Lecture FacultyJon Chilingerian, Ph.D.An international lecturer, Dr. Chilingerian is founding Director of the Executive MBA for Physicians program at Brandeis and Program Director of the Brandeis Health Leadership Program, a one week residential course sponsored by the American College of Surgeons. In conjunction with Tufts Medical School, Dr. Chilingerian is also Director of the largest MD-MBA program in the United States. Jody Hoffer Gittell, Ph.D.A professor of management at Brandeis University’s Heller School for Social Policy and Management, Dr. Gittell is a leading expert on relational coordination and organizational performance. Her work is based on the theory that highly interdependent work is most effectively coordinated through relationships of shared goals, shared knowledge and mutual respect, supporting sufficiently frequent, timely and accurate problem-solving communications. “This is the essence of good patient care,” according to Dr. Gittell. “The

professional relational interaction between members of the health care team is the bedrock of delivering quality medicine. Getting patients well, out of bed and home safely can’t be done by loners.” She is co-founder of Relational Coordination Analytics Inc., a group offering measurement and interventional support to organizations seeking to improve their performance. Before joining Brandeis Dr. Gittell taught at the Harvard Business School. She is author of Transforming Relationships for High Performance published by Stanford University Press.

Helen Riess, M.D.Dr. Riess is Chief Scientist and Chairman of Empathetics. She is Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and Director of the Empathy and Relational Science Program at Massachusetts General Hospital. She is a core member of the Consortium for Research on Emotional Intelligence in Organizations (CREIO) and faculty of the Harvard Macy Institute. Dr. Riess is a psychiatrist who developed an empathy training approach based on research in the neurobiology and physiology of empathy that has been

rigorously tested in pilot studies and a randomized, controlled trial at Massachusetts General Hospital. She completed her residency and Chief Residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Dr. Riess has devoted her career to teaching and research in the art and science of the patient-doctor relationship. Dr. Riess received her M.D. from Boston University School of Medicine and her B.A. from Wesleyan University.
