Pastor’s Corner—Letter from Fr. Paul O’Donnell

Dear Families and Friends of St. Margaret Mary, We are learning many things during this time of the coronavirus—among other things, that statistics do not speak of the human suffering behind the numbers, that the so-called experts may know less than we do, and perhaps most importantly, that perfect happiness cannot be attained on this earth. Moreover, with the current economic uncertainty, we Christians surely know that earthly goods, such as riches, honor, pleasure—even social stability—cannot by themselves make us happy, for they cannot satisfy our soul. The “goods” of this life, if focused on exclusively can often make life bitter, and invariably forsake us in death. As Jesus said, “There is only One who is good…(and) There is only one thing necessary”— God. All other things pass away but God remains. We perceive, especially during these months of pandemic, that earthly goods deceive us and pleasures are ephemeral. All the social unrest tells us that human beings can no more be happy without God than a fish can live out of the water. To paraphrase St. Augustine: Our hearts are restless until they rest in God. In fact, the earth and earthly goods are given to us only so that through them we may attain eternal happiness. Every creature on earth is intended as a step to bring us nearer to God. All things in the world are intended to help us get to heaven. Not to use earthly things for this end, therefore, is to lose sight of eternal happiness.

During these dark and difficult days, we Chris-tians need to remember that only the Gospel of Christ is capable of giving us a partial happiness on earth, for he who follows the teaching of Christ is certain to have peace in his soul. The reason for this is, that earthly sufferings cannot make us unhappy if we are following Christ. Jesus’ disciples will have to endure persecution; but these persecutions can do us no lasting harm. St. Paul tells us: “All who will live godly in Christ Jesus, shall suffer persecution” (2 Tim 3: 12). The whole life of the Christian is a carrying of the Cross with Christ and a suffering of persecution. Jesus Himself says: “The servant is not above his master” (Mt 10: 24). That is why the world

today—the radical ideologies and their media mouthpieces—regard Christians as foolish, erratic people, condemning us and hating us, seeking to destroy our sacred images. To be loved and praised by the world is to be the enemy of Christ. The principles of the world are in contra-diction with those of Christ. Yet Jesus tells us: “Every one that hears My words and puts them into practice, is like the wise man who built his house upon rock” (Mt 7: 24). He who trusts in God builds on solid ground. All the persecuted saints of Christ believed, “If God is with us, who can be against us?” (Rm 8:28).

We clearly see that, during this time of COVID-19, the world cannot escape sickness and suffer-ing. But happily, as Pope Francis said, the Church is a big field hospital for all the sick and suffering. Society, in every generation, is sure to be full of all kinds of miseries, but again, happily, we disci-ples of Jesus Christ do not place our hopes on perfect happiness in this “valley of tears” but on eternal happiness in heaven. May our blessed Mother Mary always intercede for us!

Mensaje del Padre Paul O’Donnell Queridos amigos de Santa Margarita María Estamos aprendiendo muchas cosas durante este tiem-po del coronavirus— entre otras cosas, que las estadís-ticas no hablan del sufrimiento humano detrás de los números, que los llamados expertos pueden saber menos que nosotros, y quizás lo más importante, que la felicidad perfecta no se puede alcanzar en esta tie-rra. Además, con la actual incertidumbre económica, los cristianos seguramente sabemos que los bienes errenales, como la riqueza, el honor y el placer—incluso la estabilidad social— no pueden por sí mismos hacernos felices, ya que no pueden satisfacer nuestra alma. Los "bienes" de esta vida, si se centran exclusivamente en ellos, a menudo pueden hacer que la vida sea amarga e invariablemente nos abandonen en la muerte. Como dijo Jesús: "Solo hay Uno que es bueno... (Y) Solo hay una cosa necesaria"— Dios. Todas las demás cosas pasan pero Dios permanece. Percibimos, especialmente durante estos meses de pandemia, que los bienes terrenales nos engañan y los placeres son efímeros. Todos los disturbios sociales nos dicen que los seres humanos no pueden ser más felices sin Dios de lo que un pez puede vivir fuera del agua. Parafraseando a San Agustín: Nuestros corazo-nes están inquietos hasta que descansen en Dios. De hecho, la tierra y los bienes terrenales nos son dados solo para que a través de ellos podamos alcanzar la felicidad eterna. Cada criatura en la tierra pretende ser un paso para acercarnos a Dios. Todas las cosas en el mundo están destinadas a ayudarnos a llegar al cielo. No usar cosas terrenales para este fin, por lo tanto, es perder de vista la felicidad. Durante estos días oscuros y difíciles, los cristianos debemos recordar que solo el Evangelio de Cristo es capaz de darnos una felicidad parcial en la tierra, porque el que sigue las enseñanzas de Cristo segura-mente tendrá paz en su alma. La razón de esto es que los sufrimientos terrenales no pueden hacernos infeli-ces si estamos siguiendo a Cristo. Los discípulos de Jesús tendrán que soportar la persecución; pero estas persecuciones no nos pueden hacer ningún daño duradero. San Pablo nos dice: "Todos los que vivan piadosamente en Cristo Jesús sufrirán persecu-ción" (2 Tim. 3: 12). Toda la vida del cristiano es car-gar la cruz con Cristo y sufrir persecución. Jesús mis-mo dice: "El siervo no está por encima de su se-ñor" (Mt 10, 24). Es por eso que el mundo de hoy— las ideologías radicales y sus portavoces mediáticos— consideran a los cristianos como personas tontas y erráticas, que nos condenan y odian, buscando destruir nuestras imágenes sagradas. Ser amado y alabado por el mundo

es ser enemigo de Cristo. Los principios del mundo están en contradicción con los de Cristo. Sin embargo, Jesús nos dice: "Todo aquel que escucha Mis palabras y las pone en práctica, es como el hom-bre sabio que construyó su casa sobre la roca" (Mt 7, 24). El que confía en Dios construye sobre tierra fir-me. Todos los santos perseguidos de Cristo creyeron: "Si Dios está con nosotros, ¿quién puede estar en contra de nosotros?" (Rm 8:28). Vemos claramente que, durante este tiempo de COVID-19, el mundo no puede escapar de la enfermedad y el sufrimiento. Pero felizmente, como dijo el Papa Francisco, la Iglesia es un gran hospital de campaña para todos los enfermos y sufrientes. La sociedad, en cada generación, segura-mente estará llena de todo tipo de miserias, pero nuevamente, felizmente, nosotros los discípulos de Jesucristo no ponemos nuestras esperanzas en la felicidad perfecta en este "valle de lágrimas" sino en la felicidad eterna en el cielo. ¡Que nuestra bendita Madre María siempre interceda por nosotros! “Oh María, tu resplandeces siempre en nuestro camino como signo de salvación y de esperanza.

Nosotros nos confiamos a, Salud de los enfer-mos, que bajo la Cruz estuviste asociada al dolor de Jesús, manteniendo firme tu fe. Tu, Salvación del pueblo romano, sabes de que tenemos necesidad y estamos seguros que proveerás, para que, como en Cana de Galilea, pueda volver la alegría y la fiesta después de este momento de prueba. Ayúdanos, Madre del Divino Amor, a confor-marnos a la voluntad del Padre y a hacer lo que nos dirá Jesús, quien ha tomado sobre si nuestros sufrimientos y ha cargado nuestros Dolores para conducirnos, a través de la cruz, a la alegría de la resurrección. ¿Hay alguien aquí entre ustedes que no puede seguir mis palabras y concentrarse para orar y escuchar la Pa-labra de Dios, porque siente el malestar del hambre en su estomago? Espero que no, pero si hubiera alguien en tal necesidad, desearía ayudarlo hoy mismo. De eso pa-rece hablarnos el mensaje de este domingo, prometien-do abundante comida en Isaías, una multiplicación de panes en el evangelio y la convicción de que ni el ham-bre logrará separarnos de nuestro amigo Jesús. La po-breza es tema candente hoy. Y lo es porque de pobreza y hambre mueren diariamente muchos hermanos nues-tros. Y lo es todavía más si tenemos en cuenta que en países evolucionados se malgasta de todo: comida, ves-tidos, energía. Esto plantea de momento un problema de injusticia y un remordimiento de conciencia a nivel co-lectivo. Estamos tan acostumbrados a confesar pecados aprendidos de memoria que muy pocas veces nos acusa-mos de malgastar bienes que pertenecen a otros seres que conviven en nuestro planeta. Desde el principio de la humanidad hubo pobreza, ham-bre y miseria. De una manera u otra hemos relacionado con el desorden entrado en el mundo por el pecado. Hay pobreza debido a la pereza y abandono, pobreza debido a la explotación que ejercen los poderosos movidos por el egoísmo. Esto acaece hoy y lo testimoniaron ya los profetas del Antiguo Testamento, Amós y Oseas. Pero todavía hay más, parece que entra dentro de la provi-dencia divina el que la pobreza perdure mientras haya vida en este mundo. Así lo dejó entrever Jesús en el evangelio, cuando dijo: “Pobres tendrán con ustedes”. El evangelio cuenta el milagro más importante de Jesús, narrado seis veces en el Nuevo Testamento. La iglesia veía en él un anticipo de la eucaristía. La narración re-calca la compasión de Jesús, 1) sanando a los enfermos, y 2) alimentando a los hambrientos. Es fácil no tener compasión; es fácil decir que si a alguien le falta algo es “por su culpa,” porque no trabajó, o porque no fue pro-

vidente. Jesús delega su compasión a los discípulos: “Denles ustedes de comer.” Los discípulos tiene que ser líderes y tomar la iniciativa en línea con el pensamiento de Jesús; ellos hablan de comprar mientras Jesús les hablaba de “dar” y regalar los panes. La grandeza del milagro y de las sobras muestra la pro-digalidad de Dios: sobran doce canastos de pan, sufi-cientes para alimentar a las doce tribus del Nuevo Israel que se forma con gentes provenientes de todo el mundo. El milagro apunta a un pan más profundo y duradero, contra un hambre permanente. “el pan de cada día,” la eucaristía que vamos a compartir. Hoy es buen día para pensar y predicar sobre el hambre que aflige a gran par-te de la humanidad. Hay posibilidad de quitarla, pero en vez de pan, a los pueblos hambrientos les enviamos ar-mas y píldoras anticonceptivas, fusiles y tanques, que eliminen no el hambre sino a los hambrientos. El ejem-plo de Jesús nos desafía: vio la necesidad y pasó a la acción. Nosotros debemos trabajar contra toda hambre para que llegue la Palabra de Dios a los que no la cono-cen y para que llegue el pan a los que no lo tienen. En el banquete escatológico sapiencial, Dios da el pan gratis; no hay que ganarlo sino sólo responder a la invi-tación. Invita a todos los que se sienten pobres o necesi-tados de Dios, a los anawim (Hombre pobre, cuya úni-ca riqueza es tener a Dios, cree radicalmente en El y teniéndolo en su ser, le basta para sobrevivir).

Reflexión

Un banquete consolida las relaciones humanas y divi-nas produciendo amistad y llevando a la reprocidad; la única condición, repetida tres veces, es responder: “Escuchen atentos,” “presten atención,” “escúchenme.” La invitación “vengan y coman” se repite cuatro veces, para que vengan a Dios y no vayan a otros.
