What is your favorite color? If you answered
“blue” then you are in good company. The
reason being that in this week’s Parsha of
Shelach we are taught the Mitzva of Tzitzis
which require our four cornered garments to have blue
threads attached to them. When we look at our Tzitzis it
reminds us of our obligation to observe all of the Mitzvos.
The Gemara (Sotah 17a) asks why is blue singled out from
all the varieties of colors? Because blue resembles the sea,
and the sea resembles heaven, and heaven resembles the
divine throne, as it is written: “They saw the G‑d of Israel,
and at His feet was as it were a paved work of sapphire
stone, like the very heaven for clearness." (Shemos 24:10).
Today the Mesorah of the exact identity and production of
the specific blue dye is uncertain and most people use all
white threads. However the lesson of the color blue is a
powerful reminder that there is a message of Avodas
Hashem in everything we see in this world. May they all
be joyous and alive with color!

Protecting Israel, Protecting Our People YIDB members and their IDF grandchildren
Hanna Erdfarb, granddaughter of Charlotte
Goldsmith was raised in a Zionistic NJ family.
The topic of aliyah was always discussed by
the Erdfarb family. After attending several
summer programs in Israel, Hanna became
infatuated with the idea of joining the IDF.
With her parents approval, Hanna enlisted as a
lone soldier back in 2012. It was difficult for
Hanna at first. She was the only American
among all Israeli soldiers. Her Hebrew was
adequate; certainly not fluent. Hanna missed
her family and friends. To her credit, Hanna
was determined and persevered. Hanna was
part of “Garin Tzabar,” a group of young, Orthodox lone
soldiers who were housed on Kibbutz Maaleh Gilboa for the
duration of their army service. Each soldier was "assigned" a
family on the kibbutz. Hanna's family were warm and loving and
accepted her as one of their own. Charlotte could share that
Hanna achieved the rank of First Sergeant in the Electronic
Warfare Unit of the Communications Corps. The Unit is tasked
with jamming and evading enemy communications, although
how they do that is, of course, classified. Hanna served for three
years in the IDF. Her family was very proud of her service,
although Charlotte maintains she was Hanna's biggest fan.
Hannah is now taking a well deserved year off to travel before
attending university. Looking back over Hannah’s time in the
Israeli army Charlotte admitted she was selfishly concerned over
Hanna’s safety yet proud of her accomplishments. She admired
her granddaughter’s strength, her tenacity and more importantly
her desire to protect Israel and her people.
