Recommendations: If you like fine wines North Wales Wines & Spirits is definitely the place to go. We bought a bottle of their Desiderius Pongracz Sparkling Wine, for a treat, it was absolutely to die for. In our opinion every bit as good as Don Perignon and decidedly cheaper, their Cava is also delicious and very reasonably priced. Also had a couple of great buys from Conwy Outdoor Shop, again at brilliant pric-es. With one thing and another we have been spoiling ourselves this month.

"When our feet hurt, we hurt all over". Socrates
F eet are an extraordinary part of the human body. Made up of twenty six bones in each, multitudes of
ligaments, muscles and nerves they are a feat of natural engineering and work very hard. It‟s said that the average person walks about 10,000 steps a day or the equivalent of five times around the earth in a lifetime. Since feet are in constant use and bearing our entire weight on a daily basis, they deserve to be treated with care, yet are often neglected. This neglect can lead to lots of problems, some of them painful. It‟s estimated that approximately 70% of the population will suffer foot pain at some point during their lives.
Chiropodists, also known as podiatrists, are highly trained foot specialists, and as such they are the best people to visit for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of many foot disorders. From verrucas and ingrown toenails to bunions and general pain, chiropodists treat a wide variety of conditions.
Foot troubles can usually be traced to three basic causes - inherited, illness and ill-fitting shoes. Foot structure leading to bunions, ingrown nails and heel pain can be inherited. Signs of illnesses such as diabetes, arthritis and circulatory diseases often show first in the feet. But the most common culprit is badly-fitting shoes,
specifically high heels, which is why more women than men develop foot problems. Poorly-fitted footwear can produce bunions and corns which are painful and unsightly. All pain is debilitating and foot pain more so as every single step you take will be agonising. There are numerous origins for foot pain and a chiropodist will be able to diagnose the cause and how to correct it. A simple remedy for some problems is the use of
orthotics. These are specially-made supportive insoles for shoes which help re-align your foot, therefore relieving the cause of the pain. These insoles are particularly effective in relieving foot fatigue and aches.
Feet contain around 250,000 sweat glands, excreting as much as half a pint of moisture every day. Some people‟s feet produce more. Even excessively sweaty feet can be remedied by a visit to a chiropodist. This is something not to be sniffed at.
Most chiropody treatment referrals come from your GP but if free NHS treatment isn‟t available you can still find a chiropodist privately. Make sure the practitioner is fully qualified and registered with the Health Professionals Council.
The key to healthy feet is prevention or early detection. If you suffer from foot problems, get them treated by a chiropodist before permanent damage occurs. Without treatment, foot pain can travel causing problems in the knees, lower back, and other joints and muscles. Good foot health is vital to enjoying a comfortable and pain free life. Be good to your feet and they'll be good to you.

T ulips are the national flower of Iran and Turkey. First cultivated by the Turks in 1000AD, tulips were introduced to Europe in the middle of the 16th century. In Holland they
became the subject of a phenomenon called „Tulipomania‟. Due to their rarity, only a few very rich people could afford them, which meant the plants became status symbols.
When the Tulipomania bubble burst, the Dutch creat-ed the successful bulb-growing business they have now. There are now over 3,000 varieties of cultivated tulips in almost every colour and size imaginable.
The natural habitat of tulips is in mountainous regions so they need a period of cold while they are dormant.
Plant bulbs in November or December, before the first frost. Tulips bloom in almost any well drained soil, but mix in plenty of organic matter and fertiliser to encour-age vivacious growth. After flowering, deadhead and leave the plant to die down naturally, so energy is sent to the bulb to store for use next spring.
Some people are allergic to tulip bulbs, so wear
Tulips
gloves while handling them. However, during World War II, people in Holland were forced to eat tulips. Apparently this was an unpleasant experience with the taste described as “wet sawdust”. It was also a risky undertak-ing as some parts of the bulb are poisonous.
A striking spring bulb, with an interesting history, tulips are in flower this month
GARDENING
How to be green-fingered the easy way
I f the thought of ‗growing your own‘ appeals but you have no idea where to start, here are a few tips to get you off the ground (literally!)
1) Start small – Don‘t make grand plans for your whole garden, take it a bit at a time. Invest in a few window boxes or trays and start with some mixed salad leaves or herbs – it‘s a great way to see fast results and gain confidence. 2) Location, location, location – If you‘re opting for a veg patch, think about its positioning. For the best results, you‘ll need sunlight and protection from the wind. Make sure it‘s accessible too – you don‘t want to be treading all over your plants while you‘re weeding! 3) Which soil type? - Buy a soil testing kit. It‘s a worthy investment and easy to do. Once you know what you‘re working with, add some rotted-down manure and compost to increase the soil‘s quality. Rake out any stones and pull up all weeds. 4) Build a raised bed – The garden-in-a-frame idea makes a vege-table patch much easier to maintain. Not only do they make plant-ing in straight lines easier, they also warm up quicker than the ground meaning a bumper harvest for you! 5) Easy to grow crops – Tomatoes, salad leaves, beans, strawber-ries – they‘re all low maintenance and give quick results. Sow your seeds in neat drills – it‘ll help you make the most of the room available.
6) Label plants - Keep a record of what you‘ve planted, where and when. Things like tomatoes may need feeding and beans will require poles and string to climb. Keep an eye on weeds and water regularly if it doesn‘t rain. 7) Keep seeds from your plants for next year - Make notes about what you‘d like to try next season and write down any tips you‘ve picked up. Why not think about buying a greenhouse, or perhaps pop a fruit tree in the garden for a delicious stock of fruit? Don‘t stop at peas and carrots – have a go at some more exotic crops such as blueberries, figs and peppers!

Can You Help - Hidden Hearing Train a Hearing Dog
HELP US TO TRAIN A
HEARING DOG
H idden Hearing is proud to announce a national campaign to raise funds to help train another new hearing dog with the
dedicated charity Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. A fully trained dog plays a vital role in alerting its owner to spe-cial sounds such as alarms and bells, whether at home, at work or in public buildings.
Throughout April and May, Hidden Hearing will be donat-ing £5 on behalf of each customer who takes a free hear-ing assessment at one of its 77 hearing centres nation-wide,. All the donations will be made by Hidden Hearing, one of the UK‘s leading specialists in hearing health care, without cost to customers.
The charity relies totally on the generosity of people, companies and organisations to fund its work. There are approximately 650,000 severely or profoundly deaf people in the UK who could benefit from a hearing dog. Since the charity was founded in 1982 it has trained around 1,500 hearing dogs and placed them with deaf recipients around the country.
―£7,500 helps us to train just one dog‖, explained Anna Banyard of the charity. ―Training takes around 18 months from puppy to fully trained hearing dog, and it‘s an inten-
sive programme that demands a lot of specialist expertise. We‘re really thrilled that Hidden Hearing has become one of our regular partners to help fund the training pro-gramme. Without support like this, our dogs just wouldn‘t be able to make the difference that they do for people.‖
―We‘re delighted to be supporting Hearing Dogs for Deaf People once again this year‖, said Graham Lane, Manag-ing Director of Hidden Hearing. ―We have become one of their regular fund raising partners and have seen at first hand the great difference that a well-trained hearing dog can make for its owner. All too often we take for granted those everyday sounds that let us know we need to take action – from something as simple as the door bell to something as life-saving as a smoke alarm. These dogs make a massive difference to give their owners greater independence, confidence and security.‖
Hidden Hearing is a UK leader in hearing healthcare, and has been in business for 40 years with 77 state-of-the-art hearing centres throughout England, Scotland and Wales.

Recipe of the Month: by Peter Osborne - The Big Chef
Queen of Puddings This is one of the classic dishes, it‘s so easy to do and will amaze your friends, both looks and taste. Serves 6 Takes 50 minutes 500 ml milk 55 g butter 115 g cake crumbs Grated rind of 1 orange Grated rind of 1 lemon 55 g sugar 4 egg yolks, beaten 2 egg whites, beaten until stiff 55 g strawberry jam 115 g strawberries, sliced Icing sugar for dusting MERINGUE: 2 egg whites 60 g sugar Preheat oven to 325F (165C).
Put milk and butter into a flameproof casserole dish and
heat gently until butter melts. Stir in cake crumbs and lemon and orange rinds.
Whisk in sugar and egg yolks. Fold in egg whites. Put
dish in a deep roasting pan and pour in enough boiling water to come halfway up side of dish. Bake 45 to 50 minutes or until set.
Mix together jelly and strawberries and spread over top
of pudding. Remove pudding from water.
Next to make the meringue, use a clean, dry whisk to
beat the egg whites to the stiff-peak stage, then whisk in the caster sugar and then divide this meringue mixture between each pudding, piling it up into high peaks.
Finally, sprinkle a teaspoon of caster sugar over the tops
of the puddings and bake for a further 10-15 minutes on the centre shelf again until the tops are golden brown.
Tip of the month I hate garlic presses. They are great in what they do but then you have to wash them!! A new toothbrush is ideal for cleaning it out properly, but break the handle in two so that nobody takes it to the bathroom by mistake!!!!
Happy Cooking!!! Peter

L ocal and Community History Month lasts throughout May with the aim of increasing awareness of local history,
promoting history in general to the local community and encouraging all members of the community to participate.
Activities take place across the UK and include trips, library exhibitions and local lectures. It‟s a great way for groups to highlight local history and for local people to get involved.
History is all around you. It‟s fascinating to discover the past that is right on your doorstep. Some of it may not be immediately obvious as so many changes have taken place over the years, but with a little research you can discover a whole different aspect to your hometown.
Some towns capitalise on their history, especially if well known events happened there, such as Hastings, Avebury or York. Others have equally interesting pasts, but are not necessarily as famous, for instance, Evesham - the site of a battle in 1265.
Perhaps you live in a place with an unusual name. Place names are often an indication of the original settlement. There are several towns with the name Whitchurch in Britain and this simply means White Church. Other names are more obscure and captivating, for example Mudford Sock in Somerset and Wig Wig in Shropshire.
On a more local or domestic level, you may live in a house with a history or notice intriguing buildings in your area. Perhaps there is a nearby mansion or estate that
piques your interest about the family who built and lived there.
Go for a walk and see what you can find. Open your eyes and look past the new shops and buildings to what may have been there before. Often the only historical building left is a church, but if you look harder, you may discover all sorts of interesting architecture which will lead you to research further.
In order to find out more about the history of your area the best place to start is by visiting your local library. Most libraries have a local studies section and include more than books on the subject. Libraries, especially the large or central ones, have other documentary material too, in the form of old newspapers and maps. You should also be able to find out if your district has a local history society, which is a great way to discover more information and share your curiosity with like-minded people. Also consider visiting your local museum for interesting artefacts and photographs showing how your town or village has changed over time.
Use this month to further your knowledge and interest in your locale. There are plenty of opportunities to pursue a new hobby and discover a new world on your doorstep.

W ith so many of us facing financial insecurity and fears over our job prospects, it‘s hardly surprising that greater numbers than ever are suffering from stress. Even teenagers find themselves stressed these days with the
pressure to do well in exams. We cannot do much to change the economic climate or the need to succeed but there are steps we can take to ease the emotional fallout. First of all, what does stress look like? If you find any of the following are ongoing problems in your or your teenager‘s life, then you or they might be suffering from stress: Irritability and seeming ‗down‘ Nail biting or hair tugging/chewing Oversensitivity to criticism Sleep patterns disrupted Upset stomach or change in eating patterns Increase in alcohol use or smoking Difficulty in concentrating Recognising the symptoms and accepting that you are in a stressed state is half the battle. The next step is learning to cope with the condition. It‘s quite possible that you cannot do anything about the underlying causes, especially if it is finance and/or work related, but you can learn to ease the symptoms. Make simple changes to your life. Don‘t try to do everything on this list all in one go, you‘ll only add to your stress levels. Pick one thing you feel you can incorporate easily and do that. You‘ll feel the benefits almost immediately. Accept help from others – you don‘t have to do everything yourself. Most of us try to do too much, feeling we have to constantly prove our worth.
Stop trying to multitask and concentrate on each job in isolation until completed. By juggling too many tasks at once we can easily feel that we aren‘t accomplishing anything. Pick the most important item that has to be finished and deal with that first. Making lists and ticking items off as you do them can add to a sense of achievement. It‘s all too easy to get to the end of a day and only see the things that still have to be done, rather than congratulating yourself on what you have achieved. Take regular breaks at work. Even if all you do is walk around the office, or go downstairs and come back up again, moving away from your desk gives your mind chance to relax. Find someone safe to talk to. We all need to put our fears into words occasionally. For teenagers it can really help by sharing their feel-ings on Facebook or other social sites. Let your anger out by hitting a cushion or by going somewhere alone and screaming. Get lots of fresh air – this will aid relaxation. Have ten minute ‗you‘ sessions. Set aside definite times when only you matter. This could be in the bath, or going for a walk alone, or anywhere where you can switch off the outside world and let your mind wander freely. Walk away from critical people. Don‘t allow others to destroy your self-confidence. When under stress, it is all too easy to believe negative comments, even when they clearly bear little relation to reality. If life‘s really getting you down and you‘ve started to feel like you just can‘t cope, don‘t be afraid to see your doctor. They expect to deal with wellbeing issues as well as physical problems.

ODE to a Cabbage
I ‘ll bet you‘ve never seen a cabbage like the one that I have seen
It is very very large and very very green It‘s growing in a garden up on Penrhynside This veg is nearly 2 feet high and almost 4 feet wide You‘ve seen a fresh spring cabbage or a very nice Savoy. But you‘ve never ever seen the like of the one grown by our Joy You can find caterpillars on cabbages, also slugs and flies But the one Joy‘s grown is perfect and should really win a prize You can do a lot with cabbage, you can fry it steam it too You can put it raw on coleslaw or boil it in a stew Joy‘s grown many other veg of every shape and size Some of them are so grotesque; you‘d not believe your eyes Just picture now this cabbage sitting in the ground With the other puny specimen growing all around This cabbage is so very large; it won‘t get through the door They‘ll have to take a knife to it and cut it into four For growing super cabbage, our Joy has passed the test So move over Alan Titchmarsh, you‘ve been beaten by the BEST

Motoring - Porsche Cayman S by James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine
Porsche Cayman S
R uthless, efficient and menacing,
there‟s nothing quite like an ice white Porsche Cayman to focus the mind. This test takes place on a track near York and the mid-sized Por-sche is seriously entertaining.
There‟s no drama, no rubber burning, back-end wagging show-boating with this tool, that‟s for sure. One would imagine the word fun doesn‟t even have a German translation. The Cayman – a car which sits just below the 911 and above the Boxster in the firm‟s range – is about point-to-point; getting you from A-to-B as fast as possible.
After a few laps it‟s abundantly clear this is a very competent track machine. It puts several car lengths on the Nissan 370Z we were testing it against and that‟s before we‟d even covered half a lap. And boy does it grip, scything through bends with scalpel-edged precision. If you miss an apex there‟s no one to blame here but the man behind the wheel.
The Cayman is packed with performance goodies too – ones that make fast a science, not an art form. First up is launch control: click the right buttons, hold your foot on the brake, nail the throttle and wait for it to level at 5,000rpm, then simply take your foot off the pedal. It‟s unbelievably effective, matching power with grip to thrust you forwards with the efficiency of a super computer.
Of course this only works alongside the marque‟s seven-speed PDK gearbox. Don‟t ask what PDK stands for, it‟s unpronounceable by humans, just be satisfied that all you need to know is it works, much like everything else in the Porsche, fantastically well. It‟s a dual clutch set-up, not dissimilar to VW‟s DSG unit, which prepares the next cog you want to use in anticipation of the next shift.
Yes, that sounds hugely complicated, and I have no doubt it probably is, but it‟s safe to say it makes gear changes very swift matters indeed. That‟s not to say it isn‟t without its faults. Most noticeable are the button toggles for up and down on the steering wheel which work the opposite way to that which you‟d expect. They‟re also far more awkward to get the hang of compared to paddles favoured by other manufactur-
ers.
In most cases it‟s far easier to use the gear lever that can be pushed up and down for shifts instead of the buttons. But despite this small handicap, the Cayman still manages to edge it out on track. The Cayman S produces 320bhp from its 3.4-litre unit, but it‟s the way it manages to translate those numbers into forward inertia so effective- ly that seriously impresses.
Problem is, you always get the feeling you‟re only half of the picture. The Cay- man‟s so honed and
sorted it takes away a large part of the enjoyment. After a day‟s fun and frolics on track I‟m left
feeling a little cold – and for a car from a maker like Porsche
that‟s not a good situation to be in, especially if you‟ve just shelled out £44,000
for one.
Don‟t get me wrong, the Cayman S is a devastating machine that covers ground extremely quickly, in pretty much anyone‟s hands. It sounds superb, steers like few cars you‟ll ever experience and is packed with technolo-gy. It‟ll also catapult you around a track, or damp B-road, faster than you‟d ever think possible.
But, the thing is, you won‟t realise it – and in my eyes what‟s the point of going really
quickly if you don‟t feel like you‟re going really quickly? It‟s not as though you‟re trying to qualify for a grand prix is it, where lap times are all. This is about life; enjoying every one of those pounds you spent on your car, every time you get behind the wheel. And in the German offering, I just don‟t know whether I would.
