Airport’s firelifeline placedon cuts hit-listA FiRE station which isfirst to respond to incidentsat Leeds Bradford inter-national Airport is facingclosure because of Govern-ment cuts.
Rawdon fire station and a part-time station at Otley will close withthe loss of 23 jobs under proposalsto West Yorkshire Fire Authority.A new station is planned at Men-ston to replace the two.
Rawdon turns out automaticallyin the event of any incident at theaiport to back up the airport’s ownfirefighters.
A fire service source at Rawdonsaid: “We are the first there. We at-tend whenever there is an alarmthere for whatever reason - say ifan under-carriage wheel does notcome down.”
Rawdon is a full-time fire sta-
tion staffed 24 hours a day.Otley has retained firefighters
who are on call at home or fromother jobs.
A spokesman for West YorkshireFire service said the proposals willgo to the authority on December 16after public consultations end onDecember 9. He said constructionof a new station in Menston wouldimprove call-out times to Burley-in-Wharfedale and Otley, and main-tain call-out times to Rawdon.
He said Rawdon and Otley wereboth classed as “very low risk ar-eas.”
Ten of West Yorkshire’s 48 firestations face closure due to Govern-ment cuts. They will be replaced by
five new ones, but the fire authori-ty has accepted there will be longerjourney times to some incidents.
Other closures include Giptonand stanks in east Leeds, Dews-bury and Batley, and Hemsworthand south Emsall.
The number of West Yorkshirefirefighters is expected to be cutfrom 1,450 to 1,150 by 2015, and theservice will lose a number of appli-ances.
The Fire Brigades union (FBu)says the closures will mean in-creased risk to lives and homes, businesses and workplaces.
Yorkshire FBu Regional secre-tary Pete smith said: “There willbe a greater risk to life, to homes, businesses and workplaces. We’llhave fewer stations, fewer frontlinecrews and fewer appliances spreadmore thinly.
“These cuts are the worst wehave ever seen and come on theback of already serious cuts to theservice in recent years. Make nomistake they are a threat to thesafety of the public and firefight-ers.”
