APS Polyethylene Pipe and Fittings PE100
SDR – The Standard Dimension Ratio of Polyethylene pipe and fittings is calculated as: SDR = OD / W (OD is the outside diameter of the pipe - W is the minimum wall thickness).
Pipe is commonly available with SDR’s of 26, 21, 17 and 11 but can also be bought as SDR 41, 33, 13.6, 9 and 7.4.
Fittings are commonly available in SDR 17 and 11.
Polyethylene pipe and fittings are referred to differently to any other type of pipe because it’s the OD (Outside Diameter) that is the constant with the ID (Internal Diameter) changing to reflect the various SDR ratings. Polyethylene pipe and fittings are referred to using their OD.
Five methods for jointing Polyethylene are usually used: Butt Weld Electrofusion Socket Weld Extrusion Weld Mechanical
Apart from Mechanical all these forms of jointing produce a fusion weld. A good weld could be dissected and show no sign of any joint.
BUTT WELDOnly like products can be welded in this fashion ie:
• Pipes and or fittings with an identical PE rating• Pipes and or fittings with an identical SDR rating
It involves a process of preparing and then heating the faces of two pipes and or fittings at calculated pressures and times before removing the heat source and completing the joint also at calculated pressures and times. These calculated pressures and times are not transferable between machines and may alter from one weld to the next on the same machine for a similar weld.
There are a wide variety of machines designed specifically for the butt welding process. Some consideration should be given to using a machine at its maximum OD capability on low SDR rated pipes/fittings as its performance can be inadequate because of flex in the machines carriage and in some cases an inability to attain the required pressures etc. It’s much more rewarding using a machine that performs easily than to fight one that’s struggling.
In the case of a straight butt welds the resulting joints are considered to have the strength and pressure capabilities of the pipe/ fitting it was produced from.
There are however a number of fabricated fittings produced using a butt weld process that do not attain the strength and pressure capabilities of the parent material and consequently de-rate a line.
Refer PIPA Guidelines: POP006 http://www.pipa.com.au/sites/default/files/document/attachment/pop006.pdf
Fittings up to 1200mm.
ELECTROFUSIONElectrofusion is a simpler method for the jointing of pipe and fittings however there is a smaller margin for error than in the butt weld process.
This process involves the use of female couplings that have an electric heat coil built into them that heat up both the interior of the coupling and the outside of the pipe or fitting inserted into them resulting in a fused joint. Each coupling has zones within it that could be best described as hot and cold or sections that are wired and not wired. These zones are critical to the weld as the cold zones are needed to act as a dam for the hot zones to attain the correct pressures for successful fusion to take place.
Many fittings are now produced with these couplings built onto their ends by the manufacturer such as tees, elbows etc.
There are also a substantial range of electrofusion saddles now produced that work on the same principle except the operator is required to attach them mechanically through various means until the fusion process has completed and the weld has cooled.
All manufacturers of electrofusion products bar code their couplings/fittings so that the control unit used for performing the welds can be used to scan each item, automatically determining the weld parameters and performing the weld without any input needed from the operator.
Some manufacturers still require dedicated control units and any particular control unit may not have the capacity to weld any coupling/saddle. A number of control units may require a period to cool down prior to commencing a new weld. This is generally accepted to be equal to the cool down time for the item last welded.
Fittings up to 1000mm.
SOCKET FUSIONThis process is one where a metal socket is mounted on one side of a heater plate which heats the circumference of whatever is inserted into it along with a spigot attached to the opposite side of the heater plate that is inserted into a socket fitting heating the socket.
After a calculated time the heater unit is removed and the two heated ends are brought together to form a fusion weld and is allowed to cool.
The heating/cooling time varies depending on the size of the items being welded.
Socket fusion fittings are generally not available for polyethylene.
This process is extensively used with polyethylene in the fabrication of reducing tees, manifolds etc. where a pipe or fitting is inserted into the wall of a larger pipe.
It is generally accepted that any insertion should not have an SDR of greater than SDR 17 and not exceed 1/3 the size of the pipe it is being inserted into. This joint only attains .8 of the strength and pressure rating of the parent material. Insertions commonly have a lower SDR rating than the pipe they are being inserted into.
Accepted practise is to reinforce this weld externally by applying an extrusion weld.
Insertions up to 160mm diameter are possible using socket fusion.
EXTRUSION WELDINGThis is the process of using heat in the form of hot air on the polyethylene material requiring welding before applying a filler (pre heated fillet or slug) usually sourced from pe welding wire or pellets.
There are various mechanical aids used to create these fillets that can range from a hand held wire welders to extruders.
This form of welding is considered to attain .6 of the strength and pressure rating of the parent material although this could only realistically be achieved by a skilled operator.
There are many uses for extrusion welding but primarily it is used for the joining of sheet.
MECHANICALThese fittings are generally known as compression fittings that pipes are inserted into and locked onto the pipe usually sealed by an “O” ring. They are easily installed and have the added advantage of being easily disassembled and reused elsewhere.
Fittings up to 160mm.

PN: Metre/Head ie. PN4 = 40 metre Head SDR (Standard Dimension Ratio): Diameter / Wall Thickness The derating due to temperature for Themapipe is less as it absorbs less UV Radiation. The temperature of the material being carried by these pipes still derates Thermapipe and all other pipes as stated above. Please contact us for further details.

Mitre and Segmented bends commonly have a radius
of 1.5 D but can be produced at any radius over 1.5
D at any degree between 1’ and 180’.
Typically to enable a 1.5 D radius Bends 1’ to 30’
are mitre bends ( 2 segments) Bends 31 to 60’ are
segmented bends (3 segments ) Bends 61’ to 90’
are segmented bends (4 segments) 180’ Bends are
segmented Bends (7 segments).
Smaller radii are possible using fewer segments ie 3
segment 90’.
We have listed dimensions for 2 D bends as an
alternative to sweep bends and these could be made
with at least one extra segment if required.
