By Christy Parker

Youghal's lengthy dream of a marina has ebbed a step closer withCork County Council's decision to offer 10 acres of land at theSlob Bank for lease or sale. The local authority invited tenders forthe project in a notice in last Friday's (April 22nd) through theIrish Examiner. The notice further encourages the provision of ancillary develop-ments, including "a 150-200 bed hotel, with sea views and withconference, leisure and health resort facilities," along with "a sub-stantial area of high quality, public accessible amenity space" and"integrated urban spaces." For Youghal Town and Cork County Councillor Barbara Murraythe news brings several years of effort and consultation to a mile-stone. The councillor has been quietly if persistently working withCork County Council officials towards advancing the project andher initiative. The council adopted her initiative to offer prospec-tive investors the option to lease rather than buy the land and thisexercise in lateral thinking may now reap a revolutionary benefitfor her town. The councillor reveals that "there has already been strong interestfrom two quarters and who knows what other parties may nowalso decide to take an interest?" Submissions close on June 10th. Options and optimismInterestingly, it is understood that the two considerations to dateoffer contrasting options, with one party envisaging a marina con-structed outside the bank, while the second project suggests flood-ing the slob interior and building an enclosed marina. It is believedthat either structure could accommodate up to 200 berths.Unsurprisingly, the reaction in the town is one of contained hopeand seeping optimism. Chamber of Commerce director MichaelFarrell is quoted as saying that the site, close to Tesco and Lidl, isideally suited and located, with "plenty of room for a large carpark and ancillary services." He adds that the recessionary price ofland provides an added incentive for investors and envisages thata marina "would be worth millions of euro to Youghal." Youghal Mayor Mary Linehan-Foley says the development is"very, very welcome" and hopes that in due course unsustainableobjections will not be forthcoming. "As a council we are thrilledwith this and I would wish to reassure potential investors that ifthere is anything we can do to help them they need only ask," sheadds. There is a general, if reluctant acceptance in Youghal nowadaysthat some industrial benefactor arriving in town to solve its starkunemployment and retail problems is remote for the foreseeablefuture, if ever. By consequence, the need to develop long-termself-sustainment by nurturing the town's rich tourism and heritagepotential is acquiring a growing focus. The presence of a marinawould boost that aspiration a hundred fold. The light at the end ofthe tunnel would seem to be hope at the end of the harbour, itseems.

By Christy Parker An exotic species of hawk that visited in Youghal over the Easterweekend was the first of its kind ever spotted in Ireland. The his-toric sighting took place at Ballyvergan Marsh, adjacent toClaycastle beach, on Good Friday morning and brought an unex-pected influx of birdwatchers to the town. Owen Foley, a 29 year-old member of the Cork branch of BirdWatch Ireland was scanning the heritage-protected marsh at about11 am and could not believe his binoculars when a Pallid Harrierhawk hovered into view. "I'm pretty certain it was a female,"recalls the Dubliner now living in Cork city. "She mostly eludedme for a few hours thereafter, due to a heavy fog," he adds. "Thenthe sky cleared about three o'clock and she flew quite close to me." Topically, the Pallid Harrier is the bird world's Queen of Englandin that both are strangers to this country. "This was expected tohappen sometime," says Owen, adding further parallel, "as therehad been some sightings in Britain. It's an extremely historicevent!" Measuring about 45 cm from bill to tail, the creature'sidentity was assured by a distinguishable light collar and creamyundercarriage. It wasn't seen to carry a handbag however. The Pallid breeds mostly in Eastern Europe or Russia and wintersin Africa. It is likely that the Youghal visitor -believed to be ayoung hen in its first plumage- somehow came off course on itsreturn journey. Alternatively, like the eventually-spotted Callely, acute hawk native to Dublin, she may simply have been visiting asecond nest in Cork. Twitching In birdwatcher world, one who watches birds is 'bird-ing' whereas a birder who responds to a significant find is merely'twitching,' and is often considered something of a fair weathersupporter. When word travelled (through Twitter no doubt!) ofOwen's discovery, Youghal became temporary home to dozens ofbirders and twitchers. Over the weekend they flocked like, well, birds of feather fromsuch diverse habitats as Wexford, Kerry, Clare, Dublin, Sligo andWicklow. Amongst them was Molly, a three year-old black andwhite border collie from Clare, whose back was broken when runover by a car. She transported herself happily and energeticallyacross the dunes by means of a two wheeled trolley attached inplace of legs to her rear end. Some of the of the birders and twitchers nested overnight in localb & b's. Locals found them a very sociable breed, who happilycrowed about such experiences as having spent "four hours in aWexford bog in -14 degrees," on the off chance of seeing unusualfeathers fly. Sadly for most, the feathers had already flown in Youghal. Dawnobservers were treated to a Pallid fly-by. A second and glimpsewas afforded about 11 am. It was adjudged to be heading towardsKilkenny -home of the Cats. Oh dear…

drawing ever nearer when we will hold a veritable festival ofGAA over this years Bank Holiday weekend beginning with ourfirst ever hosting of the Deise Development Draw on Friday nightand culminating in a mouthwatering Senior Hurling Challengematch between Waterford and Cork on Bank Holiday Mondayevening at 6.30pm to mark the occasion of the official opening ofour new Clubhouse by Youghal man Christy Cooney, GAAPresident and Sean Kelly, former President, who of courselaunched our Redevelopment Fundraising efforts back in 2009.Our Intermediate Hurlers will provide championship action on theSaturday evening as they take on Tourin in the first round at theFraher Field which will hopefully draw a large crowd to theShandon ground. So back to the big game between Waterford andCork and with neither County involved in the League Final theday before, we would hope to see two strong pre-championshipteams being pitted against each other on the day so a lot to lookforward to. We will naturally be expecting a large crowd to attendthis match so I think it is important to stress that patrons should tryto arrive as early as possible at the venue to avoid traffic conges-tion and to please heed advice from all road and field stewards inand around the venue and Clashmore village itself as the safety ofpatrons is paramount at events such as this. So please watch thisspace next week for more details and a full schedule of events forthe weekend.Gaeltacht Scholarships It's that time of year again when we lookfor applications for the annual scholarships to the Gaeltacht of AnRinn from our young students, which is I think a great few weeksof learning and fun for all participants each summer. Report By Christy Parker In reference to the town clerk's report, Cllr Liam Burke asked howmuch of the rates shortfall was thought recoverable. Mr. Ryan saidit depended on whether companies were in liquidation, examiner-ship or whether individuals had absconded. "We'd hope to recov-er as much as possible but we are in uncharted waters," headvised. Cllr Sammy Revins asked if 'strike-offs' referred to idlefactories or businesses that were gone bust. "A mixture of both,"the town clerk replied. Congratulations:Mayor Mary Linehan Foley congratulated Cllr Michelle Hennessyon her co-option to Cork County Council in place of DeputySandra McLellan. The chamber applauded Cllr Hennessy's newstanding and reflected their satisfaction that the seat had remainedin Youghal. The mayor also congratulated jockey Davy Russell onhis two Cheltenham and one Aintree winner recently. A letterwould be dispatched.

Town Foreman's Report: Cllr Burke said weeds at the Ferry Slip needed clearing and lightno. 10 remains amiss at North Main Street. He said he had beeninformed that the word DeValera was misspelt on that street's carpark sign. Cllr Tommy O'Connell said many sandbags that had been issuedwith flood warnings some time ago remained on the street andwere a hazard, with one woman suffering a bad fall due to them.He said they were an eyesore on laneways as well as on the mainstreet and "a certain element" was kicking them around the place. He advocated having the bags collected and returned to the coun-ty council yard. Cllr Michael Beecher said that as residents were now going to bepaying to use the Fair Field car park (in lieu of the three-hourparking limit for non-resident permit holders), an effort should bemade to install "even one light" there. He understood it was to beupgraded in time but said that meantime "cars are being damagedthere because of lack of lighting." Cllr Barbara Murray noted that Dolphin Square car park was alsoto be upgraded but asked that the directional arrows on the tarmacat the entrance and exits re-painted. Covert Camera, Risky Railings and Beach BusinessCllr Eoin Coyne drew attention to illegal dumping on the top ofWindmill Hill. He felt it was occurring on Sunday mornings par-ticularly when the litter warden was off duty. The town clerk saidthe mobile and covert CCTV vehicle would be operating over thenext four months throughout the town, including over weekends.Cllr Beecher hoped that errant dog owners whose charges foul thestreets would also be targeted. Cllr Murray said CCTV was need-ed in Ashe Street as residents were incurring hefty expense in hav-ing to dispose of waste that was being illegal thrown onto theirproperties. Cllr Coyne also asked for an update on derelict sitenotices issued over the past year. The town clerk said that a formalreply to all items raised would be provided within two weeks. Cllr Hennessy said two missing flagstones on the quay behind thesnooker hall needed replacing, the ladder in the mall was rustedand a hazard to children and a lifebuoy was also needed at a cor-ner in that vicinity, where children regularly bathed. She con-curred with Cllr O'Connell's concerns over sandbags, especially atthe rear of the snooker hall, where tourist coaches converged. Thecouncillor also asked that sharped-edged iron bars, that served nopurpose in the vicinity of Meghan's Corner (Buttimers Quay)" asshe put it, be removed. Cllr Sammy Revins wanted the Front Strand railings leading to thebeach removed or replaced because they were dangerous. He alsoasked that efforts be made to install disabled toilet facilities on theFront Strand. The councillor was critical of the strand facilitiesgenerally, noting that a packed beach that weekend was unable topurchase either coffee or a sandwich. He urged that contact bemade with those interested in providing takeaway services by thebeach if the council was serious about properly promoting thetown asset. Mayor Mary Linehan-Foley accepted that funding was scarce butshe asked whether "a lick of paint" could be administered to theLighthouse Hill railings. Cork County Council Items: Town Engineer Paul Murray delivered his report arising from theprevious monthly meeting thus: Work had commenced on gullies on the Quarry Road and GolfLinks Road prior to resurfacing projects. Potholes were beingfilled on an ongoing basis. The pipes for the extension on the FrontStrand were on site and the appropriate tides were awaited to com-mence work. An additional bin had been cited at Claycastle and allbins would be re-instated for the June weekend, having beenremoved because they were being used for disposal of domesticwaste. Cllr Murray said the Mall Lane pothole was "absolutely diaboli-cal." The engineer said the roads contractor had only arrived intown the day previous and he expected he would attend to it by the

Youghal Town Council held on 12th April 2011

Rate Collection Report 2010Below is the Rate Collection Report for 2010 which sets out thecollection performance for the year. Revenue collection in the current economic climate is extremelychallenging and it is acknowledged that many businesses areencountering financial difficulties. Youghal Town Council must maximise its collection rate to allowfor the provision of services to the people of Youghal Town whileat the same time understanding the difficult financial situation inwhich some businesses find themselves. Rate income in 2010 accounted for 24.79% of the Council’sRevenue Income and is an important source of the Council’s ownfunding. Members would be aware that there has been a hugeincrease in companies entering liquidation/receivership/ examin-ership and this is obviously having an impact on collection. Thishas also resulted in the need to increase the Council’s provision fordoubtful debts, as was provided for in Budget 2011. The Budget provision for Rates in 2010 was €1,393,220 and thiscollection achieved was €1,021,556 leaving a shortfall of€371,664 for the year. Accordingly 73.32% of the budget requiredwas collected in 2010. This is considered a fair collection perform-ance give the difficult climate businesses are currently operatingin. It should be noted that Youghal Town Council are willing to dis-cuss payment plans with any Rate payer experiencing financialdifficulties. The Council will have to take legal action againstdefaulting Rate payers and this can be avoided if they engage withRate collection staff and agree payment plans.

arrived in town the day previous and he expected he would attendto it by the end of the week. Cllr Murray insisted it be addressedas "a matter of priority," given the high volume of traffic access-ing the lane. She said she had been "hearing about hot tar sinceJanuary" and would "really appreciate" a resolution. (The pot holehas since been filled). The councillor asked that sand be removedfrom the path to the beach at Claycastle. Also at Claycastle, a sub-siding, square section of road outside the pump station atClaycastle needed remedying, while two tyres on the town periph-ery by the planted boat needed removing. She also sought a com-mitment that the county council empty bins twice weekly duringthe summer season. Ban the Buses and Parking on PathsCllr Murray also said asked the practice of buses parking on theLighthouse Hill be halted. It was of constant concern to the TidyTowns committee and the vehicles gave a poor first reflection onthe town entrance. "You can't see the hanging baskets for thebuses," she elaborated. Furthermore, they compromised parkingspaces when there was a busy night in the nearby hotel. CllrMurray argued that while some liaison might be undertaken withthe bus owners, it was not the council's remit to be providing park-ing spaces for either the principal users Bus Eireann, or privateowners. She said Millennium Court or "our famous railway sta-tion" could accommodate them. "It was only ever intended forcoach parking," she concluded. The councillor said the TidyTowns was willing to contribute up to €2,000 towards the instal-lation of built-outs. Cllr Beecher said the pavement grid at the Bank of Ireland wasprotruding and was a hazard, despite being raised (no pun intend-ed) at March's meeting. He was also concerned that a dip in theroad outside Tesco's had been mentioned at previous meetings tono avail. "It couldn't be nearer to the council yard," he added. Cllr Hennessy asked for a progress report on Priority 1 disabilityaudit works. Mr Murray said there had been 23 Priority 1 roadcrossings, most of which had been done. The contractor was tofinalise some areas which were not straightforward and he antici-pated "another few weeks" before the projects were complete.Cllr Hennessy further complained that the tar had broken up at theentrance to Springfield Court and asked if double yellow linescould be painted on the Golf Links Road, where driers were park-ing on the footpath in the vicinity of two schools, necessitatingpedestrians to walk on the road. Cllr Burke noted that a railing on the front strand had rusted awaydangerously. He asked that gravel on the promenade and car parkbe cleared, before asking yet again that the 'concealed entrance'sign for Summerdale be provided. The councillor then listed "theusual list of broken footpaths, aka Tallow Street, South MainStreet and the junction of Strand Street/South Abbey", requiringremedy. Cllr Coyne asked that a widening pothole on Hayman's Hill berectified. He also complained that the public toilets at Claycastlehad not been opened the previous weekend, despite gloriousattracting large numbers to the area. The town clerk said theClaycastle toilets would open, as traditional, from the May bankholiday weekends. Funding and ResourcesThe town clerk then explained that all issues raised are prioritisedbut without central government making adequate funding andresources made available to local authorities, there would contin-ue to be problems. "Two years ago we had 20 staff available," heproceeded. "Now we have 12, which is less than we had in 1984,when the town was half the size that it is today." He realisedupgrading was vital in several areas and explained that the townmanager and he had "gone out on a limb" to secure €300,000 forthe main street resurfacing next September. Meanwhile the non-national roads grant funding from central government had beencut by over €100,000 each year for the past three years. "Peopleneed to understand that local government services are now at tip-ping point," he stressed "and services can't be delivered under cur-

rent budget levels." Insisting that the central issue was the futureof local government and whether it was going to be properlyresourced, he urged the members to convey their concerns to theirpolitical parties. Cllr Coyne replied that he was only asking for someone to "turn apadlock," such as had been done at the Front Strand. Mr. Ryan saidYoughal's was the only town council in Cork currently operatingon weekends. The toilets needed maintenance through April, heeventually Cllr Coyne, who accepted the point. Cllr Murray acknowledged the town clerk's efforts to meetrequirements and observed that as a tourist town, Youghal neededgreater input and flexibility from Cork County Council in meetingrequirements. "Yet if anyone decides to do something voluntarywe have World War Three over doing someone's job," she com-plained. Mr. Ryan added that health and safety legislation was alsoa negative factor where voluntary participation was involved."There has to be a change of mind as to how things are done, at anational level," he urged. Cllr Revins said the promenade needed clearing of gravel, a wallat the back of the GAA pitch in Copperally was in danger of col-lapse and asked if anything was going into a "crater" atSummerdale Lawn "besides cars!" Derelict Library SiteMayor Linehan-Foley asked that a full report be sought on thestate and standing of the Noth Main Street site (formerly Collins'sbakery) purchased by Cork County Council for a library someyears ago. She said it was overgrown with weeds and people weredumping rubbish and it was becoming rat-infested. "Any otherowner would be ordered to tidy it," she observed. The mayor alsoquestioned the logic in the county council renting a "top dollar"location in the town while a property lay idle and neglected on thesame street. "Surely the money saved on rent would pay off a bankloan to restore the purchased property," she wondered. Mr .Murrayagreed to seek information from the county council's library sec-tion. Cllr Burke then said it needed establishing where Youghalnow stood in terms of priority on the funding list for libraries, hav-ing been told several years ago it was at the top. "The LibraryCouncil of Ireland is not funding anything at present," informedCllr Murray, "and Cork County Council is renting libraries all overthe place from its revenue budget." She added that there were"huge archaeological issues" regarding their Youghal property andsuggested it might be better were it sold and a more suitable prop-erty acquired. 2011 Purchase Scheme for Long-standing Tenants: The town clerk said the new Purchase Scheme for Long-standingTenants: The town clerk said the new scheme (which carries a pur-chase price of minus a tenancy deduction of up to 45% i.e. 3% perannum for up to 15 years) was specifically designed for calendaryear 2011 and any purchases made during the year must be com-pleted by December 31st 2012. It was the adopted by the council. Motion that the road at Cnoc Aobhinn, length 209 linear metres,be declared a public road due consideration having been given tothe financial implications of same: The motion was adopted.Heritage Applications 2011: Mr Ryan said he had made three applications pertaining to: i) IrishWalled Towns Day, for which €8,000 had been received from anapplication for €15,000; ii) Town Walls projects, for which€153,000 was sought, with provision for a scaled down projectsubject to funding availability. He was happy that the council hadreceived €60,000, which was 10% of the entire national budget;iii) an application for €73,000 towards St. Mary's Church was cur-rently being considered. In response to Cllr Murray, the town clerksaid the council's contribution to grants was just an additional10%, for which allowance was made in the annual budget. "Peopleneed to know that progress is slow because these applications arebasically our only means of raising funds," reflected Cllr Murray.

By Christy Parker The co-option of Eoin Flanagan in replacement of Deputy SandraMcLellan on Youghal Town Council sees the first disabled coun-cillor in living memory, if ever, elected to the chamber. The sur-prise selection thus not merely reflects a considerable personalachievement by the new councillor-in-waiting but also brings abenign reflection on all who harbour disability in the community.Following his selection at a party convention in the Mall ArtsCentre on April 11th, Eoin's co-option is expected to be ratified bythe party prior to next month's town council meeting. The 27 year-old politician, who has had spins bifida since birth, joined Sinn Fein several a months ago. An intelligent and keen fol-lower of politics, he is a staunch admirer of executed Irish patriot, socialist and co-founder of the Labour Party, James Connolly. Hisallegiance to Sinn Fein has been nurtured through party colleagueand fellow councillor Michelle Hennessy, whose active involve-ment with the local disability group is regularly manifested in thecouncil chamber. Convivial and relaxed, Eoin says he is "absolutely thrilled" at theprospect of making his political debut and indicates that his focuswill extend beyond disability issues into the wider landscape."Whatever I can do, in whatever area, to help a town I dearly love,I will do," he pledges. The youngest in a family of two boys, the new councillor is aSpurs and Celtic supporter and carries a keen interest in sport gen-erally. He has represented Ireland at Junior level in discus, javelinand shot putt in the arena of disability sport. He will also travel asa navigator with Team Youghal on its 3,000 mile fundraising cycleacross America for the Emer Casey Foundation, in June. Eoinextends his gratitude to his family, friends and party for their"strong support" in his ongoing political journey. Michelle Hennessy co-opted to County CouncilThe convention's principal purpose was to confirm TownCouncillor Michelle Hennessy's succession to Deputy McLellan'sseat on Cork County Council. The new county councillor is a sis-ter-in-law of the Sinn Fein minister. The nomination was originally contested by Cllr Hennessy, CobhCllr Kieran McCarthy and Midleton Cllr Pat Buckley. However, the party's selection committee voiced preference forCllr Hennessy. With all three having agreed to side with the com-mittee's nomination, Cllrs McCarthy and Buckley withdrew theircandidacy. Cllr Hennessy's was proposed and seconded by herrivals in a show of unified commitment to a confident, burgeoningparty that now has offices in Youghal, Midleon and Cobh. A "home maker" and mother of four children aged two to 16, CllrHennessy was first co-opted onto Youghal Town Council in 2007following the resignation of Cllr. Martin Hallinan. She was re-elected in 2010 election. She is a strong advocate of rights for thedisabled and is a member of the Youghal Disability AwarenessGroup and the Cope Foundation.

The Ford Focus' claim to be Ireland's most successful ever cargained extra currency today when sales surpassed the 100,000mark. The milestone has been achieved in less than 13 years, mak-ing the Focus the fastest selling car in Irish motoring history

The Peugeot 207 has been named as the most reliable car made bya European company. The news came from Warranty Direct, based on data for cars aged three and seven years old.

The healthy level of 2011 car sales continued in Ireland duringMarch with Ford taking the top spot in the sales charts. ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS FROMWATERFORD HAVE BIG PLANS

FOR YOUGHAL

CONCERN AS DOGS INJURED BY DIS-CARDED FISHING HOOKS.

This year, the architecture students from the Waterford Institute ofTechnology have adopted Youghal as the location for their mostrecent - and by far their most ambitious - projects to date.'We can't understand the unfair treatment Youghal has received inthe press lately,' says third year student Jonny Murphy, who'sdesign for a workshop for building traditional boats features astunning iconic tower proposal for Nelson Quay. YOUGHAL BOWLING CLUB

By Christy Parker Youghal dog owners are urgedto be alert as it emerges that anaverage of one dog per monthis incurring injury from dis-carded fish hooks while exer-cising in scenic areas.Testimony from local vets indi-cate that each treats an averageof three or four dogs a year forinjuries sustained from discard-ed fishing tackle. Owners haveincurred expensive veterinarysurgery in incidents where hooks have become embedded in adog's mouth or, on at least one occasion, when an animal has swal-lowed a hook. Youghal Town and Cork County Councillor Barbara Murray wantsthe county authority to erect signs advising anglers in Youghal notto leave fishing tackle or hooks behind them. Kim Carey's three year-old Labrador, Macy, has had two unfortu-nate encounters with discarded hooks at the Slob bank, a mile-long, scenic walking area alongside the Blackwater. "LastDecember my fiancé Alan noticed Macy was distressed," recallsKim. "She had a piece of fishing line protruding from her mouthand a vet's x-ray showed she had swallowed a hook. It required anoperation to remove it. More recently she got a hook stuck on herpaw. I've met others whose dogs have had similar injuries and I'veeven got tangled in fishing line myself." Local man Terry Hurton's black Labrador Allie had to have a hookremoved from her tongue after a walk on the Slob bank. "It costme €80," says Terry wistfully. Youghal vet Tom Kenneally says he treats "for or five dogs" a yearfor such hook-related injuries. "It happens in the Slob and on thebeaches," he says. Other vets in the area report a similar average, indicating about one dog a month falls victim. Many anglers fish in the area and angling club competitions arefrequently held on the Slob bank. The Munster Council of the IrishFederation of Sea Anglers has been informed of the issue but saythey cannot comment at present. Meanwhile Cllr Murray, herself a dog owner says she has broughtthe matter to the attention of county hall and will further pursuethe issue. "I don't think any angler is deliberately negligent but sig-nage might urge them to double check they haven't left anythingbehind," she reasons. "And it might also remind dog owners to bealert to the danger."

Youghal Ladies Footballers Show Tremendous Heart

The Youghal Ladies Footballers were in action last weekend atMagners Hill where the opposition were Ballyphehane fromCork City. The City South Siders were the better side, but that is what is tobe expected considering that the Youghal Ladies Footballers areonly in their first year and already they are showing great prom-ise.The selectors must be praised for the hard work and the long hoursthat they are putting into the teams and fair play to all the support-ers who cheered on the girls last Sunday evening.Youghal had three great scores on the night, the Captain DeidreCronin raising two white flags from play and a great score fromAoife O'Siochru which was nearly a goal.Sinead Swayne came close on a couple of occasions and thedefending by Faye O'Brien, Jenna White and in particular JennyBarry was excellent. All the players must be congratulated for their efforts on the nightand the performance of Leah Broderick was outstanding. All in all there is fantastic potential talent within the ranks of theYoughal Ladies Footballers and a great determination and it takesa few years for a team to establish themselves and with the peoplein place and the honesty and the determination of the Ladies play-ing it will be no time at all when the Youghal Girls will be mak-ing their mark in their Division.Youghal Ladies Football Club would like to thank to AlisonO'Connor of Youghal Pharmacy who kindly donated two completeFirst Aid Bags to our Junior & Juvenile teams for the coming sea-son. This gesture is very much appreciated by the Club and helps usgreatly as an essential piece of kit has now been secured. Youghal Rugby ClubWin U17 Cup Final V Kinsale

On Sunday last, Youghal travelled to Old Christians Ground inCork to take on Kinsale in the U17 Cup Final. Youghal Startedvery well but some nerves and dropped passes cost us probably acouple of trys. Kinsale who only got into our 22 a few times in thefirst half were awarded a very well worked try from the lineout.Ciaran O'Brien kicked a penalty to leave the half time score 5-3 toKinsaleYoughal brought on Lee McCarthy and Aaron Hogan at half time. The pressure was on Kinsale straight away which resulted in TomO'Neill blocking down the Kinsale out half to score a great try.Ciaran O'Brien converted to put us 13-5 ahead.Again Kinsale came back and scored a good forward try whichwas converted to leave the game in the balance at 13-12. Someexcellent driving by Youghal's Michael O'Neill, Conor Farrell andDenis Bottrell lead to a penalty which Ciaran O'Brien converted toput us 4 points ahead with 10 minutes remaining..Youghal had some excellent runs by Diarmuid O'Flaherty, DeanMalone and Jordan Power but just couldn't seem to finish themoff. Then with 5 minutes remaining a super run by Aaron Hoganwho offloaded to Lee McCarthy put Cillian Ansbro away to scoreunder the posts. Ciaran O'Brien again converted to leave the finalscore 21-12 in favour of Youghal. This was a great end to the season for this small panel of players.Well done to all concerned and coaches Sean O'Neill and PatKiely.Team: Michael O'Neill, Aidan McCarthy, James Glesson, DenisBottrell, Conor Farrell, Cillian Kenneally, Elton Ruxton (capt),Tom O'Neill, Eoghan Maloney, Ciaran O'Brien, DiarmuidO'Flaherty, Dean Malone, Adam Ahern, Jordan Power and CillianAnsbro.Subs: Lee McCarthy, Aaron Hogan, Conor Finn, Leroy Davis andGarrett O'Regan

Over 20,000 of thesebrochures were distributed both locally and nationwide to touristoffices, accommodation and activity providers, Cork InternationalAirport, Swansea to Cork ferry, and at tourism trade shows. Localtourism dependant businesses were offered an opportunity toadvertise on the map. A revised version of the brochure will be pro-duced again for 2011 and any members who wish to have theirbusiness advertised should contact the office 024-92447 Marina: After many years of campaigning, Youghal Chamber ofTourism & Development are delighted with the news that CorkCounty Council have advertised for a Marina at their lands at theMudlands in Youghal The site itself is low-lying marshland, protected from the sea by anembankment. It is a natural entrance point to the historic town cen-tre and can be one of the catalysts for the much needed regenera-tion of the riverfront area.In 1999, Youghal Chamber set up a task force to promote the devel-opment of a marina in our historic town. A feasibility report wascommissioned and published in 2000. This report highlighted theenormous economic and social benefits a marina would have on theregion. A survey of businesses in Dun Laoghaire, Kilmore Quay andMalahide, carried out under an Irish Sea Marine Sector Marketing& Business Development Programme funded under the Interreg111A project 2005-2007, found that marinas in Dún Laoghaire andMalahide had a positive impact on 34 per cent of respondents. AtKilmore Quay, some 50 per cent of businesses surveyed believedthat their local marina contributed to their success. The surveyshowed that the average spend per berth on maintenance, chan-dlery, fuel, personal protective equipment (PPE), clothing, insur-ance, marina berthing fees and training, ranged between €7,787 and€11,011 per berth, and that the average spend per visitor rangedbetween €105 and €142 on groceries, gifts, chandlery entertain-ment and eating out, but not expenditure on other services such asrepairs etcOur tourism partner, Failte Ireland South Western Region, havehighlighted the need for a commercial berthing facility in or aroundthe town of Youghal. The nearest facilities on the east coast areKilmore Quay and The Three Sisters, both of which are located onthe Wexford Coast. The Port of Youghal is traditionally regarded asthe nearest port to Landsend in Cornwall. It is therefore the nearestport to the South and East Coast of England, our largest tourismmarket. Employment: Estimated that every job in the core coastal marinasector supports a further 12 jobs in the local economy, through ten-ant businesses, suppliers and as a result of visitor and employeeexpenditures in the wider economy. This supports a total of 22,000jobs within coastal economiesFestivals:Visitors for Maritime Themed Festivals spend on average€30 per personYoughal Town: Marinas have the potential to play a significantrole in the wider economy, facilitating regeneration and impactingupon residential and commercial property valuesMeeting with Deputy David Stanton TD: Directors from YoughalChamber of Tourism & Development recently had a very construc-tive meeting with Deputy David Stanton TD. The following issueswere discussed. Job Creation and industrial services, Derelict properties, Generalappearance of the town, The future of the railway station, Youghalbeach, Development of the river Blackwater and the GeneralPromotion of the town. We would like to thank Mr Stanton for giv-ing us the opportunity to meet with himThe Tourist office is fully stocked with gifts and souvenirs and iscurrently opened from Monday to Friday from 10am to 3pm andwill be opened on Saturday & Sunday for the bank holiday week-ends.

YOUGHAL CHAMBER OF TOURISM & DEVELOPMENT NEWS

Page 28: YOUGHAL A4 APR 28

By Christy Parker Dozens of tour buses arriving in Youghal per week on the Rosslare toCork/Killarney route make reference to Moby Dick as the only point ofinterest in Youghal, the most recent meeting of the Youghal ConcernedCitizens group was told. Mr. Norman MacDonald, who is conductingresearch on the issue, also revealed that tens of tour operators on the sameroute bypass the town entirely throughout the summer. Other issues to be aired at the meeting include a commitment to enterYoughal in a TG4 event for a €40,000 marketing award and a determina-tion to bring cohesion to promotional events amongst the town's diverseorganisations. The meeting, at the Red Store on Tuesday April 19thattracted a 20 plus attendance. With organisation and procedure becom-ing more fine-tuned by the meeting, the gathering processed the pre-setagenda with increased efficiency and purpose. Apologies were conveyedon behalf of PRO Noreen Hurley who was unable to attend due to minorpersonal circumstances. The order of business ran as follows: Opening address by Chairman Jimmy Flanagan: Mr. Flanagan askedcommittee member Micheal De Buitleir for an update on a proposedparking a questionnaire to be conducted through Pobalscoil na Trionoidetransition year. Mr De Buitleir said the school's preference was to under-take the project in September. The Comhaltas Craobh Eochail chairmanalso informed that the group had missed the most recent "window oppor-tunity" to contribute to the County Development Plan but that they wouldbe consulted when the next seeking public submissions process arose.Planning and signage issues would feature on such agenda, he added. Election of Treasurer: Mr Flanagan said that the group would incur gen-eral running costs and responsibility for handling such finances was need-ed. It was agreed that donations (as against subscriptions) would besought alongside a €2 contribution per member per meeting. The post oftreasurer will be filled temporarily by group secretary Adrian Hyde. Itwas noted that one well-wisher had contributed €100 at the previousmeeting. Formation of a working group to examine issues relating to seasidedevelopment in Youghal and to formulate proposals for same: MrFlanagan successfully sought volunteers to investigate what needs atten-tion in this area, whether it involve beach cleaning or more advancedprojects. A Mr. Eoin Budds, from the floor, advocated efforts to developthe beach and river facilities as per other resorts, suggesting kayaking andfestival-orientated beach activities as examples by which to maximise andmarket the natural beach resort. He undertook to compile a report for thenext meeting. Formation of a working group to formulate proposals for a centralmessage or hook upon which the town can market itself: The chairman recalled marketing manager Tim Magee's impressiveaddress at the previous meeting in which he stressed that while industrywas welcome, Youghal's focus should be on sustainable development ofits natural amenities and local enterprises. It was conveyed from the atten-dance that Mr. Magee, despite his frequent business sojourns abroad, remains very willing to contribute to the group in whatever capacity isviable for him to do so. Marketing catastrophe: Norman MacDonald diverted the discussion alittle when he revealed that up to 35 bus tour companies operate on theRosslare to Cork/Killarney throughout the summer and beyond. In anexample of marketing deficiency, one of these, Seaways, conducts 47seven-day and 25 ten-day tours through Youghal, amounting to one perweek of each through Youghal. However the only point of interest theyreferred to in Youghal was Moby Dick, explained Mr. MacDonald. Hefurther revealed that many of the tour companies bypass the town entire-ly. He is now compiling details of as many companies as possible to quan-tify the dearth and potential of marketing within this sector. Notwithstanding the good service it provided, through the pub of thesame name, Mr. MacDonald felt strongly that Youghal had a lot more tooffer besides the legacy of a dead whale to entice bus passengers to alightand to amble. There were many "treasures," such as St. Mary's Church, with walls dating from 600 AD, the River Blackwater and even murder-ous, marauding Cromwell if need be! He wondered of Comhaltas per-formers could greet arrivals, or if they might be induced to linger by oldervolunteers greeting them on arrival with pamphlets depicting Youghal'smany attractions. The meeting also heard that only one of several cafés in the area showed

interest in opening earlier in the morning to tempt such travellers. "We'renot being rude but we're not being welcoming either," surmised MrMacDonald ruefully, adding. "You could show someone Youghal for awhole day and they'd still not see half of it!" Mr. MacDonald then revealed that plans to acquire a unique model rail-way attraction from Dublin had been derailed as the owners had apparent-ly opted to send it to a museum in Dun Laoghaire instead. A watchful eyewould be maintained lest it became available nonetheless. TG4: Micheal de Buitleir brought news that TG4 are launching a com-petitive 'G-day' event in which non-Gaeltacht towns will compete againsteach other to stage the best 24 hour Irish language and heritage festival. The contest carries a first prize of €40,000 towards marketing their area."Even without winning, the competition gets you a lot of valuable televi-sion coverage," he argued. It was agreed that Youghal would participate. Cohesion, co-operation, clearing and Gavin Mr De Buitleir proceeded that Youghal clubs and organisation had tradi-tionally marketed themselves individually, whereas a joint and cohesivestrategy would likely serve the town better. He also referred to 'PaintingYour Grey Area,' a new promotion being run by Dulux in which the com-pany will provide free paint for use on derelict public buildings. Committee member Lil Danne remarked that several areas surroundingthe beach and quays needed sprucing up and cleaning. She suggested thatpointers might be garnered from viewing a Dirty Old Towns, a current tel-evision series in which gardener Diarmuid Gavin was applying his craftto improving Charleville. "He asked that they fundraise €30,000 towardsthe project and the entire town rallied behind it," she observed. Mr, De Buitleir reported that Comhalts Ceoltori Eireann had cleaned fromthe water tower to Magner's Hill a week previous and said the town coun-cil were receptive to such voluntary 'public realm' initiatives. He urgedthat other groups consider similar projects. There subsequently emergedsome discussion on the prevalence of unsightly sandbags in the town andit was agreed to remove them in a week's time if they remained visible. An unexpected revelation arose from Mr Flanagan when he produced acopy of the previous Saturday's Irish Daily Mirror. It carried a feature onYoughal but, in stark contrast to the earlier Irish Times equivalent, itdepicted a town laden with attractions and natural beauty. "It's absolutelyfantastic," remarked the chairman. Formation of a working to investigate the feasibility of implementinga strategy across all groups and organisations in regard to co-ordi-nating activities and events: It was agreed that individual organisations were doing well in their effortsto promote the town from individual perspectives but that too often effortsclashed with those of other organisations, to the detriment of all partiesand of the town. It was recognised that the absence of representativesfrom local organisations at Youghal Concerned Citizens meetings did notfacilitate improvement in this sphere. The meeting agreed to contact asmany organisations and clubs as possible with a view to acquiring theirviews on the issue. A suggestion was made also that efforts be made topublish a calendar of events in the local media some weeks in advance tohelp avoid a clash between meetings, events, etc. Youghal Lace: A spokeswoman representative Youghal Lace revealedthat the group is planning to re-convene in the coming weeks. She saidmuch plans for the future included tutoring interested parties in the art ofproducing the unique lacework. As regards exhibiting past creations, she was not in a position as yet todeclare or elaborate on that. As the meeting neared conclusion, there wasconsensus to ask the town council in writing for an update on the pro-posed restoration project for the Clock Gate, which was predicted to com-mence this month. The final item concerned the old railway station. Two people in atten-dance expressed a willingness voluntarily to clean up the site. They weretold that the town council has contacted the site owners, Iarnrod Eireannand were awaiting a response on a request to render it less unsavourylooking. Meanwhile the volunteers were advised to contact the companywith any proposals. Reports and progress on all the above issues will be processed at the nextmeeting of the Youghal Concerned Citizens'ss next meeting on TuesdayMay 10th at 7 pm in the Red Store.
