CITY Of kENNESAWgOvERNMENT 101

CLASSThe City Manager’s Office is proud to

introduce a new class called “Government 101: Kennesaw Government Academy.” The 6-week course is scheduled to start July 2018 and is designed to provide an inside look at the day-to-day operations of the City, how it forms partnerships and how management approaches long-range planning.

The class is open to City of Kennesaw residents and business owners and is slated to begin July 17, 2018. Each week the class will focus on one of Kennesaw’s strategic priorities listed in its strategic plan. Students will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on learning activities, network and hear updates from city staff.

Registration for the inaugural class is limited to the first 15 registrants. The class is open to adults ages 18 and over who are residents of the City of Kennesaw or are business owners within the city limits. Class will meet weekly at City Hall from 6:00-7:30 pm. The inaugural class will culminate with a graduation on August 28, 2018. Candidates running for office are ineligible to participate in the class.

To register, please download the application from the “What’s Current” section of the city website, www.kennesaw-ga.gov, or call Miranda Jones at (770) 424-8274 ext. 3017.

“TREEMENDOUS PLAY hOUSES” AT SMITh gILBERT gARDENSSmith-Gilbert Gardens is pleased to

open a new exhibition for summer 2018. “TreeMendous Play Houses: Let your imagination climb” features a series of creative, interactive, outdoor play structures, designed and built by area students and professionals. Presented by Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, the exhibition runs from Tuesday, June 19, through the end of September, and is included in the price of garden admission.

TreeMendous Play Houses began in January 2018, as a design/build competition. Students and professionals were invited to submit fun outdoor play structure designs showcasing creative design and innovations in sustainability, while establishing an interactive connection with nature.

The structures in the exhibition represent the fruits of these design efforts and many hours volunteered for construction. “We are excited to offer Smith-Gilbert Gardens as a new stage for creativity and thinking green,” said Ann Parsons, Executive Director. “This exhibit will capture the imagination of visitors of all ages!”

TRACEY vIARS, kENNESAW CITY COUNCIL Congratulations to Tracey Viars for being newly elected to the City of Kennesaw Council.

Tracey Viars isn’t exactly a newcomer to Kennesaw’s political scene. She’s been serving the city as an “all in” volunteer for 7 years, first as a member of the inaugural Kennesaw Citizens Advisory Committee, then as a 6-year board member of the Kennesaw Downtown Development Authority spending the past 3 years as Chairperson of that group. In addition, she also served as a core team member working between the citizens, city and the consultants on the Livable Centers Initiative study to determine what citizens desired most as the city updated its masterplan.

As a 21-year resident and the owner of a small Kennesaw-based marketing consulting business, with the majority of her clients being in Kennesaw, she says she lives and breathes Kennesaw all day and wouldn’t have it any other way. “I believe my level of approachability and accessibility makes me a strong candidate. It’s allowed me to make strong connections not only with citizens but also with visitors, business owners, staff members and volunteers.” Even working with KSU on public art and music for the city’s food truck event is an opportunity I felt fortunate to be included in.

BUTTERfLY hOUSE OPENS AT SMITh-gILBERT gARDENS

Smith-Gilbert Gardens is excited to announce the opening of their seasonal butterfly exhibition, “A Garden with Wings”, on July 3rd, 2018! The exhibit features a butterfly house where visitors can observe native species including Monarchs, Black Swallowtails, Gulf Fritillaries, Tiger Swallowtails and many more, in all stages of life. Guests will also be inspired by the Southern Living® Pollinator Garden, featuring a variety of butterfly and bee-friendly plants that are suitable for home landscaping. Visit smithgilbertgardens.com or call 770-919-0248 for complete details.

This workshop will be held Sunday, June 10 beginning at 4pm at Core Bodyworks, 4358A Southside Drive, Acworth, GA 30101. The cost is $20 and you will make your own personal remedy to take home.

Bach Flower Remedies were created by Dr. Edward Bach in the 1920s and 1930s. Bach believed that emotional and mental problems were the cause of disease. Bach Flower Remedies consist of 38 different plants and trees that assist the body in returning to a state of balance and peace. Each remedy is associated with a human emotion such as anger, fear, despair, lack of confidence, impatience, or hopelessness. By using a small amount of the flower remedies and taking them several times a day, the body and emotions return to a balanced state and the body is able to heal itself. The remedies are very simple to use.

This Workshop will teach you how to create your own special remedy that addresses your situation. For more information, please visit www.theoaksanctuary.com.

QUALIfIED ChARITABLE

DISTRIBUTIONBY RAYMOND D RhOADES, CPAThe increased standard deduction for all

taxpayers that is effective for 2018 will result in significantly fewer taxpayers who will itemize their deductions. Many more will opt to claim the higher standard deduction, but those who are used to itemizing may need to revise the mechanics of their charitable donations. Claiming the standard deduction means that there is no tax benefit for any of your itemized deductions, including charitable contributions.

A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) is generally a nontaxable IRA distribution made directly by the trustee of your IRA to an organization eligible to receive tax deductible contributions. It is only available to those taxpayers age 70-1/2 and older and does count toward the required minimum distribution (RMD).

The taxpayer must initiate the QCD and give the custodian of their IRA specific instructions as to amount and identification of the charity. The trustee will issue the check payable directly to the charity. When these requirements are met the amount of the QCD is not taxable to the taxpayer but still counts toward meeting your RMD. It is like getting the tax benefit of the charitable contribution while still claiming the full standard deduction.

Because of the paperwork involved, this method is not something that would be used to make a small, one time contribution. For those who are charitably inclined and graciously support a particular charity or church but don’t anticipate being able to itemize, this strategy can realize tax savings. It may take a shift in routine, but those taxpayers who are used to giving weekly or monthly to their church, for example, can fulfill their annual pledge with a single QCD. The IRS does not require a minimum amount to qualify as a QCD, only a maximum allowed amount: $100,000 per year per taxpayer.

You must still have the written acknowledgement from the charity. It is the taxpayer’s responsibility to inform your tax preparer that you made a QCD because the custodians are not required to specifically identify any QCD on the 1099-R form issued at the end of the year.

Note that this strategy is only available with Traditional IRAs. SEP IRAs and SIMPLE IRAs are not eligible to make QCDs.

As a follow up to last month’s a r t i c l e a b o u t words with ancient origins, I thought I would share a few more.

Have you ever wondered about the origin of the word CLUE. This word comes from the Greek myth about

the Minotaur and his maze. According to the story, just before Theseus was to be thrown into the maze, he was given a ball of yard to help him find his way out. In ancient Greek this ball of yarn was known as a “clew”. Theseus unraveled the yarn behind him leaving a trail as he traveled through the maze. After he defeated the Minotaur he was able to follow the yarn back to the beginning to get out. This “clew” then represented following a path to solve a puzzle. The spelling changed later to what we use today.

The next two words, SALARY and SALAD, have a common link. SALARY comes from the Latin word “salarius” that contains the root “sal” which is salt. Salt was very important to Roman soldiers. Some sources say that these men were allotted an amount of money to buy salt. Others state that the men were paid in salt. Regardless, whether they received money or salt, what they were paid became known as a SALARY.

The word SALAD also comes from the Latin “sal” or salt. Romans would put salt on their leaf vegetables because they thought they were bitter. The word literally means salted vegetables.

Every year there is a new h igh schoo l graduating class that embarks on new life choices that will await them. As the 2018 graduating class has thrown up their caps and strutted in their gowns, there are many options to consider. There is joining the work force, attending a four-year college or taking on a new trade or skill.

Cosmetology is a great skill to take on when graduating from high school and blazing a new trail in the real world. There are many great reasons to choose an awarding career as a cosmetologist, and below I have listed 3:

1.You have flexibility in your schedule, you have the option to work part time, or full time, days or evenings. Cosmetologist often build their clientele based off clients that desire to come to you specifically because of your schedule.

2. There is always room for advancement, from education to ownership the possibilities are endless, and this career choice will take you as far as you want to go!!!

3. There is constant advancement and styles are always changing, cosmetology works hand in hand with fashion, which breeds excitement and is sure to never leave you bored.

4. And you can be a licensed and practicing cosmetologist in about one year

ACWORTh BUSINESS ASSOCIATION

DAvE MCCLANAhAN, CfP® PRESIDENT

kENNESAW BUSINESS ASSOCIATION

DAvID PERSSON, PAST PRESIDENTSigns of summer are beginning to pop up

all around us and I, for one, am glad to see them. The grass is finally green again, birds and other wildlife are everywhere during my morning runs, our commutes to work are consistently shorter without all the school traffic, and the evenings stay light so much longer. Summer is the season where our kids get to take

a break, rest their brains, enjoy just being kids for awhile, and recharge before the next school year.

Even when we grow up and start our careers, I don’t think the excitement for summer ever leaves us. We look forward to those summer vacations, the occasional long weekends, and the opportunities to reset and recharge our brains. Sometimes turning our brains off for a few days or taking a step back and looking at our businesses differently is all it takes to re-energize us.

The Kennesaw Business Association does not take a break in the summer and is on a mission to provide programming that will help its’ members re-energize and re-imagine their businesses and careers. The networking calendar for KBA is full this summer and the speakers we have lined up will not disappoint.

Join us on Tuesday, June 12th when motivational speaker and author, Nadia Bilchik, fires up our lunch guests with her Networking for Success secrets. Her goal is to help everyone kick their relationships up a notch and re-imagine the possibilities. Please mark your calendars and join us for this energetic speaker.

We are excited to be hosting our June Alive After Five event at the brand new Governor’s Gun Club in Kennesaw. Come take a tour of this amazing facility and practice those networking skills with the rest of our guests at this popular after hours event. Tuesday, June 19th, from 5:30pm - 7:30am.

If you are an early riser, come network with us at our June 26th Wake Up KBA event at Mission for Life Church in Kennesaw. Please visit the KBA website at www.kennesawbusiness.org for a complete listing of our networking events, community events, and member directory.

I hope you all take a few opportunities to slow down and enjoy all that summer has to offer. Clear your head, clean off your desk, pick up a good book and check out for a minute. Then come back with the energy to re-imagine your possibilities. Happy Summer everyone!

May is in the rear view mirror, summer is upon us, and the Acworth Business Association had one of our best Mays ever! At our monthly luncheon we gave well-deserved scholarships to 6 of our local high school seniors:

Jack Brunswick, Harrison High School; Claudia Checo, North Cobb High School;Ryan Cobelli, Kennesaw Mountain High School; Mallory Dennard, North Cobb Christian; Connor Giresi, Allatoona High School; Mattie Nall, North Paulding High School

We couldn’t be more proud of these young men and women! A massive “Thank You” to every ABA member, and our Sponsors. It is your membership and investment in the ABA that allows us to give back in ways like this, while we elevate your business and the Acworth business community. Our luncheon speaker was State Representative Ed Setzler, and lunch was provided by JD’s Barbecue. We also exchanged several business referrals at our 2 Morning Jolts, and made new business connections at our Alive After Five at Cedar Plantation. Our Women’s Business Network Luncheon was a hit with guest speaker Ellen Kennerly with Kennerly Digital. We are officially on pace to have more members and sponsors in 2018 than ever before!

ABA AND ThE MORNINg JOLTOne of our regular events that I hear

the most positive feedback about is our Morning Jolt. The Jolt is our twice-a-month morning marketing meeting, that is laser focused on giving and receiving referrals. Every Jolt participant gets to share who they want to meet including prospective clients, centers of influence, or other businesses with services they need. Then we make those introductions happen. Many times I have seen first time guests leave with several referrals. Where else can tree trimmers, CPAs, screen printers, mortgage brokers, chiropractors, beauty supplies providers, and many more professionals get to know each other grow one each other’s businesses? If you are a business owner or professional wanting to do business in Acworth, you simply cannot afford not to come to ABA’s Morning Jolt at 7:45am the 2nd and 4th Tuesday mornings every month. The Jolt is hosted by our friends at the Acworth American Legion Post 304 on Main St.

ChIEf’S CORNERBY BILL WESTENBERgER

School’s out and summer vacations are kicking off: pool time, lake time, beach time, mountain time, deck/porch time. Whatever your choice, I hope you have a relaxing time. Don’t, however, be so relaxed that you forget that the governor signed HB673 revising GA code 40-6-241 (Distracted Driving). The new law goes into effect on July 1st. Our department will be making several public service announcements, trying to help you make safe and wise decisions. To summarize:

While operating a motor vehicle on any highway of the state, drivers are prohibited from the following activities with a wireless or stand-alone electronic device:

•Physically holding or supporting a device with any part of their body;

•Writing, sending, or reading any text-based communication (does not apply to voice-based communications that are converted to a text message or the use of the devise for navigation.)

•Watching a video or movie; or•Recording or broadcasting a video.

EXCEPTIONSThe law does not apply when the driver

is: Reporting a traffic accident, medical emergency, fire, actual or potential criminal/delinquent act, or road condition that causes an immediate and serious traffic or safety hazard.

According to the National Safety Council, automotive fatalities topped 40,000 for the last 2 years. One of the biggest contributors is distracted driving. Whether you agree with the law or not, let’s take this seriously and make a positive impact to this statistic. Enjoy your summer and help us help you stay safe! In Humble Service-

YOgA fOR ThOSE OvER 50????

BY LISA BROWNINg, COREBODY WORkS.

If you know me as a teacher, one of my pet peeves is people getting categorized, for our bodies are dynamic, and always changing. So truly, our numerical age is not a factor that we should live by. Although, we do have changes in our body as we age. Acquiring knowledge about those changes, while consistently exercising/moving the body are crucial to avoiding pitfalls.

One of the saddest facts is that our tissue gets brittle as we age! We can keep the muscles supple by consistent movement and good diet. Although, when the joint tissue gets drier, it de-stabilizes the joint. This will cause injury. When we practice yoga, we practice stabilizing joints while they are weight bearing, training muscles to help to do that job, which will keep up strong over the years.

I teach a yoga class that was, years ago, my first “senior”, gentle class. About 5 years ago I renamed it Mindful Yoga. I told this older, strong, consistent group of people that the reason for the name change had to do with how well they listened and learned, as well as how fit they had gotten over a period of time. I wanted them to know that we were not just practicing “easy” asanas, but doing all types of yoga poses, mindfully.

So, if I add an over 50 class or not, you will see many fit, strong 60-80 year olds at Core Bodyworks able to try inversions, arm balances, and move through a Sun Salutation with ease. It most often is possible when you are consistent, and recover healthily. You will also see them do alternate poses when appropriate. They listen to their bodies, ask questions, and learn each time they practice. We talk about why shoulders or wrists may not handle the pressure or repetition that the younger (or not) person beside them may be able to practice. Exercise is stress, good stress. Yoga is a balanced practice, individualized to those that are Mindful.

to provide a variety of outdoor athletic opportunities and events to our community to help get the kids outside, enjoying the fresh air, and bring families together.

Team Acworth and Team Kennesaw faced off again in a rematch battle between the cities, as well as our friends from Powder Springs and Cobb County governments. It was a close one, but Kennesaw again persevered and beat everyone to the finish line.

On Saturday, June 30, we will host our Summer Classic Car Cruise in Historic Downtown Acworth. The event will be from 4:00

CIvIL WAR hISTORY DAY PROgRAM The Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History, in partnership with the

“Friends of Camp McDonald’ group, are hosting a living history program on June 9, from 9:30 am – 5 pm. Interpreters will focus on local history, discussing both a Union and Confederate point-of-view. The program falls near the anniversary of Camp McDonald Day. Established on June 11, 1861, during the beginning of the Civil War, Camp McDonald served as a Confederate training camp for Georgia volunteers. The approximately 60-acre camp encompassed a large portion of present-day downtown Kennesaw.

Visitors will have a chance to interact with costumed living historians and observe hourly weapons demonstrations and drills. A small Federal encampment will be located on the front yard of the Museum while visitors will find the Confederate side at Camp McDonald Park (across from Kennesaw City Hall),

where the “Friends of Camp McDonald” will host their Fourth Annual Camp McDonald Day. Dr. Richard Banz, Museum Executive Director, states, “We plan to explore a more diverse conversation with visitors, more so than perhaps the traditional military history one typically hears. Educators will share stories of Unionist activity in Georgia and regional dissent toward the Confederacy, as well as the roles of women and African-Americans during the war. We will highlight diverging voices of the time, representing both Confederate and Union, to demonstrate the complicated nature of the war and its impact on those in the area.”

Local historian, Michael K. Shaffer, will present lectures at the Museum, titled, “Civil War in Cobb County” at 10 am, “Camp McDonald” at 1 pm, and “Civil War in Georgia” at 3:15 pm. Mr. Shaffer will also lead walking tours of the Camp McDonald Park site. Our youngest visitors will also have a chance to free play with games, toys, and activities from the period and make a cornhusk doll to take home, all facilitated by an educator. The Peachtree Hand Spinners Guild will demonstrate the art of yarn spinning, presenting a regular domestic chore of the period.

The program is free with regular Museum admission. Adults are $7.50, Seniors (60+) are $6.50, and Children (ages 4 – 12) are $5.50. Discounts and coupons do not apply for special events but members enter FREE. The Southern Museum is located at 2829 Cherokee Street in downtown Kennesaw. SPECIAL NEEDS kIDS NEED DANCE!BY CAROL vARgAS

Inclusion. A HUGE positive word. When you have a child with special needs it can be a controversial word.

Many years ago I was looking for something I did not think I would find. I called Great Gig Dance and got a hold of Karen Dettwiller Everhart (who our family still adores to this day). Then she had Dawn Abernathy Parker call me. Before I knew it we registered and was going to give this place a try.

Even when they moved from close to our house to a bit further away, to a larger facility, we stayed because we were hooked. We loved the special needs class and how my kids were able to handle it all. I instantly liked & respected Dawn.

Fast forward to today and the amazing Dale Desirèe that works weekly with ‘Ella. Teachers like Avery Gillham that Jesse grew up watching dance and then become his teacher & mentor. Robert Chabot, Lindsay Fritz, Victoria Everhart, Holly Lynn Culpepper- all the great Ensemble teachers. Tammy Quarles Everhart has always been willing to learn & understand to better work with my two and that says ALOT!

Our studio has a special needs dance class but we also have special needs students in other classes.

I could give a long speech about how important music & dance is to special needs students, and how beneficial it is to them.

Give a dance class a try parents of special needs kids. I know its hard & scary, but with the right teacher & studio, miracles will happen!

Pictured above: Special needs class from NCHS had a field trip and had a blast at Great Gig Dance in May. Pure joy was written on their faces.

TOWN CENTER CID RECEIvES $10.4M gRANT fOR PhASE III Of SOUTh BARRETT RELIEvER PROJECT

Town Center Community Improvement District (CID) is pleased to announce that Phase III of the South Barrett Reliever project has received $10.4M in federal funding from the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC). This is the largest award for a regional roadway project during this funding cycle. The grant was released through ARC’s Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), which allocates federal funds for the construction of high-priority projects.

Since its inception, the Town Center CID has focused on increasing mobility and improving connectivity in the Town Center area. The South Barrett Reliever is a key component to reaching that goal. Once completed, it will offer an alternative route for Barrett Parkway, reducing congestion at the I-75 interchange. It is the Town Center CID’s largest infrastructure project to date, with total cost of the first three phases amounting to more than $45M.

“This award is a major step forward in completing our funding goal for Phase III,” said Tracy Rathbone, executive director of the Town Center CID. “Everyone who lives, works in, or commutes through Town Center has experienced the congestion on Barrett Parkway. Soon, the South Barrett Reliever will ease some of this headache, offering more options and reducing traffic. We are excited to be able to offer a solution to the thousands of drivers in our district each day.”

The South Barrett Reliever Phase III includes a bridge over I-75 and the newly constructed managed lanes. It will widen, realign, and extend Shiloh Valley Drive across the interstate to a widened Roberts Court, forming a continuous road. When complete, the project is expected to provide mobility relief, improve public safety, and reduce congestion by more than 22%. Preliminary Engineering and Design is currently underway, and Phase III is expected to break ground in 2020.

Currently, this multi-phased project is in the final stages of Phase II, which includes the realignment of Barrett Lakes Boulevard at Shiloh Valley Drive with a two-lane roundabout. It also provides critical safety improvements, crosswalks, a five-foot-wide sidewalk, lighting and landscaping. These features will also extend to Phase III. The CID expects Phase II to be completed this summer.

WE ARE LOOkINg fOR “SNOTTY” PEOPLE

DR CRIS EATON WELShAt Eaton Chiropractic we are taking

wellness to another level.. in addition to our five pillars of health (water, nutrition, exercise, community and a properly functioning nervous system) we now offer halotherapy (Halo is Greek for salt.) Our salt therapy room is similar to spending time in the salty sea air, which offers many more benefits than just relaxation on the beach.

The benefits of salt therapy are wide-ranging. Salt levels affect our cell activity, energy and blood sugar levels. A natural disinfectant, salt is antimicrobial, and antibacterial. Salt comes in empty processed forms or healthier pure sea salt (Himalayan and Dead Sea salt) that contain 84 elements and trace elements found in the human body. Dry salt air is more powerful than moist air.

The negatively charged ions in salt improve our health and mood. Inhaling particles may reduce inflammation and mucus in the lungs, improving respiratory conditions such as asthma, allergies, bronchitis, sinus congestion and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Scientific studies show that people with asthma and other ailments breath easier after halotherapy.

The calming and detoxifying effects of halotherapy can support the immune, nervous and lymphatic systems. Additional benefits are reduced stress and headaches, increased energy, and better sleep patterns. Salt ions purify the air and may increase lung capacity and reduce physical ailments for adults, children and athletes. Treatments are recommended to help keep the body healthy during flu or allergy seasons.

Skin conditions can also be improved with halotherapy (psoriasis, rashes, eczema, acne). Table salt, sodium chloride, is dehydrating, but pure mineral salts have natural moisturizing properties and support the skin’s water balance and barrier function by attracting moisture to the skin. Minerals are necessary for cell function and detoxification, so mineral salts have strong rejuvenating properties.

Experts note that the concentration of particles in halotherapy is about 10 to 15 times the concentration found by the sea. A 30-minute session is equal to three days by the sea. “Kinetically activated dry salt particles are like an army of janitors helping to detox the respiratory system,” explains Ulle Pukk, founder of Salt Chamber Inc. In our facility we have top of the line halogenator that processes salt into microparticles dispersed in controlled amounts.

Similar to a meditation session, you breath deeply while listening to calming music and focusing on the natural beauty of the salt crystals. The pure environment is precisely balanced with 40 to 50 percent humidity and 70 to 75 degrees F temperatures. Breathing salty air is a refreshing ritual to add to your wellness routine. Experience natural detoxification and see for yourself if you breathe easier. Call the office and schedule your first session for half off our normal fees. 770-429-9733

PEDIATRIC EYE EXAMSPREvENTION AND AWARENESS

DR DYLAN REACh, ACWORTh fAMILY EYE CARE

When it comes to pediatric healthcare, parents almost always have a pediatrician and dentist in mind. However, growing children need thorough, comprehensive care for every aspect of their health – including their eyes. Eye care is usually overlooked in pediatric medicine because parents can be unaware of the importance of their children’s eyes, thinking eye care is a concern exclusive to adults. With this lack of health education, many parents consult eye specialists when their children are already experiencing problems and symptoms such as poor, blurry vision or recurring dry, itchy eyes.

Contrary to popular belief, eye disorders among children are very common. The American Optometry Association (AOA) estimates that 1 in every 4 children has a vision-related condition. If left undiagnosed and untreated, this serious condition could hinder a child’s normal growth and development. Pediatric eye exams are just another important step in making sure that children are happy and healthy.

Common vision-related problems that can be found in children include nearsightedness, f a r s i g h t e d n e s s a n d a s t i g m a t i s m . Nearsightedness is the inability to see distant objects clearly. With farsightedness, vision is blurry when looking at objects up-close. (However, mild farsightedness can be normal in young children.) Astigmatism is irregularly shaped eyes resulting in blurred vision.

Amblyopia, which is normally referred to as “lazy eye”, is also common. It is characterized by poor, underdeveloped vision in one eye. If left untreated, the child’s brain will recognize the better-seeing eye as stronger and essentially stop using the poorer eye.

Many of these vision disorders are more difficult to treat once a child is fully-grown. Prompt and early diagnosis is crucial to ensuring your child’s vision to be healthy for a lifetime.

Preschool is a critical time for learning, and sensory adaptation cannot develop without the help of two healthy eyes. We recommend scheduling your child’s first eye exam with us as early as the age of three.

Eighty percent of all learning is performed through vision. Other symptoms of learning-related vision problems include eyestrain resulting to headache, short attention span, difficulty of identifying objects, poor eye-hand coordination and developmental delay. Do not wait for these symptoms to impede your child’s learning capability.

Pediatric Eye Exams can provide correct diagnosis, and proper treatment, whether it be glasses, contacts, or vision therapy, to align with your child’s needs. Help your child to reach his highest potential by providing a clear vision and future – call us today at 770-974-3153.

BIg ShANTY BASSMASTERS AT LAkE hARTWELLThe Big Shanty Bassmasters traveled to Lake Hartwell this past weekend May 19-20.

Weather forecast was for that typical early summer tropical mugginess but for the most part it wasn’t too bad. We had clouds and drizzle Saturday am and partly cloudy skies Sunday. Air temps were in the Low 80’s as was the water, and the clarity was clear. Everyone caught fish but not a lot a heavy weights brought to the scales, it seems that these fish had just come off the beds and were staging for the post spawn, but were not feeding yet. Day one saw Michael Miranda on the Co Angler side win with a 5 fish limit weighing in at 5lbs 12 oz. and Danny Perdue on the Boater side with 8lbs 3oz. Day 2 had Sammy Young on the Co Angler side winning with a 5 fish limit at 6lb 06 oz and Scott Bates on the Boater side with 6lbs 7 oz. All anglers reported that the majority of their catch were on shakey head finesse jigs and worms fished around secondary points and pockets leading from the spawning areas. The Club had a very good time of fun and fellowship.

Our next meeting is June 2nd at Provinos Restaurant 7pm, on Barrett Pkwy and our next tournament is June 9th at lake Chickamauga. CONgRATULATIONSETO hONORS NEW BLACk BELTS

On Saturday May 5th, ETO Martial Arts and Fitness inducted 8 new black belts into the ETO Black Belt Circle. The new black belts demonstrated the last of their requirements during a 3 1/2 hour physical testing period. Their execution of technique, forms, weapons, board breaking, grappling, sparring and overall stamina was judged by a panel of ETO senior black belt instructors. In addition to the physical requirements, each recommended black belt had to submit character recommendation letters and essay. The test ended with a special ceremony in which portions of each black belt essay was shared with the audience. Many of the writings acknowledged the support of family, friends and instructors. Each essay was a unique tale of the incredible journey from ETO white belt to ETO black belt! ETO is proud to welcome the following students into the ETO Black Belt Circle: Isabelle Welsh (1st Degree), Gavin Tica (1st Degree), Matthew Gilliam (1st Degree), Michael Krantz (1st Degree), Ethan Nunez (2nd Degree), John Ruechel (2nd Degree), Xandy Edwards (4th Degree) & Rob Gilliam (4th Degree). AvA WRIghT hONORED WITh gOLD PRESIDENT’S vOLUNTEER SERvICE

Ava Wright (14), Lost Mountain Middle School student and Student Council President, has been honored with six volunteer service awards as part of the National Charity League (NCL), including the Gold President’s Volunteer Service Award for 100 or more hours of volunteer service in a year.

The President’s Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) recognizes citizens of the United States who have achieved the required number of hours of service over a 12-month time period. Along with the ultimate honor of presidential recognition, recipients receive a personalized certificate, an official pin, medallion and a congratulatory letter from the president of the United States.

In addition to the PVSA, Ms. Wright was also honored by NCL for achieving the highest number of philanthropic service hours for her class (2022) and she received: the Hourglass award for 100 combined hours of philanthropic service; the Mission Bell award for volunteering 50 hours to one charity (Leukemia

and Lymphoma Society); the Silver award for volunteering 25 hours to one charity (Hunger Doesn’t Take a Break); and the Mother/Daughter award given mother/daughter teams within the chapter who earn 40 philanthropic service hours together. All award hours are measured over a 12-month period and designated based on cumulative hours.

“I really enjoy giving my time to charities where I can work face to face with those that are in need. We have so many of these amazing organizations in our community and that’s what makes our area so special. I am extremely honored to receive the Gold President’s Volunteer Service Award and I look forward to continuing my volunteer efforts through high school,” said Ms. Wright.

Ms. Wright will be an incoming freshman at Harrison High School this fall, where she has been accepted into its bioengineering STEM program. She was also recently accepted into and will attend the Naval Academy’s STEM program.

BIg ShANTY SChOOL NEWS

Big Shanty Intermediate had a huge success at their 2nd Annual Garden Gala on May 3rd. The students performed songs, enjoyed an amazing petting zoo, ate delicious smores, displayed their beautiful art, and many students shared their creative writing skills in the form of poetry. The students celebrated their wonderful gardens, paths, and dynamic nature trail with their parents on this fun filled night! All the students in grades 3-5 participated as they showcased

their school. ASPIRE stands for “A Sensory Path to Inclusive Relationships for Everyone.” The Third

graders designed and built a sensory pathway and gardens that have particular benefits for our special needs students. This project provided an immersive STEM experience for our 200 third grade students who have been deeply involved in the research, design, planning, and construction of our sensory path and gardens. The fourth graders developed a “Bee Garden” to help the declining bee population in this area. The students dug, planted new plants, painted the designated area, and researched about the importance of bees in our community.

The fifth graders designed Watershed Wonders. Throughout the school year, the students have been stewards of the Big Shanty watershed, which includes the school campus and the Nature Trail. On these adventurous Watershed Wonder Wednesdays, they collected data on the air temperature, ground temperature, altitude, and observations of the change on our “adopted” site over time. They also observed the erosion problem on the trail and thought up possible solutions. Pictured above: Dr. Kelly Luscre, Principal, with two choral studuents.

CONgRATULATIONSTaylor Baxley was recently named the

state winner of the 24th Annual Georgia Farm Bureau (GFB) High School Art Contest. A senior at Kennesaw Mountain High School, Baxley received $100 for being the top winner from GFB’s District 3 and an additional $250 cash prize as the state winner. Baxley is the daughter of Laurie Baxley and Mark Baxley.

PALMER MIDDLE SChOOL NEWSPalmer Middle School students grew herbs in class this spring – but what to do during the

summer break? A field trip for the We Grown HOPE project to the KSU Farm nearly derailed for the class when bus problems arose. Teacher Ms. Lamonica Green, Palmer’s Teacher of the Year, stalled while volunteers from the KSU Farm, KBA and Tazikis Mediterranean Grill sought transport for these students. KBA member Joe Badgett, owner of Speedy Wiz Transport in Kennesaw, quickly found a large van, driver and got the kids to the garden in time to tour the 26 acre farm, and move the plants into their new bed in the herb garden. Thanks to Speedy Wiz for saving the day!

Tazikis’ chef quickly brought the planned restaurant visit to the garden for a picnic instead, and coordinator Rachael Cory and manager Chad Reynolds explained how the restaurant would buy the herbs from the students in the fall to use in the Tazikis menu for dips, pastas and wraps.

Several plants and the flocks of chickens on the farm grabbed the kids’ attention as student volunteers guided them through the garden’s ecosystem of honeybees, pond, orchard and high tunnels where produce is sheltered over the winter. KSU students volunteer and are paid workers at the garden that produces hydroponic lettuce and herbs, tomatoes and greens for the Commons cafeteria.

Growing organically, with natural pest management and using composting, mushroom culture and other newer farming techniques gives KSU great farm-to-table opportunities. For more information, see WeGrowHope.com and the Michael A. Leven School of Culinary Sustainability and Hospitality at uc.kennesaw.edu/levenschool/hickory_grove_farm.php.

ThE NEWEST IN SCAMS fOR SENIORS

BY EMILY vARNER, ORCUTT LAW People like to think that they can avoid

or out smart a scammer by just hanging up on a weird call. Unfortunately, it is not that easy anymore. Scammers are sophisticated, and with the internet being readily available, even the most novice scammer can be successful. We make it easy for scammers to get our information, because we give it to them, without them even asking. When a scammer reaches out to you, they already know your basic information. They likely know your name, number, address, age, and our relatives’ information from Facebook, dating sites, and other social media sites.

Most people know to look out for IRS, Social Security, and Medicare scams. However, some common scams target seniors in new ways. First, the online dating scam. It is a phishing expedition to get information and possibly money. The online dating scammers gain your trust. They typically communicate exclusively through emails or texts. This is a red flag. However, some individuals do not recognize that the person who they are interested in dating may be using them for personal information or money.

Second, is the child/grandchild in trouble scam. The scammers claim that your family member is in jail or will be arrested if money is not sent to them right away. Scammers have great story telling skills and will come up with reasons why their voice sounds different, or they may impersonate a cop, attorney, or bail bondsmen. They pull on your heartstrings and make you feel guilty for not helping your family. If anyone pressures you into paying money or wiring them money immediately, this is a red flag. Get their information and research before you taking any action.

The best way to avoid these scams is to listen to your gut. If it doesn’t seem right or is too good to be true, it probably is. If you are concerned that you or a loved one have been a victim of a scam, contact your local law enforcement agency and consider consulting an attorney.

LEANDRO POLANCO, ALSO kNOWN AS kID DYNAMOKid Dynamo - his name says it all- full

of energy, laughter and love for all those around him. He was a dynamic personality that we will miss tremendously. We lost not only a great man but a legend in his own right. Kid Dynamo has been locking (a style of dance is based on the concept of locking/freezing movements) for many years and was considered a legend. He has performed with and for renowned artists such as Diana Ross, Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine, Iris Chacon, KC and the Sunshine Band, Kool and the Gang, and Vicki Sue Robinson. He was one of the main choreographers of the NYC-based and internationally toured show, “Break! The Urban Funk Spectacular.” Kid Dynamo has also appeared in commercials for Coca-Cola, 7-Up, and Hershey Candy Bar

Kid Dynamo loved our community and shared his love through the art of dance; passing his legacy to all generations and inspired them to continue their dreams. He loved teaching kids at the Rockwell Dance Academy and was always their biggest cheerleader- finding ways to make them feel confident in their dancing skills and to always challenge themselves.

We lost a wonderful soul on May 4th and we will miss his smile so very much. Rest in Peace, Kid Dynamo.

MARIETTA BUSINESS ASSOCIATION MAY LUNCh ShARON MASON: UPDATES fROM ThE COBB ChAMBER

Sharon Mason, President and CEO of the Cobb County Chamber of Commerce, shared her insights into the future of Cobb County at the Marietta Business Association monthly lunch event at the Radisson Hotel in Marietta. Her talk took us back to the recession in 2009, where we had 9.6% unemployment, and Cobb just wasn’t a cool place to live for young people.

Transitioning from the VP of the Chamber into COO, Mason was an integral part of the team that worked to create a better plan. The goal was to make Cobb County the best place to live, work and play. A few of the initiatives to achieve this were:

Project Dobbins - to protect the 20,000 jobs and the impact those jobs have on our economy; Comprehensive Job Creation Plan; Workforce Development; Cobb Edge (now Select Cobb); IgniteHQ in Marietta

Through these initiatives, Cobb has seen an increase of 22,253 new jobs, with $2.2 billion in private investments and a 26% increase in under 40 (millennials) population. Much of this has been accomplished through partnerships with business associations, Marietta City Economic Development team, Marietta City Schools College and Career Academy, CHOA, and others. Mason is committed to these and the new initiatives that have made, and will continue to make Cobb County THE best place to live, work and play.

The next MBA meeting will be held on Monday June 25 at the Radisson Hotel, Marietta. Register online at mariettabusiness.biz.

CIvIL WAR ON ThE hOMEfRONTVisitors to Marietta’s William Root House Museum & Garden will have the opportunity

to see the home as it may have appeared at the time of the American Civil War. The house, which was used as a hospital for wounded Confederate soldiers, was abandoned by the Root family in June 1864. Left to the advancing Union Army, the home survived the burning of downtown Marietta by Union troops in November 1864. During this special exhibit, the ransacked parlor and dining room will show what the Root family may have left behind after fleeing from Marietta. Guided tours will focus on the experience of the Root family and life in Marietta during the Civil War. The exhibit is included in the cost of regular museum admission.

This exhibit will be on display at the William Root House Museum & Garden through July 7, 2018. For more information call 770-426-4982 or visit roothousemuseum.com. The Root House is located at 80 N. Marietta Parkway, Marietta, 30060.
