Fair test Fun: Grass Head vs Cress HeadThis is a great activity to do at home; you can watch as the ‘hair’ grows longer.
You will need: grass/cress seeds, 2 tights, scissors, soil/cotton balls, wool or string/elastic bands, googly eyes, paper cup (optional - yoghurt pots, egg shells,)
Watch this video to see how:
https://youtu.be/4kmKPyv_VUc and https://youtu.be/6Stm5ZhhjaU
Fair test: Keep everything the same and only change the seeds. How else could you do a fair test? What will you keep the same and what will you change?
Qs: Which head grows fastest? Which has the longest hair?
Eco Self Watering PlanterKeep your growing seeds and plants happy for longer with this
neat idea :)
You will need: An empty 2L water/drink bottle, tool to make a hole, sponge/some string (twist/plait to make a three stranded string as shown), seeds/plant (quick growing salad seeds), scissors, an adult to help.
Watch the video here. Choose 1 of the 3 planters to make.
Follow the instructions to pot up your plant or sow your seeds. Stand back and watch them grow.
Keep a diary and don’t forget to share pics of planters - how long does it take to germinate, get to 6 inches, harvest????
Watch this fun video of Peep and the sunflower seed. (video not suitable for KS2)
You will need: A pot (can recycle milk cartons/water bottles), soil, paints/old nail varnish, sunflower seed, diary/old notebook, ruler
Try decorating a pot; then sow your sunflower seed.
Remember!!! Plants need light, water and sun so choose a nice sunny windowsill.
Why not?? - keep a plant diary. How long does it take to germinate? Measure the height every week; by how much has it grown since you last measured it? Make a drawing to record the changes.
Find out more about sunflowers here.
Grow a Sunflower
Parts of a PlantDownload or draw the image and label the parts of a plant.
Make and label a model of a flowering plant or fruit tree.
Collect and label the parts of a weed.
Paint with Chlorophyll
Copy this outline of a tree onto A4 paper. Collect some leaves from your environment. You could try collecting some that are different colours.
Use a spoon or coin to press the chlorophyll from your leaves onto your drawing. What happens? Repeat until your tree is completely covered with leaves.
Fair test Fun 2: Up in the Air!
Making paper airplanes is fun but did you know that you could use them to do a ‘Fair test’ experiment???
You will need: A4 sheet, A4 card. Pens/Colouring pencils to decorate (optional), something to measure - ruler/string.
Make your 1st plane using plain A4 sheet, then make 2nd plane using A4 card. Watch this video to find out how
Now for the fun bit...find a spot to stand on then throw your 1st plane. Stand on the same spot and throw your 2nd plane.
Measure and compare the distances. Which one went the farthest???
