CORCORAN’S CORNER “To Teach Who Christ is Campaign” … We continue to receive pledges to our “To Teach Who Christ Is” Capital Campaign. As of June 1, we have raised $855,000, of our parish $1,545,000 total goal. We have 343 families, or over 15% of our parish families have already made a pledge to the campaign. This weekend, June 4/5, and next weekend June 11/12, we will have our Final Commitment Weekends at all of our parish Masses. Our campaign is heading towards the finish line. Farewell Reception for Margie Guadagno … Our Pastoral Associate, Margie Guadagno will be leaving our parish on July 1, after serving our commu-nity so very well through coordinating the RCIA Pro-gram and our Bereavement Ministry. We will hold a Farewell Reception for her after the 11:30 AM Mass in the Church Hall on Sunday, June 19. All are welcome to stop in to wish her well. Margie has accepted a new part-time position of the Director of Liturgy at our neighboring parish of St. Julie Billiart in Tinley Park. Our Eighth Grade Graduates … May and early June is a time for graduations. As a parish we want to celebrate all of our Eighth Grade graduates from the National Blue Ribbon for Academic Excellence Cardinal Joseph Bernardin School, and all from our wonderful local public schools. Next Sunday, June 12, at the 10:00 AM Mass, we in-vite our Eighth Grade Parish graduates to a Mass of Thanksgiving to God for this moment of transition in their lives. Party, Party, Party … In the new Archdiocesan “Renew My Church” effort, parishes will be grouped together in clusterings, and encouraged to work together more closely on regional ministry. Thankfully, our local parishes are already a bit ahead of the curve in this area, having sponsored a common regional Catholic School for the past 16 years. [This past year St. Stephen Parish and St Eliza-beth Seton Parish have worked together in a common Teen Ministry and Young Adult Ministry.] More such efforts will develop in the years ahead. One of the ways that a wider community becomes a reality is not only through shared missions and minis-try, but also through social bonds. On Friday, June 24 from 7:30 to 10:30 PM, St. Julie Parish in Tinley Park is hosting ROOF FEST a four-parish [St. Elizabeth Seton, St. Francis, St. Julie, and St. Stephen parishes] Adult Party. There will be an inexpensive cash bar, food trucks, DJ entertainment offered in a huge tent, etc. This is the first time that the four parishes have spon-sored a common party. We will sell a $5 “admission

ticket” which can be redeemed for beer/wine/pop/water etc., and allow us to estimate our expected attendance. We will send a mailing out to all parishioner families to make ROOF FEST reservations. Save The Date!!! It should be a great community night out. Would you like to drive a car like the one Pope Francis is driven around Rome in? … Last summer we engaged in a construction project on the exterior walls and windows of the Cardinal Jo-seph Bernardin School building. The school families contributed $100,000 and St. Elizabeth Seton Parish contributed $60,000, all toward the $375,000 cost of the project. The remaining $215,000 cost was taken as a loan by the four parishes from the Capital Repair Fund. To repay this loan over four years, the four par-ishes will have a summer raffle. This year’s raffle is for a new 2016 Ford Focus. Pope Francis is driven around Rome in a Ford Focus, so we are raffling off what we are fondly calling: “The Pope’s Car!” The car that is being raffled off was recently parked at our church’s east entrance. Raffle tickets are $50 each or three tickets for $100. We have just mailed out order forms to every parish family. When you return your order form, the parish office will fill out your ticket(s), and mail your ticket stub(s) back to you. The winner does not need to be present at the drawing to win. As in any big raffle, the winner is responsible for all taxes, license, fees, and insurance. The raffle for the car will be held at 9:30 PM at St. Julie Billiart Parish in Tinley Park, during ROOF FEST. [You can buy a $5 admission ticket to ROOF FEST at the time you place your raffle ticket order.] Wouldn’t’ it be nice to win a new set of wheels? Help to “Paint The Fence” … In the books “Tom Sawyer” and “Huck Finn” there is a wonderful scene where they trick others to help them paint a fence. If their friends will give them a quarter, they will allow them to work. The ROOF FEST four-parish party on Friday, June 24, needs about four teens to help set up from 3:00-4:30 PM; and we need 12 adults, in two six-person teams to assist at the party in two shifts, from 7:00-9:00 PM and from 9:00-11:00 PM. There is a sign-up sheet on the counter in the Narthex. [You will get free admission to the fest, and I will buy you a liquid libation.]

Keep Smiling!

Some Personal Mini Creeds By Ronald Rolheiser

When the Lord saw her, he was moved with pity for her and said to her, “Do not weep.”

We are all familiar with the Nicene and the Apostles’ Creeds, the two great faith-summaries that anchor our faith. Without them, eventually we would drift off the path and lose our way. Creeds anchor us. But the great creeds are like huge rivers that need smaller tributaries to bring their waters into various places. Thus, we also need mini-creeds, short, pithy truth-statements that anchor us morally and spiritually. We all, no doubt, have our own favorite mini-creeds. Here are some of mine: • Love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear.

Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. Jack Layton, leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada, in a letter to the people of Canada, just before dying of cancer.

• The great challenge is living your wounds through instead of thinking them through. It is better to cry than to worry, better to feel your wounds deeply than to understand them, better to let them enter into your silence than to talk about them. The choice you face constantly is whether you are taking your wounds to your head or your heart. Henri Nouwen, journaling while working through a clinical depression.

• When something hard happens to you, you have two choices in how to deal with it. You can get bitter, or better. Donald Miller, challenging young people to a higher ethic.

• When I despair, I remember that all through history, the way of truth and love has always won. There have been murderers and tyrants, and for a time they can seem invincible. But in the end they always fall. Think of it, always. Mohandas K. Gandhi, asserting his belief in the ultimate triumph of truth and goodness.

• Nothing that is worth doing can be achieved in our lifetime; therefore we must be saved by hope. Nothing we do, however virtuous, can be accomplished alone; therefore we must be saved by love. No virtuous act is quite as virtuous from the standpoint of our friend or foe as it is from our standpoint. Therefore we must be saved by a final act of love, which is forgiveness. Reinhold Niebuhr, on the complexities of sanctity.

• This is how we grow: by being defeated decisively by constantly great things. Rainer Marie Rilke suggesting that a defeat by the other world is better than a victory in this one.

• Our faith begins at the very point where atheists suppose that it must end. Our faith begins with the bleakness and power of the night of the cross, abandonment, temptation, and doubt about everything that exists. Jurgen Moltmann on the dark night of faith and the cross.

• There comes a time in one’s life where the question is no longer: What can I still do to remain productive and to make a contribution in this world? Rather the question becomes: How can I live now so that when I die my death will be an optimal blessing for my loved ones, for the church, and for the world? Henri Nouwen on the difference between giving our lives away and giving our deaths away.

• Don’t be afraid to suffer, give the heaviness back to the weight of the earth; mountains are heavy, seas are heavy. Rainer Marie Rilke writing to a friend grieving the death of a loved one.

• Love must wait for wounds to heal. It is this waiting that we must do for each other, not with a sense of mercy, or in judgment, but as if forgiveness were a rendezvous. Novelist Anne Michaels on empathy.

• In this life there is no such thing as a clear-cut pure joy. But this intimate experience in which every bit of life is touched by a bit of death can point us beyond the limits of our existence. Henri Nouwen on how we live now, “mourning and weeping in this valley of tears”.

• Wake up lovers; it is time to start the journey! We’ve seen enough of this world; it is time to see another. Rumi, suggesting that mostly we are asleep to the other world and to the deeper things of this one.

• Don’t surrender your loneliness so quickly. Let it cut more deep. Let it ferment and season you as few human or even divine ingredients can. Hafiz, Fourteenth Century, Sufi Mystic poet.

• To reach satisfaction in all, desire satisfaction in nothing. To come to possess all, desire the possession of nothing. To arrive at being all, desire to be nothing. To come to the knowledge of all, desire the knowledge of nothing. To come to enjoy what you have not, you must go by a way in which you enjoy not. To come to the possession you have not, you must go by a way in which you possess not. To come to what you are not, you must go by a way in which you are not. John of the Cross on finding life by giving it away.

Journey with the Lord and let your heart hear God’s Words….

By Margie Guadagno St. Elizabeth Seton Pastoral Associate

When the disciples

met Jesus

on the road,

they were

disappointed

and sad.

He walked with them

and listened to

their story.

Then, by opening up

the Scriptures

He gave them hope!

He helped them see

that they were

not abandoned

or left orphaned,

that God

was with them

and would

always be part

of their journey.

The Road To EmmausThe Road To EmmausThe Road To Emmaus The Road To Emmaus The Road To EmmausThe Road To EmmausThe Road To Emmaus

I Have To Be What???

A s a teenager, I always hated being the oldest. First, because the oldest had to ‘pave the way’

for the younger children, and second, because I had to be the protector, the ‘watcher-outer,’ and worse still, the example, always mindful that what I did my younger sister would be quick to imitate. And not only that, my mom told me that I must be a good example for her. I promised myself that I would never inflict these strict, unfair standards on MY children. They would be able to live their lives being their own person without having to take responsibility for anyone’s actions except their own. After all, that’s how it is when you’re an adult, isn’t it? We don’t have anyone bossing us around. We can keep our own hours as we please, no time clocks to punch, and we can spend our money on ourselves buying whatever we want whenever we want…..right? Right. One thing I have learned is, that when you ARE an adult, the adjective that is applied more than any other is responsible adult. If that can’t be applied to you, you’re not there yet. Another thing I learned is, the same adjective applies to us as Christians. We must be responsible. Now, you might ask, exactly how is a Christian responsible? By attending Mass every week? Yes. By supporting our community financially to the best of our ability? Yes. By making sure our children learn about Jesus and how to follow him? Yes. AND by being witnesses to our faith. This one is a little more difficult because

witnessing involves so much more than just following rules, it involves being a good example to those around us. (I think this is where I started!!!) We must promote Christianity in the way we act at home, in the way we act in the workplace, in the way we act in our social groups. We have a responsibility to pass on, through our actions, what it means to be a Christian. Another way we can witness is by formally joining a group that helps lead others to know and love God. It can be as a catechist teaching Religious Education/Formation, as a Marriage Prep leader helping young couples understand that God is a partner in their marriage, or as an RCIA team member helping candidates discover the way God is present in their lives. And the nice thing is, you don’t have to have a sweeping knowledge of Catholic doctrine. But what you DO have to have is a love of God in your heart and a desire to help others know that God loves them, too. Everything else will flow from there.

I n this day and age, it is very easy to ‘let George do it.’ But God not only wants George to do it… he wants

Mary and Joe and Linda and Tom and Karen to do it, too. All of us need to find that place where we can be of use to others and witness to the wonders that God has done for us, each in our own little way. Jesus was our example of living the way God wants us to live. Now it’s our turn to be that example for others. My mother would be proud.

The Archdiocese of Chicago has resources available to help you celebrate the Year of Mercy with Mercy Moments, weekly Mercy Mondays, a Jubilee Year of Mercy tweet site [#jubileemercy], and Vatican resources. CELEBRATE THE YEAR OF MERCY

Mercy Challenge

To live intentionally and participate in the Renew My Church movement, invite someone who doesn’t attend mass to join you! Creating a welcoming environment to newcomers may be a small gesture on your part, but a big influence for those ready to begin their journey with Christ.

L ast February, Archbishop Cupich laid out a dynamic pastoral vision for the Archdiocese of Chicago, which he called Renew My Church. Rather

than being simply an initiative, one among many things that the Archdiocese will do in a given time period, this Renew My Church vision, and its pastoral planning process, is fundamental to who we are as the local Church here in Chicago. It concerns not just a set of actions or strategies taken in isolation and checked off a list when completed, but it also lays down a fundamental and comprehensive approach to living as communities of missionary disciples united to Christ and to each other. The goal of this overall approach is to foster, nurture and support renewed vitality in our parish communities—not just for the Catholics who participate in those communities, but for the sake of those people and neighborhoods in which our parishes are placed. Christ gathered His Church so that it could be sent out, and we are setting a course that will strengthen and prepare our parishes for evangelization and mission for generations to come. In an effort to support the parishes and vicariates of the Archdiocese as they begin the Renew My Church process, the Office for the New Evangelization is sponsoring a practical evangelization event called Make Disciples, featuring Sherry Weddell, the author of the bestselling book Forming Intentional Disciples. During this event, Sherry will share ways to awaken in others a personal faith in Christ, and discuss how to build cultures of discipleship that can transform parishes, helping them move from maintenance to mission-oriented communities alive in the power of Jesus Christ.

During this event, you will: • Learn how making discipleship intentional is a game

changer for the life of the parish • Explore how awakening and revitalizing your faith

builds community • Learn to recognize pre-discipleship stages of the

spiritual journey and help others move forward • Hear how parishes around the country are doubling

the number of intentional disciples in 5 years—and how yours can too

• Learn how parish-based evangelization processes and other existing parish programs can create a culture of discipleship This is a perfect opportunity for parishes and their parishioners, throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago, to start building a common language, vision and understanding around evangelization and mission in preparation for the Renew My Church process.

Make Disciples begins at 9 am (check-in begins at 8 am) on June 25, at St. John Brebeuf Parish Ministry Center, and ends at 4:30 p.m. Parish groups and individuals can register at www.evangelizechicago.org/make-disciples/ and clicking the Registration button. Registration is $60, which includes a light breakfast and lunch. Scholarship funds are available to enable those who might need them to attend at a greatly reduced rate. There are also group discounts available, so if you plan on bringing a group, or if individuals need scholarship assistance, they should contact Liz Johnson at [email protected] or 312-534-3855. We hope to see you there!

CJB Alumni Receive Spirit Alive Award Four of CJB’s alumni received a very special award at Holy Name Cathedral in April. Maryclare Leonard, Gianna Mazenko, Meghan Mullin and Grace Rost graduated from CJB in 2013 and received The Spirit Alive Award which is presented to Catholic youth in high school who are in the senior level of Girl Scouts. This program assists them in discovering how the Holy Spirit moves in their lives, calling them to greater participation in the church’s ministry. Through the process they study how the Holy Spirit is alive in Scripture, the Catholic Church, in Prayer and in their Life. They were guided through this journey by CJB Parent, Mrs. Kerry Rost. CJB is proud of these four hard-working young women and wish them all the best in their future endeavors!

Page Eighteen TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME June 5, 2016

In the Lord’s Prayer, we ask God to forgive us as we forgive others. After we have knelt at Jesus’ feet like the unnamed woman in Luke, asking pardon, are we ready to extend pardon to those who have wronged us?

NEXT WEEK: FORGIVEN, NOT PERFECT

Have you seen the bumper sticker, “Christians aren’t perfect, they’re forgiven?” Jesus’ death and resurrection have opened the door to God’s forgiveness, whether our sin is great or small. Yet, we spend so much time living as if we are unforgiveable. What a difference it makes to ad-mit that we are sinners, turn to God, name our sin, and receive that mercy. The Pharisee pre-sumes that Jesus does not know the woman is a sinner, making her faithless. But Jesus is well aware that she is a sinner and a woman with great faith. If only the Pharisee could see her and himself as Jesus does, he’d have seen her faith and how God’s mercy can transform us all. He was a sinner. He broke the Law by not showing Jesus its required hospitality, but the woman shows Jesus hospitality. David, God’s anointed king, presumes to be above God’s command-ments and suffers the consequences for that presumption. Because he admits his sin, he ex-periences God’s great mercy.

The LORD forgives David for taking the wife of Uriah, and for having Uriah killed (2 Samuel 12:7-10, 13). The reading begins with Nathan the prophet’s condemnation of David. David had slept with Bathsheba, Uriah the Hittite’s wife and also arranged for Uriah’s death, even though Uriah had been a faithful soldier. He took Bathsheba into his palace as part of his harem. David thought that he had gotten away with this, that it was all a secret, but Nathan knew about what he had done. He confronted David by

telling a parable about a man whose only lamb was stolen by another and accused David of being the name who had stolen the lamb (Bathsheba). One must recognize one’s sinfulness before one can obtain forgiveness (not because God does not want to forgive us, but rather because we must be open to the forgiveness that God is offering. That is why David’s confession is so important.

If justification comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing (Galatians 2:16, 19-21).

Reflections for

ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY

TIME June 12,

2016

My God, my Mercy,

I have sinned against You. Fill me with

Your love today, that I might anoint those I

meet with the same gift of mercy that You

pour over me. Amen.

Justification means to be at peace with God. We are justified not by what we do, but by what God has done for us. We cannot earn God’s love, but we can trust in that love. This is what is meant by “faith,” trusting in God’s promise and embracing that love. When Paul says that he died to the law, he is saying that he tried to observe that law in all

its prescriptions, but this only brought frustration. He could only accept God’s love when he finally realized how impossible it was to be perfect or to force God to love us. This love is not earned through our actions. It is a free gift from God, and it is most clearly seen in the death and resurrection of Jesus.

SECOND READING

FIRST READING

REFLECTION

GOSPEL Jesus forgives the woman because of her great love (Luke 7:36 -- 8:3 [7:36-50]). The Pharisees taught that it was important to avoid contact with sinners. Sin was considered to be type of contagion. If one associated with a sinner, then one participated in that person’s guilt. This was

especially true of eating with someone who was a sinner, for it was considered to be an especially intimate social action. This sinful woman is not identified. Even though Simon had invited Jesus into his home, it is clear that he had not really invited Him into his heart. We hear him and his friends question whether Jesus is a prophet. They assume that Jesus did not know who the woman was, but, Jesus received her precisely because of who she was and what she had done. Jesus challenges Simon and the others with the simple lesson that one who has been forgiven much will be most grateful. God transforms a curse into a blessing. Jesus tells the woman that her faith has saved her.

SAINT OF THE WEEK BLESSED FRANZ

JAEGERSTAETTER (1412-1431)

Called to serve his country as a Nazi solider, Franz even-tually refused, and this husband and father of three daugh-ters (Rosalie, Marie and Aloisia) was executed because of it. Born in St. Radegund in Upper Austria, Franz lost his father during World War I and was adopted after Heinrich Jaeger-staetter married Rosalia Huber. As a young man, he loved to ride his motorcycle and was the natural leader of a gang whose members were arrested in 1934 for brawling. For three years he worked in the mines, then he became a farmer, married Franziska and lived his faith with quiet but intense conviction. In 1938 he publicly opposed the GermanAnschluss (annexation) of Austria. The next year he was drafted into the Austrian army, trained for seven months and then re-ceived a deferment. In 1940 he was called up again but al-lowed to return home at the request of the town’s mayor. He was in active service between 1940 and 1941 but was again deferred. His pastor, other priests and the bishop of Linz urged him not to refuse to serve if drafted. In 1943, he was called up again and reported to army offi-cials in Austria. When he refused to take the oath of loyalty to Hitler, he was imprisoned. Later he volunteered to serve in the medical corps but was not assigned there. During Holy Week he wrote to his wife: “Easter is coming and, if it should be God’s will that we can never again in this world celebrate Easter together in our intimate family circle, we can still look ahead in the happy confidence that, when the eternal Easter morning dawns, no one in our family cir-cle shall be missing--so we can then be permitted to rejoice together forever.” In May he was transferred to a prison in Berlin. Challenged by his attorney that other Catholics were serving in the army, Franz responded, “I can only act on my own conscience. I do not judge anyone. I can only judge my-self.” He continued, “I have considered my family. I have prayed and put myself and my family in God’s hands. I know that, if I do what I think God wants me to do, he will take care of my family.” On August 8, 1943, he wrote to Fransizka: “Dear wife and mother, I thank you once more from my heart for everything that you have done for me in my lifetime, for all the sacrifices that you have borne for me. I beg you to forgive me if I have hurt or offended you, just as I have forgiven everything… My heartfelt greetings for my dear children. I will surely beg the dear God, if I am permitted to enter heaven soon, that he will set aside a little place in heaven for all of you.” Franz was beheaded and cremated the following day. In 1946 his ashes were reburied in St. Radegund near a memorial inscribed with his name and the names of almost 60 village men who died during their military service. He was beatified in Linz on Occtober 26, 2007. His “spiritual testament” is now in Rome’s St. Bartholomew Church as part of a shrine to 20th-century martyrs for their faith.
