DEAR FRIENDS,WE’RE GROWING at the YMCA of Greater Syracuse—growing to create stronger communities and stronger futures for everyone in Central New York.

We’re growing by opening new facilities. Our Northwest Family YMCA opened in 2015 and we’ve been delivering on our promise to strengthen families and spirit through our programs in the Baldwinsville community.

We’re growing by expanding our programs.

• OUR ACADEMIC SUPPORT PROGRAM is reaching kids in schools across the region, helping them to improve their grades, but also to gain the tools they need to succeed long-term, both educationally and emotionally.

• OUR TRIATHLON PROGRAM is combining the skills of our triathlon and running coaches as well as our comprehensive facilities to help people reach the next level in their training and meet their goals, whether they’re accomplished triathletes or first-timers.

• OUR CANCER SURVIVOR PROGRAMS have been bolstered with the opening of the Kaye Center at the Northwest Family YMCA in Baldwinsville, a comfortable space for information, exercise and community that survivors can call their own.

• OUR ARTS BRANCH is serving over 850 students in after school arts programs within the Syracuse City School District and marked the 15th anniversary of the Downtown Writers Center along with providing the New York State-focused arts journal Stone Canoe a new home at the Y.

Our growth is only possible because of the quality work that our staff, members, donors, volunteers and board do every single day. We’re now serving over 50,000 members, and they know that when they come to the Y, they are part of a community working to strengthen mind, body and spirit and they see that in the effort our employees put forth, at every level.

We’re looking forward to more growth for good in our future, as we continue to deliver on our cause.

THANK YOU.

Sincerely,

Vito SciscioliPresident, Board of Directors

Melinda Robinson with daughters

GROWING FOR OUR MEMBERS

“I AM SO PROUD OF MY DAUGHTERS... THIS PROGRAM HAS BEEN A BLESSING FOR MY FAMILY.”

MELINDA ROBINSON understands the importance of education. After a difficult childhood and brushes with the law, she turned her life around, had a family and earned her associate’s degree. She currently works as a substitute teacher while studying for her bachelor’s degree. Melinda turned to the Y when her older daughters Vazcee and Asja (pictured with Niylah) needed help at school. They found both educational and emotional support at the Y. Now, they have the tools and resources they need for the whole family to succeed in class and in life.

SUSAN CHARLTON found refuge in the programs of the Downtown Writers Center when her grandson, Joshua, developed a rare and aggressive form of cancer and she herself had only recently undergone a serious medical crisis. She was able to corral emotions into poetry and found a group of colleagues that became like a second family. Now, she and her grandson are healthy, but the empowering benefits of the program are ongoing.

“IMMERSION IN THIS PROGRAM BECAME A STRONG COUNTERBALANCE TO... THE WEIGHT OF GRIEF AND ANXIETY.”

FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENTOUR YMCA IS committed to nurturing the potential of every child and teen in Central New York. We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover what they can achieve. That’s why we help young people cultivate the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement. Our Y programs offer a range of experiences that enrich cognitive, social, physical and emotional growth. We are Central New York’s largest provider of top-quality, low-cost, school-age childcare. Our teen volunteer/work program provides on-the-job experience to more teens than any other employer in the area. Other Y offerings include day camp, activities and facilities dedicated to teens and tweens, swimming lessons, youth sports, special-interest clubs, youth exercise programs and inclusion programs for children who have special needs. In 2015, we served 25,544 children and teens through membership and other programs. In addition, our after-school arts and academic enrichment program helped 933 Syracuse city schoolchildren develop as lifelong learners at no cost to them.

FOR HEALTHY LIVINGOUR YMCA IS one of Central New York’s leading voices on health and well-being. We bring families closer together, encourage good health and foster connections through fitness, sports, shared interests and just plain fun. As a result, more than 45,000 people in our community are receiving the support, guidance and resources they need to achieve greater health in spirit, mind and body. This is particularly important as our nation confronts an obesity crisis, families struggle to balance the demands of work, home and school, and individuals search for personal fulfillment. Among YMCAs nationally, we are a leader in providing free programs for cancer survivors and programs to prevent diabetes. Our Downtown Writers Center is a critical piece of the area’s cultural fabric. In 2015, we provided $1.87 million in financial assistance to 14,133 people who otherwise would have been unable to participate in YMCA programs.

FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITYOUR YMCA BELIEVES in giving back and supporting neighbors. We have been meeting the needs of Central New York since 1858. Through our programs, we deliver training, resources and support which empowers our neighbors to effect change, bridge gaps and overcome obstacles. In 2015, our Urban Swim Initiative helped 900 children gain the skills and confidence they need to stay safe and have fun in and around water. At our Downtown Men’s Residence, we provide counseling, subsidized housing, and other support services to men in transition. Our Downtown Senior Center provides subsidized housing to senior citizens and people with disabilities. Together, our residence facilities served 195 people in 2015. Through our 2015 Annual Campaign and other fundraising efforts, 2,432 members and other donors provided more than $530,000 to support our cause. We also engaged 567 YMCA volunteers who served more than 15,000 hours in activities that strengthen our community and pave the way for future generations to thrive.

AT THE Y, WE WORK SIDE BY SIDE with our neighbors to make sure that everyone—regardless of age, income or background—has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. Our work wouldn’t be possible without our donors.

We’re especially grateful to the following, who made leadership gifts of $1,000 or more. They join a circle of supporters founded in 2005 to honor the memory of Dick Besse, a philanthropist, long-standing member and leader of the YMCA of Greater Syracuse. Over several decades, Dick gave generously to advance our mission. Besse Society members are recognized year-round in each YMCA branch. ANNUAL CAMPAIGNWE BELIEVE WE HAVE SOMETHING SPECIAL —a sense of community—and that everyone should have access to it. Our Membership For All program ensures that our doors remain open to whoever needs us.

That’s just one reason we’re so thankful to those who support our cause. Our Annual Campaign provides a direct link between people—those who benefit from the Y’s programs and those who benefit by giving. It’s a partnership that makes us all stronger.

Thanks to our donors, the YMCA of Greater Syracuse provided financial subsidies in 2015 to 14,133 people who otherwise would have been unable to participate in YMCA programs.

SERVICE FOR GOOD JOHN FENNESSEYJOHN FENNESSEY has been a long-time Y member, volunteer, and donor. John began his Y journey in the 1970s. As an undergraduate student at Harpur College (now SUNY Binghamton), John was introduced to the game of handball, and he was hooked! John then went to Syracuse University, where he obtained his Master’s degree, and moved to Rochester for employment where he joined the local Y and continued his passion for the game.

In the early 1970s, John’s employer, the New York State Urban Development Corporation (UDC) transferred him to Syracuse to help in the development of an entirely new community on undeveloped land in the town of Lysander-Radisson. Since he was now living in the Syracuse area, John joined the Downtown Y, where he continued to play handball. As John says, “Handball drew me to the Y, and my stewardship with the New York State Urban Development Corporation drew me to the creation of government-assisted housing.”

John went on to become a Metro board member, and he also became a member of the YMCA Senior Citizen Housing Board. John now serves as the Senior Housing Board president, which oversees the Downtown YMCA Senior Apartments. His real estate development

company helped the Y prepare the application the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development approved to fund the Y’s current 30 senior housing apartments. “My professional experience in housing gave me a special interest in helping the Y in the challenges of serving an elderly housing population. It has also helped with addressing the needs of homeless men in our Downtown Men’s Residence.”

“Our Y provides an astounding number of human services that address a wide range of needs that are not being served at all, or, if served, not as well as those provided by our Y. It is imperative that we all feel an obligation to maximize our individual financial support of our Y for all that it does, and how well it implements these vital human services.”

We appreciate the opportunity to recognize and thank John for his many years of volunteer service, and his personal support for the YMCA. His longstanding commitment and dedication to our cause and to our work have helped thousands of seniors and men in transition have a place to call home. We thank John for everything he does and has done for the Y and the people we serve.

“Our Y provides an astounding number of human services that address a wide range of needs that are not being served at all, or, if served, not as well as those provided by our Y.”John and his wife, Mary Jane
