IntroductionWhyDoWeWait?Sincefirstwritingthisbookin1981,Ihavebeenamazedatthegrowththe

Church has experienced in the area of prophecy. There has been a mightyrestoration of many aspects of prophecy. This restoration has made thisparticular book evenmore relevant today than when it was originally writtensome12yearsago.

My personal choice was the New International Version, althoughthere are several other good translations. Consequently, almost all of thereferencesinthisbookarenowfromtheNIV.Second,Idecidedtoupdateoneof the mechanics I utilize when I am operating in the gift of prophecy. Perhaps thesinglegreatestmisconception in theChurch todaydealswithour failure to take God at His written Word literally. Usually that can beattributed to two basic errors in our reasoning toward God. The first

misconceptioninourreasoningleadsustobelievethatthereisanotherspiritualrealmthatwemustsomehowdiscover,experienceorachieveinordertooperateinthegiftofprophecy.However,this“allegedspiritualrealm”doesnotexist.Consequently,wecannotdiscover,experienceorachievesomethinginarealmthatsimplydoesnotexist.Thereisnootherspiritualrealm!Itdoesnotexist!WearelivingintheKingdomofGodrightnow,today.ThereisnogreaterspiritualrealminwhichtolivethantheKingdomofGod.God’s“Kingdom”istherealmHe has prepared for us (believers) while here on earth. It is in this presentspiritual realm,orKingdom, that theScriptures teach thegiftofprophecyhasbeenmadeavailabletoeverybeliever.

Thesecondmisconception iswhat Icall the“oldschool” theologywhichstates thatGod has only a few, choice, select individuals through which Hespeaks to the Body of Christ prophetically. That is simply not a scripturalperspective.TheapostlePaulwrotetothechurchatCorinthandsaid,“Foryoucanallprophesy...”(1Cor.14:31).Thiswasalargechurchwiththousandsofmembers.Paulsaidtheycouldallprophesy.ItistruethatPaulwrotetheywereto do all things “decently and in order” (I Cor. 14:40 KJV). However, thispresupposed that theywere going to doall things! We have always seen thisverseasarestrictionofsorts, orawarningagainstprophecy.Onthecontrary, itwasandisanencouragementtodoallthings!Justremembertodo“allthings”in an orderly fashion, as outlined throughout the fourteenth chapter of FirstCorinthians. That includes theoperationof thegift ofprophecy specifically inthe setting of the public gathering or assembly. Furthermore, if only a few, choice, select individuals have been called of God to operate in the gift ofprophecy,thenobviouslythedisciplesatEphesus(Acts19:1-6)wereunawareofthis“supposed”theology.Thesemenweremerelybelievers(likeyouandme),newly filledwith theHolySpirit (v.6), andyet theyall spoke in tongues andprophesied!Obviously, it is our contemporary theology that is in error. It hasbeenthe traditionsandunbeliefofmanthathas limitedtheChurch’saccess tothispreciousgiftandnotthewillofGod!God’sWordhasalwaysbeencrystalclear on this point. That point is, all Spirit-filled believers can immediatelyoperateinapropheticgiftasaresult,orevidence,ofbeingfilledwiththeHolySpirit(Acts19).Thisfactwastrueandapplicabletothebelieversthenanditistrue and applicable to believers now. Amen! Whether we are referring to a“brandnew”convertortothe“seasoned”believerwhohasbeenservingGodforyears, clearlyallcanprophesyasinspiredbytheSpiritofGod.

Let us use the words general and special to better clarify this gift of

prophecy.Inthisbookwedealwiththeso-called“general”giftofprophecy.Wewilldefine thewordgeneral as“universalandavailable toallbelievers.”This“general” gift seldom, if ever, contains any revelation or specific divineinformation.Itseldomcontainsanydirection.Itseldomcontainsanycorrection.This “general” gift is simply (yet effectively) used by God to strengthen,encourageandcomfortthebeliever(1Cor.14:3).ThisisthegiftGodhasmadeavailable to all believers. In addition, God has His prophets and there is that“special”giftofprophecyreservedfortheoffice(ministry)oftheprophet(Eph.4:11). This “special” gift of prophecy contains specific revelation (divineinformation) into the mind and counsel of God. It can be directive andcorrective. This“special”giftofprophecyisonlyforthosecalledtotheofficeofa prophet and not for theBody ofChrist in general. That iswhyPaulwrites,“Are all prophets?” (1Cor. 12:29). The implied answer is no.ButwhenPaulfurtheraddressesthesamechurch,hewrites,“Therefore,mybrothers[menandwomenalike],beeagertoprophesy,anddonotforbidspeakingintongues”(1Cor14:39).Doesthisrepresentaconflict?Ithinknot.Itshowsusthatthereareclearly two types of prophecy in the Church (excluding false prophecy, ofcourse). The “general” gift of prophecy is for us all. On the other hand, the“special” gift is a specific gifting for certain believers (prophets) as Godsovereigntychooses.TheScripturesteachthatGodhasplacedsome, notall, intheChurch tofill thesefive“ascensiongiftministries.”Ephesians4:10and11says,“He[Christ]...ascended...,”thenHegave“...sometobeprophets....”Thusthe term “ascension gift ministries.” Not everyone will be a prophet, buteveryone canprophesy.Noteveryonewillhave the“special”giftofprophecy, buteveryonewillhaveaccesstothe“general”giftofprophecyasGodinspiresthem.

Concerning this “general” gift of prophecy for all believers, what do theScriptures really say? What does the New Testament really give us today asworkingexamplestofollowinourlives, onthissubject?FromScripture, hereisthe conclusion I have drawn: if we can all speak in tongues, then we cancertainlyallprophesy.Whythenistheresuchconfusion?

ChapterOneHowYouCanBegintoProphesy!Asdifficulttocomprehendasthisconceptmayfirstappear,youcanbegin

toprophesy!Yes,you!Howdoyoubegin? The first step is tohave the initialdesire to do so.Webster defines the word desire as “to long for or crave, toexpressawishfor.”

Asbelievers, weallneed“tolongforortocrave”theHolySpirittouseusinprophecy.WeneedtoexpresstoGodour“wish”tobeinspiredbytheHolySpirit to prophesy. To put it anotherway, ifwe donotwant to prophesy, weprobablywillnotprophesy.Theissuehere iswillingnessandcooperationwiththeWordofGod.

For the purpose of clarity, the following is the “groundwork” that eachreader of this book needs to have in place. This spiritual “groundwork” is aprofileofcurrentcircumstancesfromwhichyouwillbebestabletoincorporatethematerialfoundwithinthesepages.

InitialDesireThedesire toprophesy isessential.Thisdesire isnota theological issue,

but rather a heart issue. In other words, we, as believers, should want toprophesy.Peoplehavetoldme,whilediscussingthisgiftofprophecy,thattheypersonallyhavelittleornodesiretoprophesy.Iimmediatelyreply,“Thencheerup,youprobablyneverwith”Afterall,whatdoweexpectGodtodo?Hewillnotoverrideourwill.Hewillnotgiveusanymore incentive toprophesythanHehasalreadygivenusintheScriptures,whichhappenstobeHisie-vealedwillforallmankind.ItisasifGodallowsustogointothe“river”ofexperienceasfaraswewantto.It’sourchoice.IfwehungertobelikeHim,Hewillleadusandguideus intoall truth. Iwould evengo so far as to say that there is somethingwrongwithourexperience.

Concerning prophecy, the Scriptures say that we should eagerly desirespiritualgifts,especiallythegiftofprophecy(1Car.14:1).Wecontinuetoreadin the same chapter (v. 12) where Paul says we should be “eager to havespiritualgifts.”Weshould“eagerlydesirethebestgifts”(1Cor.12:31)andweshould“be eager to prophesy” (1 Cor. 14:39). It is abundantly clear that theWord ofGod commands us to desire this experience. It is for all believers—great or small, minister or layman, man or woman, adult or even responsiblechild. However, we must have that initial desire to speak forth a word ofprophecy.Godleavesthatuptous.Letusall“launchout”infaith,andtakeonthedesiresGodhasprovidedforusall.Oneofthesedesiresistobeactiveinthegiftofprophecy.

LookforOpportunitiesOnceourpropheticdesiresbegintoagreewithGod’sdesires,wemustthen

lookforanopportunitytouseourgiftofprophecy.Letme illustratewhat Imeanbyexamining thiswordgiftas it relates to

prophecy. Failing to look for an opportunity to obeyGod in prophecy is likeleavingagiftinitsbox, fullywrapped, unusedandunappreciated.Thatcanbeapotential waste of great proportion.Gifts, given by God to the Church, weremeanttobeopened,usedandenjoyed.ThebeautyofaGod-givengiftisfoundintheactofgivingit!PassivityisnotafruitoftheSpiritanditcancauseustomissGod in the area of operating in prophecy. The gift of prophecy needs to be“activated”withinus.

Paulwrote,“Sinceyouareeagertohavespiritualgifts, trytoexcelingiftsthatbuildup thechurch”(1Cor.14:12b).Notice thathewasmakingadirectreference tousing thegiftsof theSpirit toaccomplishbuildinguporedifying.SurelyprophecyedifiestheBodyofChrist.Weallneedtohaveahumble,yetaggressive desire to bless others, instead of looking to be blessed ourselves.Your gift orministry is not for you personally, but has been given to you inordertoblessothers. Therefore, lookingforopportunitiestoblessGod’speopleis essential. Everybody loseswhen you fail to yield toGod in prophecy.Youlose because you disobeyed the leading of the Holy Spirit and chose not toprophesy. The person or group of people to whom you were supposed toprophesyalsoloses.Butobediencealwaysbringsablessing!

Peter and John stated this principle of looking for an opportunity sobeautifullyinActs3:6.“ThenPetersaid,‘SilverorgoldIdonothave,butwhatIhaveIgiveyou.InthenameofJesusChristofNazareth,walk.’”

Let me interject here just a word or two of caution about looking foropportunitiestoprophesy.Althoughweneedtobediligentintheuseofourgift,wealsoneedtoexercisepatienceandwisdom.Wemustneveroverlookthefactthat prophecy does not find its inspiration in the “will ofman.” Second Peter1:21says,“Forprophecy[inthiscasethepropheciesnowcanonizedastheOldTestamentforyouand1]neverhaditsorigininthewillofman,butmenspokefromGodas theywerecarriedalongby theHolySpirit.” Isn’t thatabeautifulillustration of how personal prophecy operates in our lives today? Personalprophecy also has its origins in the Holy Spirit asHe “carries us along” byinspiring us to prophesy.Always remember thatGod is theOnewho initiatestrueprophecy, not the impulsesofman.Nomatterhowsincere those impulsesmaybe, theystandinsharpcontrasttotheinspirationoftheHolySpirit.Oneis

area aswell.Myexperiencehas taughtme, however, thatmorepassivity thanaggressiveness seems to plague the Church today. Nevertheless, I need tomention at this point that some of us can become too eager to prophesy andconsequentlymisstheinspirationoftheHolySpirit.Thus,weriskgivingafalseprophecy.Thesolution to thisproblemis for thebeliever to learn tobe ledbytheHolySpiritinknowingwhere, whenandtowhomheshouldprophesy.Thatis accomplished through timeandexperiencewithprophecyandwith learningthevoiceoftheHolySpirit.Itisnottheintentofthisbooktocreateapropheticfree-for-all.

There is great joy when God has used you to bring a blessing intosomeone’s life throughthegiftofprophecy. It is indeed“moreblessed togivethantoreceive”(Acts20:35).TheblessingoccurswhenyouareenabledbytheHolySpirittogive“strengthening,encouragementandcomfort”(1Cor.14:3)toa brother or sister in Christ because you obeyed God and spoke a word ofprophecytothem.

Yousee, prophecyisthedirecttestimony(evidence, statement, witnessandspoken reputation) of Jesus Himself, although it is spoken through a believer(Rev.19:10).Givingaprophecy isspeaking theactual testimonyofJesus toabelieverorgroupofbelievers, usually inachurchorsimilarsetting.TheLordJesus is using you as a “vessel” to contain and then “pour out” His preciouswordstotherecipient.Whatabeautifulsetting!Itisindeedanexampleof“bodyministry”atwork.Soasbelievers,weneed tominister tooneanother throughthespiritofprophecy. That ishowChrist intended it tobe.“Butwehave thistreasureinjarsofclaytoshowthatthisallsurpassingpowerisfromGodandnotfromus”(2Cor.4:7).Asthisverseplainlystates,thepowerissurelyfromGod.ItisalsoequallyclearinthisversethatGodhaschosentouse“jarsofclay”tocontainthistreasureofHisHolySpiritwithallHispowerandgifts!

StartSmallInitially operating in prophecymeans starting out small.Zechariah 4:10

says, “Who despises the day of small things? Men will rejoice when.... ”Initially,GodinHiswisdomoftenrestrictsus,confinesusandguardsusfromtoomuchpropheticactivitytooquickly.Inthisweshouldallrejoice!Isaiah28furtherillustratesthisprincipleofstartingoutsmallinverses9and10:“WhoisitHe is trying to teach?Towhom isHeexplainingHismessage?Tochildren

This principle of God’s teaching and weaning us is especially relevantwhenwebegintooperateinprophecy.Indeed,Godteachesus“littlebylittle”inallthings.Accordingtothesetwopassages,Godteachesusandexplainstruthtous(weansusfromthebreast)justasamotherwouldayoungchild.Goddoessogradually andwithmuch love. Be reminded that “the day of small things” isGod’splan.

It is often the novice who becomes impatient and hastily moves out inprophecy.Itispossibletoweanourselvesprematurely.Weallarelookeduponby God as children who need time to grow. Children also need supervision,trainingandcorrection.Itisthesamewiththebeginnerinprophecy.Ultimately,Godwill feed solid food touswhoaremature inprophecyasweconsistentlyuseourgift.

ManyyearsagoIreceivedaprophecyfromaprophetofGod.Hisprophecytomeclearlyillustratedthatpointofafather-childrelationshipwithGodwhenlearningaboutprophecy.Hereis thatprophecy:“TheLordhasa jealousyoveryou asa father to a son andHe is not going to let anything spoil you.He isgoingtoworkwithyouuntilyouhavebecomethefullgrownsonthatcanlaborwithHim....”Aswe train our earthly children in the natural areas of life, wegraduallygivethemmoreandmoreresponsibility.Apparently,accordingtotheprophecyIreceived,Goddealswithusthesamewayanearthlyfatherwould.

I have seenmany Christians “start out” in prophecy “full steam ahead,”only to wind up spiritually “shipwrecked” six months later. They becamedisillusioned at their own humanity. They wanted everything right at thatmoment with no mistakes. They misunderstood the learning process of God.Why?Theyfailedtorecognizetheimportanceoftakingtheirtime,“provingallthings”and“notdespisingthedayofsmallthings”concerningprophecyintheirlives.

Plainlyandsimply,ittakestimetogetacquaintedwithhowGodwantstouseyouinthegiftofprophecy.Prophecyisnearlyasmuchaskillasitisagift.Skills take time to learn., fine tune and perfect. So do not underestimate theimportance of “starting out small.” There is divine protection there for thebeginner in that. This principle is clearly seen in Proverbs 20:2 1: “Aninheritance[gift]quicklygainedatthebeginningwillnotbeblessedattheend.”

Page 16: You can all prophesy : a balanced approach to giving and receiving personal prophecy

Everyone certainly desires the blessing of God on all that they do, frombeginningtoend!

For example, I personally began to prophesy to those Christians I feltcomfortablewithas friends. That isoneof thebestways tostart.Thismethodallows you to be less apprehensive of rejection, failure or misunderstanding, since there is some credibility already established in. your friendship. Thisapproach helps eliminate much of the fear surrounding the actual delivery ofprophecy.ThenexttimeyouarepromptedbytheHolySpirittoprophesy, yourconfidencewillbegreater aswell as,hopefully, youreffectiveness.Donotbeconcerned if you have certain fears thatmake it difficult to prophesy at first. That iswhy I encourage beginners tominister first to thosewhom they knowwillcooperatewiththeirlearningexperience.Eventually,mostoftheprophetic“butterflies”willdisappear.

Anothergoodwaytostartoutsmall inprophecyis to“stepout” insmallinformal meetings, such as cell groups, home meetings, house groups orotherwise less public gatherings.Do not pressure yourself by trying to “breakinto”prophecyduringa largepublicmeeting.Usuallyyourmeasureof faith istoosmallforsuchspiritualresponsibilities.Itispossibletodoso,butitisrare.Personally,Ibegantoprophesyinsmallinformalmeetingsforthisveryreason.Wherethereislesspressure,thereislesschanceoferror,hence,youwillwanttoprophesyagain.Thatisthekeytomaturinginthegiftofprophecy.

Confirmation:AToolforBeginnersStill another way in which to begin to prophesy is to take advantage of

what I call the confirming prophecy. This opportunity arises when someoneother thanyourself stepsout first andgives awordofprophecy that agrees in

Page 17: You can all prophesy : a balanced approach to giving and receiving personal prophecy

This will surelyencourage everyone involved and especially those who ministered theprophecies. Paul wrote, concerning the confirmation of God’s plan, “Everymattermustbeestablishedby the testimonyof twoor threewitnesses” (2Cor13:1b).

LearnasYouGoThe word learn is defined as “gaining knowledge, comprehension, or

Learning and receiving apply to the supernatural gift of prophecy.Frequently,inprophecy,youlearnasyougo.Inonewayprophecyisagift.Theidea is that the “gift” is the ability to prophesy, to speak a directly inspiredmessagefromtheHolySpirit.Inquiteanotherwayitisalearningprocess.Thisprocessincludesseveralaspects.First,thereistheskillindelivering(speaking)theprophecy(throughaneffectivechoiceofwordsorphrases).Second,thereistheaspectof timing, as towhen togive theprophecy.Third, there isknowinghowtodelivertheprophecyinahealingmanner, whichmeansknowinghowtodeliver the prophecy in the right “spirit.” Fourth., you must learn whether todeliverthatprophecyinpublicorinprivate.Remember, alloftheseaspectsofprophecyneed tobe learned inorder todeliver thesupernaturalmessagemosteffectively.

Asyoubegin tooperate in thegiftofprophecy, it ispossible tomiss theproper timing to deliver your prophecy.According to FirstCorinthians 14:31,theHolySpiritwillpresentopportunities forall toprophesy in turn:“Foryoucanall prophesy in turn so that everyonemaybe instructed and encouraged.”This means that there are proper time slots in which prophecy is to operateduringapublicgatheringofbelievers.Thereisusuallyapreordainedtimeslotinwhich God would have you deliver your prophecy. PrefixandSuffixAnother important aspect of learning to prophesy is understanding the

words prefix and suffix. Let us define both words. Prefix is “an affix

(attachment) put before a word.” Suffix is “an affix (attachment) put after aword.” How then do we apply this information to operating in the gift ofprophecy?

Itisabsolutelyimperativethatyoumakeyour“inspiredmessage”whatitissupposedtobe:Prophecy!BythisImeanthatGodmakesityourresponsibilitytoproclaim:“TheLord says,”“TheHolySpirit says,”or somesuchpropheticprefix. It is necessary since you are declaring that Jesus is actually speakingthrough you. You are not giving your anointed opinion. You are not merelyreciting Scripture from a page. You are not reading some religious-soundingpoem or quoting from some author’s writings. By your act of faith, you aredeclaringverbally thatyouareGod’sspokesperson, speakingonGod’sbehalf.WhataprivilegetobepropheticallyusedandinspiredbyGodinsuchamanner!

By placing this prophetic prefix and suffix on your content, you aredeclaring that your message is from the Lord Jesus Christ. In otherwords, prophecy must be prophesied! There are various ways to convey theprophecy, butnomatterwhattheparticularstyleordelivery, youmustprophesytheprophecy!

I recommendusing a propheticprefix to yourmessage and, if necessary, endyourmessagewith a prophetic suffix such as “So says theLord” or othersimilar endings which denotes that prophecy was spoken. What you areattempting to do is to introduce the prophecy, deliver the prophecy, and thencloseoutyourprophecyastheLordconcludesthemessagethroughyou.ifyou, thebeliever, donotdeclarewhatyouare speaking tobeaprophecy, thenyouwillbeviewedas relegating thatmessage toamereopinion. At themost, youmay be sharing a “revelation” (1 Car. 14:26), and there is certainly nothingwrongwiththiscontribution. However, evena“revelation,”asitismentionedinthis context (1 Cor. 14:26), is not a true prophecy. Prophecy is separate anddistinctfromallothergifts.Therefore,itmusthaveitsownuniquequalitiesthatdistinguishitfromallothergifts.

One of the distinguishing features of prophecy is in its presentation as averbal gift. Prophecy must be presented or spoken as prophecy. It is thebeliever’sspeakingtheprophecythatmakeswhatheisspeakingeitherprophecyorsomethinglessthanprophecy.Again,itisuptothebelievertoprophesytheprophecy. maybethatGodwantsyoutoallowanotherbelievertogivetheprophecy.Thisprinciplemaynotmakesensetotheimmatureandinexperiencedbeliever, butitis true nevertheless. Many times in a meeting, there may be a “spirit ofprophecy” that would allow any believer to operate in the gift of prophecy.Obviously, everyone could not simultaneously begin to prophesy. ThatwouldnotbeGod’sorder for apublicmeeting. That is anexamplewhere taking the“backseat”(prophetically)isquiteapparent.PaulwrotetotheCorinthianchurchconcerningthesameprinciple.Hesaid,“Andifarevelationcomestosomeonewho is sitting down, the first speaker should stop” (1 Cor. 14:30). The KingJamesVersionsaysitthisway:“Ifanythingberevealedtoanotherthatsittethby, letthefirstholdhispeace.”Thiswasalessonintheproperuseofrevelation(prophecy) that theCorinthian churchhad to learn, and it is a lessonwemustlearn today. Remember, “The spirits of prophets are subject to the control ofprophets”(1Cor.14:32).

Many times God can place you in a time of rest as far as the gift ofprophecyisconcerned.Itisanotherwayyoulearntotakethe“backseat.”WhenGod is using you, then “give it all you have.” When the time for rest andrelaxation from prophetic activity comes, then accept it as also being part ofGod’splanforyourlife.ItiseasytofearthatGodwillneveruseyouagain,butsuchisnotavalidfear.YouactuallymaybelievesomethingiswrongwhenGodismerelygivingyoua“vacation”fromactivepropheticministry.Personally, IcherishthosetimesbecauseafterwardsIcomeoutofmyrestreadyformore.Ihavenotoverextendedmyselfprophetically,andIdidnotgivefalseprophecy.Why?These timesofdivinelyordained restdeveloped inmea“take thebackseat”attitudeorspirit.Remember,youwantqualityinyourpropheticministry,notnecessarilyquantity.

Perhapsinyourlife, asapropheticbeliever,Godmaywantyoutosimplypray about the situation He shows you. This particular situation may not besomethingthatmustbe“shared”ordeliveredtoanotherbeliever.Discretion inpropheticministry is always desirable. If youdevelop a tendency to “spill thebeans” every time you hear fromGod, it can have a negative effect on yourpropheticministry.AfaithfulstewardofprophecywillhandlewhatGodshowshimwith great care and patience.Hewill not allowGod’s precious propheticword to be hastily delivered. A prophetic steward will learn that unless theprophecyisdeliveredattheappointedtime, itcoulddomoreharmthangoodtothoseinvolved.

RejoiceWhenOthersAreUsedThird, we learn unselfishness in ministry as we rejoice when others are

used. The Scripture says, “Each of you should look not only to your owninterests, but also to the interests of others” (Phil. 2:4). “Honor one anotherabove yourselves” (Rom. 12:lOb). If another believer is being used of Godprophetically, rejoice with him (Rom.. 12:15). We must always unselfishlyencourage others wien they are being used of God. This again is a sign of ahumbleandproperattitude inministry.“Donothingoutof selfishambitionorvainconceit,butinhumilityconsiderothersbetterthanyourselves”(Phil.2:3).IfyourdesireistoseetheKingdomofGodgrowandtheBodyofChristbuiltup,thenyouwillwantotherstobeused.Sothemorebelieversoperatinginthegiftofprophecy,thegreaterthelevelofedification,exhortationandcomforttotheBodyofChrist.Afterall,isthisnotourgoal?Workingbymyself,Icangetonly a limited amountofwork accomplished. So, logically, whenothersworktogetherwithme, theamountofworkcompletedincreases.ItisthesameintheChurch today. There is certainlyplentyofwork todo forGod.Therefore,ourattitudeshouldbe“Lord,Iwanttobeateamplayer.”

ChapterTwoWhattoLookforinProphecyThe ancient Greek’s understanding of prophecy [propheteia] meant “to

speak [phemi] or flow forth [pro].” This tells us something of the nature andcharacter of prophecy. It is a verbalmessage. It is a “flowing forth”ofGod’swillandpurposefortheoccasion.Itislikea“stream”flowingfromthethroneofGod,spokentothebelieverandexpressingGod’sownhearttoHispeople.This“flowing forth” characteristic of prophecy iswhatmakes it unique among themanifestationsoftheHolySpirit, ifyouhavewitnessedprophecyinoperation,youknowexactlywhatImean.Prophecydoesindeed“flow”like“water”whenthegiftisinproperoperation.

For example, an individual “gives out” or “flows forth” with the verywords of God in a prophecy, meant for “strengthening, encouragement andcomfort”(1Cot14:3).Ifyoualsohappentopersonallyknowtheindividualwhois giving the prophecy, then youmay knowverywell thatwhat the person issaying is surely fromGod and notman.Your spirit tells you that there is noconceivable way that such a carnal, imperfect, finite individual couldmanufacturesuchspiritualwealthas that inagenuineprophecyfromtheHolySpirit. Speaking symbolically, the difference between the “vessel” and the“precious ointment” in the “vessel” is apparent.Your spirit tells you that thispropheticmessagehasfounditsorigininGod,andthatthis“treasure”hasbeenmerelydepositedin“earthenvessels”forthepurposeofthepropheticdelivery.

We,aspropheticbelievers,simply“receive”andthen“transmit”whatGodhassaidtous.Knowingthathelpsustounderstandtheverynatureofprophecy.Spirituallyspeaking,prophecyisa“receivingandtransmitting”ofwhatGodissaying, through a bs-liever. The believer does not “produce” the “signal,” thebeliever merely “receives” and then “transmits” the prophecy to anotherbeliever.The“signal”originatesfromtheHolySpirit.

Here is another simple, yet clear picture of what prophecy is. Picture inyourmindalengthoftypicalcopperpipeusedtocarrydomesticwaterinyourhome. Usually, prophecy has a message to remember or contains instructions, or a generaldirection, for the believer. Since that is the case, we as believers need to gobeyond just being emotionally affected by the prophecy, to allowing it toactually change our lives. But it can be done only by developing a way toaccuratelyrememberwhatGodhassaid.

ThisprocessofrememberingwhatGodhasspokeninaprophecybeginsbysurveying the prophecy in your mind. You then mentally assemble a generalthemeormessageofwhatwasspoken.Next, youmayaskseveralquestionsofthe prophecy. Another potential distraction to remembering a prophecy is what I’vetermed“prophetic filler.”Prophetic fillercansometimesbeconfusedwith theactual content of a prophecy. I amnot implying that prophetic filler is in anyway inappropriate in aprophecy.Mypoint is, it is still only filler andnot the“realstuff”ofwhichprophecyismade.Inotherwords, propheticfillerismerelythevehicle, modeorstyleofdeliveringaprophecy that thebelievergiving theprophecyuses. The importantpartof theprophecyisnothowmanytimesyouhear,“TheLordwouldsay”or“Yea,Mysonordaughter,”etc.,etc.Obviously,these kinds of phrases (prophetic filler) are not the actual content but are, nevertheless, a part of the prophecy that you are hearing. These phrases, or“filler,”canhelpinthedeliveryoftheprophecyandarethereforeproperintheirplace. Prophetic filler many times helps the believer to deliver the prophecy.Prophetic filler keeps the prophecy fluid and smooth by supplying certainphrases that help to identify the message as a prophecy. However, the mostimportant part is the content of the prophecy between these “filler” phrases.Yourresponsibility,astherecipientofaprophecy,istoputthe“filler”asideinyourmindandkeyinonthecontent.Asillustratedpreviously,weneedtokeepoureyeontheball!

TheTimeSlotsOurGodisaGodofexactorderandprecise,perfect timing.Nothingjust

“happens” in God, for all things are divinely planned. This powerful truthespecially applies to our relationship with God. Nothing in our lives merelyhappens.Instead,everythingispreciselytimedaccordingtoHiswill.“Thereisatime for everything, anda season for everyactivityunderheaven” (Eccl.3:1).“Hehasmadeeverythingbeautifulinitstime...”(Eccl.3:11).“Aman’sstepsaredirected by theLord” (Prov. 20:24a).This idea of precise and planned timingfromGodalsoappliestothepropheciesweasbelieversmayhavereceived.

When remembering prophecy, you need b recognizeGod’s“time slots.”Obviously, as in all measurements of time, the time element in prophecy isdividedintothreeparts:past, presentandfuture.Byplacingprophecyintooneormore of these time categories, you will be able to recall a much greaterpercentage of the total message. By mentally placing each segment of theprophecy into the appropriate time slot, you have simplified the memoryprocess. Now, when attempting to recall the prophecy, you have only threecategoriestodealwith:past, presentandfuture.

Thisparticularsystemhelpsyouto“cutthrough”theprophetic“filler”andget right to the “meat” or “core” of the prophecy. Many times when I ampersonally going over a prophecy, I follow this exact procedure. First letusdiscuss theelementof confirmation ina prophecy.Whenyoureceive a prophecy from another believer, you need to ask yourself, “Have Iheard this before from the Lord?” The Lord will often repeat propheticinformationtoyouforseveralreasons.First, theLordwantsyoutorecognizethe

Page 41: You can all prophesy : a balanced approach to giving and receiving personal prophecy

Lastly, if you tend to ignore the instructions of the Lord, thenrepetitious(confirming)prophecyservesasawarningthatGodseldomletsHischildren go their own way. God wants you to obey Him, not “miss” Him.Therefore,He iswilling torepeatHimself foryou. That iswhyconfirmingorrepetitiousprophecy is somethingyou shouldheed.Sohereagainare the fourreasonsforpropheticconfirmation:

1.Theimportanceofthegeneralcontent.2.Thetestingoftheprophecyinourlives.3.TheestablishingofamajorstatementbyGod.4.AwarningfromalovingandpatientheavenlyFather.The second “label” we can assign to prophecy says, “Does the content

represent any new material to the individual for whom it is intended?”Obviously,we all face this situation from time to time sinceGod continuallyunveils His will for us by means of prophecy. How then can we prove newmaterialinprophecytobegenuineandcorrect?Theansweristowaitonit.Thatis of extreme importance, since not all newmaterial is necessarily true. “Test[prove]everything.Holdontothegood”(1Thess.5:21),and“Dearfriends,donot believe every spirit, but test the spirits to seewhether they are fromGod,becausemanyfalseprophetshavegoneoutintotheworld”(1John4:1).Thesetwo verses are scriptural safeguards given by God that we all can apply toproving(testing)aprophecy.

Let me share with you one brief caution of which you should be awarewhendeterminingwhetherornot the“spirit”ofaprophecyisappropriate.Butfirst, to better understand the “spirit” of a prophecy, we need to recognizesomethingthatistrueofallbelievers:Weneedtorecognizeourlimitations. We

needtobehonestwithourselves.Weneedtogivetheprophecythe“benefitofthedoubt.”

Thus, allbelieversmustunderstandthatsometimesourownprejudicescangetinthewayofimpartiallytestingorjudgingthe“spirit”ofaprophecy.Yet,ifwe can accept this fact, we should be able to get a fairly accurate “witness”(determination)ofthe“spirit”ofaprophecy.Duetothehighlysubjective(basedonpersonalopinion)natureof thisparticularstep, inrememberingaprophecy,we as believers must admit at least the possibility of prejudiced judging of aprophecy and the “spirit”we feel it conveys. Just because a believer does notfullyunderstandtheentireprophecy(content),thatdoesnotmeanthe“spirit”iswrong or the prophecy false. For example, if theLord speaks firmly and in acorrectivemanner toward you in a prophecy, it does not necessarilymean the“spirit” is wrong. In other words, if you can be honest enough to separateprophetic content (which we will assume is accurate) from the “spirit” itconveyed, youshouldgetabetteroverallviewoftheprophecy, andthusabetterunderstanding.Thecontentmightseemsomewhatfirmtoyou;nevertheless, the“spirit”oftheprophecywaspeaceful, lovingandmostofall, true!

Strong prophetic content does not necessarily indicate a harsh “spirit” inprophecy.Learntoseparatethetwo.

Prophecy is supposed to be for “strengthening, encouragement andcomfort” (1 Cor 14:3). A good way to remember prophecy is to review the“spirit” of the prophecy and see if it accomplished those three things. Forexample, did the prophecy sound firm and fatherly, or was it pushy anddegrading? Did the “spirit” of the prophecy sound bossy, dictatorial andoverbearing, orwasitmerelyrequiringobediencetoGod?

We must understand the difference. The difference is, the first “spirit”humiliates, degradesanddemands.Thesecond“woos”ustowanttoobeyGod,aswewould aFatherwe love andwant to please. Also, in the “spirit” of theprophecy, is there an undertone of discouragement or an expectation of hope?GodalwayshashopeforusandHeoftenexpressesthishopeforusinprophecy.Ihavelookedatabelieveraridthoughtdoubtingly,“HowcouldtheLordhaveanything good to say to this person?”Then as the prophecywas delivered, inspite of my lack of faith, the Lord, through me, prophesied hope andencouragement to that believer. It was necessary for me to change my mindabout the believer over whom I prophesied. God never judges according tohumanstandards.Butifwejudgethatway, accordingtothenaturaleyeor theflesh, weriskquenchingorlimitingtheHolySpirit’soperatingthroughus.

Page 44: You can all prophesy : a balanced approach to giving and receiving personal prophecy

Another way to determine the “spirit” of a prophecy is to look at thequestion of fear. Ask yourself if the prophecy is conveying godly fear (Prov.1:7)orthefearwhichhas“torment”(IJohn4:18KJV),thatis,thetypeoffearassociated with punishment. The first fear is a healthy, positive attitude ofrestraint which leads you to obedience. The other fear is empty, hard on theemotions, and contains no sense of safety or security. This latter type of fearcondemnsyouandgivesyou“nowayout.”Whenrememberingprophecy,youneedtoidentifythe“spirit”ofthe“message”astothetypeoffearinit.Wasitgodlyfearortormenting,punishingfear?ThefearoftheLordisthebeginningof wisdom and knowledge and the other fear (empty, hollow, condemning, vague)istheresultofawrong“spirit”inaprophecy.

Occasionally, inordertorealizehealing, encouragementandlife, prophecymust beginwith the judgment (adjustments) ofGod, followed byHismercies(acceptance). “Let a righteousmanstrikeme—it is akindness; lethimrebukeme—itisoilonmyhead”(Ps.141:5a).Also,DavidcontinuedinPsalm119:71:“ItwasgoodformetobeafflictedsothatImightlearnYourdecrees.”Inverse67hesays,“BeforeIwasafflictedIwentastray,butnowIobeyYourword.”Aslongasthe“spirit”oftheprophecyisoneofhealing,thenweshouldbeabletosay,“...in faithfulnessYouhaveafflictedme” (Ps.119:75).ThatmeansGod’sjudgmentsarealwaysgiventokeepusinrightrelationshipwithHim.Prophecycan be one way in which God achieves this in our lives, if it has the right“spirit.”

The“Vessel”WhoDeliveredtheProphecyOur final point concerning what to look for in prophecy deals with the

For onereason, the person or the vessel can pollute, dilute, pervert and otherwisenegatively affect perfectly “good” prophecy. How? ChapterThreeHindrancesWhenGivingaProphecyIn the introduction to this book,we established that speaking in tongues

Hebrews 3:19says, “So we see that they were not able to enter, because of their unbelief”Later in thesamebook(chapter6,verse12)wefind thesewords:“Wedonotwantyou tobecome lazy, but to imitate thosewho through faith andpatienceinheritwhathasbeenpromised.”

There are many examples of the importance of faith in our lives. Allprayers toGodaremadeby faith.Allprogressin theChristianlife ismadebyfaith. We also prophesy according to the proportion of our faith (Rom. 12:6).Faith is thekey that“unlocks”everything in thespiritual realm.“AndwithoutfaithitisimpossibletopleaseGod...”(Heb.11:6).Strangelyenough,however,unbelief(lackorabsenceoffaithinGod)isnotthe“numberone”hindrancetooperating in the gift of prophecy. There are a number of reasons we do notoperate more freely in this gift. Common reasons include fear, pride, lack ofscriptural teaching, lack of exposure to good examples, etc. These are allhindrances, but none of these are the greatest or “number one” hindrance tooperatinginthegiftofprophecy. The“numberone”hindrancetooperatinginthe gift of prophecy is underestimating ourselves in God. To underestimatemeans“toplace too lowofavalueonsomethingorsomeone.”Specifically, itmeans placing too low of a value on our ability to operate in the gift ofprophecy.

AsChristians, weoften thinkalike.Did iteveroccur toyou thatatsomepointweallhavefeltasifGodcannotuseus?WeallhavequestionedGodandourselves and said, “This cannot beGod speaking tome.” I personallywouldliketoknowwherethismentalityoriginates, whichstatesthatourleadingsandpromptings to prophesy cannot be from God. Each believer needs to ask thesequestions:“AmIgoingtoallowGodtospeaktome?DoIhavespiritualearstohear?”

These questions show us that, hypothetically, there may be certainhindrances to receiving from the Lord through personal prophecy. Here aresomeof the hindrances I have noticed as Iminister in the gift of prophecy tootherbelievers.ThesearethegeneralareasinwhichIhaveexperiencedthemostresistance.Theseareasrepresent“strongholdsofourflesh.”Theseallopposetheproperreceptivityofprophecyinourlives.

maintainourspiritualstatusquoattheexpenseoftheprophecy.A self-preserving attitude can indicate our unwillingness to change. We

want to preserve our present state. Why? Sometimes change means pain. However, pain is natural to the growth process. Even when we considerprophecy, this principle of “no pain, no gain” certainly applies. Growth willalwaysrequire“sweatequity”onthepartofthebeliever.Thiscouldincorporatenewareasofresponsibility, hardwork, commitment, sacrificeandeven“dying”toourowngoalsasoutlined tous inapersonalprophecy. It isoftenour fleshthatresistschange. Therefore, whenwehearprophecythat implieschange, wesometimesrefusetoreceiveordiscernitproperlyinourheartsIwasministeringonce in centralPennsylvania at a small country church.Manyof thebelieverstherewereopentotheoperationofthegiftofprophecy. However, severaltimes, through prophecy, the Lord dealt with the self-preserving attitude of therecipients.Thewholethrustoftheseprophecieswastomotivatethebelieverstogrow in ministry. God wanted them to produce spiritually instead of merelyconsumespiritually.TheLordwassaying, throughthegiftofprophecy, that itwas “time to advance.”He said further that itwas time to stoppreserving thestatus quo in their lives and to get mobilized for God. On that night, Iencounteredaself-preservingattitudeinbelievers.

In my opinion, nothing hinders the “moving” of God more than a self-preservingattitude.Why?Self-preservation is just anicewayofbeingselfish.Selfish or self-centered believers do not like change. They do not like anycommitments or require-merits put on their lives. However, there are usuallyconditions to every personal prophecy and the recipients must meet theseconditions, ormissGod’sbestfortheirlives.

Matthew 16:21-25 illustrates a self-preserving attitude in the life of theapostlePeter.ForPetertoagreethatJesusmustbecrucifiedwouldhaveruinedallofPeter’s(selfish)plans:“‘Never,Lord!’hesaid.‘Thisshallneverhappentoyou!’”(v.22).AsfarasPeterwasconcerned,hispersonalstatusquowasbeingthreatened and change was approaching much too rapidly. Jesus rebuked thisattitude(which, bytheway, wasofthedevil)andsaidtoPeter,“GetbehindMe,Satan!YouareastumblingblocktoMe;youdonothaveinmindthethingsofGod, but the things of men” (v. 23). Looking Through a Distorted View of God’sTiming

Our next hindrance to receiving prophecy is a distorted view of Godsprophetic timing.Luke24:13-35 illustrateshowithinderedthese twodisciplesafter Jesus’ death They too had a distorted view ofGod’s timing. There theywere, totallydiscouragedandwithouthope;theirMessiahwasdead.Atraveler,a stranger to them both, had joined the disciples as they walked along, andinquired about this Jesus of Nazareth. The disciples could hardly believe thisstranger’s ignorance of the events of the last few days. They explained fullywhathadtakenplace, righttothatpresenthour. However, theyhadadistortedviewpoint.Theysaid,“ButwehadhopedthatHe[Jesus]wastheOnewhowasgoingtoredeemIsrael.Andwhatismore, it is thethirddaysinceauthis tookplace” (Luke 24:21). The disciples in this example “missed” God’s timing.Although the actual amount of elapsed time was minimal, in terms of God’seternal purposes, theymissedGod’s timing by a “mile.”They had adistortedviewofGod’stiming.

This traveler (Jesus), with whom the disciples spoke, was the veryfulfillmentofthatstatementtheyhadjustmade. The

DrawingPrematureConclusionsThisnexthindrancetoreceivingprophecyalsodealswithtiming,butina

different area. Sometimes we draw premature (human) conclusions about theprophecy. Doing so can prove to be spiritually dangerous since prematureconclusions can lead to discouragement and despair. Ultimately, drawingpremature conclusions about prophecy could lead to a “hardened” heart orattitude toward the Lord Himself. That is otherwise known as a “root ofbitterness.”Why?WemistakenlyblameGodforpropheciesthatfailto“cometopass”(befulfilled)aswethink(withhumanreasoning)theyshould.

InstarkcontrasttoourwayofthinkingaboutanythingrelatingtoGod,theScriptures declare this: “‘For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither areyourwaysMyways,’ declares the Lord. ‘As the heavens are higher than theearth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than yourthoughts’”(Is.55:8,9).Romans11:33says,“Oh, thedepthof therichesof thewisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable His judgments, and Hispathsbeyondtracingout!”

Finite man will never fully understand an infinite and omniscient God.

Page 56: You can all prophesy : a balanced approach to giving and receiving personal prophecy

Similarly, we will not always be able to fully understand all prophecy at alltimessince theScriptures tellus that“weknowinpart..” (1Cor.13:9).Whenwe do not recognize this limitation in ourselves, we tend to draw prematureconclusions about our prophecies. Remember that “His paths [are] beyondtracingout.”Whenweseethisverseasadivinerestrictionandrecognizeitasbeing for our own good, we will, hopefully, cease from drawing too manyconclusionstoosooninourprophecies.

Let me give you an example from my own life. This list of spiritual conditions finds its origin in Scripture. The list ofspiritual symptoms, however, is highly subjective. Consequently, it representsthe author’s interpretation based on both Scripture and personal observation.Again,theseconditionsarelistedintheorderoftheirseverity.

e.Blindedeyes,andf.Carnalmind.ChapterFiveTheSecrettoPowerinProphecyGenuine humility is a rare thing. Once we recognize it in our lives, we

could lose it if we are not careful. Nevertheless, we need to examine someguidelines of humility in order to keep it as a balancing force in our lives asbelievers. The secret to real power in the Holy Spirit is humility, or “lowmindedness”astheKingJamesVersiontranslatesit.

TheScriptures tellus to“clothe [ourselves]withhumility...” (1Pet.5:5).Thatmeanswe are responsible for“putting iton”ourselves.Letusexamineafewfactsthatshowuswhathumilityisbyshowinguswhathumilityisnot.

Humilityisnotsomethingwithwhichyouwereborn.Itisnotapersonalitytrait innate in all human beings. True humility is something you developprogressively throughout your Christian life. It is not something you achieveonce and for all, but is something that keepsgrowing in you.Humility isnothow others view you externally; rather, humility is how you look at yourselfinternally. More accurately, humility is a spiritual condition of the heart. Tohavepower inyour life arid to cooperate in thegift of prophecy, youneed to“puton”(beclothedwith)genuinehumility.

Thebasisforgenuinehumilityissimple.EverythingweareandeverythingwehavecomesfromGod.“Everygoodandperfectgiftisfromabove,comingdownfromtheFatheroftheheavenlylights...”(James1:17).Howthencanwetake“credit” foranything thatGodhasdone inour lives?Weasbelieversaremerelythe“earthenvessels”whileHeisthemostpreciousoilthatfillsus.Thetruevalueofan“earthenvessel”wasalwaysinitscontentsandnotinthevesselitself.Thevesselwasusefulonlyasacontainerofthatpreciousoil.

One night, while in prayer, the importance of practicing humility wasrevealed tome personally by the Lord. I “saw” that there were at least threethingsinGodyouneverwantto“touch.”Inthiscontext, theterm“touch”means“to embrace excessively” either physically, mentally or spiritually. First, younever“touch” (covet) anotherman’shouse, wife, possessions, etc. or anythingthatbelongstoyourneighbor(Ex.20:17).Second,Iwastoldtonevertouch“theunfruitful works of darkness” (Eph. 5:11 KJV). Third, and most importantly,GodtoldmethatnightinprayerthatIshouldnevertouchthe“glory”(splendor, majesty, praise, worship, adoration, exaltation,)duetheLord!

As long as a believer stays in the “safe” zone, in terms of hishumility,Godwillleavehimalone.Ifhemovesintothe“red”zone, intermsofhis lack of humility, then God willwarn (not kill!) him.. I believe God hasshownme a fewways to stay in this “safe” zone. If humility is the secret topowerinprophecy, thenweneedtofollowtheseguidelines:

Ifwewant to be “used ofGod” and operate in the gift of prophecy, weneed tohave a realistic viewofourselves.Weneed tounderstand thatwe arecreatures of pride and must be on our guard constantly. I believe it takes ahumble attitude to be “used of God” in prophecy. The best way to humbleyourselfistonottakeyourselftooseriously.

Our second point is: do not let people worship you. This problem hasalways been a deadly tendency in the Church. Our “flesh” gravitates towardexalting man and toward worshiping idols. History tells us that “it is in ourblood.” Unfortunately, one of the most popular idols we have today in the

Church is ourselves! We have a tendency in the Church to idolize men andwomenbasedontheirindividualgifts.

We achieve“brokenness” by giving God permission to establish it in our lives!Wemustdesire forGod todevelopuspropheticallyHisway, inHis time, andwithourcooperation. This “fine tuning” of our prophetic gifting will usually involve“brokenness.” Genuine humility (brokenness) is not found on the spiritual“mountain tops” aswemistakenly imagine. reigns supreme in thosewho participate in its practices. It is unbrokenness or“unsurrendered”power that isat therootof thesinofalloccultpracticesandactivities. It is this “Unsurrendered” power that attempts to circumvent Godinsteadof“goingthrough”(submittingto)God.

In Luke 4:4-13, the devil even tempted Jesus Christ to operate inunsurrendered power. In different ways, but with the same intent, the devilsuggested three times thatunsurrenderedpower be exercised by Jesus outsidethewillofHisFatherThedevilwas trying tocause JesusChrist tooperate inoccult-like behavior! Jesus saw through this scheme and quotedGod’sWord, and He refused to yield to any opportunity to exercise unsurrendered power.Onceagain,JesusisourgreatestexampleofsubmittingourspiritualgiftstotheFather in perfect and total surrendered spiritual power. ChapterSixCautionsRelatedtoProphecyA caution is “a forethought to avoid danger or harm.” Therefore,

(prophetic) cautions as they relate to this material are best defined as “forethoughtstoavoiddangerorharmwhileoperatinginprophecy.”

Thepurposeofthisbookhasbeentohelpeverybelieveroperateinthegiftofprophecyfreelyandwithoutunduerestrictions.Ihavepresentedvariousstep-by-step formulas that have been proven, through experience, to actually“produce”prophecy in anySpirit-filledbelieverwhodesires it. I have tried totakeprophecyfromthehandsofjustafewandputitintothehandsofmanyintheBodyofChrist.

The Scriptures say, “...wisdom is proved right by her actions” (Matt.11:19). It generally means that if a truth is producing scriptural results, itswisdom (its application in our lives) is justified. ThankGod thatwe can helpothers operate in this gift, just aswewere helped. Thiswisdom thatGod hasgivenushasproven tobe rightby theactions itproduced in thesebelievers. That means we do notdecide who gets what gift; He does. BetterSafeThanSorrySecond is another cautionwhich is best described by the phrase,“Better

Ifbelievers(or your spiritual leaders) are not regularly confirming your prophecies, thentake it as a possiblewarning.Youmay be “slipping” into some error in yourprophecies. It is not the end of the world for you, but it is a warningnevertheless. Generally speaking, there should always be a certain amount ofpositive response to your prophecies. Most of the time you should not be“surprising”people inanegativewaywithyourprophecies.Rather, rememberthat a prophecy’smain purpose is to “strengthen, encourage and comfort,” tobringhealingandhopetothebeliever.

Goddoes notwant you to hastily “blurt out” just anything and label it aprophecy. That issometimes thecasewithover-anxiousbeginners.Godwouldhave you strive for quality rather than for quantity in your prophecies. Do not be impatient to mature in the area of prophecy. God has apersonalized training coursewhichwe allmust go through. Trying to “skip aclass” or two will only increase the likelihood of errors. Do not try to rushthrough thesevital lessons thatGodhasordained foryou.Beingpropheticallyconservative does notmean you are “quenching the Spirit.” Itmeans you arelearningtheproperrestraintsthatmaykeepyououtoftroublelater.Remember,

from time to time. It seems very fewbelievers todaywant to be considered a“specialist.”Websterdefinesaspecialistas“onewhohasdevotedhimself toaparticular branch of study or research.” To elaborate, we are referring to a“specialist”asonewhoseekstodevelopandculturethegiftofprophecy.Often,wewanttobea“sloppyJoe”andstillfunctionbeyondourmeasureoffaithandeffectiveness.Paulsaid,“We,however,willnotboastbeyondproperlimits,butwillconfineourboastingtothefieldGodhasassignedtous...”(2Cor.10:13).

God is calling prophetic “specialists” today. He does not need 10,000“general practitioners’ clumsily operating in prophecy. The Church has seenenoughof these “gardenvariety”propheciesdeliveredby thosewellmeaning, butgenerally ineffectivebelievers.Hedesiresan“army”of first-rateprophetic“specialists” who deliver “first-rate” prophecies.
