HAPPY NEW YEAR!
2020 in the Chinese calendar is the Year of the Rat. The Rat is the first
sign from the 12 animals cycle of Chinese Astrology and is considered a
year of new beginnings and renewals! This seems appropriate for me
as I have been asked to take over publication of the YKI Newsletter. I
am honored to take on this responsibility to support our organization
and associated dojos. To do this job effectively, I am going to need
your help! Any articles, spotlights, or other notices you would like
published in an upcoming issue, please email to me at
Our association will be offering a number of training opportunities in
the coming months. Please be active and take advantage of these
opportunities to expand your knowledge of Yoshukai Karate. For those
of you that attend, please take pictures and send to me either by email
or Facebook so that I can include them in the next issue!
Keep Training!

The Yoshukai Karate International Tournament Circuit and award recognition was created to reward those karateka in our association who take the time to represent the YKI at open and invitational tournaments. While “sport” karate is not the primary focus of Yoshukai training we cannot deny that Hanshi Mike Foster’s tournament success in the USKA tournament circuit and Florida state championships helped to quickly spread the name of Yoshukai in the United States. Ever since those early days of Mr. Foster, Yoshukai has consistently produced tournament medalist and champions in all divisions. Our style has come to be known for its fighting spirit and competitive performances. Tournaments, for Kyu grades are a great opportunity to test skills against other karateka from different styles, create lasting friendships, and develop a love and pride in the art of Yoshukai! For us Black Belts, tournaments allow us to hone our technique, share our knowledge, continue building relationships with other Dan grades, and represent our style both as competitors and judges. There are many opportunities to participate throughout the year. Even if you do not wish to compete, please support those that do!
Yoshukai Internal Tournament Circuit Rules
If you compete in a tournament you will receive one (1) point. If you place, the following additional points will be awarded: 1st place = 3 points, 2nd place = 2 points, and 3rd place = 1 point. Recognized
categories of competition include: Kata (traditional only, no musical), Kumite (fighting), Kobudo (weapons). A legitimate tournament is any tournament that is recognized by the local karate community. Points will be collected for tournaments held after Tai Kai until July the following year. Please submit all tournament results (by email) to [email protected]. Any student not sending in their results will
not have their points recorded!

The Monster Walk Main Muscle: Abductors
1. Place a band around both ankles and another around both knees. There should be enough tension that they are tight when your feet are shoulder width apart.
2. Alternatively, you can use a rubber exercise band with handles. Hold a handle in each hand and step onto the band (both feet – shoulder width apart). When you move your feet, the band provides resistance.
3. To begin, take short steps forward alternating your left and right foot. After several steps, do just the opposite and walk backward to where
you started.
