Greetings: December has rolled around once again and time for another Newsletter from Your Foundation. This Newsletter will have many repeated items and reminders I have relayed to you over the past four years. An explanation for all the reminders and repeat information is given at the end of this Newsletter. December newsletters very often will feature a Norwegian Christmas tradition. Since food is the main focus of any Norwegian gathering I have chosen this concept as my Christmas highlight. Why do Norwegians bake seven different kinds of cookies for Christmas??????? My research did give me some information where our mothers, grandmothers and great grandmothers found their recipes (a book by Hanna Winsnes) adding their own little touches and passing these down from generation to generation. I have been “Googling” and all I have found is, that at one time 14 different types were made, one for each day of the Holiday season. Today seven will suffice. Another source said the amount was always uneven, in former times there were as many as nine or eleven kinds made and was a status symbol that indicated the family’s wealth. I have not just been Googling for information but asking around to friends (a couple were actually born in Norway and had never heard of this tradition) YOUR FOUNDATION NEWS December, 2018 January February 2019 ISSUE 18 Thelma Lysne, Editor HANNA WINSNES 1789-1872 Poet, novelist – Non- fiction writer First female novelist in Norway Hanna was born in Bragernæs, (Drammen) Norway. STAMPS

It would not be an Issue of the Foundation News if I did not mention the easiest and best way of contributing to your Foundation. With Christmas and the advent of “getting in touch” with relatives and friends you should have stamps to save and pass on to your Foundation.

STAMPS ISSUED THE YEAR YOU WERE BORN In my quest in looking for the 2018 Christmas

stamp found they have pictured all the stamps issued for 2018 and did not find a special one for Christmas. What I did find when I went to google for “2018 Canadian Stamps/Canada”, on the middle top of this site there was a box “FIND STAMPS BY YEAR”. For fun I googled the year Jack was born and the year I was born and there I found Canadian stamps that had been issued in those years. This Newsletter I am featuring those Stamps and leave you the task of checking out what stamps were issued in your birth year.

One significant note was the number of stamps and the cost of a 1927 stamp and reduction and cost of the 1934 stamps. This I must presume was due to the Depression 1929 – 1939.

JACK – 1927

THELMA 1934

If your Lodge is unable to hold a Foundation Fund Raising evening saving your stamps is a great way to support your Foundation. You could make it a fun project for members. Every other month offer a small prize (a coffee mug, a note pad, a purse calendar, etc.) purchased from the $1.00 store to the person who brings in the most stamps. You may not think it is very much but in 2017 the total for stamps collected was $964.07. A big Tusen Takk to Hardanger 07-142 in Kelowna for their very large stamp donation in 2017. Since its inception, you, the Lodge members have collected a total of $6,983.87 in stamps. Tore Pettersen reminded me that Jack Lysne had a contact in Victoria in the early 90’s so the stamp program has been in existence for a long period of time. I checked with Russell Wiigs and he took over the collection of stamps around 2008.

WHO DO I HELP WITH MY DONATION?

The above article tells you one of the easy ways you can help your Sons of Norway Foundation in Canada provide funding for:

An original application came from North Star Lodge No. 63 in Nanaimo, B.C. They made a request for a Norwegian Language game. The intent of this game is to practice their language skills in a fun and interactive way person to person. Check out the October Issue of the Leiflette, page 5 for a picture of members playing this game.

I have personally received a grant from the Foundation to upgrade my Hardanger skills in order to pass on to students.

There are many more Lodge related activities promoting the Culture, History and Norwegian related activities your lodge can request a grant for the promotion of our Norwegian Heritage to members of the Community.

FOUNDATION WORKING FOR YOU

PLATINUM PLUS $5,000.00

In May of 1999, the incentive was introduced in the form of Recognition Pins. The first pins were presented in 1999 with qualification retroactive to the Foundation’s 25th Anniversary in 1996. The decision was made in 2007 to introduce a fourth level, the Platinum Pin for donations. Seventeen (17) Lodge members have received their Platinum pins. This programme proved to be popular so in 2017 a further level was approved by the Foundation Board of Directors, the Platinum Plus, for donations of $5,000.00.

Pictured above, along with the four levels of Recognition Pins, is the new Platinum plus Pin. There have been two (2)

Tusen Takk to all Lodge members

who have sent good wishes and

encouragement.

You may have realized from the March/April/May Newsletter that I have a passion for swans when I wrote my “Swan Song” from the Foundation. At that time my life was a bit cloudy. Since that time I have had good reports from my oncologist and am working with more strength.

My husband Jack at age 91, is failing and I need all my strength and dedication to help keep him as healthy as possible. Adding the stress and time in research, writing and editing (about 40 - 60 hours every month) the Foundation Newsletter does not contribute to my health issues.

I have tried in this letter to report and give you a brief synopsis of how much you have donated over the years and who it helps. I hope this last Foundation News has made you aware of what the Foundation does for you and your Lodge.

Carry on supporting your Foundation. Thelma Lysne, Editor
