten letter shown below from 9-year-old Charlotte Reed, daughter of club members Banning and Allison Reed presented a plaintive plea for a slide at our pool while cautioning that all of her friend’s pools had slides, including North Hills. And while we had considered that pool feature for some time, it nevertheless made us keenly aware of the need for the University Club to continue to offer and provide state-of-the-art features and amenities. Subsequently, a part of our capital budget request for 2017 was a pool slide. Our board of directors considered and approved both an operating and capital budget at the November board meeting. Included in capital budget approvals is a software program that will increase the efficiency of our recordkeeping systems and to allow our members quicker access to information. And we will install a slide for the pool and provide additional shade for the lap pool on the parking lot side. Thank you Charlotte for helping us remain focused on our core mission—to provide a well-priced, family-oriented recreation facility for University faculty, staff and alumni. As noted in another section of this newsletter, the club’s board of directors also approved a slight increase in the monthly dues at the November board meeting. Dues will increase $6/month beginning January 1, 2017. This increase is less than $0.20 per day ($0.197/day) and will keep our dues substantially below that of all other similar clubs in this area. And with that small increase, our dues will remain near the bottom of all clubs nationwide which provide similar recreation and dining venues. Other increases include a $5 per year increase for use of the Fitness Facility (1.3 cents per day increase), and pool guest fee increases of $2 per day so that Monday through Thursday fees become $7 and Friday through Sunday and holidays will be $12 per day. That will still keep us less than some City of Raleigh pools and many club pools in the area. (The board earlier this year removed an isolated statement in one club document that exempted guest fees for out-of-town guests. All guests will now be subject to these fees.) Tennis and golf camp fees will increase by 20% and banquet room rental fees will increase by 5%.
Many of our holiday member events are sold out this year including Thanksgiving Day Dinner last week and Breakfast with Santa on 12.10 but for all events, please ask our staff to put your name on the waiting list. Looking forward to other events in December, we have the UClub’s Rockin’ Holiday Party on Sunday, 12.11 and on January 1, the 11th Annual Polar Bear Plunge and Festivities. This has been a very successful year for us, which we will expand upon at year’s end. As the year closes, we thank all y’all for your support of our club and the suggestions offered to help us make it even better. Albert Weaver III, General Manager
