This is a milestone year for the York County Choral Society. We are proudly marking our tenth year thisseason. Printed elsewhere in this program are congratulatory letters from leaders in our county marking thisoccasion. ,The YCCS was organized with good faith and much uncertainty. No one knew how many people would
present themselves to prepare for the very first concert. Also no one knew how many listeners would attend thefirst performance. As the years have passed, the group has stabilized into a strong nucleus of like-mindedvolunteers who enjoy preparing and presenting choral works by the masters of all time, from the Renaissance tothe Romantic and modern eras. We have worked hard to provide high-quality programs for our audiences. And we have been rewarded many times over by your enthusiastic support, both in your monetary
contributions and in your attendance at concerts. Without you, YCCS would have no reason to exist, and ourpride on our 10th season is no greater than our gratitude to you for coming this far with us.We will round out this 10th anniversary year on April 20, 1991, at Byrnes Auditorium on the Winthrop
College campus. At that time we will join forces with the Raleigh Choral Society for an all-Mozart concert, commemorating the 200th. anniversary of his death. Featured on that concert will be the Grand Mass in Cminor, the Piano Concerto in E-flat Major and Ave verum corpus. With this 10th Anniversary season, Christmas at McCelvey is a new venture and may well become an annual
event. Combining forces with a distant choral society is also a new venture, one which may open newopportunities for you, our audience. With your support, we will continue to bring to you new ideas in providingchoral masterworks for our entire county and surrounding areas. ~~ ~My very best wishes to you, and thanks again for your support. .

•...•..•._.....••.•COUNTY CHORAL SOCIETY - THE TENTH SEASON!ociety is to prepare and perform choral masterworks with appropriateing the ever-growing populace of northern South Carolina and the Charlotteoutlet for artistic creativity and adding to the greater community a wealth of
andfor its people.thful. When we were being coaxed into the idea of founding the York County Choralse statement seemed only a good idea. It wasn't until the first rehearsal, when some 120
t to rehearse the last two parts of Handel's Messiah that it seemed like it was possible. When it0i);~:S that the conductor meant business on singing the right notes in time and with good sound, a more
ns::;r-l:::::l group of 85 or so produced a remarkable result. It was only a year later, on the School of Music's......_.......•......,Festival, that our performance of Brahms' A German Requiem was broadcast on public radio more than
_And we were off running. All nine seasons previous to this one have been exciting in many ways. Never has a fiscal year finished up in
the red. We can't offer thanks enough to the loyal and generous support of a large family of financial patronmembers. We have been able to plan carefully without severe restrictions .. or at least our eyes haven't gottenbigger than our pocketbooks. There is no other chorus in YorkCounty committed to the same purpose we have, and we're happy to fill the vacuum. It seems the appropriate time for us to say thanks to several important people who are often overlooked. The first group is, of course, the choruses that have sung each year. A chorus makes the sound of the people
who sing. We can mold and hone sounds, but each season's chorus is as different as the people in it. Everychorus has worked diligently and learned much. No conductor or rehearsal coach can do it alone. It takes thesinger's enthusiasm and commitment to make it work. The second group is made up of those who have served on the boards. Each board has learned much about
what a young choral society and its board must do. In recent seasons, we have found our way off the board, allowing it to plan for the perpetuation of the society. We won't be around forever. The third group contains many members of the Charlotte Symphony who have continuously been
enthusiastic about playing for the YCCS; the staffs at Oakland Baptist Church, where we have beencontinuously welcome to rehearse; and the Music Department at Winthrop College which maintainsenthusiastic support. Finally, the audiences, the most obvious recipients of our efforts. Upon reflection, we fmd we've had a wider
audience than one might suspect. It now covers a large geographical portion of the county. It has included thecosmopolitan audience of a Piccolo Spoleto, of a cathedral congregation, of some individual churchcongregations, and of two professional musicians' conventions.
It's been a great ten seasons. Let's look forward to the next century with renewed commitment and, above all, good music.
