Welcome to the 2011 edition of the Harvest Hoedown. It is with great enthusiasm I write these Sales Manager comments. As we move through the year we have faced many struggles and adversities. The spring of 2011 was one of many challenges for many producers, but as history has shown us before, the sun will shine again and better times will prevail. As we move into the last quarter of 2011, things are looking good. The flooded land is drying up, cattle prices are moving forward at a wonderful pace giving producers the boost they have waited for, for years, and the grain sector is doing very well.

As I toured the wonderful province of Manitoba this summer I not only saw some beautiful country that I didn’t know existed, but found a great set of sale cattle in the process. This year’s offering comes from many of the same seed stock producers as well as some new ones. We have an excellent set of bred heifers from Northern Light Simmentals. As usual Neil and Denise have assembled a fantastic set of top cut bred heifers for your appraisal. Schweitzer Simmentals have also dug deep into their replacement pen to offer their top cut as well. Cam and Myrna love the cattle business and once again will be very proud to offer these heifers. Black Diamond Simmentals is new to this year’s sale, but will quickly find a place with the set of females they will be bringing to town. Bruce Robinson and family are certainly not new to the Simmental busi-ness and will be bringing a set of stout youthful heifers from the heart of the replacement pen. A very nice set of heifers will be offered as well from Blair Workman and Son. Calvin is a very dedicated young breeder to the Simmental world and loves the cattle business. He will bringing his best to Neepewa as well. Pure Country Simmentals, Richard Bramley, is another young breeder selecting some of his top heifers for auction as well.

A little bit of a twist this year will be a cow dispersal from the Homestead Simmental program. Perry and Michelle Thesen have decided that the work load is getting a little much with work and a young family and have decided to reduce the cow herd down for a few years. This is an oppor-tunity to select from their program with a nice group of young attractive females as well.

We operate a mixed farm located 6 miles south east of Carrot River, SK consisting of 2500 acres of grain land and 30 cows. Perry also owns a very busy plumbing and heating business that keeps him away from home most of the time when he’s not farming. I am relatively new to the Purebred industry but being a rancher’s daughter, I have been around cattle all of my life and developed a passion for them at a very young age – namely Simmental cattle. It has been a continual learning curve but the one thing that remains the same for both commercial and purebred cows is the good ones you keep and the ones that aren’t gonna do the job you don’t. I can guarantee my cows will do the job. My herd is at a point where it could expand quickly but due to the demands of a young family I have decided it is necessary to “sit back” for awhile. I will be retaining the 2011 heifer calves so as to have something to build back off of in the future. You will notice my cows are off of some of the industry’s leading AI sires including Good A Nuff, Bodybuilder, Red Label and Anchor “T” Rusty. I have relied heavily on AI but am also pleased with females I have kept off of a Dayton’s Pol Neumann son we purchased from Gist Simmentals.

The cows are bred to calve February/March. Because of the condition of our facilities due to excess moisture this spring I did not even attempt to AI cows. In saying that, I am confident in a Rochfort son that I purchased from Crossroad Farms and feel he will complement the cows well. He caught my attention right away and continues to mature into a type of bull I look for. He is a moderate framed, long-bodied, wide topped, thick, calv-ing ease, red bull with a pleasant disposition.

The bull calves have all been sold off of the farm and for the past 3 years I have brought a few select females to the Shades of the Prairies Sale in Brandon.
