STORY OF DISSOLUTION

"Dear Rama,"

Once I was sitting in Bramhalok besides Bramhaaji. It was midday. I saw a

scorching sunbeam suddenly arise in the west -- great light effulgent. Second sun

in the west, then two more, three more from north and south. In minutes, twelvedevastating suns arose. Then as three eyes of dissolution, sun, ocean fire and

ligthening combined together began to burn all the world. Directions became red.

Sound of burning was heard all around. Ocean water dried. Mountain's ice melted

into water and evaporated. Mountains began to burn, flames and sparks of fire

slipped into subterranean and that too burned up. Like pious one's heart in the

company of wicked and unwise.

When fire reached to Mount Kailash Lord Shiva looked through his third

eye, great fire arose -- mountains began burning and flying all blackened in the sky.

Then forty-nine clouds began to shower. As ignorant's heart cools down by thecompany of the wise all world became cool and soothed. Then water level arose in

which all burned mountain pieces began to dance on the waves. Water level rose to

all planets, to Svah, to Mahah, Janah, Tapah, Satyam and Bramhalok. I glanced all

around and found all ministers along with Bramhaaji have merged into deep

meditation. Deeply absorbed they were in samadhi like stone statues. All twelve

suns, forty-nine airs and clouds, and scriptures, all were meditating with their eyes

closed. Then suddenly suns disappeared. As after dream, in waking state dreams

disappear so all of them too just became invisible. Right in front of my eyes

Bramhalok became empty, deserted and began burning. Bramhaaji sat in deepmeditation and lo, he just became evaporated. And water below took it all among

its waves.

Then I saw a huge blue sapphirish person shining effulgently appear from

the top. He had five faces, ten arms, three eyes with trident in hand. Through his

breath he was bringing tides and ebbs in the water. He was Mahasiva. I offered

my obeisances to him.

"Holy Sire, explain to me the form of Mahasiva?"

"Dear Rama,"

Individual ego is poison. That is abandonable. But Cosmic ego is acceptable likenectar. Experiencing the whole Bramhand as yourself is Cosmic ego. Mahasiva is

the embodiment of this. Sky is his nature. Because of being eternal he is blue. All

the souls who have been liberated transcending their ego, accepting the condensed

form of that, he has appeared so he was fierceful and dark. He was submergence

of five senses of perceptions so he had five faces. His ten arms represented

submergence of senses of action. Mode of peace, work and sleep -- the three

gunas were his three eyes in one face. Past, present and future were next set of

three eyes in second face. Rik, Yajuh and Sam Vedas were three eyes in fourth

face. AUM resonance of pranav mantra were three eyes in his fifth face. Sky washis form. Three planets his trident. From Bramha the pure consciousness he was

vibrated so he was dispatched by him and will get merged later on.

As if he had wings of sky. When he inhaled all waters began entering in him

through his noses and mouths as rivers enter in the ocean. Just in twenty-four

minutes he drank up all cosmic waters of the universe. As darkness by sunrise,

ignorance of foolish by company of wisemen sucks up, same way he drank up all

waters. Then only sky shone as bright pearl.

"Dear Sir, what exists above this Bramhand?"

There is sky, Rama, ten times, then air, fire, earth ten times more than the

former.

"Upon whom or which do they stay?"

"Dear Rama,"

These elements lay upon the earth. As child comes and sits on the lap of mother, same way these elements are laid upon the earth which serves as outer edge of the

Bramhand.

"What is the basis of the Bramhand upon which shelter it stays on?"

Upon what shelter these clouds float? Upon what basis the sun, moon,

planets and stars move on their orbit? Rama, as the world of dream is sheltered

by your will, same way these planets and the Bramhand too are sheltered by mighty

will arisen from Bramha. As desire vanishes so Bramhand dissolves. As sunrays

seem to be carrying water, blueness seems to have painted the sky, pearls seem tohave scattered in the sky, likewise, worlds, universes and Bramhand appear in the

atma in the Self. As there is no count of sand and rays of sun, same way there is

no count of Bramhandas. But still in reality they have never happened. Only

vasanas, your passions are playing upon one another. Therefore Rama, drop out.....

"Holy Sire, what did Mahasiva do? Was he alone?"

He had a shadow -- huge, blue sparkling brilliantly as if made of lightening.

And she was dancing. She had three eyes, large eighteen arms with divine weapons. She appeared at times as she had two hands, then one thousand, then millions, then

only one. Then no hand at all. No head, no feet, just trunk dancing. In her gait of

dance she covered the entire sky. There was no boundary of her tip and toe. Patal

was her feet, past Bramhalok her head. Lokalok her lips, wearing garlands of

planets and rivers, exhaling breath of hurricane in which great mountains were

flying all over, water was spilling, wearing anklets of universes. And she was

dancing. Her ears had two large earrings of dharma and adharma. Four ambitions

were her breasts. Milk of the Vedas and sastras were dripping through her

nipples. Entire Bramhand, mountains, rivers and planets shook and danced with hergait. Her nails were like moons. As mosquitoes fly by wind innumerable worlds flew

from her form.

As ocean feels all waves as its own form, she feels all universes as her own

form. The hairs of Lord Shiva were like peacock feathers and hers were like dark

blue shining silk. And they were dancing. In a moment she would become thumb

size, in a moment huge, cosmic. All actions that happen in the world reflect in the

form of Divine Mother like mirror reflecting the panoramic view. They were

dancing.

"Holy Sire, Mahasiva and Divine Mother and their dance is very strange. In

final dissolution nothing at all remains. How did you see creation in their bodies?

After dissolution how worlds reflected in their bodies? How she reduced and

increased?"

"Dear Rama,"

Chidakasa atmatatva is Mahasiva. Display of atma chitsakti is Divine Mother.

They are like air and vibration -- consciousness and passion. Then in the seat of

chidakasa consciousness plus passion becomes triple object of passion, passion and

towards which it is addressed. Enveloped by these awarenesses becomes soul.

Mahatatva, five elements and ego. These are seven prakriti-vikriti: (causeand effect) the work of the Devi and the very cause of five senses of perception

and five senses of action, five vital airs and one mind. These sixteen are vikritis.

The seventeenth is the nondual Bramha-consciousness.

The first ripple in Bramha which arises is Chandika-Jayanti, Durga, Gayatri,

Savitri, Kumari, Gouri, Shiva, Vijaya, Susakti and Indrasara. Her form is AUM.

Her dance means vast, intensive activities that are going on throughout the

existence of creation. Her dance is either satvic, rajasic or tamasic. Her limbs

are planets. When separated and distanced from atma the Mahashiva her form is

enlarged. When she comes closer she is reduced. As waves are limbs of sea, spaceis of sky, world is limbs of hers.

Every atma is Shiva, every ripple of vibration of I am-ness is Devi. And

entire life is their wild dance. Dear Rama, when Devi's dance ceased Shiva alone

remained. Then he absorbed the Bramhand in himself and stayed alone as mountain

of solid rock.

Then he reduced himself into a subtlest atom. Then he disappeared. I kept

watching all this with divine eyes remaining subtle and invisible. Then I saw the

vasana Devi of Bramhaaji and Kali shakti and the gold rock. Then I assumed this

must be the storehouse of all creations. Then exactly that happened. I sawtrillions of universes in that rock of gold. I entered in the rock -- I only saw

numbers and numbers and numbers of creation.

Somewhere Bramha has just born and he is figuring out for creation.

Somewhere ocean churning is going on and one by one fourteen gems are coming

out. Somewhere people are staying alive for entire kalpa. There is no old-age nor

disease. Somewhere demons and celestials are fighting. Somewhere there is

Golden Age, somewhere Silver Age, somewhere Copper Age, somewhere Iron Age.

Somewhere Rama and Ravana are fighting. Somewhere Kauravas and Pandavas are

fighting. Somewhere Rasa dance is going on. Somewhere in the leaf of aksaybat indissolution water a baby God is lying with his toe in his lips. All these creations

were reflecting upon my atma as a cosmic mirror. When I see through atma vision

I see only chidakasa and with sankalpa (will) vision I saw nothing but worlds.

"Holy Sire, have I born before too as I am now or I was different than

now?"

forgot my previous atmic status. And body and senses felt like attached to me.

Then projecting my I upon the combination of a bunch of them I pronounced AUM

loud and profound and resounding Pranav or omkar is beyond beginning, present

and the end. It is the ocean of waves of innumerable universes. Rama, as in rays of

the sun river of desert shimmers up, same way the world shimmered to me. As thisriver of desert in sunrays is false, same way perception and identification too are

false. Then thinking of sensation too is false. Then obsession of passion born of it

too is false. Then visualizations of forms made by combinations of them too is

false. Then this world, its glamor, its noise, its ecstasies and beauties too are

false, as some old told tale, fantasy island or hallucination of some kind. Then it

appears to be made only in the luxurious fabrication of desiring mind and its

projections.

I then felt earth is my body.

Upon me all forests, mountains, rivers, oceans, trees, fruit, flowers, men, birds, gods, sages, demons, serpents, are inhabited. Just as little tiny hairs of body and

ants crawling through them that is how humans looked. Birds and airplanes

appeared like mosquitoes. Somewhere farmers are ploughing upon me, sowing seeds

in me. harvests growing, perfuming, wheat rises yellowing, people on my body eating

and surviving. Somewhere digging on me, somewhere worshipping me. Somewhere

reign of peace and prosperity, somewhere great nuclear war. All just to own a tiny

piece of me just for a few moments. Somewhere people are crying, after sometime

they are laughing, as Germany and Japan during and after world wars. Some part

of me clad with snow the ants call it ice age. Then dinosaur stalls for a fewminutes, then many civilizations come and go like rose perfume or skunk odor.

People in efforts of owning my tiny piece change the history of the land, then

future generation ants discover something. This changes the entire perspective

and they say, "Wow!" for a long time. Desiringness is called mind. Reflection is

called will (sankalpa). Wherever there is existence of object, scene, person, place

and time are vibrations of Bramha. And wherever there is Bramha world is there,

Thus I saw innumerable Bramhandas.

When I became earth of trillions of universes of trillions of Bramhandas, I

thought of water, and began to flow in rivers and canals. I entered as juice intrees, plants and grass. And becoming leaves, flowers and fruits I surrounded

them and hung on them. I became strength and straightness in trunks and pillars.

I started flowing in streams of rivers toward the ocean creating of myself sweet

sounds of waterfalls. I laid in relaxation and luxury spreading myself in waves, in

waters of Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Becoming dew I hung on leaves, becoming

clouds I thundered and showered in different parts of the world. Carrying in me,

giving rides to innumerable souls from heavenly planets whose punyas have run out,

I sheltered them into crops and harvests and minerals, all over the world. People

ate, and me again it is, to flow in them as blood, juice, mucus, sweat, urine, semen

etc. I became all waters of the world. I dwell as taste on tongue tips of

everybody. I live in Himalayas as snow shining on tops of hills. Dear Rama, on bedof flowers I kept resting for a long time. As perfume I blew, as clouds I floated in

sky, as water I showered on hilltops and began flowing all over bringing joy to all

beings.

I BECAME FIRE

As soon as I thought of being different I became light and began shining in

the forms of moon, sun and fire. I became garland of stars. Being sun I would

drink waters of the world and illuminate the world. Moon and sun are two boxesfrom which pearls of day and night always keep coming out and scatter around. I

became sun for the lotuses of satvic, rajasic, tamasic actions and continued

satisfying manes and celestials. I became light in gems, pearls, gold and fire of

yajna. I entered in vital air and became digestive fire. I entered in ocean and

became badavajni. Seeing, visualizing, third eyes are lit and function by my light

and energy. Luster in kings, power in yogis come from me. I began to nourish the

world through becoming energy and electricity. I became anger in angry people,

passion in passionate people, enthusiasm in brame people and desperation to

meditate in spiritual people."Holy Sire, when you became different things of nature and began to

experience the joys of elements, did you also suffer their calamities?"

"Dear Rama,"

One who remembers and stays established in predream and post dream awareness

even while dreaming a dream, whether joyous or nightmarish, one does not suffer

but always enjoys. Because of this it is known as antavahak deha. One who has

this kind of suffering proof body can enter stone, air, water, fire and earth yet his

joy will not be disturbed. Nothing can obstruct him because all is his body. If

someone creates ocean of fire by his imagination and takes a bath in it then do youthink he will get burned? No, unless he is hypnotized. But being in antavahak deha

is an ultimate dehypnosis of all conditionings of identification wise hypnotized

state of mind in which all people move and live and interact. All are felt as within

one's desiring. Whole Bramhand, the universe appears as his own body. Dreamer

sees rivers, mountains and fire in dream and along with them he also assumes one

Page 8: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

form. And watches all but becomes entangled. He forgets his former form due to

conditionings and burns with burning embers of attachments and aversions.

I saw myself as inert matter, bodies as well as alert conscious reality. Thus

all remain to me as my very form. Cosmic Virat form of mine is colossal. In it, how

can there be misery?Misery happens only when you forget your true Self.

My true Self remaining true Self even while seeing hills, trees, markets,

body, senses, mind, ego and everything outside which is part of inert dimension of

reality. This dimension is only just gross material experience, perceptional. By

dullness of sleep, infused inactivity, nonexistent unreality appears existent. It is

through attachment and hatred you see these in you. You go possessed, obsessed,

but I was free. I know I have assumed all these forms by my own choice and see

them as reflection in the mirror. I saw myself willingly turning into inert,

unconscious substance and also superconscious, luminous great being. I neverforgot my tatva, my originality. I watch all as my limbs staying as cosmic. How can

misery grip me anyway? I saw them as you see events in television, in mirrors, as

foregone tales told in the past. The darkness, the evil, the sin too manipulated

energy and light and consciousness from me. I became fire from which came black

smoke, even the kajal.

THEN I BECAME AIR

Then slowly I turned into air. I began to blow mildly, gently and gloriously. Ibegan to shake the trees and their flowers, waters on ponds and their lotuses.

Planets and stars began rotating by my fondle. Waves of rivers and oceans rose

high with my push. I entered in bodies as prana, apana, udana, samana and vyana

spreading throughout all the nerves. I carried their shares of juice in their parts.

Shaking, waving, talking, taking, giving, all happened by me. I was cloud to the

raindrops of activity. Sky was my home. Directions fluctuated from me. I pleased

gods through perfumes, directions emanated from me. Flame burned through me.

In birds, in their wings I played. I dried all. Inside and out these five elements I

became. As all dream objects are one's own form, same way, inside and outside ofall beings and all objects I became.

I saw each being's bones, blood, marrow; traveled through their intestines,

brain, muscles and also outside how they behave. I felt if only outer skin is

removed all people's walking and behaving will look like ghosts. Disgusting and

horrifying figures, just skin makes so much difference. Just a slight difference in

flesh arrangements and one is called lady and another, gents, and so much

Page 9: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

fascination is projected upon her. So many complex conceptions of beauty and

popularity. I was shocked but soon I continued to blow naturally functioning to

keep harmony in all and never to make things worse. In fact I realized as the world

of dreaming state is nothing else but clean sky, same way, these bodies and forms

too are just pure, clean sky. Only passion and desire are making one feel likewonderful, glamorous world. In all these forms only atma is established in himself,

the rest is illusion of fantasy island. Thus Rama, I saw the whole world in myself.

Almost like mini Bramha, abstract and unmanifest, moved everywhere, all over.

When and when I saw through my bramhic eye I saw none else but Bramha.

When I saw through antavahak sight I saw as a tiniest sandal particle carries

great fragrance, same way, every atom has vast creation inside. As man sleeps,

enters in a dream. Then sleeps and enters in another dream. Tired he sleeps again

in the night and enters in another dream.

Each dream has creation. Of all these creations original waking is the basis,

likewise, Bramha is the basis of all our series of dreamings. Realizing is to stop the

flow. Then peace is born and this peace is an eternity of all the great

achievements of life.

BACK TO THE COTTAGE

"Dear Rama,"

Seeing this entire show at last I retreated. I withdrew my will, my sankalpa, mydesires and I then moved towards my cottage. When I looked it was the same

shining mansion surrounded by greening lawns, woods and groves. When I entered

the door I saw another yogi had arrived and sitting in meditation he had entered

deep trance of Nirvikalpa samadhi. "Who is he, where is my body? Perhaps

thinking I am dead he may have thrown it away. And he is established in deep

meditation." His face was shining. His peace was spreading. "Oh, that is okay, let

him stay here and I can go now to my Star." I decided and moved further outside.

As soon as desire and belongingness for my cottage was removed from my

consciousness the garden along with cottage suddenly disappeared as if they neverwere there. And the yogi fell down towards earth. Like a drop of water when

released from cloud never stops but goes on falling downward, yogi was falling

towards the earth. I became concerned. Worried for his safety I also hurried

towards the earth. When I reached the planet Earth I found him safe and unhurt.

I looked at him. He was in the same posture as he was in my cottage before the

fall. Due to depth in meditation the weight of his body had considerably

Page 10: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

disappeared and therefore when he fell it was like a flower fell on the ground. His

meditation was so deep that such a dangerous fall did not disturb him at all. He

fell seated in triangular posture as he was before.

I felt interested to speak to him, so I became a cloud and thundered aloud

but he did not awake. Then I showered rain, still he kept on meditating. I thenmade heavy rain. Still he remained absorbed. Then I flashed lightening as if

mountains broke and still he continued entranced. Then I became a snowfall and

becoming an ice cube I fell on certain nerve of his susumna in the spine. Then he

opened his eyes and began looking all around as a peacock looks to the cloud on the

hilltop. His soul then spread on to prana and senses. Then I appeared in human

form right in his front. Then he abandoned nondual feeling and spoke, "Hello Sire,

how are you? In fact, who are you? Welcome in my cottage. What service can I

do for you?"

"Indeed, it is me to ask you the same question, Sir?" Then he feltconcerned, "Let me recollect, Sire, I will then answer you." And he closed his eyes

and asked his Atma. In a few minutes, opened them, and said--

"Reverend Sage Vasistha the great, you came to me. Please forgive me for

occupying your cottage. I offended you. I offer my obeisances to you."

"Please be comfortable. Everything is all right. See the cottage

disappeared and your body fell from sky. Tell me your autobiography?" Vasistha

asked.

"Holy Sire," he continued. "World is a river. Its stream is very great. It

never dries. From the ocean of mind this stream originates. Birth and death areits two banks. Attachment and aversion are its waves. Passionate clinging to

sensational objects are whirlpools. I suffered in them a lot. I enjoyed innumerable

pleasures. I went to spiritual centers too but I never found peace. As papiha

longing for drops from clouds never gets peace in the hot desert, same way, no joy

came to me from sensual gratifications.

"Then I wondered. All these years I enjoyed but what to speak of joy I

couldn't even feel peace for an hour. Then I felt detached. And I developed quest

for Truth. After a long search and practice of introspection and meditation I

knew it is Mystica Trancensia which is jnana samvit. So I became established inthat. As many objects there were were merely poisonous. Use of poisonous sense

objects can only kill you. Wife, wealth, fame, ego and all those which fascinate and

involve and entangle you in the trap are only to kill you spiritually. Spirituality-wise

you are dead when your search and quest and inquiry are hurt, damaged, injured

and finished.

Page 11: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

Vivekananda Page 11

"Sire, wait a minute please, explain how pleasure and senses are poisonous

and killers. I have heard only pesticides, smoke and acid polluted vegetables and

grains can kill mankind. But if things are pure they prolong life, and life can be

used for spiritual progress?"

"That is right. Life can be used for spiritual progress, but it is not. Justlike in 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th and early 20th century, there were no polluted

vegetables, grain, milk and all things were clean and pure. Still very rare people

were able to develop search for Truth. Most of them were orthodox, fanatical,

ambitious and spent their time in fighting or competing with each other. Following

are the reasons why objects of senses, no matter how clean and pure they are

hygenically and according to health rules, still they produce the following poisons--

(1) Disease -- When you live by eat, drink and be merry motto, then no matter how

clean and healthy things you eat are, you will fall sick, and time and attention whichis to be devoted in practice of yoga, that is used in healing the body.

(2) Even when you have desire to meditate still mind imagines rational reasons to

not do so. Such as it says, "It is not a good time," or "It is not a good place."

When we have expected situations then we will meditate. It is known as styana.

(3) When you are rich and famous you come in contact with great, educated,

learned and smart people who are also rich and famous. They rule the world and

spirituality connoisseurs are not very rich. Then you doubt whether God reallyexists as Puranas say or it is just a conception. Meditation is actually leading

somewhere great or it is self hypnosis leading to another fantasy island. Kaivalya,

Bramha, are reality or just words for a new spiritual business. This is samsay,

suspicion. You have to transcend it by trust and respect in words of sastras and

enlightened ones.

(4) Not trying hard enough to meditate and know the Bramha. It happens when

you become too much dull or business-minded or workoholic. Then you feel bored

or indifferent from doing solid things for spiritual progress. This is lethargy, pramad. Just have to work hard in here too. This is another poison worldliness

gives you.

(5) By enjoying too much these things of the world you develop mucus and air

bubbles in the belly. Your nervous system becomes dirty and it creates laziness in

your mind. You want to sleep too long, watch out! If you sleep too much, more than

Page 12: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

Vivekananda Page 12

five hours, there is mucus and dirts in the system. And you have to do satkarma of

hathayoga or Panchakarma of Ayurveda. Or you go on wasting your valuable time in

yawning, burping, sleeping long and snoring. This laziness is another poison which

worldly joy gives you.

(6) In order to enjoy in the world you make worldly friends. The way they think,

act and talk are spirituality-wise bogus, tiring and timewasting, but because you

have no purity of heart so you cannot see their dark side of personality and you

flow on with them in talks, acts, plans of passion and involvement. Your chances of

setting the perspective right goes away and is finished. So watch staying stuck

with passion which in itself is a poison. And you have chances to stay dead

spiritually all your life. So get out.

(7) Misconception, misunderstanding, illusion or similar weakness are also poisonborn of a sensual life structure. To see joy, peace, success and rightness in those

who are not in the path of Bramha realization, who are in world of sense

gratification, this is bhranti darsan. By your, this birdbrain, light weighted way of

thinking, you will fail in meditation. If you have meditation then you are destined

to fall. So you will have to develop vision to see them eating those sweetballs

which are mixed with poison.

(8) Due to some vasana or samskaras stuck deep down somewhere, trying hard,

still you cannot get the state of higher awakening. Then you feel really verydisappointed. This is alabdhabhumikatva.

(9) Even when you attain what you wanted but cannot uphold onto it and cannot

prepare for the next stage of awakening then you have this problem --

anavasthitatva.

These are all poisons and they are born of eat, drink and be merry, or,

nonmeditating, nonsearching lifestyle.

"Dear Sage, this body is a river, intellect is a fish. When it raises its head in

desire of sense gratification, then stork of passion grabs it and swallows it. When

swallowed you become passion. The owner of the body falls from the path of Self

Realization and thereby Bramha realization too.

"These joys are thieves. When soul accompanies them soul is robbed of his

Self identity. When this happens there goes endless series of birth and death.

Page 13: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

Vivekananda Page 13

Innumerable forms, bodies, personalities, identities and ways of living becomes

inevitable. As clay riding on the potter's moving wheel, compulsorily moves to take

many forms, so is soul devoid of Self identity in Bramhic reality assumes billions of

forms. And obsessed by intoxication of passion he goes through untellable and

sufferingful circumstances that are undescribable. But now those days are over. Iam awakened.

"Dear Sage, worldly pleasure is a cobra. Cobra bites and one dies. Bitten by

cobra of worldly pleasure spiritual death happens to you. Because you lose your

fire of enthusiasm and stormy search for something beyond life and death. For

which body soul strives so hard to possess objects of pleasures and long before

that be old and gets diseased too. Projecting ego upon this is cause of all miseries

and follies. A frog fallen on the mouth of a serpent trying to kill and eat some

mosquitoes, that is how human life is. That is what everyone who is eating meat is

doing in America."Life is like lightening. That is momentary in comparison to a day of

Bramhaaji to whom one day is four billion years. And to Indra and Manu whose one

day consists of about 386 million, 72 lakh years. Even in this short span, twelve

years of childhood is wasted in playing with toys, till age thirty he remains

fascinated towards new relationships, attraction for the opposite sex is too

dominant. Till age sixty, anxiety for career and prestige is like a rock on the chest.

After that is just awaiting death.

"As if someone is journing in the burning hot sun, tired and perspired in a

deserted, treeless place. He needs a cool shadow of a tree, but it is impossible tofind one. But there is a huge cobra, a python with a large hood upraised, and there

is some shade under his hood. Can he go there and rest for sometime? Trying to

find happiness through sensual contacts is exactly like that.

"River flows downwards, similarly foolish mens' mind moves downwards -- to

sense gratification. World is illusion, maya -- a mirage of water in the desert

cannot satisfy your thirst, same way no peace can come from sensual contacts.

It is water which runs and flows through the river towards the ocean and

not a stone, same way, only ignorants rush to sensationalism and not the wise.Perfume in lotus is only till then as long as a cobra's hiss has not touched it.

Mind is a reservoir of perfumes of great humanistic qualities but as soon as passion

cobra hisses against it perfumes are gone. Poison of hankering for sensations is

left behind.

If you shoot the arrow of mind from the bow of the Self onto the imitation

of meaning of life which is object of sensations then you lost. Nothing is left to

shoot the target of supreme possibility of life. You then just vegetate.

"All relationships which bother, restrain or do not help you to transcend thefilial and transcient are cause of trouble and swallower of your valuable time.

"Holy Sire, now I have transcended them all. Now object of sense

gratification cannot attract and fascinate me like a stone statue of lotus cannot

attract a bumble bee."

Soon they concluded their conversation and bade goodbye to each other and

flew in the sky like two birds heading towards different destinations into far and

furtherest horizons. They flew...

RAMA'S QUESTIONS VASISTHA'S ANSWERS

"Holy Sire, through which body did you meet and converse with the yogi? I

am asking you because you have described how you had transformed yourself into a

subtlest clay particle. And it must have been lying somewhere on the earth in the

form of an atom. How did you move around?" asked Sri Rama.

I traveled through antavahak body. It is through this body I went to the

planets of siddhas, angels, Indra, Varuna and Kuber. I was seeing them all but nonewere seeing me unless I wished so," said sage Vasistha.

"Holy Sire, antavahak body is not an object of senses then how did he see

you? How did you talk to him?"

It is because my will was powerful. Whomever I wished by my will he saw

me. Then his will communicated with me. When both are siddha, and their will

wave length is different, they may not know each other not even see each other.

When one siddha has far greater will he will not only know and see all others butmake them see, speak and communicate well. Although the yogi's will was not to

see me or talk to me but I had. And I had power all the double. And my will

brought him, pulled, all the way. Power wins. That is how he saw me and all others

saw me and conversed with me.

One who is an antavahak body he knows the events of all three times. But

when he acts, knows only the present and forgets the rest. That is why he has

Page 15: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

thrown away my body. Because it was absorbed in the Mystica trancensia. The

cottage slipped away from my will and fell from its existence only because I willed

for going back to my Star to never come back to this spot. If I had kept the

thought of coming back, cottage would not have fallen nor the yogi inside.

"Holy Sire, that is wonderful. Oh, so much, so amazing power you have.

Thank you. Now, please tell us where did you go and what did you do?"

"Dear Rama,"

Then I rose into the highest sky and traveled to the planets of vidyadhar,

gandharv, kinnar, risi, muni and angels; I saw them but they did not see me. I sang

songs of love, wisdom and joyous events but they wouldn't hear me, won't see me.

Just like anyone makes alot of noise in dream nobody hears him in waking state.

And one who has risen above desires cannot know the conditions through whichdesiring men are going through. Same way I became like ghost.

"Holy Sire, tell me about ghosts. How is their body, life and action; where

do they live?"

"Dear Prince,"

Ghosts have no form, but they assume various forms. Many stay like hollowgram.

Some others like shadow, some others assume the form of animals -- such as hog,

crow etc. They see, know each and all, but no one sees them unless someone isspiritually advanced and wills to see them or help them. They do suffer from heat

and cold. They do have desire, aversion, greed, anger, wanting respect,

misunderstanding. They hanker for cool water and good food. They live in cities,

trees and stinking impure places. They often enter in a fox, dog or mind of any

impure, unclean ladies and men who stink, have bad breath and think unclean

thoughts. These ghosts could be subdued by mantra, recitation of Gita, Chandi,

Ramayana and other scriptures along with charity. There are three kinds of

ghosts: satvik (peaceful), rajasik (hyperactive) and tamasic (terrifying). The

satvic ghosts live in temples, rajasic live in costly mansions, tamasic live in trees, ruined forts and dilapidated houses.

Even then, Rama, ghosts too have become ghosts due to their vasanas --

passions. Originally they are neither ghosts nor goblins nor world. Bramha alone

exists like kalpa vriksa (desire tree) and as one has cherished wishes so they have

become.

Vivekananda Page 16

In the pure atma "I'm" bubble has arisen and this is all what ego is. Due to

rockification of ego the mind has been born. This mind is Bramhaaji. He lives in

Bramhaloka--in the head. And this Bramhaaji has created the world through his

mind. Mind can only imagine, dream, fantasize, and that is what world is to

Bramhaaji. Bramhaaji has expanded in the vastness of world and he has antavahakbody. But due to rockification of will appears material. But all are mental fantasy

and long cherished dream which has come disguised as waking, and in fact, as life

itself. One who has solid ego in his body world to him is too physical. And as much

deeper and greater is the obsession of passion and binding impressions of karmas,

so much as only reality this world appears. As much your awakening comes, so much

it feels as mere mental projections -- just mind games. In fact, nothing as world

has ever born nor will perish anything. Neither is me, nor you nor Bramhaaji, nor

world. Because this entirety is Bramha -- Sarvam Khalvidam Bramha. And as there

is no difference between sky and hollowness, fire and heat, air and vibrations, so isno difference between Bramha and this world. Other and outside Bramha

whatever is is illusion.

Five elements are ingredients, sixth is mind, and these are potential and

essential cause of creation. As long as lethargy towards atma exists, so long the

illusion of world is existence will not finish, and so long no joy, no peace will ever

dawn in life.

Atma is a pond. Consciousness is water. Bubbles are mud. There live

fourteen kinds of frogs born of elements. They are all will of someone and so many

there on.Sky has certain zones in which huge rocks hang and rotate around. Heavens

and celestials are such rocks and stones. White rocks are celestials, yellow are

humans, blackish are animals. All are Bramha. Everyone has antavahak body but

due to negative will, intense focus on dark side of the wall they have lost their

access to it. Each one has different will, accordingly they see different kinds of

worlds. Each one lives in his own mini-world.

"Holy Sire, if each one lives in their own separate mini-worlds then why souls

appear to be living in society, and nation, and why do they seek unity? Whyhusband and wife torment to meet each other and live together?"

"Good question, thank you Rama,"

I am proud of you, so bright student I have in you. Answer is: Just as a citizen of

USA goes to Nepal or any third world country, he sees everyone as unknown and

different so he flings away his suit. puts on his shorts, short sleeved shirt and

Page 17: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

mixes with all those differents while walking on the streets, eating in restuarants,

staying in guest houses, visiting libraries, US Embassy, talking with groups of

people, he appears as part of the crowd. Only slight difference of skin but if you

see them from a helicopter they all look the same. It is not possible to

differentiate them as other than Nepalis; likewise is the family, society and nation. All are different, all with mini-universes, all with their own opinions,

expectations and ideas but they combine under one common purpose. Just like a

hunger strike, pay raise strike, election, rebellion against government. All

different people of diverse social tastes and different national backgrounds unite

and work hard for the cause. Their intensity of working hard makes their

togetherness strong and they look like one family. Many times they become far

dearer than family members. Just like India's Independence Fight, USA's

Freedom Fight, but when the purpose is accomplished all separate. Of course,

truly uniting makes history and leaves sweet memories. And that is what has filledthe books of mundane people's libraries, bookshops and universities. But these all

meetings are temporary, too conditional and in a way selfless looking, but very

selfish while they are together, yet they cannot see the personal mini-worlds of

the other. As much as you stay insensitive towards that you have more chances

the unity will be lost because the other will seek to go and live there with those

who comply with his or her mini-world more and more and more. There is no end to

this hunger of more.

When you cognize the other's hidden world into whatever extent you feel

responsibility to make your world too like him or her. If you happened to see aMiss USA and had dinner with her then you may try to fix your mini-world in tune

with hers. If her world is rubbish you will fail to see its rubbishness because your

higher values have been projected upon winning her confidence. And you might be

ready to sacrifice one by one or all whatever good you have. But still your both

worlds will remain different and diverse. Only for business purposes you have

adjusted for awhile.

When dating goes on, marriage comes, living together your fascination grip

loosens; then if you are not hypocrite, as ninety-nine percent Americans are, you

will not pretend you still love and keep on saying "I love you" although you hateeach other somewhere deep down into extent your mini-worlds have crashed and

struck hard against each other. In pre-enlightenment life all unity, equanimity are

illusions, artificial and deceptive.

All are different into an extent an alien. Each family member is as different

and alien as whites to blacks, as Americans to Mexicans, as Christians to Moslems,

as devoutly religious to an infidel, as US citizens to a Marsian. That much

Page 18: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

Vivekananda Page 18

different, alien and foreign everybody is. This difference and one's aloneness has

to be recognized. If you use your smartness in this field, in this context, and

knowing well still do not ever misuse to escape from your responsibility, venerated

duty and loving relationship as divinely ordained, then your spirituality is of some

worth. Otherwise you are just wasting time. They only look like being together but in reality not. As soon as give take

karmic debt-rinanubandhu is paid off, people split no matter how closely together

they were.

Obsessed and possessed by the law of karmic debts people in the world stay

blinded and deaf and dumb higher understandingwise. Just like an owl sees

darkness even in midday sun. Even if one thousand suns have arisen and bright light

is all over still to the special tamasic ghosts it is all dark. Just like this darkness,

there is another darkness which has blinded off all the people of the world

including learned, university graduates, PhD's, and that darkness is the darkness ofparticular kind of decision.

"What kind of decision, Holy Sire?"

Any kind of decision. Whatever you will decide will be related to part of

your mini-world. Your decisions tell what kind of mini-world you are carrying. Your

aura carries the light of your mini-world. To a Mystica trancensia attained one

everything is clear and bright. He sees in and through your mini-worlds and

accordingly deals with you. He sees atma equally in you as himself and in all, butdeals with you differently -- the kind of mini-world you are carrying upon your

chest. That is responsible for his particular behavior towards you.

"Holy Sire, what happened next?"

I continued traveling all over the cosmic egg, in all different lokas. Siddhas,

gandharvas, devas, nagas, vidyadharas -- I went to their lokas. I moved right

through them but they did not see me. Even I went through lokas of Bramhaaji,

Visnu, Shiva and Indra but none saw me nor became aware of my presence. Then Ishook Indra holding his shoulders upon his throne, but still he did not see me. Then

at last I willed they should see me. And everyone began seeing me, and I became

known as Vasistha. I am Vasistha but still my material and antavahak bodies are

just ripples in chidakasa. I act established in absolutely nondual experience of

Bramha. I accept, I enjoy things which come to me as pravaha patit through

prarabdha-vega. Pushed by the stream of destiny fallen in the pool of within my

use.

"Why Holy Sire, why?"

Because, world is transformation of Self experience. Life is nothing but

modification of what one considers of himself. Not more than that not less than

that. As whatever is appearing in the dream is only whatever you are able to feel

and project and perceive and experience of yourself. That is why.

"Why after all, Sir?"

Because in wish fulfilling gem (chintamani) and desire tree (kalpa vriksa)

whatever feeling you project that is what you obtain. Therefore practice to seeyour Self, Rama, find your Self. Then there is possibility of some intelligence.

"Holy Sire, who is, tell me a great intelligent person?"

Intelligence in this world of follishness is very rare. Because most people

are just hovering like a fallen dry leaf from a tree at the mercy of wind -- wind is

the desire, a passion for happiness of one's own choice and preference.

All the Vice Chancellors of all famous universities, Heads of Departments of

Philosophy, all Deans are also burning in the fire of anguish to achieve their kind ofhappiness that is leading, pushing and dragging them astray from the path which

truly leads where they want to reach what they want to attain. As worms live in

the inauspicious places, and feel pleasure in places where they can satisfy their

sensation hankering senses. In my opinion they are insects of stinking mud pedals.

And gandharvas, the loka of great musicians where Mozart, put great eastern and

western musicians names, after death are living and enjoying. In my eyes they are

the most cabbageheaded ones. They are ignorant as deer, the animal fascinated by

tunes and juggleries of sound -- another illusion. They stay intoxicated in playing

with tunes, melodies and dancing by that. Thus they close the doors of allpossibilities to dance about in the ecstasy of just one's pure, original Self.

"Holy Sire, what is the ecstasy of just one's original Self?"

"Dear Prince,"

It is doing nothing just existing. And acting expecting nothing.

Page 20: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

"Okay, then who else are more dodos? Let us hear your list so that we keep

away from their nearness?"

Vidyadharas too are of birdbrains. Because they explore the variousmeanings of the Vedas they are great scholars, all PhDs, but they just burn them

into the fire. Because they use them to invent every new possible avenue to make

life luxurious and enjoy as much as they can. They avoid the true meaning to

comprehend and work out. They remain lethargic towards atmic goal.

Siddhas are the next on the list of dumb bunnies. They have transformed

their bodies through yoga into weightless, helicopter-proof nervous systems and

keep flying like birds and enjoying the panoramic beauties of several planes of

existence. They have all the siddhis but no brain to realize the Bramha.

Yaksas are another beetlehead they are so rich. Perhaps they bring andthey hide away great treasuries of Soloman, Eldorados, all gold and diamond mines.

They are their possessions. All wealth ever heard of are just cheap coins thrown

away by Yaksas. They never aspire for Bramha realization.

Yoginis are also very superhuman. All wonder women of America, Japan and

ancient Sparta put together make an image of a yogini. All what you watch in

Olympic girls doing fantastic acrobats, somersaults, spinning in and through space;

what if some Svetalana in Barcelona leaps up one hundred feet high doing

somersaults, spinning does fantastic dancing and resting on a thread string she

sings, plays gitar holding in her armpits another one and a flute, she plays them allthree, sings, keeps spinning and doing somersaults for full three hours. Then what

will be her score. How the whole of Europe will be amazed. Yogini, even an

insignificant one can do it. Then what to speak of a superb one. But they are the

ones who in my view are dingbats. Because they just remain lost in display of their

power, art, wealth and exhibiting lethargy for Bramha realization.

Daityas are so powerful. Their bodies are majestic and steel hard. They

look amazingly impressive. Power, wealth and smartness are their natural

symptoms. But they too are just jackasses. They misuse their strength and

wealth to fulfill their ambitions which involves so much violence and attacks uponinnocent, angelic beings. They seldom think of Bramha realization.

Nagas and Naginis are so beautiful but waste all their time in just romancing

around, tasting, touching, lovemaking, that is all they know. They are too smart in

these but equally hammerheaded in realizing themselves like them who live lavishly,

carelessly, are all unwise and dunces.

(b) ksina-susupti -- reduced sleepiness

(c) svapna -- dreaminess

(d) jagrat -- accepted waking state

Stones, rocks, mountains are in maximum, hard rock sleep. They are in realm

of complete unawareness and insensitivity. This is ghana-susupti. They feel onlyfaint and subtle pain and pleasure.

Trees, plants and creepers are in the realm of minimum, soft sleepiness.

They feel pain and joy, some more than rocks but cannot distinguish respect and

insult. This is ksina-susupti.

Animals. bords. omsects amd worms are in realm of fantasy. They are in

dreamy state of life. With exception of twenty percent of animals and birds the

rest feel half their life in our one day. They cannot distinguish things of life and

world clearly.

Human, astrals and celestial beings are in realm of waking state. They areconscious, sensitive and distinguish. But still, full awakening, it is only a possibility.

Ninety-nine percent of humans and celestials are unaware, insensitive and

indiscriminate of anything beyond their physical body which is only an outer

covering, a cage for bird of his soul. But still they are in jagrat realm.

Suffering and happiness are felt more or less according to one's vasana. But

everyone suffers, that is correct. When there is arson, when there is wild fire,

then trees and stones too get burns. But gross and subtle, as there is distinction,

both suffer.

When you cut a tree, when you chop off its branch, it suffers too. Stone suffersless, animal suffers more, human suffers the maximum.

When there is sinful vasanas soul receives stone, tree, worm and animal

species.

When vasanas are rajasic soul finds human specie.

When vasanas are satvic soul finds celestial species.

When soul attains freedom from vasanas he attains enlightenment. Then

great wisdom arises, then only all sufferings are finished. To me, none of these

species exist, only and only chidakasa is permeating all over. Due to lethargy in

context to one's true Self beings are acting under hypnosis of fear, anger, greed,old-age, death, hunger, thirst, attachment and aversion, pleasure, lamentation,

desire -- and they are burning in the fire of it.

Neither there is world nor no world, nor empty nor void. Only pure

consciousness is established in itself. And upon it birth, life and dream of another

life and inside it dream of another life reflects. As you are one. Due to

incapability to stay awake you fell asleep. And due to sleep problem dream came.

Page 23: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

Vivekananda Page 23

And being one, duality prevailed. Diversity expanded. But atma is still non-dual,

pure existence.

Misery is caused by misunderstanding. When you understand rightly all

miseries are gone. Ignorant man is miserable but when he makes in-depth

considerations upon all fields of life it is gone or at least feels self imposed. Andyou can get out of it by simply not cooperating with it, not projecting, and not

identifying with it. If it sounds difficult or impossible then that is where you need

to practice yoga. You need deep meditation. As much difficult is disidentification

and unconditioning oneself from it, so much more compulsorily you need regular and

punctual meditation. And as much it is easy to witness the suffering, no matter

how serious and difficult your problem is, so much less and less you need spiritual

practice. Meditation is to decondition your identification with all the tools of

misery. That is why meditation is called to be a technique for suffering free life.

In fact meditation removes the blockages that are in between you and your originaltrue Self, nature of which is sat chit and ananda. And when this experience is

unconditional and eternal this is Bramha. Then as a brilliant sunshine knows no

more darkness you have no possibility of darkness of suffering in the bright light

of Bramha realization.

Then as someone who is still dreaming recollects his home and family of his

waking state then he begins to see all things and places of dream sight as his

ownself, same way one who knows Bramha the universe becomes your own Self.

Constant ceaseless perception of the world as your own Self is the nature of truewaking state. This flame of true waking is the goal of life. And one who recognizes

this goal and speedly moves towards it feels he or she has achieved the meaning of

life. At each stage of evolution new meaning is unfolded until the last explosion of

ultimate meaning.

"Holy Sire, tell again please, one who feels world as real and is faraway from

Self realization what is for him the way to ultimate meaning of life?" A guest

asked.

It is upon pure consciousness (samvit) upon which place, time, action and

things have become solid and hard. As much hard and permanent this blemish has

gotten stuck so much duality is deep rooted. If you do not flush, brush, broom,

mop and clean up this blemish through remembrance of your nondual nature, dirts

of duality never vanish. As long as your nondual Self nature is not constant in and

through your life you stay an ignorant dunce. Life of such a dunce is prolonged

Page 24: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

dream. That is why its name is jagrat-waking. One should girdle one's loin and

biting teeth by teeth with do or die spirit jump into this outstanding decision --

this world is composed of your own Self. Self is the ingredient. Therefore Bramha

and world are as nondifferent and the same as moon and its shine, dancer and the

dance, singer and the song, actor and acting. As autumn's clear sky is spotless andshimmering and vast so is Bramha, in the form of your own Self is illuminating.

Know this and this is the process. Just stand strong and hard and feel "I am not"

or "I am all".

"Holy Sire, one who has attained the ultimate meaning of life how he looks,

how he acts, how he talks and how he interacts?" asked princess of Rome.

Reverence for life has become his second nature. He has friendship even

with trees, stones and sky. He loves people as mother loves her child. As sky doesnot touch anybody they remain uninvolved. Trouble is their adventure. All juicy

stuff of the world becomes to him as tasteless. As Mount Himalayas cannot be

moved by hit of a rose flower so also the one who has gotten the meaning of life

never gets bothered by endless series of trouble nor is excited by everything

accomplished. As crystal stone -- so white and transparent that whatever colored

object you place in its front instantaneously reflects. But it never changes its own

form.

Same way whatever objects, person, place, time and situation of the world passes

through the Self they just follow, same way impressions of pleasure and pain --does not happen, does not change his inside. Only outside may change but only if he

allows it. That happens when he has accepted some duty and responsibility in

certain field. Such as husband or wife, father or son, guru or king. He acts as

everyone else only he establishes an ideal, a model for all to revere and follow.

Just like bubbles and waves rise in the water and then submerge and water

has no qualms about it. Water never laments nor rejoices, same way one who knows

Bramha neither attaches nor averses.

He is mercyful to all, whatever pain and pleasure fall in on his way as log

fallen on the stream of Ganga he goes through them. As air blows with odor and

perfume but it remains uninvolved and gets out of it as soon as possible. Same way

an intelligent one acts in the world. How they see, what they see they only know.

As perfume of sandal is so fragrant in the forest but it cannot be known and

perceived from a distance, same way body identified cannot know what is going on

Page 25: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

in an enlightened mind. Through your eyes and senses you cannot know and unless

you are qualified he does not tell.

If you offer invaluable chintamani gem to an illiterate, dirty, smoking papaur

he cannot know the value of it. He cannot admire it. Ignorants only dishonor thewisdom of Intergalactic history and Lovetrance world. They only will look into the

language and check it by their confused and insensitive intellect. That is why those

who are highly wise do not expose it to the nonunderstanding iron heads.

If I learn this knowledge, if I read all these, if I write books on the subject,

if I learn to lecture on this, then I will get so many disciples all over the world, I

will be worshipped, my pictures and message will be printed in International

magazines like Time and Life. I will appear on television and I will give press

conferences. To all these intelligent persons consider as illusion as gandharva-nagar and Indra-jala. One who is after these to them they do not open up

themselves. And if these ambitious beings come, sit near him and hold his feet he

retreats and goes in hiding or does something to turn them off. As tortoise

withdraws and squeezes his limbs inside his body, same way wise one squeezes away

his wise decision inside within himself. But whenever he finds right, qualified

person he exposes all his wealth.

"Holy Sire, why he does things like that? He should offer all of his wealth

to everybody he finds in the way without cause and condition. Why to hide in givingpeople good things?"

"Dear Rama,"

The best thing looks good and does good to the body and all around only if it is kept

in proper vessel. If you offer grass to the cow it becomes milk. If you offer grass

to the US President while he is on his procession you will be named as crazy, a

lunatic. If you offer milk to a cobra it becomes poison, if you feed milk to Kapila

cow it becomes a special milk with lotus perfume. The rightful person should get

the valuable thing. If unrightful person gets some powerful mantra he will becomepowerful and all the best he will do is become a psychic cop. He will run down to

sell it in the markets of America.

Anima, mahima, laghima, are wonderful powers. Whoever tries hard to

accomplish these powers will get it. But after getting these powers he will fly in

the sky, he will just act like batman or wonderwoman. All these things remain

interesting only so long as you have not been capable of figuring out your way to

Page 26: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

Bramha realization. If you did figure out then nothing is there in America which

can allure you and occupy you as very important task to be busy about. Yes,

nothing is there in Las Vegas, nor in Atlanta, nor in the Whitehouse, nor in

Buckingham Palace, nor in heaven, nor in Rasatal, nor in Bramhalok, nor any amount

of nine plus eighteen plus twenty-seven super natural powers of yoga. There is nothing really to be too busy about. You are too busy for

Bramhajnana, you are a jackass. No matter how brilliant and intelligent you are, no

matter how high marks and distinction you received in each exam in your university

if your intellect stumbles to comprehend Bramhajnana you are but a cabbagehead.

A Bramhajnani just laughs looking at the world. Because it is only a

reflection and is only reflecting upon one's atma. Just as a tree in the mirror, a

grove in the pond, a colored paper in a crystal gem. But ignorants just goof around

and keep burning in their heart in fevers of jealousy, competition, romance,

ambition and wealth. A dog closed in a room of mirrors looks all around, seesanother one of himself and many more and goes on barking and fighting with all of

them. Just like a wild fire surrounds a village and begins burning it. Somehow one

wiseman becomes able to secure a group of people and leads them onto a hilltop and

they watch all homes burning, then as he feels same way a realized saint feels. As

someone gave you one million dollars in cash and then took it away before awake,

same way, are the things of the world, meeting with people of the world.

Cloud takes water from the ocean and showers all over the world. Same way

Holy Sage, wise guys, intelligent man showers mercy and grace picking them upfrom the cloud of higher understanding-born inner maturity.

He looks at the suffering and problems of physical body as it is happening to

an inert object outside himself. Those who are not in such state their life burns,

their heart keeps aching with anxiety, worry, likes and dislikes. Looking at his

peace people all around also feel peace and enjoy his presence. Those who have

gone to the heaven and enjoy entwinement with beautiful nymphs and walk in

Nandanban groves, same and more than that, seeker of life's meaning enjoys

association with enlightened intelligents.

That joy is such that eight siddhis seem to be too insignificant.

"Where do they live and how do they behave?" asked a Princess.

Many live in silent, cozy corners of green groves. Many live in hermitages

and cottages, others live in caves, others live in their ancestral homes. Many

meditate long, others do their ancestral accupation. Others do asceticism, others

do religion and philosophy, others become professors of idealistic philosophy and

existentialism. Others observe deep long silence. Some close their eyes innirvikalpa samadhi, others fly like birds in the sky. Remaining uninvolved he

performs actions. At the time he knows very well neither world nor action nor

prarabdha nor sanchit are true. As it is impossible to shoot an arrow from the bow

made of horn of a hare, same way world is not possible through karma.

"Holy Sire, how does chidakasa look like, how is Bramha you speak about?"

As from one mother two twin sons are born. Their appearance are similar,

but just for business two names are given to them. If you fill two pots with water, water is the same but names will be different. Same way in both, contents of

consciousness is the same but for the purpose of discretion and evolution two

names have been given. Thus one is known as dream, another is waking. And both

are conceived in the soul and soul is projected in atma. And upon which all these

fluctuate is called chidakasa. As tree, flower, fruit, leaves, grow and bloom

through juice, same way due to chidakasa all these function.

One whose all desires are gone, attachment and aversion are cleaned off and

has become spotless, clean like autumn sky, that is what chidakasa is. Sight, seeing

and seer, where these three are not existent that is chidakasa.Mind, like a child, has created the army of world cobweb beginning with

earth, water, air, fire and sky, to feel this illusion as reality is childish. Only child

believes in another child's imagination. Those who try to be happy by taking

shelter of this world are like trying to wash the sky by throwing it in the washing

machine. Trying to get anything is like barren woman trying to get a son is useless.

As in dream only to a sleeping man his ownself is perceived as earth,

mountain, river, events, suffering, happiness, along with benevolent and wicked

people, friend and enemy. Extremely jealous and extremely loving woman, friends,

business partners are just oneself perceived by oneself in oneself. But Self, theseselves are one atma, The Bramha.

STORY OF VIPASCHIT

"Holy Sire, you said world is non-existent only due to ignorance it feels like

true as dream sights. Only in this context it is true. Dream city is hollow, likewise

Page 28: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

world too is hollow caused by ignorance. Please tell me what is this ignorance?

How long it lasts, to whom it happens, what is proof?"

"Dear Rama,"

This ignorance does have an end yet it is approximately beginningless. Its end is atone's own hand. I will tell you an ancient history.

In one of trillions of thousands of atoms of chidakasa of one's inner Self

there are billions of bramhandas (consisting of innumerable universes). In one of

the planet Earths of one universe there is a beautiful state known as Kashmir.

This state has a most powerful, religious and majestic king. His name was King

Vipaschit. He was devotee of Lord Agni.

Once he was seated in his assembly, surrounded by hundreds of powerful,

illustrious ministers and citizens. And most interesting topics were being discussed

by his wise ministers.Right then a messenger arrived from the eastern boundary and reported,

"The eastern gate had been attacked by a very powerful enemy. The Governor is

fighting bravely but it won't be sufficient. The East needs your help!"

While he was completing his message another royal messenger arrived

perspiring, horse breathing heavily, and blurted out in haste, "His Majesty, the

West needs your help! We have been attacked!"

Then from the South and North too, messengers informed in extreme worry

and hurry of a violent, fierceful attack by the enemy. And each Governor is

fighting his best, but... Right then, the Governor of the North came, his limbsbroken, cut, torn off and he was bleeding. Holding onto his last point of patience

he urged, "His Majesty, please hurry or we perish!" Soon King gave the Governor

in custody of his personal Royal physician and went to a brain storm meeting.

"None of the three are applicable, His Majesty. It is too serious," they

said. "Neither sam (making peace) nor dam (buying the enemy) nor bhed (making

internal dispute), there is no time for any of these. All that is now left is danda

(to fight). Filled with utter enthusiasm we must fight!"

"Okay, let us march," King Vipaschit announced.

Soon was music echoed. General blew his conch aloud and within half an hourentire army of chariots, elephants, horses and pedestrians had arrived. King

ordered the General, "Proceed and start the battle, right away. I will go to

shower and worship Lord Agni and I am coming to the battlefield." Soon they

went.

King bathed in the holy water of Jhelam, wore new silk, picked flowers,

kindled the sacred fire, worshipped and offered oblations of sacred items. Lord

Agni appeared... King bowed down to him and prayed.

"My lord, all life I spent in acting according to Vedic injunctions. I

performed my duties as ordained by your Divine Self. I kept my citizens happy andpeaceful. My fame reached across the four oceans. My treasury has always been

full. In battle I have always been victorious. I enjoy all the best of the world. I

donated thickest amount to wisemen than anyone in my country. It is only now, my

lord, I have come across a very serious trouble. I don't know why these people

have attacked me so suddenly from all sides. It appears they have been preparing

from years and years. Without divine help I cannot get over with this trouble.

Yes, here is my offering, a token of love at your lotus feet." King was filled with

immense emotion, tears came to his eyes. He took off his sword and lo, he cut off

his head and offered it to Lord Agni. Then the rest also fell in the fire as oblation.Soon they turned into ashes. But then by the grace of Lord Agni four King

Vipaschits arose from the flame. They were wearing similar silk clothes,

ornaments, crowns, armors, swords, bows, quivers, and other weapons. They were

young and shining like lions ready to jump and finish the enemy. Following these

four was the army very powerful, bubbling with energy and enthusiasm.

"My dear devotee, go and be victorious!" Lord Agni was very pleased to see

them and he blessed.

Like streams of river army guided by four King Vipaschitas marched in four

directions. When Generals saw the King they were filled with great enthusiasmand began to fight. Streams of blood flew, like raindrops arrows showered and like

wood and logs, limbs and bodies of soldiers began to flow. Ariel cars of celestials

crowded in the sky--celestial maidens, nymphs began picking up the souls of those

warriors who had died in war heroically fighting according to dharma. After they

gave up their body of flesh and blood, like new suits they were given celestial

bodies, and nymphs garlanded and married them right then and there, and took

each of the heros with them in their ariel cars.

Also to the cowards and unrighteous fighters ghosts and goblins were

waiting to grab them. To the utter demonic fighters, who enjoy in killing others, who feel great peace and satisfaction in seeing somebody stabbed, brutally

murdered or tortured--Yama's messengers too were waiting to grab them by the

neck or throat and drag them to put them in beastly or animalistic species for

millions of years. Besides there on the minarets music was still echoing.

King Vipaschit saw all the enemy is dead. Also he saw his own armies too are

dead or have gone too far to fight. There was still danger to return to the city.

Page 30: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

Doors were properly locked and appointing enough safety officers to protect the

citizens, King moved further and further. All the four King Vipaschits moved

further and further, finally reached to the seashore of their own directions. They

saw swelling, high rising in blue garlanding waves ocean is welcoming. Gems,

diamonds, pearls are shining in different places. Water beasts are swimming, dancing, lifting their heads, looking all around. There are clove, cardamon, sandal

and coconut trees all around the seashore. There came ministers following them

searching his footprints. King embraced his ministers and they kept conversing for

a long time. In years they have not seen beauty of nature so relaxingly as now,

when all enemies are dead. Citizens will be enjoying their victory and awaiting their

arrival.

Minister showed the king very interesting and mysterious places. He said,

"Wealth, health and youth lead man to the downfall or nectar-fall. It all depends

on your mind, your level of consciousness.""Dear King, in the ocean somewhere there are gems, somewhere seashells or

snails. Same way, in the sea of world there are gems of wise men and somewhere

snails of ignorants. Somewhere sea monsters, somewhere Vidyadharas, but ocean

has no qualms, no attachment, no hatred. Same way, enlightened wise man is always

cool in all circumstances.

"Dear King, look at this," Minister said. "There are those birds; they live in

this mountain. There live those Vidyadharas, there live those Gandharvas.

Somewhere yogis, somewhere bramhacharis and baragis. Look at the peacocks

dancing, deers leaping, monkeys jumping. And there vast sky above, like a man ofBramhajnana he is untouched, unattached and free. He is equal to auspicious and

inauspicious both. Heaven and hell, Bramhin and chandal. White mens' place, black

mens' place, both are alike to him. He is all permeating like heart of a wise man.

In the day it is white, in night dark, at dusk and dawn reddish yet beyond all three.

When midday sky feels hot, moonlit night cool, rainy season rainy. Flowers around

and perfuming, skunks around stinking, but sky is beyond both.

"It is you sky who gives space to grow to the trees, to the hills and of course

to the men. Innumerable people, civilizations, events and accidents happen in you

but you remain you. All disappear in you and you remain established in your veryyou-ness.

"Dear King, there in that colony of astral beings on that hilltop lived a

Vidyadhara with his beautiful wife. Once a holy Sage arrived in their abode. They

were absorbed in amorous play so they could not welcome the Sage as were

expected full of warmth and reverence. So he cursed them to go become a tree

and vine for twelve years. Both had become since then a tree and a vine. While we

Page 31: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

are sitting here the time ended and they just came back to their life in

Vidyadharhood. Look how happy they are. How strange is the maya of God. People

and things change. They become so many things inconceivable and indescribable.

"O Cloud," Minister's poetic heart soared high and he spoke as if composing

poems. "Thanks to you a lot. In holy places are your abodes. You live high. Youare beautiful. Your activities look benevolent except one mishap that you shower

hailstorms, ice cubes which destroy crops. Ignorants too are like that. They

appear good and beautiful too. Look at these in Olympics, television shows,

contests and parties. Ignorants' gestures are beautiful but by heart they are

stupid, cruel and lazy too in relation to Self realization. Their association is always

brain-thickening, workoholizing and mind turbulentizing. Dog barks and bites if

anyone goes near him unfamiliar. He goes door to door in third world countries and

walks in dusty places. Ignorants too, like that spites and gives strange looks to all

those whom he cannot categorize and cannot understand. Instead of trying tobroaden the scope of their understanding they blaspheme the high minded,

superhuman wise men and wise women. But in his heart he craves, hankers and

thirsts for worldly achievements which he sees around them.

"Hello Mr. Dog of a dirty village of third world country, is there anyone

worse than you?" asked some wise man.

"Sure there is one," dog replied, thinking deeply. "The one who is trapped in

the cobweb of body-identification. I am in fact greater than him, because

whoever feeds me I guard his home. I sit at his door, but they who feed them

make a hole in the plate of the giver. That is foremost of what body-identifiersdo. Because greater intensity of body consciousness makes one selfish and then

anything worse is possible. But even when I am a dog my identification is more in

gratefulness than in my doghood. Although I cannot do any worth doing with my

restlessness which nature has imposed on me. Although that too is my own karma.

But what to do, bullet is shot. Cannot get its return. All I can do is to address the

bullet towards body-identification. And that I am doing instead of doghood. I am

just trying to become gratefulness. It is body-identification that man gets into

bigger trouble."

"Dear King, body identity is the source of all identity crises. It makes him acrow which utters irritating, harsh words-- kaw kaw. Bumble bees were sitting all

around on blooming and perfuming lotuses on a pond. Enjoying the honey, crow

came and he laughed at them with his kaw kaw. That is what happens when you do

yoga in America and Europe. When you practice Prem Meditation, when you join

Bramhajnana Therapy Society, you're enjoying of honey tastes are misunderstood

by less intelligent people, the crows, who know and can understand only body and

Page 32: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

its familiar objects so they laugh at you. And many of you go brokenhearted, leave

and thus loose the possibility. But bees are wiser. They don't go confused by kaw

kaw of the crows. Instead they respond the crows with bigger laughter. That is

the way a crow can understand. Crows of America don't know the taste of spiritual

experience."O stupid crow, why you try to prove yourself equal to the swan. Swans live

on pearls. Pearls mean, Bramhajnana. O crow, the body obsessed ones from up

above the sky of higher, prestigious caste and position, your eyes look for the

heinous: meat of the dead, other's possessions, leftover food, jealousy, dirt, sex,

fear etc. But swan, even if you offer milk mixed with water, he drinks the milk and

leaves the water. When a person of understanding comes to help he/she does not

see the faults but sees only the good. But low class person sees only the faults and

never sees the good. And whoever you are you will find that in others.

"O cuckoo the seeker of Truth, why do you rejoice so much looking atblooming lotuses. You should rejoice when there is spring. And this is winter

season. Lotuses are going to be destroyed by snow cubes. Why seeker of Truth is

rejoicing on everchanging glamors of the world. They should rejoice when they find

that which is Truth. These are fake and ignorance thread woven. So why do you

sit in the crowd of thieves and decoits. Don't sit in their dens and gangs. Go there

where live your kind of people, where live Truth seachers as yourself.

"Look, when a crow ignorant goes and sits in the assembly of swans, the holy

men, he keeps looking for and eating dirt, means, he keeps thinking of using them

for his own financial benefit if not physical or sexual enchantment."As the child of cuckoo sits in company of crow, mother urges not to sit

there or he too would start eating filth, so seeker of Truth is warned not to

associate with ignorants. Otherwise, passion and bad habits will creep up and wipe

out good habits which have been earned.

"O vulture, why do you compete with swan? You fly high but you lack each

single quality which swan has. As soon as you see a piece of meat you jump on it.

You see only other's faults. Swan forgets faults even if told to him directly and

focuses his attention upon good deeds he has done. But selfish ones, even if all

good deeds are in the front, he does extensive investigations upon the person andfinds out what he wants -- faults and mistakes. If there are none he invents them.

He fabricates them. And adorns them and wears as a necklace gem of his heart.

"O stork, why you imitate the swan? You both are white but you are

hypocrite. You pose like meditating and when poor innocent fish come you grab

them. Swan is self contented deeply with his discretional achievements.

"Lily blooms when moon rises. Intelligence also looks beautiful, means,

harmonizing and sensitizing; usually common intellectuals are disecting and dividing

in pieces and getting their PhDs in the details of smallest disected piece of a

branch of knowledge. But this intellect is ugly. It becomes beautiful when

Bramhajnana arises.King Vipaschit, who went to South was sitting at the seashore of Indian

Ocean; second who went to the East was sitting with his ministers at the shore of

Pacific Ocean; third was at the shore of Atlantic Ocean and forth was at the shore

of Arctic Ocean. And the four Generals and ministers who were appointed to fight

at those doors oblivious of the existence of another, sat and talked for a long time.

They had great times at the sea beach. They had conquered all the lands all the

way to the four oceans. Considering upon their success their enthusiasm rose

mountain high and they decided to see, know and if possible, conquer the islands,

continents and whatever is there on the other side of the ocean. The King invoked Lord Agni. He appeared. Because he knew how devoted

King is now, who offered his head as tribute. If he will not appear to such a big

hearted person then to whom? So here was Lord Agni, shining brilliantly,

effulgently. "Ask for benediction!" his voice resounded.

"Lord, please offer me a benediction to be able to go , see and have

adventures over the entire earth. My body should become powerful and have

access to most difficult places. When it cannot go, let it go through mantra power.

Where mantra does not work, let it go with siddhi power. Where siddhi cannot

work, let us go through mind -- willpower. We must not die at any case.""So be it," said Agni and disappeared as waves vanish in the sea.

When King announced his journey all ministers lamented. "His Majesty, what

is this?" Wise, old ministers said who were working since the time of his parent's

reign. "Creating of God is infinite like himself. As much you will explore and will

have done for adventure, more than that will remain always to go and explore. It is

endless. So please let us go back to the capitol." But King had made up his mind.

He entered the sea in a huge ship. Sent his ministers home. Only a few younsters

followed him. Dancing above and low, up and down in the huge, blue, gigantic waves

King's ship moved. All the four King Vipuschits also decided the same and withselected ministers each sailed further.

In the middle of the ocean a huge whale which was from the same family in

which Lord Malsya was born. It was a fish of seventy feet long, forty feet wide

and thirty feet high. That fish swallowed the King and his ministers. Ministers

died, ship broke up but by the power of mantra King got out of trouble. He swam

miles and miles when an alligator swallowed him. He got out from there too.

He reached to the shore of an island, Hawaii. He stayed in the tribe of the

dancers. He dishonored Daksa who cursed him to turn into a tree. Shortly after

he was released he received the body of a frog. For one hundred years he

remained a frog. When death came, another frog body was provided. Then he

became human being again. He was haughty, sloppy and hot toned because of hispast frog life. So in his teen-age he happened to make a verbal assault on a

Siddhayogi. He cursed him to become a stone. For one hundred years he remained

a stone. Lord Agni remembering his past devotion rescued him and gave an

opportunity to become human again in the same town. One day the Siddha saw him

through his x-ray eyes and was amazed upon his relief. He made friendship with

him. From him he learned to attain great powers. When he became twenty-five

years old he traveled far and wide. In such traveling he fell in love with a Miss

Cacassia and settled in Russia. There he lived his full life enjoying materialistic

joy. Always he craved to fly when he saw birds taking flight in the clear open sky. After death he became a bird. Then he became human again in the state of Assam.

When he was young he did verbal attack on a woman who knew sorcery. He

challenged her to prove her worth in public. She turned him into a bull.

Second King Vipaschit who was exploring the Atlantic Ocean and further

countries also falling through many troubles has now become a man of great

psychic ability recognized through his past life being one of himself. He felt

responsibility to deliver him from this pitious condition. He became human again

but more than thirty-five years of his youth had wasted in remaining a bull so when

he was back to human he was sixty years old. This was equal to the age of thesecond Vipaschit. They became good friends and traveled together to many

different countries. Thus all four Vipaschitas went through many, many lives.

Western Vipaschit was gobbled by an alligator but rescued mysteriously by

the grace of Lord Agni who helped them in troubles for one life. In next life he

did not feel related since they broke many Vedic injunctions due to constant

journey and coming in contact with many different people and they lost their path

of devotion. Like everybody else their life became. One was roaming on the breast

of Europe, other in Siberia, third in Andes mountains, another on the bank of the

Nile river.

"Holy Sire, you told us Vipaschit was only one. They became four but still

their forms were alike, their goals were the same. Then how their likes and

dislikes became different and diverse. It is surprising to me. They were one in

inner consciousness. They were one physically too and produced to accomplish same

Page 35: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

one purpose to free the nation from alien attack, how they turned so different and

fell in diverse disasters?"

"Dear Prince,"

What is problem in understanding this piece of fact. Diversity is due to illusion.Consciousness is as same one as human slept and saw a dream. In dream he became

animal, then bird, then insect, then back to human. Taste and temperament always

changes. Age, time, association influence them to change. Change is an inevitable

evil or virtue, whatever calling you feel peace. You name it that is according to

your vasana. Body is one but it has different senses. Each one has different

ability and taste: Eyes like to see, nose wants to smell, ears wish to hear, skin

wants to be touched affectionately. Although mind is one but so fast it moves to

be with each of the senses that nobody doubts or charges that the whole humanity

(world) to be schizophrenic. All are functioning differently, operated by same onemind. And none of the senses can be replaced by another one. They are

independent and unique. Almost like another specie, another being. Thus are our

senses. In and through them mind is one. Still mind seems to be different in

different men, but beyond mind there is one consciousness, atma, Bramha is the

same -- only one. And all minds of world and cosmos are like senses -- stretched

out. Fluctuation of mind makes many manifestations of will and longing. If a yogi

matures himself in yoga and develops Mystic Torch and focuses on..... he attains a

power to multiphy himself in as many forms he wishes.

Many enlightened yogis assume more than one form to finish their prarabdhasoon to become liberated and also to help their followers. Pipaji used to do that.

King Sahastrabahu had many arms and used them for many different purposes at

the same time. Lord Visnu while resting in loka does thousand and one things all

over the world all the time. Somewhere he is incarnating on earth, somewhere he

is fighting with demons, somewhere he is accepting his share in yajnas. Somewhere

he is appearing to a long meditation absorbed devotee. Somewhere he is living in

his own new transcendental planet in his new form in which he recently incarnated

on the earth. And who knows, Prince Rama, you might be one incarnation of Lord

Visnu... Are you not...? Consciousness is the same one but manifestations arebillions and from one of the billions another tradition of billions can be started and

it goes on. Thus Vipaschitas fell in a cobweb of millions of never ending forms in

series.

Page 36: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

"Holy Sire, the Vipaschitas were enlightened beings. They were born of a

great sacrifice. They rose from the sacred flame. They had attained the grace of

Lord Agni. How they fell in the mire of birth and death?"

Of course they were devoted to the Lord and were born of a supernaturalprocess yet they were not enlightened. They were practioners of Mystic Torch.

He was worshipper of power and duty and they attained it, but they never tried for

supreme understanding. And liberation is attainable only through knowledge "rite

jnananna muktih". They were yogis combined with devotion. Symptoms of jnana

understanding is svasamvedya, means, self perceptable. But they journeyed for

adventure based on parasamvedya, cognizing through the other. That is why they

fell and lost.

"My lord, how yogis know of the three times and how do they performthousands of actions in far distant places staying in one place?"

This entire world is chidakasa. One who knows this truth is a great man. He

is an awakened one. If anyone wakes up during dream then all what he saw in

dreams feels like all of them happened within him. He is not bound. He is not

responsible for anything. Because he is not under the pressure of obsession

intoxication of vasana and samskara and karmas. All the world becomes his own

nature. Sky is established in its hollowness. This joy is only experiencable. Only

he knows the taste of nectar who ever tasted it. Ignorant's heart is burningconstantly by three miseries. Intelligent's heart is at peace. Body of a wise one is

cut in pieces, or he is coronated on the throne of emperor, he is ever at peace. He

may act as responding to the calls of physical torture, he may laugh too, but he

only knows the matter of his heart -- what he thinks about it. Main theme is

entire creation is in the consciousness (samvit) establishing in it they go wherever

they want to go, and know whatever they want to know. Past, present and future,

all are like an open book, like a direct present to them. Wherever they want to go

or whatever they wish to know they know it through antavahak body.

Bramhaa committed an offense, Lord Shiva chopped off his fifth head.Bramhaa thought, "I am chidakas nothing is lost, nothing gained. I have more

heads left, okay." He had no anger. Lord Shiva destroyed lord of lust because he

shot him with his arrow of sexual urge, but he didn't abandon Parvati. She was

pure love. He did not become angry nor lusty, nothing. Lord Visnu is said to be sky

blue Shyama sundar but to me he is all chidakas.

Just like someone imagines a city in the mind and he assumes himself too

living there having a body and starts doing a business in New York City. Then as

long as former body is not forgotten, so long he acts through body of his will and

desire. This will composed body is antavahak deha. To know this body only a

composition of will is called vises buddhi, special intelligence. In preenlightenmentlife your complete identification in this will composed body is developed an idea of

physical body. As long as the identity with physical body consciousness is intense,

materialism cannot be gotten rid of. In deeper and subtler sense you remain

materialistic no matter how heavily religious and philosopher you are known among

people. They have overestimated you and it is your duty to not let anyone in

anyway overestimate you. Or circumstances will move to cut you short.

All Vipaschitas were bereft of wisdom of Bramha. Like rich and famous out

of sheer curiosity and adventure they marched for new expeditions. They were

ignorant. Because they marched for seeing the panoramic view of new places whichwere and are composed of solidified universal ignorance. But this ignorance too has

no separate independent existance. It is also Bramha. And Bramha has no end, no

limit, then where from will come an end of ignorance composed world.

Both Vipaschitas walked all the way to the edge of Bramhanda, beyond

earth, water, fire, cloud, air, sky coverings of cosmic egg. They crossed beyond

tanmatra, ego, mahattatva, nature and entered in Bramhakasa. But then according

to their sankalpa there too again new world became apparent. They crossed

beyond that cosmic egg too and reached next Bramhakasa. Then next cosmic egg.

Thus they went on to the infinitum. Never found the end. It is as extensive asBramha. In fact world is never created. Bramhakas is existing exactly as it was.

Not knowing it is the world. As long as this not knowing syndrome continues so long

world continues. Not knowing Bramha is continuation of world cycle. It will end

when knowledge of Bramha will dawn in your heart. When the flame of mind will

extinguish. When nirvana of sankalp will take place in that you, in that lifetime the

world evaporates as mist.

"Holy Sire, please tell us what happened to the remaining two Vipaschitas?"

"Dear Prince,"

One of them attained enlightenment. The second crossing along the cosmic egg

entered in a new cosmic universe. There he found association of the knower of

Bramha. Then ray of understanding dawned in him. He too became enlightened.

The last one is still roaming around here, and he lives in the nearby mountain cave

in the form of a deer.

In the rays of the sun water appears. As long as rays appear water also

appears. As long as rays appear water illusion does not end. Same way as long as

ego stays on magic of world illusion goes on. By disappearance of rays alone water

will disappear. When you know atma then only existence and appearance of atma

will permeate and no world illusion will shadow the intellect.

"Holy Sire, Vipaschit was only one. How in one lone samvit (consciousness)

different vasana of various identity unknown to each other arose? One became

liberated, other still suffering in deer life. How come more or less, inconsistent

outcome around one Self?" asked Minister Sumantra.

"Dear Minister,"

Passion is caused by time, place and objects. In whatever you project your passion

due to your focused will that urge, that desire wins and turns into apparent reality. That is the mistery behind visualization techniques used in USA to achieve one's

toughest desired goal. Let me show you a man imagined in his fantasy four forms

of himself. Then he placed his passion in all four separately. Now although

consciousness is one but its identity can be transferred from one to four and more.

And then on each will function differently. All the four pushed and pulled, tossed

and turned around and around by their passion went through innumerable life forms

-- In so many bodies they assumed their identity and dropped after their

deterioration. And projected in new one. Thus different sets of circumstances

happened to them. As long as there is ignorance so long world appearance cannotbe ceased. Because ignorance itself is the world.

"Holy Sire, last Vipaschit in his deer life, please tell us, wherever he went,

whatever he did?" asked the Princes.

Two of the four Vipaschitas traveled far and wide across the millions of

universes, galaxies and cosmos. One is still on his adventurous expedition. Earth,

ocean, air, space, time and panoramic views go on vibrating in his consciousness and

he has gone on so far he is out of my sight right now. Second one in his mightyexpedition went through heavy transmigrations and at present has become a deer

chewing grass; he is sitting in a nearby mountain innocently looking at the lush

green beauty of the nature."

"Holy Sire, could you tell us how did you know all this?"

Because I am Bramha. And entire sets of millions of universes, galaxies and

planets are projected upon my limbs. As you know where your hands, feet, mouth,

nose, eyes are very well, so do I know of all the universes and their minute details.

Wherever he went and whatever he did I know through my jnananetra, Mystic

Torch. I am ocean. In me all these waves of cosmic universes are riding andcolliding -- birthing, being sustained and being dissolved. Any event, any occurence

no matter how seriously secret it is, my vision is such a mighty torch which can

spot it instantly.

"Could you please bring him here and show us and could you do me a favor --

just enlighten him? So much he has suffered..Oh that poor man...!" said Prince

Rama.

"Dear Rama, this deer lives in the same mountain where you used to playhorse racing. Sitting outside his cave on the hilltop clad with vines, flowery bushes

he used to look at you and your friends. That is him." Soon Prince Rama looked at

his friends and asked, "Could you go and bring him here, please?"

Few of the friends immediately ran to the spot. He was sitting in his cave as

sage had said. He didn't object or run away upon seeing them but looked

relaxingly. When Sri Rama's friends petted his back and neck he stretched it.

Then they placed him on their lap; he was happy. And there was him.

When Sri Rama's friends entered the royal assembly holding the beautiful

deer in their arms -- whole assembly looked at him with great surprise. Theyplaced the deer in the middle with some green grass and he raced to the edge of

the stage, ran back, played, leaped and ate grass. Vasistha smiled.

"Holy Sire, please make him human and let him talk to us." Prince Rama

requested.

"Whoever is one's istadeva only his words touch the heart instantly.

Therefore I will invoke Lord Agni. He will do it." Then sage Vasistha sat cross-

legged, spine straight, sipped holy water thrice, closed his eyes and willed--"O Lord Agnideva, this is your devotee, help him, be kind to him, merciful,

sagacious as you are please do something for him."

Right there in a few minutes a flame rose in the middle of the assembly

without fuel, without wood. Just pure, clean red, high flame, man size flame. The

deer kept gazing. He was happy to see that fire. His subtle, supressed, deep

rooted vasana of devotion surfaced and tear drop of love came to his eyes.

Page 41: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

"Please remember his old time devotion and worship he did of you when he

was king. And remove his deerness, be kind and offer him human body and liberate

him." Saying thus to Lord Agni, sage said to Rama, "Now this deer will enter the

fire and then become human. See the miracle."

Deer was still gazing at the fire flame. He was so happy. Fire appeared as apool of bliss to him. Suddenly he stood still, watched the flame unwinkingly, and lo,

like an arrow shoots he leaped into the fire. His deer body disappeared and a

handsome young man came out of the flame. He was with golden complexion, long

hair, wearing ornaments, crown, white silk, rudraksa beads adorned his neck,

sacred thread adorned his chest. He was shining like fire. He was more illustrious

looking than all present in the assembly. He just walked out of the flame and stood

still and fire disappeared. King Dasaratha came up front and greeted him as he

would to another king. He offered him a golden seat with blue velvet cushion. He

calmly looked around and said--"If you don't mind I would like to meditate some time." Everyone's eyes

said, "Okay, fine, that is all right." He bowed down to sage Vasistha and looked

lovingly to Prince Rama, closed his eyes. Instantly all the events of different

lifetimes he had gone through flashed in his mind. He saw all the suffering he had

gone through ever since the life of king. How severe were his sufferings. How he

was in such hypnotic trance of different passionate identity. He opened his eyes.

Tears dripped and he ran falling at the feet of sage Vasistha. Laying flat at his

feet, he said, "O great donor of wisdom and new life, I offer my obeisance to you."

Sage Vasistha placed his hand on his head and said, "O King, lament not. Beseated on this chair. I will dispell the darkness of ignorance, and you will attain."

Then King stood up and offered his obeisance to King Dasaratha, "All glories to

you, O great one," he said. King Dasaratha embraced him and spoke, "For a long

time you had been traveling all over the world. Now it is time to come to the point

of rest." He offered his respect to sage Visvamitra, all sages and ministers, then

sat on his seat.

"Dear Bhaasa, have a drink please and tell the assembly what special and

extraordinary you saw in your travel expedition. Please consider it as you are still a

king sleeping on a gold king-size bed in your palace with your queen. And in dreamyou had fallen in the ditch, traveling a hazardous journey of Death Valley, desert

of Sahara, wilderness of Amazon river bank and amidst avalanches of Himalayas.

Driving camels in the burning hot sands of Arabia, racing a sailboat among Eskimos

in the freezing, cold icebergs. Hollering and yelling before dying in the Titanic

during that dangerous shipwreck. Or born in an Ethiopian papaur family lamenting

over the loss of your wife and kids' life after long starvation. It is just what sages

Page 42: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

have named it, avidya--the ignorance. Free elephant bound by iron chains fallen in

a ditch in expectation of enjoying with lady elephant. That is the condition of your

life. There is nothing in the world, O King, which is worth attaining. There is

nothing even in heavens, even in bramhalok for which spending time is worth use of

it. It is all like many colors shining in the sky. Sky is there but whatever is seen isillusion. Same way what you see, smell, touch, taste, hear and do are illusion like

colors and maps. But there is Truth too like sky. And that is atma. You will attain

this atma by the grace of my gurudev, right here in my royal assembly today." King

Dasaratha said.

"Dear King Dasaratha, looking at King Vipaschit I remember a similar case of

Batadhana. He too wandered for seven million years with a quest to know how far

is the earth and sky expanded. As long as lethargy towards the Self persists so

long there is no end to the world existence. When Bramha is realized, world

becomes Bramha. World is not a thing which is already created. The word'creation' is false, completely meaningless. It never was, never is, never will be

created. It just appears due to vibrations, due to flickering, due to spiritual

sleepiness. Nothing of the kind of world is ever made up. Self alone is. As sky and

emptiness are nondifferent so is world and Bramha. As stone rock is intense solid

mass, same way Self is mass of solid consciousness. What you call world is the

Self, the Bramha. As mountain is nothing else other than stones and clay, Bramha

is nothing else than Truth, alertness and bliss.

"As there is shine of gem and the gem is mass of shine, solid shine and outer

shine is just a fraction of it, same way Bramha is mass of alertness, wisdom, blissand longivity and dim rays are only appearing in the life of the world over. Only

those who are ignorants this world appears a mass, solid and fact. When you

become spiritually evolved it appears a fantasy island in the sky, washed away

painting by shower of rain or mirage. Atma is a chintamani gem, whomsoever

projects whatever desire near it, likewise it produces. As in dream innumerable

worlds appear but when you remember awaking state all become your own form, and

all hatred and attachments are wiped out. Same way to a bramhajnani the whole

world is his own form.

"This is auspicious, this is inauspicious; inauspicious should be abandoned, auspicious should be inserted in. As long as mind is entangled in such a cobweb of

spider's net so long soul wanders in world.

"Transcend these and will hard as rock with do or die spirit, biting teeth by

teeth that these all are illusion. And with same intensity hold on to atma which you

can experience in Mystica Trancensia. Whether this is a certain form of God,

Page 43: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

Goddess, light, remembrance in first stage, just grab it hard and boycott all

knowing them illusion. Then you have some possibility in your life."

"Dear Bhaasa, as King Dasaratha wished you to narrate the memories of your

adventure, we all are eager to hear it." Sage Visvamitra said.

"Holy Sires, His Majesty, Princes, queens, ministers and citizens, thank youfor your curiousity to hear my past lives. Although I suffered, tortured and fell in

doom of utter misfortune time and again still I did not feel them as suffering.

Because my desire to see new and new panoramic views and adventurous sights

were so intense. I have been through many births, many deaths, so many times

cursed, went to animal, bird, insect and tree species. Oh my God, it was all

horrible!

"Once I became a gigantic tree in Sequoia park. I stood there for a whole

one thousand years. Ever green, surrounded by flowers, fruits and leaves I stood

bearing rain, sun, cold and storm. When anyone would pluck my leaves, cut mybranches I would feel great pain. After leaving that body I became a yellow lotus

in a pond in the Himalayas. Then I became a bird in Hoshung mountain. After one

hundred years I became a fox. Killed by an elephant I became a deer in next life.

I was in that life so beautiful that angels and vidyadharas loved me very much and

used to pet my back, head and neck. After death I became a soft vine with

blooming small flowers. Goddesses and angels would come, touch me and smell my

perfume. After death I became wife of an angel. We enjoyed in our airplane flying

far and wide in the sky, landing on different planets, stars and lokas. I used to see

siddhas -- so powerful. I was enchanted by their life; so in next life I became oneof them.

"In my siddha life I traveled far and wide. I saw a beautiful lady, her name

was Tripur Sundari. There were innumerable universes on her limbs. I peeped and

found each of the cosmic eggs are populated by humans, celestials and animals,

mountains, rivers, trees, full of life -- Time, space and action intense. Like

reflections in the mirror I saw innumerable universes in her limbs.

"Hello Great Lady, who are you? What are all those on your body?" 'I am

suddha chitsakti (pure consciousness energy) and entire existence abides in my

limbs.' She said."Wow, how come Great Lady?"

'Why me, these whole universes are nothing but pure-consciousness as me

myself. Each person, place and things of the world are nothing else but pure

consciousness. That is one's pure nature. One who has come upon one's Self,

abides in one's Self. All these worlds appear to be spread upon them Self. Those

who are not them Self world appears separate and outside. The world is never

Page 44: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

made up. As the world of dream or fantasy island in sky it appears in the Self in

the atma. As waves are nothing else but water world too is nothing but pure

consciousness. This can be seen as such when you see through jnana-netra --

wisdom perspective.'

"Then I traveled to another universe. To my utter surprise I found there isno woman at all, all are men. From men, men are born and no girls. Then I moved

into another universe. There was neither sun, nor moon, nor fire, nor day nor night.

All, each and everyone was self-lit. Every being had a whole mechanical process of

world set in their body. I moved into a new universe where I found people are born

of sky collectively and collectively they die and disappear in sky. There is no

individual nor social death nor birth. Neither there is hospital nor cemetery.

Nobody is parent.

"In next world as I moved I saw all beings are the same. No celestials, no

demons, no sastras, no suffering, nothing. All were sitting on the bank of a river."In one of the cosmic eggs I saw Ksirodak ocean was being churned through

Mount Mander. One side was the celestials and Lord Visnu on the hilltop, another

side were daityas. Mountain was full of gems and jewels. Naga was being used as a

rope. Great sound! Great action!

"I moved to another universe and there humans were flying in the sky.

Celestials were walking on the earth. I moved to another universe and saw a

garden of kalpavriksas. It belonged to a nymph Madanika. I was tired, I slept.

Suddenly I became startled, the nymph woke me up at midnight. "Hello Great

Lady, why did you wake me up?" 'Because,' she replied hurriedly, 'moon is going torise soon and Chandrakant mani gem will melt and flow like a river, may even flood.

I don't want you flowing away in its current.' While she was explaining to me the

gushing stream came washing everything in her way. She took me and flew in the

sky and set me on the bank of Akasaganga. I sat there for seven years, then I

moved to another cosmic egg.

"There is no earth, river, mountain or city which I have not seen. No such

action which I have not done. I enjoyed all pleasures a human body can enjoy or

celestial body can enjoy. There is no suffering which I have not suffered even in

hells. I explored all caverns and secret places. By the special grace of Lord Agni, equipped with special powers I went further, further and further on. Even

exhausted and deadly tired I still went on. At last I discovered, all universes are

illusion. Even not existing, without having any existence still it bothers and makes

one suffer. As a child sees a ghost in his own shadow the world seems due to

misthinking and can disappear by correct thinking.

Page 45: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

"I went into a universe -- there was vast sky. I fell with full force on the

earth. I slept deeply...I saw a dream and in that dream I saw this world of yours.

Again I was in my old business. I traveled and traveled and traveled. I saw the

most wonderful, astounding and miraculous places, sights and people, but the only

great surprising puzzle I am not able to solve is that the dream world appears tooreal. As like wakefulness. And dream body appears as if awakened into it. Entire

world is illusion, being illusion it resembles fact and reality. It is upon this I am

dumbfounded.

"I visited another cosmic egg. I saw the most mysterious places,

undiscovered before. They are as unaccessible as dream world cannot be explored

while being awake. After I had completed the journey into its panoramic places I

wanted to settle down somewhere. Then I found one day suddenly a creature like

mountain was dancing. His dance became ferocious. He was happy and as is the

law, happiness expands. He became expanded far and wide. He took a leap and hebegan dancing fiercefully in the sky. He expanded and expanded and expanded

covering the entire sky. He was so happy he could accommodate it. It exploded

and he died. His corpse still expanded far beyond horizons, rivers and mountains.

It began to fall on the earth. I prayed--

"O Lord Agni, please help me, save me, protect me." And there was my lord

seated in his green airplane shaped in a parrot. He took me quickly into his airplane

and flew into the sky faster than the speed of the falling corpse. From up above

the sky we saw that great fall of earth covering corpse. It quaked and shook the

whole earth. All great mountains and rivers fell under it and sank inside theearth's crust. All trees, men, women, demons were crushed and dead. His limbs

fell even from the cosmos.

'My lord, what is this?' I asked the lord. 'Be quiet, I will tell you later.'

Lord Agni replied.

"Then innumerable celestials stood in the sky and began to discuss why this

devastation had happened. They saw all the continents and dvipes have been

covered and crushed under the weight of that large corpse. Many of his limbs fell

out of the sphere of the planet. At last they decided to pray and assembling

together meditatively prayed--'O Goddess, O Chandike, O Mother Divine, we have come to your refuge.

Please protect us.' Thus they prayed.

"Then Mother Tripursundari illuminating the entire sky came from the east.

Her thousands of ganas following her. They appeared to be like a river of fire with

huge flames. Goddess was miles tall and wide. Her light was stronger than fire,

sun and moon. She was holding so many weapons.

Page 46: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

Vivekananda Page 46

'Fear not, I will protect you.' Her voice echoed like thunder of clouds. Then

Tripursundari inhaled deeply and exhaled. As if wind and storm blew all the blood

of the corpse was dried up. Through her glance another dark blue goddess

Mahakali appeared. She danced ferociously all over the earth. Through big heavy

kicks the corpse flattened and disappeared into the earth.

"Dear sir, you said all beings were crushed and died under the weight of the

corpse. Then you said they stood in the sky and prayed?"

"Dear Prince, all those who fell underneath his body, they definitely died,

but there were those who fell in between his limbs and they were saved. In

between his legs, hands, fingers, sides of the neck or in hollow places of limbs,

whoever came they were saved. Lamenting upon the destruction of their ancestral

lands and buildings, they cried--'Oh, our beautiful park where we used to sit and gossip with our friends and

family is destroyed. Oh, my yajna arena, oh our temple, our schools, our pond,

playgrounds!' Entire continents and oceans were destroyed collectively. This much

ruin was not seen before even in great world wars and similar destructions.

"At last all celestials approached to Bramhaaji and he by his will gave birth

to new earth and people were populated again.

"Now Lord Agni spoke to me while still flying in the sky. 'Listen to me, O

Vipaschit, carefully!' he said.

'There is a cosmic sky of mass of pure consciousness. It is always still, calmand dense in sat-chid-aanand. It became vibrant. Then conscious sensitivity

became split and identified himself as chidanu (split atom of consciousness). This

split atom wished to enjoy as before, but since it is split it developed now five

senses of perceptions. As in your bedroom while reading an interesting book your

eyes feel closing in lethargy, same way split atom out of lethargy to be awakened in

its essential reality in which it is inseparable part of sky of pure consciousness

Bramha, it begins to dream. Then prana (vital energy) and mind takes over all his

movements. Their five objects of sensory perceptions became inseparable part of

his mind. Mind fails to stay on its own. Imbibed with these alluring fascinations ofobjects of senses soul moves on. He is born caged in five elemental body.

Identifies himself belonging to a mother, father, society, country, Age and

civilization. All these related thoughts packed and compact he moves on in life.

Life is nothing except taking care of the outer cage which is nothing more than

skeleton, flesh, veins of blood. The only reason to take care of such dirty and

useless body is it somehow became the means of his so-called joys of five

Page 47: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

perceptional images of sensations. Because of those he is trapped in his cage

which has blocked all avenues of higher understandings.

'A soul caged in such a body identifying himself as daitya (demon) was

roaming on the face of the globe. He rested in a green grass and flower tree clad

garden. He ate fruit, then he looked around and saw a cottage. Out of mischievousplay with motive of hand exercise he smashed the cottage and rejoicingly roared.

Nearby was a sage sitting near the bushes at the pond ghat. His meditation was

disturbed. He opened his eyes, saw his cottage destroyed and this wicked, red-

eyed demon was approaching him.

'Wicked monster, what joy you got with such a cheap entertainment of yours

which afflicts others? But I know you cannot understand it and unless and until

you understand, I find you a harmful creature for all beings. And I don't let that

happen. Human life is so precious. The only door to higher understanding, and you

destroy it or their belongings which help them for their future growth. You dirtybastard, so enormous, large and tall in your body, pig-like fat are your hands, go by

my curse you are turned into a mosquito.'

'Immediately his huge body turned into ashes. His soul stood aloof in the

sky. Soon his mind became entwined with passion of sage's curse and it took it

over fully. He became fully obsessed. Then as sprout bursts from seed, likewise

from his mind a hard intoxication of passion of mosquitoism sprang, and he believed

he is mosquito. There was no way left to survive other than mosquito identity.

Such was his destiny. He assumed the body of a mosquito. His life span became

twenty-one daysd. He was born in rotten water in a dirty puddle near a garbagedumping place. And surrounded by his brothers, sisters, wife and kids flew around

resounding, 'bhavan bhavan bhan...bhan...'

'His family's songs of bhavan bhavan echoed all around. He was stronger and

more powerful mosquito than all. He married most beautiful lady mosquito and

lived like a hero. Every night they would go out in cities and suck the blood of

people. The day they spent in a dirty pond, green grass nearby, lazily flying around.

Ever since he was two days old he married and made love to his newly wedded wife

every ten or twelve minutes. Thus he had a whole army of kids. And resounding

the place they roamed around like a king wishing to remain alive for millions ofyears as long as earth, sun and moon live.'

"Dear sir, the souls who receive bodies are directly coming from Bramhaaji

or from their series of past lives?"

Page 48: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

Vivekananda Page 48

"Dear Prince, those to whom world appears without samskaras (reproductive

impressions of past actions) they are from Bramhaaji. And those who have latent

samskaras and see the world through spectacle of samskaras are coming from

their past series of transmigration."

'Once that mosquito was roaming around in the green grass lawn. Flowers

were blooming. Suddenly some terrible smell came from a nearby dirty ditch. He

was attracted and so fascinated that he could not stop himself. He rushed and his

family followed. He was in a hurry to enjoy the smell so much that his family

couldn't fly that fast to be with him. While they came slowly they saw a horrible

scene. Chased by a cruel hunter a deer came leaping and running to save his life.

No sooner then they could be careful, the deer leapt and his foot landed straight

upon the hero mosquito. At his last moment he saw the face of the deer and his

foot falling on him. In great passion of fear his soul imprinted the form of deer, and in next life he became a deer. When his wife, kids and family members

arrived, all they saw was terribly crushed and blood smeared clay. His limbs

broken in pieces, they all cried, lamented, and adjusted to live without him.

'At the time of death mosquito became filled with fear and shock and

therefore with one concentrated passion and will he looked at the deer, therefore

in next life he became a deer in the forest. Many years he spent roaming and

chewing green grass and leaves. Once he saw a hunter who pierced him by a sharp

arrow. He fell on the earth bleeding. Hunter came close and pulled the arrow out

and at that time he died. Looking at the hunter with concentrated fear he becamea hunter in next life. Holding bow and arrow he moved forest to forest in search

of birds and animals he can use to sell and for food for his family.

'Once he was roaming in the forest. He became thirsty and hungry. He

didn't find anyone to shoot as was usual everyday. He saw a hermitage. A sage

welcomed him, gave fruit and roots to eat and water to drink. Then looking at his

horrible aura he said--

'Oh poor one, since when have you started this cruel act. Violence and

murder of innocent animals will only lead you to hellish life, pain and misery. For

which momentary satisfaction of belly you are doing this henious act that is asflashy and momentary as lightening in midst of thhe cloud. On lotus leaf water can

stay but for how long? It slips any moment. Water put in your palm leaks, same

way time of life is leaking everyday. With these joys of life too leaks away and

evaporates away. Youth, red letter days, golden nights, honey suckle days are just

evaporating away. Joys don't give any peace. If you wish peace try for

enlightenment.

Page 49: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

Vivekananda Page 49

'Not working hard for enlightenment, wasting one's time and energy in cruel

acts, in violence, is throwing an axe on one's own legs. Why do you chop off your

own leg, little man? Why are you sowing seed of poison for your own destruction?'

said the holy sage.

'The hunter realized what great blunders he had been doing all his life. Hethrew away his weapons, fell down at the feet of holy man and said--

'Thank you, thank you my lord, for your sacred teaching. Tell unto me the

way I can cross the sea of world's misery?'

'Focusing the mind onto luminous, sacred light of Bramha is shama.

Withdrawing the senses from rushing down to their objects is dama. This is also

known as mouna. Doing this practice intellect becomes purified. In pure

intelligence wisdom of the Self arises. And illusion of world appearance fades

away.' Sage explained him.

'The hunter stood up and walked out. He settled in a nearby grove andbegan doing tapas. He kept senses under control. Whatever satvik food came

unasked he ate. He observed silence from all outer actions which creates

restlessness. Some time passed in such tapas. Then his thinking principles became

pure. One day he came to the sage who was now his guru and offered his

obeisance.

'My lord, how the sights enter in inner recesses of my mind and how inner

world becomes outer world in the dream?' He asked after he was asked to be

seated and to speak.

'Hunter, very deep is the question you have asked me. I asked the samequestion long before from Ganapati and what I learned from him I will tell you--

'Once I sat in lotus posture. I withdrew my senses and placed them in my

mind and mind in my intellect and intellect in puryastaka. Then I took out

puryastaka and placed in the sky. I practiced whenever I wanted to get out of my

body I got out and when I wanted to enter in I would enter in the body. This way I

was playing around for some time.

'One afternoon when I was playing in such a way, I came out of my body and

began wandering in the sky around my hermitage, I saw a passenger had come and

was sleeping under a tree on the green grass near the pond. His breath was goingin, coming out. I thought...let me enter inside this man and see what is in there.

'Then as a camel would be dozing and a fly enters in, same way I entered. I

saw there all the blood vessels and veins, his bones, bone marrow, intestines.

seminal/urinal tubes. Then I saw his liver, lungs, brain, heart etc. Then I saw his

subconscious mind. Whatever was suppressed: sex, anger, jealousy, greed,

deception, ego, all packed and compact darkness and so many vasanas and samkaras

Page 50: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

of many past lives. I felt very disgusted, sorry and nauseactic. And when I wanted

to return I saw his astral body. In that there was a lotus shape shining object

which was vibrating and pulsating. That was samvit sakti in hridayakas. That was

the flame of consciousness. The existence of all objects. That was soul. I leaped

into that lotus and became one with the flame of light of life. Then to my uttersurprise I saw entire universe in there. Many galaxies, worlds, civilizations, so

much that can make volumes. I wondered how come world is appearing inside. Then

soon I knew that is all what he has perceived throughout life in the world outside.

Samskaras have been imprinted and recorded like cassette tape or VCR. And it is

this impression recorded VCR of life after lives which is played in this life with

every freedom to change it completely. His samskaras printed in causal body

becomes outer world as dream in astral body. Astral body takes over when the

senses and physical body suspends. It suspends either through sleep or conscious

relaxation or hypnotism. Whatever samskaras are hidden deep down reflects asreality in dream. As walking looks true, dreaming also looks true. Long lasting

perceptions are waking. Short lasting perceptions are dreaming. But by nature

both are equal and similar. That which was his dream -- to me they seem as if in

awaking. And what was waking to me was dream to him. By lethargy dream comes.

When dream comes it comes always as true and real. Because dream is dream only

when one is awake. But during dreaming it is still like waking. Therefore when

some reality while appearing real can still be dreaming then waking which is waking

only in its waking time can be possibly dreaming in greater reality. That is why the

perception of waking as reality is a lethargy. Both are similar or equal in the eyesof advance Realty or Absolute Truth. Due to lethargy in connection with Advanced

Reality prana took over. When prana combined with heart (chitta) moved in

vibrations then soul, ego, intellect and mind came into existence. The same

sensations when become vibrant and vibrates outside then turns into waking state

of life and expands into world. When five senses of perceptions, five senses of

actions and four thinking principles, when these fourteen involve into their objects.

It is known as waking. When sensations of chitta (heart) by the faults of lethargy

or sleep turns inward and vibrates inside, in the astral body, then this is known as

dreaming. Then that time that alone appears as waking reality. When thesensational vibrations turns and directs itself towards Pure Self and becomes free

and devoid from vibrations of external sensations, then neither waking nor

dreaming but nirvikalpa advance bramhic reality shines effulgently.

'I saw and I found world is nothing but vibrant sensationalism. It is false

imagination. Hunter, drop the world feeling sensations and just be your Self.'

Now back to our story--

'When I saw inside the man all his junk yard of dream and awake garbage

then I desired to see his deep sleep too. Then intelligence said--Sleep is the name

of delusion or dissolution where seer, seen and sight are dissolved into inertia.

Then I will have to dissolve my I-ness. But then who will see and know. If I do notlet go of my seerhood then who will know the sleep and how it will be known. Then

my intellect said--Sleep is none else except a state where heart (chitta) sensation

doesn't vibrate. Then I stopped heart sensations. Then I saw the sleep. There

was no I, you, sound, good, bad, waking, dreaming and image of sleep. Free from all

imagination the heart alone abides there.'

"How did you see sleep which has no seer, seen and sight?"

'The Self which perceives all is always there. Whatever reflections areprojected upon it that knowledge is gained. When you awake from deep dreamless

sleep you may have found yourself saying, "I slept wonderfully." Who perceives,

who compares, who knows, that same old guy is there. Being unanimous with him I

saw.

'Then I wanted to see Turiya state. It is witness of waking, dreaming and

sleeping and in nature it is like deep sleep. But instead of inert tamas it is pure,

intense awareness. Turiya places you in Bramha. In four stages I saw everchanging

display of maya with different vibrations. But Bramha is established in itself.

There is neither waking nor dreaming nor sleeping nor even turiya. All these fourhappen in vibrant sensations.

'Then I came out of the body. I saw what was inside same was outside.

From Turiya I came to sleep to dream to awake to soul to causal, to astral, to

physical and the worlds of samskaras and vasanas. And I saw outside then went in

again. This time I didn't unify my sensation with his, as before. Therefore when I

entered in our sensations were to different things. And I saw two universes. One

in his sensations another in mine. Through the basis of the Self as sensation went

on vibrating likewise universe began appearing. And his dream began appearing to

me as alive as waking. In the mirror as if two reflections are reflecting I felt twoworlds going on simultaneously. Then I discovered universe is only desire

fabricated, will woven, and void. Everyone's desire is different and therefore

everyone's world is different. As will began to grow and develop that quality and

standard of world begins to be visualized. There is no solid cause of world's

existence.

Page 52: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

Vivekananda Page 52

'For eight minutes I confronted two existences, two cosmic eggs. Then I

combined my mind with his. Then as milk and water become one likewise sights of

double universes became one and the same. Then I began seeing one world. I saw

the earth, stars, sun, moon and all people acting in various ways. Then after a

short time modification of mind moved towards sleep and expansion of world beganto merge in its origin as at dusk the rays of the sun merge in the sun itself. When

the world merged in the mind senses became still and silent.'

'My lord, how does sleep come?' Hunter asked.

'When someone eats food, the heaviness of the content stays upon the

subtle nerves called samvahi. Then nerves of waking stand still, then prana too

stands still. Mind too. That name is sleep. When mind vibrates waking comes

again.'

"Holy Sire, mind moves by prana then what is the structure of mind? Thenisn't it nonexistent?"

'Spiritually speaking even this physical body has no existence then what to

speak of mind. As a mountain appears in dream so does this body appear. There is

no basis in dream so does this body appear. There is no basis, no foundation, no

cause of anything world is false illusion. Only Bramha is existing in itself. This is

the experience of knower of the Self. I don't know about the ignorant's

experience. Rising sun does not know and perhaps he never knows the experience

of an owl. And owl does not know the experience of sun. What difference does itmake? If owl does not care to rise he has destiny of suffering. It is Bramha alone

in whom all of us have slept and imagining. As mind imagines likewise body, senses

and world appears. Bramha is almighty. When mind flickers then falseness and

truth of an object is perceived. When consciousness associates with mind then

vital energy (prana) rises. Mind accepts it and here he is coronated as soul. If

mind is king prana is queen. By no other way can mind be evaporated except

Bramhajnana. Without mind being pacified no welfare of life is possible. There

are two ways to pacify the mind.

Suspend the modification of mind, and,Reduce the vibration of prana.

By stopping the pranic vibration mind stops. When prana agitates, mind goes

restless. In mental unrest soul burns in fire of three agonies. Mind has two

status: One is jnana another is ignorance. Ignorance is caused by sleepiness. That

is connected with eating too much or over and over. Because weight stays on the

nadis, and passage of vital energy is blocked. Then mind too becomes inert. That

Page 53: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

is sleep. These are the same nerves through which life energy flows and in the end

soul leaves the body. When these nerves are pressed by passion through food mind

drops off sleep comes in. Then in a few hours it wakes up again. As seed sprouts

on soil in proper time, he rises up again from sleep out of samskaras.

'Hunter, when I entered inside him through prana passage I found the pathwas blocked further. Nerves pressured by food had stopped the energy flow.

Food had not yet digested fully so sleep was continuing. After sometime when

some of the food he had eaten got digested then his prana started waking up,

modification of his mind too got their inertness loosening. When prana woke up

then the universe too woke up. When I saw the beautiful world with wonderful

Effel Tower, Buckingham Palace and Tajamahal, panoramic sights of Sequoia

National Park and New York, Jaipur, Bombay, London and picturesque Himalayas.

Then I forgot my former memories of physical life and I got married with a

beautiful soft tongued, amiable girl and started living my family life. Soonrelatives expanded, business prospered and I had no time for anything else. I was

always busy, more than Rockefeller and Morgan. Any person coming to me talking

spiritual subjects seemed to me as lunatic or con man trying to squeeze some

money from me. And I had become careful of him or her. Year after year after

years passed. I had many children. They grew up, took over my business, we

became old.

'After many years I died, but only to be born again and again and yet again.

Millions of years I spent enjoying so-called enjoyments of senses. Again and again

I was born in richest nations of the world. Then the time came of a dissolution.Famine began. It continued for a long long time; all things burned up. Then rain

began, torrents of rain, as thick as an elephant's trunk. Rivers flooded, dams

broke, water ran through the cities. A fast current of water swept my Fifth

Avenue, New York City residence. My huge cloth store, my restuarant, my

auditorium became filled with water. I called and called to the authorities but no

response. They had already flooded. My dancers, workers, manager were flowing

in the water. I saw my wife screaming, my boys and girls too coming. We held to

the building, the Empire State Building and we managed to climb up. Oh, my wife

and two daughters and one son made it up. We began climbing, hundreds andthousands more were crawling up like ants but water level too was rising as fast as

we were rushing upward. We made it to the 100th floor, then suddenly to our

utter distress and heartbreak the building broke and collapsed in the water. We

all began to flow in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The entire city was

devastated. Huge waves were rising, lifting my family up then dashing us down.

Ebbs and tides. One such violent dash of wave killed my wife and daughters too.

Page 54: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

Vivekananda Page 54

Oh, my son too died in front of my eyes. My head was reeling. Much salt water

had gone in my system -- violent rolling, pitching and swelling waves were going on.

Hopelessness, helplessness and utter sorrow, vast shoreless ocean of suffering was

there to go on with. On top of this death was coming any moment.

'Then suddenly I remembered, I shouted, 'Sita Rama, Sita Rama, SitaRama.' And instantaneously I remembered my former body, the life next in which

I truly exist -- where my body is still awaiting.

'As soon as I remembered my former body a great peace descended upon

me. Then although my body was still going up above and only to be dashed down,

but still my heart became oriented in inner pure consciousness. All my fear,

attachment, aversion and pain of deaths of my family vanished away. I saw water

level rose up to Mars, Jupiter, Pole Star, heavens and entire cosmic egg.

Vidyadhar, gandharva, yaksas and siddhas all were floating like me. Then I saw

Indra, Kuber and Bramhaaji; they were also floating in the waters of devastation. There was Yama, Aryamaa and Daityas also in pitiable condition. No one was able

to save himself. Those who strived for worldly pleasures are very light weight.

Whom people worship and pray and for whom they make churches, temples,

mosques and synagogues they too were sinking and piteously dieing in delusion

water.'

'Holy Sire, you said Indra, Kuber, Varuna and Bramhaaji were floating and

sinking in the delusion ocean. Why they did not disappear?' Hunter asked.

'Because this delusion was not gradual but a sudden one. The water was

devastating and subtle and gross both, therefore becoming invisible won't help.Being invisible where they will go and stay water was there too. And after all,

don't you figure it was dreamish illusion. Doesn't follow any law,' said the sage.

'If it was illusion then why to mention in so many details?'

'Because you too are in the same illusion. All, everyone, all over people are in

the same illusion, but they are not recognizing it, not coming to their senses. That

is ultimate thick-headedness. To soften your iron heads I am talking of illusion.

Catch the juncture of illusion and reality. That is why I am going in details.'

'Okay Holy Sire, I bow down to you, please forgive me, forgive me. I am at

your feet, your disciple. Please begin. Do tell me what happened further.' Hunterbegged.

'I continued being tossed, turned, dashed, reeled, sunk and hurled around

and around in that shoreless water for hundreds of years, but I did not suffer. At

last came the end of delusion. Water level went down and down. I held on to a hill.

I spent some time waiting. Soon water dried up. There was mud all over in which

ancient remnants of life were seen stuck in mud. I came to a cave, cleaned it up

Page 55: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

and made a place to rest. As soon as I closed my eyes and slept I entered in a

dream--

'I saw again the sight of devastation of the world. Famine, drought, rain,

flood, deaths, floating and sinking, all that stuff again. Then water dried up and I

saw new world, new civilization has started. I saw myself a sixteen year old, youngboy living in nice home with my parents, brothers and sisters. Then I grew up,

married, worked in business offices and government offices. I saved up a bank

balance and then started my own business. It grew well. We became very wealthy.

I turned into a richest man of the state. I became Attorney General, then I took

charge and became mayor, then Governor, then Vice President, then President of

America.

'After a few years I was retired, then although there were hundreds of

invitations of lecture tours for fifty thousand dollars a lecture and acting in a

movies, still I decided to search for Truth. I visited different holy men of manysources. Toaists, Zen, Sufis, Hasid mystics, Vedantins and Hare Krishna devotees -

-all I met, went to their places and invited them in my residence. I frequently

presided in their meetings in famous conventional centers and offered large

donations to their missions -- individually as well as organizationally. The sky

godders and monothiestics created much noise. They criticized me in big headings

in newspapers, radio and television but I had determined to not retreat from the

most auspicious path I had taken. When elephant walks dogs bark, likewise I did

not care, all these people I knew they play secular and liberal only to drag others in

their trap. They are not just hypocrites but seriously ignorant. But ignorant isoften pardonable but these jackasses have as if vowed to not let any good

understanding pass through their brain.

'Not caring for innumerable opposition I went to Rome, then to Athens,

Cairo, then my most loved and well dreamt country India. ILCC had sent me a copy

of Swami Shyam's wonderful book "Yoga of Traveling", so I arrived in India in the

winter and began traveling to sacred places. The government offices, the

politicians came on the way to visit me or use me for their own purposes, but my

secretary handled them wisely and not one of them was able to waste a single hour

of my time. Instead we enjoyed the company of holy men. I rented entire hotels inRishikesh, Haradwar and I studied Swamiji Prem's Upanisadas, Yoga Sutras and

Gita and practiced Prem meditation. Then came to Mathura, Vrindaban and took

bath each dawn in holy Yamuna and read "Lord of Love", "Lord of Bliss", "Lord of

Beauty" and I experienced Krishna lila so deeply that my body, mind, soul, all

evaporated -- I became part of Krishna lila. I went to Ayodhya and taking dip in

holy Sarayu river every morning and visiting Kanak Bhavan and newly built Lord

Page 56: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

Rama's birthplace temple I read Swami Prem's Holy Ramayana and the meaning of

life (Yoga Vasistha).

'Ayodhya, the sweet small town of Ayodhya became so dear to my heart

that I bought land, constructed a huge ashram and made it a center of Bramhajana

Therapy of Swami Prem's style. Therapy worked so well on people that soonhundreds started coming daily from all over the world. It was a great success.

'Then I invited Swami Shyam. He arrived; I arranged on the top floor a

room overlooking holy Sarayu. That evening I introduced him to my audience. He

gave a wonderful discourse. All were thrilled, many became entranced. We

showered flowers on him and applauded. Music echoed, passages of his Holy

Ramayana were read, then we asked questions. Answering one of our questions, he

said--

'Whenever you become deeply alert, conscious and alive then that prajnanam

is Bramha. You live this prajnanam ceaselessly identified with it as one with it thenyou are Bramha. Then whosoever you see, your eyes penetrate in and through each

and everyone -- See through, beyond physical, astral and causal, you see pure atma.

To you then all these become Bramha. Sarvam khalvidam Bramha. Then entire

world, every atom, person, place and thing all are Bramha. Everybody's outer body

is nothing but cage, covering, clothing and inside there is Bramha. Bramha is more

to it. Even outer coverings are Bramha seen in different perspective, woven and

fabricated by threads of three gunas and five elements. Aham Bramhasmi,

Tatvamasi, Prajnaanam Bramha and Sarvam Khalvidam Bramha.' Thus spoke Swami

Prem.'Those words of his entered a cozy corner of my heart and I became

awakened in my pure existence. Then I saw all are my desire-woven and will-

fabrication. None is nondifferent from me. I am the sage of the hillside. I am in

dream of that sleeping person. I became fully awakened and I found it was all that

man's dream. Then I thought...Oh my! I regreted, I suffered unnecessarily. Now

I must get out of the mind of this guy and enter in my own body. Then I thought

world is the body of the guy. But He is the cosmic man Virat in whose dream the

world abides. But that guy is lethargic and forgetful of his cosmic form and cosmic

nature. And therefore as is our body so is another body, cosmic of course, in hisdream. Then how to know that cosmic so that I could get out of his mind.

'Hunter, considering thus I set myself in lotus poise and three locks in

coccyzeal, navel and throat. Then balancing the breaths I visualized the cosmic

form (virat) as described in Swami Prem's Lovetrance World Journal, Volume 31,

The Role of Prem Meditation. Then I saw his universal form. I went all the way

where his first thought emanated. I became united with that and with the passage

Page 57: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

of breath I came out from his nostril. Still as a soul caged in astral and causal

bodies I moved around. I saw my former body is still sitting in pyramidical pose,

eyes closed gone deep in meditation. I entered in the body through one of the

senses. Settled in the dorsal plexus, anahat chakra, as returned to one's own

home. Then I opened my eyes. I saw a dozen of my disciples are sitting. When Italked with them then to my utter surprise I found all of them are usual and happy.

I was more shocked when I discovered only forty-eight minutes have passed since

I sat in my pyramidical pose and in there I spent billions of years. Oh my! What a

wonder of illusion! I mumbled. I could not stop my curiosity, I looked far and wide

and I saw that man was still sleeping. And I still felt like...let's see what's going on

in there. And I did enter. I found the former cosmic day in which I'd come before

had gone and passed. It is now a history recorded in scripture, in puranas. New

kalpa (cosmic day and night of about eight billion years) I traveled and visited the

places of my parents and relatives but only archeological excavations made itpossible and I was happy to see the ancient remainings which were of my parents,

forefathers, sons, daughters, friends as well as myself. It was available only up to

my youth indicating mysteriously-disappeared.

'Then I developed curiosity to see more past civilizations which I had

personally encountered. I moved around all over the globe and saw those

presidents and prime ministers of different nations in the history record. While I

was exploring the world I saw now the end of the world is fast approaching. Again

the delusion time is up. Twelve suns rose and began to burn entire universe. Fire is

burning, people are suffering, I too fell in the fire but I did not suffer.

As if someone is facing greatest disaster, even his body is being chopped off

in dream but suddenly he woke-up during the dream, then as to him sufferings do

not reach. Same way, no affliction reached me no matter how severe and heart

rending they were. Because I knew myself the guy of waking reality.

'To me world and its destruction was illusion. Although I was acting like

everyone else who were suffering, living too like them, but heart was at peace and

all around there was dance of misery.'Then rain poured in, forty-nine marutas showered with elephant trunk thick

current. I was also being dragged, tossed and turned around and around but I

never forgot I belong to the waking reality. So no problem ever touched me. I

remain established on the idea that this is a dream and I am part of waking reality.

And this kept me stable, firm and alive in the dimension of reality where no

suffering, no pain, no death can ever enter or touch.

Page 58: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

'Of course, I was being tossed and turned around and around like everybody

else. Nature is very communist. Nature is not a grand mom nor a God who can

come rushing down all the way to help. But is very equalist. It treats all alike. So

I was also rising and falling with waves of delusion's ocean. The only difference

was all others were panicking, crying, yelling and shouting but I was not. I was justgoing through all what came upon me. No resistance, no grudges, no resentment. I

responded but the pain of body was not being able to reach me. I was completely

established in my remembrance of former body. Then I thought world is illusion,

just a dream, why I feel interested in it, what purpose shall I accomplish by paying

any attention to it? Let me get out of this place.'

'Holy Sire, what was real and what was unreal in that world. That world was

in his projection of mind, in his imagination and thought and fantasy. He knew the

world, his very consciousness of the world, being aware of the world was outer

symptom of this lethargy in context to atman. But you being fully awake saw hisdream, all what was going on in his mind -- Please tell me from where did mountain,

river, earth, fire, water, ocean and devastation come in his chitta (heart)? From

where and how were they accommodated? Please explain me this?' Hunter asked.

'You too see in your dream a totally new world with all mountains and rivers

and sky. It is like that.'

'But when I see it is due to obscuring energy of lethargy of waking state,

but you saw it inside that person while you were fully awake, Sir?'

'Hunter, when I saw first it was when I had forgotten mySelf and second

time when I saw I was aware of my Self. How did that happen -- I will explain it toyou--

'Person, place or thing which appears without cause that is usually false.

The world I saw in his dream first time was seen in the forgetfulness of myself.

When I saw for the second time was with knowledge of mySelf. That which has

basis of cause is true. That which appears without basis of cause is false. The

universe and bramhand I saw in dream was without cause. There are two kinds of

cause--

(1) nimitta karan or instrumental cause -- such as the cause of jar is potter.

Potter made it.(2) samavaay karan or transformational cause -- such as the cause of jar is

clay. Clay became jar.

Cause is that which causes things to happen in above mentioned both ways.

But atma is not the cause of the world in either way. Atma is nondual therefore it

cannot be instrumental cause. And because it cannot be changed. It is never

changing. Never becomes something else therefore cannot be transformational

Page 59: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

Vivekananda Page 59

cause. Therefore atma cannot be. It never is the cause of the world. Therefore

world is appearing without any cause therefore it is only illusion. The illusion of the

world reflects and projects upon atma therefore world in its original form is atma

alone.

'Before world came into existence nondual Self alone existed. By vibrantsensation occurrence world is appearing as truly happened. But in fact it has never

happened. As in sunrays water reflects then the rays itself appear as water --

looks like blue water filled river -- a mirage in hottest desert, same way the world

is just reflection upon the atma. Atma itself appears to nonenlightened as the

world. There was neither body nor heart, nor earth, water, fire, air or sky.

Neither creation nor dissolution. The world which appears to you as meaning of

words and forms and events that is only reflection upon the mirror of atma -- the

pure consciousness. If you too wish to experience the grand, wonderful atma, the

pure consciousness, then relinquish all sensational vibrations and passionateclingings from the face of mind. Then relinquish the mind, the four fold goblin too.

Mind goblin has four faces which he constantly changes: they are intellect

monster, heart vampire and ego demon. Mind goblin constantly looms and lurks in

these faces and terrorizes the whole life and keeps it off from the track of

Bramhajnan. Transcending these dungenous territories you then whatever is left

to be found is the Self, atma universalizing into Bramha. You slip into it, dwell into

it. Live it and you will become bliss-filled, love-filled, wisdom-filled immortal.

'Hunter, this Bramha is very subtle. Subtler than even sky. Sky is too gross

as like Himalaya mountain is too gross to a subtlest atom. The absolute subtlety ofatma is that there is no ripple of sensation, no vibration of single thought is ever

possible there. It is spotlessly clean, transparent and divine. As in the time --

moment, second, minute, hour, day, week, month, year, yuga, manvantar and kalpa

(cosmic day of four billion years) are identified so is atma. In atma this world of

multi names, forms and sounds reflects. In one seed, leaf, twig, branch, trunk,

flower, fruit etc. multiplies. They are and at the same time they are not one with

the seed, same way world in the atma is and is not too. One at all nondual.

Whatever appears different and divorced from atma know them all as illusion.

'In atma no world has ever been built or created, that atma is your truenature. It is pure and experienceable only. Neither there is birth nor death. That

is crystal clean chidakas. Hunter, you just be established in that. Doing so your all

miseries will be finished.

'Holy Sire, scriptures say all beings are born, live and die according to their

fruits of action while other scriptures say no fruit is involved. Birth is just

accidental. Which one is correct?' Hunter asked.

Page 60: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

7/31/2019 Yoga Vasistha Section 4

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/yoga-vasistha-section-4 60/78

Vivekananda Page 60

'Hunter, in the beginning when Bramhajii was born there was no fruit

involved. It was simply matter of shifting one's identity -- from Absolute Bramha

to Bramhaaji. And since all beings are born of Bramhaaji, no matter how and what

are the different causes for them are irrelevant. Because Bramhaaji's birth is

causeless, therefore he is Bramha and since all beings are Bramhaaji'smanifestation so they too are same Bramha. Lord Shiva, Lord Visnu, Lordess

Mahamaya are not touched by ignorance. They are pure vidyaa. The rest are

trapped by ignorance by plunging into work. They need to rise above through same

weight of heavy duty work --then they will attain. The world of dream in the

beginning appears to have come up without fruit and action and later it seems to be

going on through action and fruit. Same is with this material world. Lord Visnu,

Shiva, Mahamaya appear as souls with bodies and karmas but they are Bramha, all

clean and clear.

'In dream it is the seer who appears as scene and sights and seen andinnumerable activities but nothing of them ever has occurred nor happening and nor

possibility going to happen. But all seems a terrible, direct and personal reality.

Same is this world and this life of yours. Your pleasure and pain too is the same

atma. They are felt in atma. This world in atma is such as waves in the water.

When wave arises in ocean then tell me, for what cause it has arisen and for what

cause it is merged back in the ocean. Same way world too is atma. Except atma

there is none else. Whatever is else is illusion. These human beings you see aren't

even human beings, then how can I saw their action is action.'

'Holy Sire, when someone dies and goes to another loka what is the cause ofhis death and his going to particular place of pain and pleasure. In heaven which

part of human being enjoys the happiness?'

'When atma vibrates into sensational waves then it assumes many names

such as soul, karma, cause, effect, dharma, adharma and many more. When I am-

ness arises in pure consciousness then body becomes a destiny, then body

identification follows like shadow. And upon the lethargy towards the Self with

extroverted passionate will world is imprinted. Then it becomes alive. Then

whatever, however vibrates appear exactly like that. It is only lethargy which has

assumed the form of ego and out of ego doership and enjoyerhood are projectedupon the soul. Passion has become imprinted upon his being that is why he sees this

world as well as heaven and hell. Otherwise, neither there is heaven nor hell.

'As someone leaves one dream and enters into another, same way soul sees

and goes from one loka to another one. As in dream unmanifest becomes manifest

same way one's will solidifies and turnes into heaven and hell. But in truth body,

object and worlds are chidakas misconceived.

'Death is the biggest falsity. Otherwise how can you offer water oblations

and how would it reach to appropriate dead ancestors. Many times those whose

last rites are not performed according to the process given in "Garuda Purana"

they appear in dream and inform, "Because you failed to perform this pinda

offering we have fallen in trouble in such and such dirty place." Or after riteswhen pleased they tell, "Our this much wealth is lying hidden in certain place." You

get it out and use it. These evidences prove there was no complete death forever.

Only change of clothes. As long as love lasts their connection and communications

continue. But in fact they still move and travel and interact in illusion or from one

dream to another.

'Dear Hunter, this experience is like wish-fulfilling tree. As soon as

whatever vibrates, likewise sprouts. One is will- evident (sankalpa siddha) and

second is sight-evident (dristi siddha). Solid passion is the cause.'

'What is will-evident and sight-evident, Sire?''When you suppose something as I am bramhan (wise man), I am ksatriya

(warrior), I am vaisya (businessman) or sudra (laborer), renuncient, student,

householder etc., these suppositions when deeply solidified are then called sankalp

siddha (will-evident). When you see, hear, touch and feel, then know and make a

belief out of it, this is called dristi siddha (sight-evident).

'These superimpositions are rock-like barriers to experience Bramha. But

Bramha is so subtle and delicate and you are so opaque and rock hard that in order

to melt and purify, everyone has to go through these evolutionary suppositions. By

and by transcending one, two, three, four, you ascend. As you ascend you becomesubtle. Your thick-headedness and jackasshood is gone. It is for your cabbage-

headedness, for to be refined all these ascending steps and stages of evolutionary

consciousness have been developed.

'Although they are as important and compulsory as your going to a travel

agency to buy a plane ticket to fly to New York. The ticket goes in the trash, but

that is only when you have reached New York airport, not when you are still in Los

Angeles, not even when you are boarding the plane, not even when you have already

boarded the plane. Because you may be checked or when you stop overnight in

Chicago then you will need it. Tickets become useless only when you have reachedyour destination. Same way, when you have reached absolute climax of subtlity and

attained the Supreme Bramhan then only all these become useless and are never

needed or never existed. They were shining blue waters of the hot desert in the

mirage. One who desires for things of the world cannot get atma. One who desires

for dream objects, obviously he is not interested in waking up.

'Dear Hunter, as billions of waves rise and merge in the ocean, same way

billions of worlds vibrate in the atma. Each individual has different worlds and

they are unknown to each other. Just as two persons are sleeping side by side and

dreaming. A special kind of yogi who develops antavahak body, he only knows and

travels if he wants to. Just like frogs: one frog lives in a pond, another in a well, another in the ocean. Places are different but water is the same. Water knows

frog is in him. World too is in different minds but depends on existence of the

Self. Bramha alone knows they are in him. And these know whom he lets know.

'As elephant spreads his trunk and withdraws, same way, when sensation

spreads world spreads. When sensation withdraws delusion takes place.

'The world is in the shine of atom of chit. It unites with mind then mind and

prana unite. When prana agitates mind feels pain, then prana agitates more. When

prana stays mind rests. When prana moves in agitation -- waking, dreaming and

sleeping come and go. When you eat it stays on waking nerves. Then sleep comes.Moditifications of mind spreads in and mind sees dream of all what is suppressed in

subconscious. When pitta is more dream is related with hot objects. When vata is

predominant wind related objects come. When kapha is predominant then water

related dreams come. Thus soul keeps wandering in different states of life's

darkness. When all three are agitated delusion comes. Like a frog comes under a

rock, likewise samvit comes under the weight of food being digested and sleep

comes.

'Holy Sire, besides world and delusion in the chitta of that sleeping man

what else you saw?''I saw huge mountains are flying like dry leaves, and showers of stones are

going on too. Then I saw torrents of rain. When I entered waking nerves through

intestine there the food particles which fell appeared to me as huge as mountains.

The vibration of mind was stopped through sleep and I fell in a hell-like place.

Then when food was digested pressure upon samvit reduced, then waking came.

And as from a married woman child is born, likewise I was born anew.'

'The sleep you went through in atma, although you were awake and Self

realized, in such a high stage of waking, if sleep came what it might be? Under

which you were pressed, what kind of sleep was that from which new world isborn?'

'It is atma whose other name is sleep. And from atmic sleep world

originates. Air is in stillness as well as in movement, same way, atma is in both

stages. Water is in waves, in stillness of ocean, in rain, in flowing rivers. Same way

atma is appearing in very many stages of life.

Just like a funny little man who got tattooed so nicely on his arm the picture

of a lion and tiger and now he is running out of fear as if they are alive just going

to jump on him and eat him. This man's suffering is due to lethargy of stupidity of

fixation crisis. Once he comes in his right state of mind his fear is gone with

understanding of its being just one of his limbs which he can use in whatever wayhe likes. It is part and parcel of his body. Body is crippled without a hand, but out

of fear he may go and get the hand cut off because lion is sitting right there. This

is exactly how people of the world are suffering. This diversity, these pairs of

opposites, these devastations are a dream show upon your own piece of awareness.

Due to your fixation crisis it is appearing. It is in fact more important part of

yourself than hand. Hand is at least outside, and upon which the world is appearing

is piece of one's own consciousness.

'As soon as, as much as you become introvert, maturity and warenesssolidifies. Then as sunrays shine at the dusk, by and by and by brightens into

effulgent sun, likewise man becomes introvert and Bramha experience like flower

of lotus blooms petal by petal. Detachment from sense objects and practice of

Self actualization you attain such magnanimity.

'Emerging from his sleep I saw the world as if someone came out of the

ocean, as world of thought rolled, as cloud in sky rumbled and rolled, fruit from

tree emanated, likewise world emerged from his sleep, chitamam gem came out

from desire tree. As hairs on body stand, as city of celestials, gandharvas, nagas

spreads in sky, as sprouts emerge from fertile clay. As artworks curved on walls, dolls painted on pillars, likewise I saw the world. From the clay of atma vessels of

objects went on emerging. As pictured in empty sky dolls are imagined, as spider's

web spreads out in sky, same way in hollow sky creation emerged from the heart of

that man and appeared before me clearly.

'As by place, time, action and object true or false things began to appear,

even nonexistent objects begin to look real, as due to power of gem, mantra,

medicine and mistake false things appears as real and real for false, same way due

to power of practice a world, a universe, a bramhand began to appear before me.

Whatever kind of decision you project upon your heart that begins to show up asreal. In reality neither there is any object ever made, nor is never in nor out, nor

waking, nor dreaming there is. Whole world is inside. Due to lethargy one sees

emerging out. Sing one alone Bramha is misconceived by zombies as waking when

sensations vibrate outside. Dreaming when it vibrates inside. Deep sleep when

sensations stay still. These are three phases of one darkness caused by ignorance

of Bramha.'

'What did you see after the delusion?'

'I saw bramhand cosmic egg merging inside him. And in there on planet

earth, in one small continent, in one tiny country, in one tiny city I saw myself, a

sixteen year old young man looking towards other bundles of blood, bones and flesh

with lustful eyes. I had completely forgotten what I call I is only a skeleton neatlyplastered by dirt emanating skin and projected upon this pot of urine, stool, mucus

and odor, whatever ignorant parents, society and others mistaught me.

'Looking at all so-called female bundles of blood, bones and ovum with sexual

eyes as natural by all so-called male bundles of blood, bones and semen as natural

and okay, I too began my expeditions of world of misunderstanding. I married,

then whenever I felt obsessed by feverish animalistic stuff called sexual desire (in

fact it has no meaning, just a word, but that act is projected upon it) we both

copulated and she conceived over and over and over new, tiny, soft, fragile bundles

of blood, bones and flesh. Then like a gushing stream my and wife's violent urgesof possessiveness clustered together and focused on that helpless, poor, innocent

soul who was sent to human form specially for attaining his inner atma. Then all

our so-called family teamed, ganged up and began programming and hypnotizing him

only for the cost of food, shelter and credit of giving birth. Thus we exploited and

brainwashed the baby to be conditioned and programmed very heavily to believe

himself nothing else, no more than a robot to meet the natural calls of his body and

stay all life as our captive physically and mentally. We trained him to be angry and

fight for our stupid beliefs we ingrained in his brain. By sixteen he turned out

exactly as our gang members of family, neighborhood and herds of news medias, television, radio, newspapers sent spells after spells after spells of ignorance.

'I and my wife made love whenever we got bored or passionate or

romantically induced by movies, songs, food, other erotic and amorous

confrontations. Consequently many girls and boys were born. And we trained them

not for the purpose for which to accomplish the cosmic giving them birth and

placing on our shoulders trust and responsibility, but to put spell on them and put

an abstract electrod in their brain so that they could stay our captive and slave as

well as to their own physical body and everchanging psychological values. This was

in relation to society, neighborhood and country where we lived who were as blindand deaf to the Reality as I was. It was too late to realize how individually,

socially, nationally and internationally we had blocked the door of all possibilities to

be awakened into Reality and attain the Bramha.

'It was only then I sensed what a hell and foolishness I made out of my life

when I read Sri Swami Prem's literature. I felt awakened in my seventies. But it

was almost impossible to share it with all family members and neighborhood.

Page 65: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

Because foolishly I had and similarly they all had ruined the life of children to stay

the captive of body, local customs and stay blind and deaf towards Ultimate

Reality which is the true Self of each one of us. It was too late to tell them. But

the message is so heart touching and life awakening that I did share regardless of

their annoyance and insulting criticism. And I got a few neighbors and my daughterconvinced. But when I made our meditation room, sat and studied Ramayana and

practiced yoga, it was as difficult and tough job to evolve in subtle experience of

meditation as to cut a rock with a blunt knife. But this was all my fault. I

advocated and shared ignorance. Now I had to work hard. That is my payment of

debt too as well as penance for my stupidity of ruining their life who depended on

me.

'All literature of Sri Swami Prem were shining in my livingroom and whoever

came I turned the talk to spiritual matters. With slight opposition in the beginning

but I won at last and I got a good audience to hear me. And I would immediatelypick up, quote and convince others of higher reality. Thus our center of Sarvam

Khalvidam Bramha started. As I then lived in Geneva, entire Switzerland came to

our center and then throughout Europe intercontinental study and contemplation

services of Upanisadas, Ramayana began. Holy men began to arrive from far and

wide. USA was no more a spiritual center of the world now. Europe became. Its

nuclear poison in the air vanished. With association of holy men, practice of living

greater understanding the feeling of truth in outer sight vanished away. Everyone

of us was exploring "Who Am I?", "What is this World?", "What is the Purpose of

Life?" Everyone of us was feeling facticity of the world as similar as blueness inthe sky, magic of a magician and cobra in a rope. Soon many of us were awakening

into the experience of Bramhic reality.'

'Holy Sire, you said many times it is difficult to wipe out world-illusion. Why

do you call it world-illusion? And if it is illusion like dream why it had to be

difficult to wipe it out?'

'Hunter, it is only a matter of short and long. Dream is short-term illusion

and waking is long-term illusion. Only due to its short turn dream appears to be

false and illusion. But both are illusions of same quality. In dream too many things

feel like false and true so also in waking many things appear false and true. But allof them are equally false and the Truth has to be attained. And that is the

purpose of life.

'The difference is only of decision. There is no difference in things. In

which your decision is firm that is truth for you. Truth and false are only your

choice, in a nutshell, your personal liking and disliking.

'Socrates was sentenced to death for spreading out what was not good

(false) to the then Greek aristocrates. Christ too and Mansoor also. There is a

long list of innocent, honest and hard worker people who were imprisoned or killed

by the law of the State. Because they were tried on definition of false and

correct of contemporary social beliefs. Gandhi was imprisoned for being on thefalse path. False means detrimental to the British government. This is a personal

belief. Everywhere in this world the justice of court system follows the truth,

moral or legality of likings and dislikings of the ruler of the time. That is why when

India became free Gandhi became worshipable. But now again new awareness is

awakening in Indian society in which Gandhi's truth was not the real truth but

false truth. A new real truth awakening may not be compulsorily truth. It can

again be just liking of the new time. But truth can be really truth when it matches

with and moves in harmony with the Truth of awakening. The Truth of Prince Rama

and Vasistha. When you place the whole world and its everything on scale offalse/only a mirage and then sincerely search for the Absolute Truth.

'As you see another dream from one dream then move to another dream. So

What? These all worlds of dreams are oneself. So also the world is oneself. It is

one's own limbs. Rather more close to the limbs. Limbs are somehow farther than

mind. And world is in the mind, in the chitta, in your very heart.

'Dear Hunter...

The concentrated universality of dream is Hiranyagarbha.

Concentrated universality of deep sleep is prajna or avyakrit maya,

and concentrated universality of waking is Virat. And Turiya is the concentrated universality of all the three stages. Turiya means

witness.

These four bodies are forms of Supreme God. The Supreme God is formless

unmanifest. Whatever form appears that too is his form, but is beyond all

imaginations. As in rock lotus flower does not bloom so also in atma world does not

happen.

'Holy sage, in the heart of the man when you entered how did you travel and

move, and what did you see?'

'I saw various planets, galaxies, universes and entire bramhand. I was bornin Geneva, Switzerland. I was raised by Swiss parents, among Swiss customs and

culture. I was trained as successful citizen of the nation. I had a big bank

balance, family, a business and fame. To keep up with all these occupied all my time

of life. When my children grew up, I handed over my business to them and went to

a retreat in the Alp mountains. I developed a quest for Truth. I became a

Page 67: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

follower of Sri Swami Prem's way of enlightenment. One day a sage arrived in my

residence.

I was very happy. I hosted him in the best part of my bungalow. I feasted

him pure vegetarian dishes. I drove my car around the hills of the Alps introducing

him to my friends, organizing discourses. That night after a wonderful discourse inthe biggest auditorium of the town, I asked him--

'Holy Sire, I have heard every action has an equal reaction. Whatever one

does reaps the consequences sooner or later. But in third world countries why

people suffer collectively? Have they done equally dirty karmas to go through

similar consequences? In Ethopia, in India and other poor and disaster grabbed

countries I see thousands of people die or suffer through famine, flood and

epidemic diseases collectively. What is the reason?'

'You are right,' he answered. 'In 1600 AD you remember an epidemic

disease Plague had grabbed the entire continent. People were dieing in millionseveryday. Same way in the war. In the accidents in USA and all over the world

more people die in car crashs than died in second World War. Of all these there is

no cause. What is the cause of happenings in the dream. Likewise you are my

dream figure and I am your dream figure. This world is purely dream. There is no

cause and no effect. All are reflections. The whole world is just oneself. Only

atma is established in atma. And sensation vibrates as ego and assumes the form

of this world. As bubbles of sensation rise up similarly world assumes different

and diverse forms. Whoever develops doership notion of action fruit follows him.

Anyone holds onto rights, duties and responsibilities the fruit sticks to him as ifglued with super glue.

'This bramhand has one Virat. All the lokas are on his limbs. This Virat is in

the will of another, bigger Virat. That Virat is the thrill of another great Virat.

When there is irritation in the limbs of Virat there is ego. More space and stretch

of extra distances in ego trip causes pollution of clear thinking. Then sin spreads.

Then limb irritation and passion combine and disaster bursts. If a cobra bites your

limb, no matter how small a place, your whole body suffers. World is body of the

cosmic; when sinfulness creeps in one tiny place entire related area is affected and

suffering becomes collective. This is only a long term tentative cause. In realitythere is no cause like dream has no cause but in dream there are causes. It is due

to lethargy a problematic attitude develops.

'When you go to another plane of existence after death the body is left

here buried or cremated. If your next life suffering is caused by karma then what

was the cause of that body? That was causeless. Therefore all cause and effect

relationships are make believe, tentative and supposition for things to go by well.

Page 68: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

As a child fears and shivers assuming ghost in his shadow due to lethargy this

world, this life too is appearing vast and dreadful and too scientific, risky and full

of chickenshit rules, laws and regulations. In fact Bramha alone is whether looking

like world or as itself. As air moves and stays still in both states is one and the

same. Due to fixation of certain decision in certain pattern cause-effect juggleryis shown. To whom this is true world is true also but only to him.

'Dear Hunter, thus sage Ugratapa answered me in that auditorium. We all

became suddenly exhilarated. A dark cloud was lifted and we felt at ease and our

meditation has gotten deeper since then. I felt as if cleaned after a nice shower

remaining dust smeared from a long time. Now the samadhi body and Self realized

Ugratapa is sitting before you.'

'Holy Sire, you said sage Ugratapa taught me in the dream. Then you say in

waking he is sitting right here. How to understand it? A child misconceived ghost

in his shadow and after getting out of misconception says the ghost is sitting here. Please explain?'

'It is an interesting matter. When the sage Ugratapa gave the discourse

and answered my questions in Geneva's auditorium I told him, 'Dear sir, please be

like me and live here instead of me.' Then he began to look and live like me. And

receiving his new insight I began to consider -- When world is nonexistent why to

try for its pleasure. Senses are like serpent enjoyer of their objects do not

become free from bondage of the world. They run into the desert to get water

towards the mirage they become exhausted. Family members are like fetters of

the legs and pushers into the dark dry well. Tied with these fetters I was fallen inthe mire of worldly bondage. Shall I renounce it? But even if I do so without

rising above body identification there will be no peace. So I went to Swami

Devaadhi deva I offered my obeisances and asked, 'Can I go and find out where my

body is as well as this man's body in whose dream I have entered and traveling the

journey of my life? Please take care of my body I am going to find out where my

body is as well as his?' and I rose above my physical body through antavahak and

flew above and above and above all around in the sky. I did not find, so I returned

and asked Swami Devaadhi deva, and he said--

'Dear? In the forest where you lived with your disciples, where yourhermitage was made, where the man was sleeping, a wild fire arose and burned

down all trees, cottages and your bodies, even waters of the pond were boiling.

Now there is no body left. Now you are stuck in the subtle body of that unknown

man who once slept in the vacinity of your hermitage.'

'Holy Sire, what was the cause of that wild fire?'

Page 69: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

7/31/2019 Yoga Vasistha Section 4

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/yoga-vasistha-section-4 69/78

Vivekananda Page 69

'Due to agitation in the body of Virat the wild fire ensued and burned down a

vast tract of land and forest dwellers. The world where we are sitting has one

Virat who has his greater Virat in whose world you entered. That too belongs to

the world of Virat where your body was set in lotus posture and doing astral

projection. The Virat of that Virat is Bramhaa from whose mind all theseemanated. Bramhaaji's Virat is atma in which nothing has ever been made, is nor

will be. Who entertains lethargy to its understanding much trouble and cause-

effect trap appears to him. He suffers pleasure and pain according to his karma.

One who realizes atma to him nothing ever bothers because only atma and atma is

seen everywhere. Bramha alone shines in his life in effulgent glory and grace.

'Now, not even the ashes of your body are left. As dream sights are

unavailable in waking world so also your body is a bygone history of not even this

world but astral world. Dear sage, this world is a dream inside dream inside a

dream. I am in your dream. In this dream everyone is different. They all arereflections of one reality Bramha. That is the nature of all. World is reflection of

that. As will woven world, dream world, gandharv city imagery are illusions so is

this world. This world is in your dream. It is only due to practice of years and

training by your ignorant parents, neighborhood, society and the world's current

civilization this so-called cause-effect concoction and fantasy of world deludes you

as real.' Said sage Ugratapa.

'Suppose if it is true then everyone's dream will become true...?'

'First you must understand what is Truth. You say the world where your

body was, where you lived before is truth compared to this. Then in comparison towhat you will say your present waking state is false? This is abstract. And this is

appearing so real. Cause and effect connected so well. All your scientific

knowledges are well established. When this solid, scientific, systematic, logical and

rational world and life is mere fantasy of mind then watch out for the plane of

existence where your body seated in lotus pose is a dream. That dimension of

reality a solid reality. That is the Truth.

'Wake up into that reality and see yourself that in this and that there is no

difference at all.

'Whatever world there is are all luster of the gem of atma. In sunrayswater appears, same way world is appearing in the rays of atma. Of guru of a

hunter, be established on your atma. That is your pure Self.'

'Telling this, sage Ugratapa rested on his bed in that silent night of

Switzerland. I went to my chamber and rested for the night. In the morning

after shower and meditation I approached the sage, offered him my obeisances

Page 70: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

and asked, 'Kindly tell me the reason why you referred me as guru of a hunter? I

do not even know any hunter?'

'O long term ascetic, forest dweller saint, why go on worrying on petty

things. Better you be seated in lotus pose, close your eyes and see for yourself and

you will know it.' Sage said.'Then I tried as he said but due to my former training and practice into

extrovert objects and sights I failed repeatedly. Then I begged him for help. He

was so compassionate and he said--

'O long term ascetic, push hard through your false programing. Toss away

the spell or hypnosis of physical reality and you will see what I can see. I see very

well. In a few thousand years this country as well as whole European continent will

have lost its contact with dharma, the basis of cosmic law. It will imbalance the

natural law and great flood will devour the entire continent and that will be

followed by a murderous famine. All people will be dead. All these picturesquesights will burn away in utter dryness. It will turn into barren land. Long time will

pass away. I and you, only two, will survive. Since we both will be realized (violet

red) we will still live on, on this land.

'Then after a long time by the power of our meditation and dharma way of

life there will be rain. Green grass, trees and forests of trees will come back.

Ponds will be full of water. Mountains will be green, fountains and rivers will flow

with crystal clear water. Flowers and fruit will bloom and ripen and their perfumes

will spread. Peacocks and deer will dance and leap. Cuckoos will coo and bumble

bees will hum on lotuses. It will become the best tourist resort in the world.'Then one time when we will have just completed our meditations a hunter

chasing a deer will come to your cottage. He will inquire about dream and

wakefulness. In that context you will educate him in the wisdom of Bramha. You

will also mention your visit with me. Impressed by your word, detached he will

become and engage in meditation. His heart will become pure and he will attain the

Truth. I see past and future as present that is why I called you the guru of a

hunter.'

'Dear Hunter, isn't it so amazing. This is how we talked. Night passed. I

took bath and prolonged my retreat. Then I began living there permanently withsage Ugratapa. Every day I did service for him. I began to ponder over cause and

effect concluding their falseness, world as a vast dream. World only a shine of

atmic moon. This is a miracle of atma. Atma assumes the form of jar, pot, man,

woman, animal, bird and mountain. If it is illusion who is the cause of this illusion.

Who sees this illusion. The body through which it was being seen that is already

burned. Now to whom it is being seen? Considering thus like mountain I entered in

Page 71: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

my Absolute Self. Neither I had desire for joy nor for death, neither pleasure nor

worry. Then suffering dropped off, world too dropped off and it appeared to me

as extension of mySelf.'

'Holy Sire, if it is so then I, you, all this and Bramhaaji too all belong to a

vast dream. False is appearing like truth. What to do?' Hunter asked.'Yes, Hunter, you, I, all this up to Bramhaaji, all are dream fantasy. This

Truth of the world is neither truth, nor nontruth, nor in between truth and

nontruth, nor inconceivable. Because it is experienceable. With experience it is

like this. Without experience it has no existence. If you look at it through eye of

Bramha it is just Bramha. Away, astray and besides it it is none. It is void --

cosmic emptiness.

'If you have seen a city in the past, if it is faraway and you remember it.

While remembering you see it. Yes, you do see it but it is not created, nor made.

It is will-woven, same way all things of the world are will-woven and none are evermade or created. World is living in memories. Be established in your true nature.

The sage paused for a long time. Pin drop silence prevailed. Then sage asked

affectionately, 'Dear Hunter, did you find rest in yourself now or not? My

teaching touched your heart or not?'

In the assembly of King Dasarath, surrounded by sages, princes, princesses,

queens, ministers and citizens, King Vipaschit said to all--

"When the holy sage said to hunter like this hunter was amazed. As if

painted picture on paper he stood still and silent for a long time. Like clay potplaced on potter's wheel he moved round and round in a whirlpool of doubt. He

heard the nectarine teaching of the sage but his practice was not mature enough,

therefore he could not get to the point of rest. As oblation poured on ashes

education into brain of foolish goes in vain.

"He thanked the sage, stood up and went to his hut. He began to perform

tapas. He wanted to see himself whether world is true or not. He abandoned the

sinful life of a hunter, and day by day by day he spent in asceticism. He continued

tapas for one thousand years. He willed his body to be bigger, greater and larger.

To discover the end of the vast world obviously he needed a largest body. So hismind went like this.

"After one thousand years he approached his guru and offered obeisances

and asked, 'Holy Sire, I did such long austerity but peace did not come to me?

Why?'

Page 72: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

Vivekananda Page 72

'Because what I said you did not practice it properly, therefore peace did

not come to you. I ignited a spark of understanding but you did not inflame it

through wind of practice. That is why it became obscured.

'Hunter, you are neither stupid nor wise. Had you been wise you would have

attained atma. Had you been stupid you would have run away from here into yourold business. But I give you my word, when you transcend your ignorance you will

attain peace. Nor am I telling you your future. I can see what is in your mind --

your anguish is to go all the way to the end of the universe, and you will not

withdraw it. For a hundred yugas you will do tapas. Then Bramhaaji will appear and

ask, 'What do you want?' You will say--

'Hello Bramhaaji, world is avidyak -- ignorance is in one of its atoms. After

it is dissolved atma will appear to me. A part of mirror is stained. Stain needs to

be cleaned up. After it is cleaned then atma will appear to me. So until I have

discovered the limit of world let my body go on expanding. Let me expand withspeed of an eagle. Every hour my body should grow eight miles and miles and miles.

And let the death be under my control. I should stay healthy. I should cross

successfully whatever comes in my path. I shall have free access to wherever I go

even beyond the bramhand. Whenever I see the end of the world then let me

attain the atma.'

'Bramhaaji will say, 'So be it.' Then you will shine like sun and the moon,

and then begin to grow with speed of an eagle. As light expands after sun rises so

will your body be growing. It will grow like ocean of delusion. As dry leaves blow in

the wind like that planets will be blowing away by the velocity of your speed.'Your body will keep on growing. Expanding to the end of the earth, to the

end of the planet, to the end of the galaxy, to the end of the universe, to the end

of the cosmos. As innumerable waves rise in the ocean you will see innumerable

universes, but in which ocean the creations spring up you will not know that. You

will see you are the big guy, but then you will also realize its futility. You will

develop detachment. You will feel sorry, because you saw the spheres of only

ignorance. By knowing ignorance knowledge does not come. Knowledge comes when

you practice Self actualization. That happens through association of holy man.

You will feel the weight of body is so exhausting. It is bigger than even amountain. How holy association will be possible.

'Then you will do pranayam and will drop your body through dharana. Then

as bird drops a seed eating the pulp of fruit, same way you will drop your body.

Your body will fall upon one of the illusions of the world, and under your body's

weight innumerable mountains, rivers, countries and beings will be crushed to

death. By the prayers of remaining people Mother Tripursundari will take care of

cleaning off your body. Hunter, go there, look at that Tamal tree. That is waiting

for you. Now do as you wish.'

'Oh, holy sire, gurudeo, do I have to fall in such a degraded condition? Do

something, please, so that this idea of my mind could go away,' hunter said.

'Whatever is to happen, does happen for sure. What destiny body has madeit happens without fail. As like when you shoot an arrow it flies fast until it hits

the target. You are free to stand on one leg, but when you have chosen right leg

you cannot choose left leg until you get the right leg back to its place.

'As long as desire of alluration touches the heart human being cannot get

out of bondage of karma. When it does not touch your being only then duality is

kept out. Practice of non-dual experience matures the man.'

'Holy Sire, I am amazed, scared and worried too -- hearing your narration

about the fall of my body. Please tell me what will happen after this historic fall?'

asked the hunter.'Hunter, after leaving gigantic, mountainous body your soul and prana

encaged in causal and astral body will become very subtle and spacious. It will

travel in and through the sky searching for planet, earth, country, city, family,

passion of which had been stored and recorded in the heart. Then you will take

birth in a royal dynasty as prince of King Purander and Vidyublekhaa. The king

coronated you and left for retreat in Himalayan silence. Your name will be famous

as King Siddharaj.

'Many hundred years you will govern the country and enjoy sovereignty of

the world. Then King Vidurath will rise in power and fame. You will feel challengedby his sudden, fast growth. Surrounded by a huge army you will invade the king. In

a fierceful battle King Vidurath will destroy three fourths of your enemy. You too

will be seriously wounded. Considering him invincible in archery you will challenge

him for a dual fight. He will approve. Then unjustly you will chop off his leg and

hurt the private parts of his body upon which a brave and righteous warrior never

injures. Upon being fatally wounded, charioteer of the king will take him into his

palace where he will die. You will win the war, his capitol and wealth. You will be

enjoying the victory, hearing the braggings you will make one of your ministers

open his mouth.''Have you ever considered, His Majesty, when you chased King Vidurath to

his palace, why you felt like being electrocuted if you took a single step towards

his palace?'

'No, I don't, but what is the context?'

'Yes, there is, His Majesty. You do not know the wife of King Vidurath. She

satisfied goddess Minerva, the White Lady, the one whose single rage can destroy

the whole world -- but both prayed for enlightenment. So by hook or crook you

grabbed your victory and they attained enlightenment.'

'How do you know that?' King asked.

'I have evidence. One of the wise counselors saw goddess Sarasvati herself

was present in the king's chamber. When he died she was there. By her power thepalace was protected and if you had entered you may have been electrocuted.'

Minister said.

'But I also worship Divine Mother.'

'But you never prayed for enlightenment. You always wished for wealth,

victory, rule and all that is anti-enlightenment. As is your decision so is your

fulfillment. His samskaras were bright and satvik; he is liberated. Your samskaras

are dark, tamasik; you are far from it and you have no peace.'

'Okay, tell me wise guy, atma is spotless, blameless, clean and effulgent,

from where tamasik body emanated from there?''As in dream there is no darkness, no murder, no crime, still you see it

happening, same way due to ignorance and body identification and lethargy these

blemishes appear. You are terribly lethargic, that is why passion (vasana) is too

strong in you. Because of this you have been transmigrating through hundreds of

lifetimes, I know them all. The past life body you had was tamas tamasic. That is

why you do not have feverish desire for liberation.'

'Please, tell me, what is tamas tamasi?' King now humble, asked.

'There is one level of consciousness known as satvic satviki; second is only

satviki; third, rajas rajasi; fourth, only rajasi; fifth, tamas tamasi; and sixthonly tamasi.

'Those who are first vibrations of Absolute Bramha, whose identifications

easily shift from Bramha to theirs and from theirs into Bramha, such as Bramhaaji,

four Kumaras and ten sons of Bramhaaji are satvik satviki.

'Those who have mode of peacefulness, clarity of vision and humble,

sensitive nature but lethargic towards Self realization are only satviki.

'Those whose intellect has materialized and felt the existence of

innumerable rajasic things, places and persons; who have strong habit of involving

in works. Without work they feel drained, useless and sleepy, consequently go onbirthing and dieing and birthing and involving in innumerable hectic actions are

Rajas Rajasi.

'Those who cannot relate to the higher understanding, cannot believe there

are better things to attain, than joys of eating, drinking and regular merry making,

beyond this life and this world are only Rajasi -- They are greater than Rajas

rajasi because as hard workoholic they are, they work hard to realize the Self

whenever they understand the point. Only difficulty is their mind is too thick to

grasp the subtle understanding.

'Those who have strong addiction of drugs, immoral acts and crimes or are

very dull, lazy, have reluctance to any kind of work, who escape responsibilities,

who are too fickle to remember their liabilities but insist on their birth rights.Fortunately if they happen to meet a Realized, holy saint they leave him. These

are Tamas Tamasi.

'Those who are addicted to crimes or sleep, stalling urgent works infinitely,

but still want and try to know the Truth, practice too a little but see funny, silly

lights and consider them high experiences, they are Rajasi. And better than

Tamas Tamasi.

'O King Siddharaj, you were Tamas Tamasi, therefore you failed to strive

hard for enlightenment.' Said the minister.

'Wow, O great minister, you are right. You are absolutely correct. Butcould you please tell me now how shall I transcend my ego and attain the atma?'

'Same which was a destiny maker yesterday is destiny maker even today. Do

practice. No matter how sinful action you have done do pious action in series and

practice to make it a habit. And you are a meritorious man.'

Sage said, 'O Hunter, this way you will be educated by your minister, then

you will be so touched by it that you will renounce the kingship. Army General will

request, whole parliment membership will say, 'Drop that, just stay and rule us,'

still you will not rule. You will coronate your son and renounce. You will go to

Himalayas and live in Valley of Flowers where those fascinating perfumed ofheavenly lotuses bloom.

'As perfumes come to enliven you without even asking for it, same way

higher knowledge is imparted when you stay close to a holy man. He will shower

abundance of wisdom on you like heavenly flowers. And one day you will attain the

serenity of Bramha. Thus, O Hunter, I described your future as you asked me.

Now as you wish do so.'

"Hunter was extremely surprised. Both went to the river and took their

bath, sat in the moonshine, then returned to their hermitages and absorbed in

tapas. After sometime the sage left his body. Hunter kept doing tapas. After onehundred yugas, Bramhaaji appeared with celestials and asked him, 'Whatever you

wish ask for it.' And he asked exactly what was foretold. Even knowing the future

he asked for the same. 'So be it,' said Bramhaaji and disappeared.

"Since then his body became larger and larger and larger. It penetrated in

and through the bramhandas. He saw innumerable universes spread all over in the

Page 76: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

space and time. Then he became tired to see inexhaustible expanse of avidya (the

ignorance) and pulling his life breath up, he dropped his body."

This is the story Bhasa (Vipaschit) was telling in the assembly of King

Dasaratha, when he was rescued by Lord Agni from the devastating fall of thegreat corpse and taken to safety in the sky on his airplane; he was describing the

entire history. So here Lord Agni concluded and paused.

Bhasa said, "Telling me like this, Lord Agni gave me farewell and said he was

now going on an emergency call to Indra, and that now the world was safe I can go.

I then proceeded further. I entered one of the planets and saw very strange

creatures living there. I went to another planet; people were too short and had

wooden legs and they acted like men. In the new planet they were as if made of

stone but acting as robot. In another one people keep sitting and talking loudly.

Then I came into a grove of wish-fulfilling trees and wandering around, I saw a manvery handsome and illustrious.

'Hello Gentleman, where are you going; come here sit before me?' He said.

'Who are you sir, first tell me?' I asked.

'Me, I am the embodiment of your meritorious deeds. Ask me something you

want and I shall offer that to you.' He replied.

'Then make me Self-realized. Let me become enlightened.' I said.

'That is good. You will have to go through one more life -- a deer life. That

is due in between your present life and enlightenment. As a deer you will be taken

into an assembly of the wisest men on the planet. There Lord Agni will purify you.You will become human again and then right there enlightenment will come to you as

simply comes to you a sleep in a soft bed on a cozy, cool midnight.' He said.

"I became a deer in your planet and roaming, leaping and running, eating

grass and fruit I spent many sufferingful years until I came here. This is my

story, O great King Dasarath and all citizens of this sacred state."

"Hello Mr. Bhasa, can I ask you a question?" Prince Rama asked.

"Of course, of course, why not Prince Regent." He said.

"The deer belonged to another planet, how come it was here?"

"His Majesty, the place from where the deer had been gotten, that placetoo was from another planet of another universe. The story is as follows--

"Once upon a time Sage Durvasa was meditating in the sky which was

pathway from heaven to earth. Indra was coming down to earth and he happened

to commit a great offense to the mighty sage. He literally kicked him by foot.

The sage was angry and curse was insued upon him-- 'That yajna you are going for

will be crushed, earth too will be destroyed under the heavy weight of a corpse.'

Page 77: Yoga Vasistha Section 4

Vivekananda Page 77

This is how the gigantic corpse fell and yajna with earth was all smashed up. That

corpse belonged to another universe. It was an accident related to the curse, In

fact to fulfill the curse, word corpse included the planet earth of our universe.

During that misplacement I was also mistransferred to this universe and in your

planet. And I came to your assembly by boon of the sage of Meritorious Deeds."Dear Rama, you are the Prince in my dream universe and I am in your dream

universe. As is the reality of dream objects so is corpse and deer evaluated. As

this is universe so is that. If this universe is true that is true also. If that is

illusion this too is illusion. Truth is that which is imperceptible by six senses and is

the basis of all. In such IS-NESS of all nothing is ever created nor will ever be

created nor has anything been created. World and life are only desire-fabrication,

will-woven. It is just imagination. In imagination, another imagination easily enters

and becomes part of it. There is no wonder I am from the other planet why I am

here. Like shadow and sunshine, like ignorance and knowledge do not assembletogether, but only in atma they seem to be in one place.

"Dear Rama, when a man sleeps his nature becomes that of just experience.

When city appears in dream, sun and shadow, right and wrong, good and bad, heat

and cold, hunger and contentment all reflect. As many opposite contradictory and

conflicting things appear in sky, same way in the sky of will, fantasy, imagination or

desire too, truth and false appear and prevail. And you cannot know they are

tentative until you know the Absolute.

"But one cannot say the world as myth. Because then after dissolution it

may not have born again, but it does come up. Therefore not completely a myth. Itis the very nature of atma. Atma himself is appearing in the form of this world.

"In Bramha innumerable bramhandas vibrate but individual knows only his

world. One world does not know of the other. Each one's world is different but

they combine together also, at times partially or fully.

There are four different appearances that vibrate in Bramha -- Saradhi,

Gopati, Samana and avidya. First two reflect in the emotion of the seeker of

Truth. Samana is Bramhasattaa which appears only to Realized saints. And avidya

reflects to worldly individuals. But all four are nondifferent from Bramha.

Prism of gem -- change the angle and it shines entirely apposite. There is no

object which is not true and which is true.

"In each object there is truth and myth. As there is flower of sky so are

these jars, pots and things, as we perceive existence of these so we do there is. In

atma at last all these appear as flash of lightenings.

"I in my innumerable life times have seen innumerable universes,

innumerable kinds of habits I had become addicted to, innumerable joys I

enjoyed too. Imperial wealth I owned once. Heroic macrobatic body I

possessed once. Great historic performance I did. I am now remembering

them as flashes of dream. They were all woven in, by and for the ignorance.I traversed millions of years but never found the end. It is only today by my

good, great fortune I saw sage Vasistha. He made me enlightened. I am

bliss-filled. I am liberated. I offer my obeisances to him." Saying thus,

illustrious Vipaschit fell at the feet of the sage... The sage offered his

valuable blessings.

Thus evening descended. Sun disappeared. As if to see the life events of

Vipaschit, Surya went to other universes where he had been through. Music

echoed... evening raga echoed... and Bandis sang the glories of the king. King

offered much land, jewels and gems to Vipaschit and offered him a seat in hisparliment as long as the discourse of the sage was continuing. All dispersed in

different directions, bathed and performed their evening oblutions.

Next day after sunrise they were awaiting in the assembly as yesterday and

everyday. Like everyday, sage Vasistha's discourse flowed like holy Ganga,

murmuring, meandering musically in a serpentine way. It flowed and flowed in

Dasaratha's assembly. And it is still flowing even now, only you have to hear it.

"Dear Assembly members."
