In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus said to His
disciples, “For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” The obvious unspoken question to His followers was, “What do you recognize as your treasure?” Jesus preceded this by telling them to go sell their belongings and give alms; for your reward will be “an inexhaustible treasure in heaven that no thief can reach nor moth can destroy.” This unspoken question is still being asked of Jesus’ disciples today: What is our treasure? If we place value on material things like the rich man in last week’s Gospel, then we will spend our lives constantly in search of more possessions. It is unfortunate that we seek our heart’s desire among earthly riches. For when our time comes to leave this world, none of our belongings will come with us. They will all be left behind. If, on the other hand, we heed the message of Jesus, our treasure will be based on the unconditional love of God and sharing that love with others. Only then we will discover our hearts’ true desire. This is the one possession which will bring us home to our eternal salvation.
The second part of this passage deals with being spiritually prepared; “if the master of the house had known the hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.” We Americans are quite future-oriented and usually pride ourselves on being prepared for it. We prepare ourselves for the predictable with a 401k for our retirement; money for the education and marriage of our children; prepaid funeral arrangements upon our death. We also prepare for the uncertainties in life by purchasing various types of insurance policies - health, life, automobile, homeowners - even long-term nursing care insurance. But what about our salvation? How do we plan for that? What steps do we take to prepare for that?
In today’s passage Jesus told His disciples, “Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival.” He was defining “vigilant” not as passively waiting for the master to return, but rather as actively spending that time doing the will of the master. We are reminded that true discipleship calls us to be faithful stewards of our talents and obligations. Yet we do not journey alone. We join other disciples in striving to fulfill God’s mission of loving service. Thus, our relationships with God grow and become an “inexhaustible treasure.” This is a treasure “no thief can reach nor moth can destroy.”
When your time comes, what treasure will you offer to God? Not your wealth, status, or possessions, they will all be left behind. Will God find that you were “vigilant?” How did you respond when you found Jesus hungry, thirsty, sick, lonely, naked, or imprisoned?
