Metropolitan Community College instructor Brian Hurley was
one of just 22 honorees nationwide to receive the 2019 Dale
P. Parnell Distinguished Faculty award from the American
Association of Community Colleges.
Hurley, cybersecurity program coordinator and a computer
science and information systems instructor, is also an alum of
the college. He was recognized for gathering student and com-
munity feedback and using it to strengthen the CSIS program.
The award also means he goes beyond the basics to ensure
students are successful.
The award is presented to faculty who support students inside
and outside the classroom, participate in college committees,
and go beyond what is required to ensure that students are
successful in their academic endeavors.
Hurley was also the driving force behind MCC’s successful
bid to be named a National Center of Academic Excellence in
Cyber Defense for its cybersecurity program — one of just 70
two-year colleges in the nation to reach that top-tier designa-
tion.
With Hurley’s help, MCC opened a new cybersecurity lab on
the Blue River campus.
He also launched MCC’s student Cybersecurity Club, sponsors
students in the National Cyber League Cyber Competition,
created two information security student intern positions, and
hosts student tours of Cerner Corp.’s Data Center, among other
accomplishments.
The chair of the business technology division at MCC-Blue
River calls him a natural instructor: “Students not only gravi-
tate to Brian, but they come back again and again to share their
successes. His passion shows in the way he pursues opportu-
nities to further a student’s path to either go immediately into a
job or to continue with a higher degree.”

Metropolitan Community College psychology instructor Bob Williams has
developed two games to help students effectively work through the decision-
making process. He calls it “The Athena Program,” named after the Greek goddess
of wisdom.
The games put teams of students in real-life situations and requires them to make
decisions about changing variables within the games. The games are played out
across four boards where students can see the impact of their decisions while
teaching key elements of decision-making skills including critical and creative
thinking. They also help develop leadership and teamwork skills along with
sharpening personal relations and problem solving.
Williams compares the games to a flight simulator for pilots. It creates a safe
environment where students can learn from their mistakes without any real
consequences.
“The idea is to create a program that would help college students work in the
real world,” Williams says. “We try to teach the principles of real-world decision
making so people can learn them and apply them.”

The Borton family had a problem:
because he was born without a left hand,
3-year-old Hudson couldn’t figure out
how to ride his brand-new tricycle. So his
parents turned to MCC’s FabLab for help.
That’s the specialized 3-D printing facility
MCC students use in their engineering
programs.
Engineering technology program
coordinator Mike Cline, instructor Chris Page and MCC student David Valdez put
their skills — and hearts — into designing a custom prosthetic attachment that
would allow Hudson to test out his new wheels. The three completed the design in
less than two days, then used MCC printers to produce the device that would let
Hudson race on his trike for years to come.
“It’s hard to describe what you get out of something like this,” said Valdez. “To see
the look on his face and his parents’ faces brought me a lot of joy.”
Hudson’s parents agree. “The people at MCC didn’t know us. They didn’t have to
do all of this, but they took the time to help us,” Lyndsey Borton, Hudson’s mom,
said. “There’s a lot of craziness in the world right now, and to have people like this
at MCC be so kind … it means so much to our family.”
FACULTY FOCUSUSING THE CLASSROOM TO HELP THE COMMUNITY

credits you need, as well as help with any other items you
need for success.
The labs and facilities provide hands-on experience and are constantly
