Your 2019 Bowl Guide
Here in chronological order are all the games with kickoff dates and times, TV coverage and the
LINE’s reliable predictions for margins of victory and final scores.
Plus our annual free advice: We note that history tells us that choosing the Underdog and
taking the points seems to be a slightly better bet during bowl season. Underdogs often do
cover the spread, but since that’s not dependable for any specific game you’d need to bet
almost every game. But more importantly, who knows which aspects of each team will actually
show up for a bowl game 2-4 weeks later? Keep in mind too that these are mainly 18-to-22-
year-old boys who are inherently unreliable and distracted, and also that several of the best
players may skip out of their teams’ bowl games as they did last year. So do yourself and your
“plus one” a favor: Instead of giving the bookies some extra holiday cash, go out for a
nice dinner. It’s probably a better return on your investment.
Enjoy it while it lasts, we’re predicting some close games! How close?
the LINE predicts that out of these Forty-Two (!) games: o 13 (31%) will be decided by a Field Goal or less, and o 30 (71%) will be decided by a Touchdown or less.
The four largest predicted blowouts, each by more than two touchdowns are . . . o #20 Appalachian State over UAB by 18 ½
o Central Florida (UCF) over Marshall by 17 ½ . . . and both FCS Semi-Final Games this Saturday:
o #1 Seed North Dakota State over #5 Seed Montana State by 15 ½ o #2 Seed James Madison over #3 Seed Weber State by 14 ½
So—what if we did have that 8-Team Playoff some people want?
Here’s how the LINE projects that might that turn out this year, based as usual a) on the entire season to date (the “Body of Work”) and b) on how these teams have been playing recently (“Who’s Hot?”). Note that with no upsets in the First Round below, both versions devolve to what we have in the CFPC Playoff, down to the actual pairings. Enjoy!
