Rabbi David Silverberg www.vbm-torah.org Toward the beginning of Parashat Vayeshev, the Torah tells of the preferential treatment that Yaakov afforded to Yosef, igniting the ire and envy of the other sons. The Torah makes special mention of the “ketonet pasim,” a certain kind of fan-cy garment that Yaakov made for his beloved son (37:3). The phrase “ketonet pasim” is commonly translated as “coat of many colors,” and the Radak indeed interprets the word “pasim” as “stripes,” and explains that each stripe was a different color, such that the cloak was especially colorful and exquisite. Rashi cites a Midrashic interpretation of “ketonet pasim” (from Bereishit Rab-ba 84:8), suggesting that we read the word “pasim” as an acrostic for the words “Potifar,” “socharim” (merchants), “Yishmaelim,” and “Midyanim.” According to the Midrash, the cloak’s name portended the ordeals that Yosef would later endure at the hands of the Yishmaelite and Midyanite merchants who would buy and sell him as a slave, and Potifar, who had him imprisoned. Why did the Midrash look for an allusion to Yosef’s travails in the special cloak he received from his father? And how might this Midrashic reading of “ketonet pasim” be associated with the plain meaning of the term? One possibility, perhaps, is that the Sages of the Midrash used Yosef’s striped cloak as a symbol of the complex, multifaceted nature of life. Like the “ketonet pasim,” life has many “colors,” and not all of them are bright and beautiful. The jour-ney through life takes us through many different stages, some happier than others, some more productive than others, some more formative than others, and some more difficult than others. We hope and strive to make our lives a “ketonet pasim,” a mag-nificent period of joy and meaningful achievement, but we must remember that for that to happen, it must be comprised of “pasim,” of many different “stripes,” many of which may not, on their own, be appealing or slightly. And nobody’s life best exempli-fied this truism than that of Yosef, who was tenderly raised by a loving, doting father, only to be cruelly banished from his home into a life of slavery and imprisonment, a period of suffering which was followed by a meteoric rise to fame, power and prestige. Chazal thus enlisted Yosef’s “ketonet pasim” as a symbol for the different stages of his life, the many different “colors” that he experienced. All told, his life was a re-markable success, as he rescued an entire region of the world from starvation and led his family onto the path that would lead to their miraculous emergence as God’s spe-cial nation. And our Sages pointed to his “ketonet pasim” as a symbol of the many dif-ferent turbulent stages he had to pass through in his journey toward this life of suc-cess, urging us to draw courage, comfort and inspiration as we go through the differ-ent “stripes” of our lives in the hopes of weaving a magnificent “cloak” of happiness and fulfillment.
