Airplane Betty JaneWhenever you see an airplane, you can think of Betty Jane. Betty Jane loves airports, airplanes, and anything to do withflying. Shesometimesthinksaboutthem so much she forgets to listen to what her parents and teachers tell her to do. Betty Jane’s father works at an airport. He knows that if Betty Jane doesn’t learn to watch and listen carefully, she will never beabletoflyanairplane.
Why is that…do you think?
Teaching Tip The“Attentive posture” of a student is very important because the whole body needs to be involved in watching and listening. This could be legs crossed, hands in lap, eyes on the teacher, etc. Once you have established your expectations and practiced them, you should be able to say “Let me see your attentive posture” and they will show you! Occasionally, you can have a surprise posture check. Give a small prize to the student who is most “Posture perfect”.
Fun Demonstrations: • Giveanassistantatoyfromtheclassroomtohold.Letthemtrytodistractthestudentswithitwhile
you are “teaching”. Tell the students to try to be attentive to you no matter what! To make it fun, give some silly instructions or unusual information. Then ask the students to raise their hands and try to repeat it back to you. Can they do it…or were they too distracted?
• Playagamecalled“Whatchanged?”Askthestudentstoclosetheireyes.Makeonesmallchangesuch as remove an earring, pick up a book, or cross your legs. When the students open their eyes, see if they can tell you what changed.
• Playasortinggame.Separatethestudentsbyshoetype(lacesorslip-ons),lengthofhair,stripedshirt or solid, boy or girl, etc. If they watch carefully they can tell you what you were sorting by. Let some of the students take turns sorting the class!

Duck and ChuckWhen ever you see a duck, you can think of Chuck. Chuck has a messy duck that he loves very much. His duck waddles in the rain, sloshes in themud, flaps hiswingsin the dirt, and poops everywhere! Once he even pooped on grandpa’s truck! Chuck didn’t make any of those messes, but his dad asked him to work hard and clean them up because he was responsible for Duck. He had to do it everyday no matter what!
Why is that…do you think?
Teaching Tip Imagine how much could get done in a day if our students were self motivated! Diligence just might become your favorite virtue! When you give an instruction, follow it up with a “fast start” sticker or stamp on the back of the hand or on the seatwork of the student who doesn’t delay. Call out a few names toward the end of a task. “I see that Becky is still working hard, Ibetshewillfinishstrong, too.Anytimeyougivethestudentsatask, leadtheminsayingthediligence catchphrase while on their way to do it. It’s fun!
Fun Demonstrations: • Dumptoysandgameswithlotsofpiecesonthecarpet.Instructthestudentsthatitdoesn’tmatterwhomadethemess,ifsomeoneasksyoutodoatask,thenyoushoulddoitwithdiligence.Approachthe carpet slowly and walk around the mess demonstrating a slow start. “Is that diligent?” “NO!” Pickupafewthingsandcasuallytossthemintothewrongcontainer.“Isthatdiligent?”“NO!”Aska student to demonstrate diligence. Then let all the students sort the toys into the proper bins and carry them to the shelves. There should not be one thing left.
• Afteramessyproject, playagamecalled“SecretScraps”.Pickonescrapasyour“SecretScrap”and leave it where it is. Tell the students to each pick up 10 scraps and bring them to you (or more if theycancounthigher).Rewardtheonewhofoundyour“SecretScrap”!
