Rabbi’s Message
In this week’s Parsha of Va’eschanan, Moshe Rabeinu recounts the giving of the Torah at
Har Sinai and dramatically repeats the Ten Commandments. Not by coincidence, this Shabbos is always Shabbos Nachmu, the first of the seven “Shabbosos of Consolation” after the destruction of the Beis Hamikdash on Tisha B’Av. The Tzadik Rabbi Yisroel Hopstein the Koznitzer Magid (1737-1814) points out a very interesting detail which underscores a fascinating connection between Vaeschana and Nachamu. On Tisha B’Av we were forbidden from Torah study (because this causes us much joy) so to compensate - our connection to Torah is immediately renewed on Shabbos Va’eschanan – bringing us Nachamu much comfort and consolation! May our Torah studies be renewed with even greater enthusiasm and commitment than ever before!

MEET YOUR NEIGHBOR!......Anita Kaminetsky 93 1/2 years young! Anita Kaminetsky nee Mendlowitz was born in Scranton, PA to Ruth and Morris Mendlowitz. She married her husband, Alex Kaminetsky, A’H, (pictured on the left) on May 10, 1944. They set up their first home (one of many) in Worcester, MA where Alex was an educator. Anita’s life with her husband Alex was much like Willie Nelson’s song “On the Road Again.” Each time, Alex received a better job, it meant Anita had to pack up her family lock, stock and barrel. Anita often compared her husband’s life as an educator to that of a Rabbi; learn how to do one job well and you learn how to pack! True to this saying, the next stop on their travels was Hartford, CT. Here their first child, Sharon (Jaffa) was born. Three years later, our own, Rena (Okun) was born. Next, the Kaminetsky’s relocated to New Britain, CT, where their only son, Simon was born. Then it was onto to Atlanta, GA where Anita gave birth to daughter number three, Barbara (Leifer). Denver, CO was their next home and you guessed it, their last baby, Phyllis (Budnitz) was born. Anita left her trademark wherever she lived; It became known if your
trip did not include visiting, eating or sleeping at the Kaminetskys, your trip was not complete. In addition, to raising her family plus entertaining and hosting people in her home, Anita found the time while living in Denver to become a bat mitzvah teacher to numerous children from Beth Joseph Synagogue. Pittsburgh, PA. was the next city to welcome the Kaminetsky’s. Here Anita coined the phrase you always get two for the price of one. Eventually, Anita and her husband moved to NY where Alex, at this point, was employed by the The Board of Jewish Education. Over the course of her lifetime, Anita became very involved in Emunah culminating with her being elected as President of her chapter here in Deerfield Beach. During her presidency, it was not unusual for Anita, herself, to entertain her ladies either by talking on almost any topic or singing her “mean” version of Yossele Rosenblatt or Kusevitsky. She learned chazannus while she was sick with rheumatic fever as a child. To pass the time, she would listen to these great cantors on a Victrola. Anita claims her happiest move was here to Deerfield Beach and YIDB. Even with all her accomplishments, I think Anita was proudest of her daughter, Rena, being the wife of our past President of YIDB. Each time she would come into the office, she would smile at me with that special gleam in her eye reminding me “You know, Eli is the president and my son-in-law. My daughter, Rena, is his wife, and the first lady! ” She is blessed to be the grandmother of 20 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren, 3 great–great-children with one more on the way in the fall!
