Welcome to the next edition of Yesmag, we are now in our fourth year, thank you to everyone for your continued support and ideas during the last 3 years, it has helped us all at Yesmag to keep on top.

I hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year, I personally had a quiet one with the family, I spent Christmas morning watching my dogs rip open their doggy stockings, it was so funny to watch.

Well another year here and plenty of things happening, to start it off we have Valentine's day on 14th February, I hope you all have your treats planned for your loved ones, then on the 1st March we have St David's day and Mothering Sunday on the 10th March, please take a look at our what's on page to see what events are happening in the area during these special days.

Tunis

Barely three hours from London, Tunis greets

you with scenes straight out of the Arabian Nights, plenty of Mediterranean charm and elegant French-style boulevards. Winters are mild, summers sunny and hot but cooled by sea breezes which sweep across the lakes glistening between the capital and its sandy coastline.

Fifteen miles of beaches fringe the upmarket suburbs, dotted with open spaces and clusters of pines and mimosa. You can ride a horse or a camel on the sand, swim, sail, shop for souvenirs and squeeze in a little sightseeing but the ultimate indulgence is joining the locals in a hammam, to be scrubbed lobster red from head to toe, or unwinding in a glamorous spa with the latest beauty treatment or sea water therapy, tailored to your needs. Thalassotherapy is a French legacy but comes at a fraction of the cost across the water.

Tunisia has been independent since 1956 but the New Town designed by the French retains its Parisian feel. Named after the country’s first President, the Habib Bourguiba Avenue stretches for a straight scenic mile, a mini Champs-Elysées with wide pavements and a

central promenade where flower stalls and newspaper kiosks splash colour under the trees. It’s a place to stroll in the shade, enjoy a spot of window shopping, wonder at the cream-coloured cathedral or the rococo theatre, and sit under the parasols of Café de Paris to watch the world go by. There are trendy stores and boutiques, traditional ‘pâtisseries’ and a free-standing clock tower mirrored in the fountains. The stylish Avenue de France leads to the Sea Gate, no longer lapped by the receding waters of the lake, but marking the meeting point of two cultures, Europe on one side, Africa on the other.

Step through and within seconds, you are swept off your feet, lured relentlessly into the medina and a head-spinning maze of colours and scents. In the cool alleyways of the souks, men chisel silver and gold, embroider slippers, carve wood and brass, and every stall brings new temptation. Perfumes, carpets, spices, leather belts,

pottery, silk, toy camels or aphrodisiacs, you’re sure to find anything you ever wanted and more. The air smells of couscous and mint tea and the bubbling of hookah pipes follows you along the way. With its medieval bazar, its secluded mansions and minarets peeping above the rooftops, this Old Town is a World Heritage Site, claiming over 700 monuments. Visitors make their way to the Great Mosque, the Museum of Popular Arts and Tourbet el Bey, the mausoleum of last dynasty.

Meanwhile, across the lake, history lovers gather around the ruins of ancient Carthage, scattered like blossom in the wind from the Roman Baths to the remains of the Punic city on Byrsa Hill. For others, the Bardo Museum is the top attraction, with its stunning collection of Roman mosaics and classical statues, but artists prefer to seek inspiration in Sidi Bou Said, a pretty blue and white village with wrought iron balconies as delicate as lace. Up there on a breezy clifftop, little disturbs the peace but birds twittering in the trees. Far below, fishermen cast their nets in the Gulf of Tunis while in the distance the city stretches as far as you can see, familiar and exotic all in one, flourishing at the crossroads of Europe and Africa.

Have you ever thrown away something you think

you don’t need any more and then some time later you find a use for it, and it’s too late? It happened to the whole country in the years 1963-1970, when we closed a third of our railway stations and 4,000 of our 18,000 miles of railway line. The axe man always blamed for this carnage is Dr Richard Beeching, chairman of the British Railways Board from 1962-1965 and author of the report, ‘The Reshaping of Britain’s Railways’, published in March 1963, which started the slaughter. He died in 1985 but who was he? And was he entirely to blame?A physicist by discipline, Beeching rose through the ranks of ICI to become an expert in production efficiency. In 1959, he was seconded to a committee of the British Transport Commission which wanted to cut the railway network’s losses. These had risen from £15.6m in 1956, just after the ambitious modernisation plan that started the replacement of steam by diesel and electric, to £42m in 1960. Beeching was a great advocate of deep cuts in the network, clashing with committee chairman Sir Ivan Stedeford – a stance which

earned him the favour of Transport Minister Ernest Marples. Marples was an apostle of road transport – a fact entirely unconnected with his family firm’s road-building contracts: he sold his shares when he took office, albeit with a clause allowing him to buy them back at the same price. Dr Beeching was given the chair of the BRB (at a salary more than twice that of the Prime Minister’s) and soon published his report which was duly rushed into action.The following year Labour came to power on a promise to stop the bitterly unpopular programme, but, lured by the promise of easy savings, it reneged. Beeching himself returned to ICI in late 1965 after the summary rejection of a second report advising even deeper cuts; but Labour continued to implement the 1963 recommendations right up to 1970.The promise was a cruel illusion. The 70,000 jobs, 2,600 country stations, 300,000 goods wagons, and 4,000 miles of branch line that disappeared saved nothing, and in 1970 British Rail lost not £42m but £100m. Beeching may have been a production expert, but he had no understanding of logistics. Whilst many lines may have

been unprofitable (30% of them carried just 1% of all passengers, while 50% of all stations raised just 2% of overall ticket revenue) they fed the main lines and had made them profitable. Freight carriage, too, dwindled as large factories lost the branch lines that connected their sidings to the network and so, took to the roads.It’s suspected that Beeching’s recommendations were more political than operational. Apart from Marples’s rumoured venality, powerful forces both in business and the trade unions favoured road; and the railway, with its record of failure (3,300 miles of branch line had already been closed in the previous 15 years), had no counter-argument. Beeching did not consider the huge efficiency savings available through slashing the over-manning of the branch network: his brief was to cut, and cut he did. He described his programme as “surgery, not mad chopping”: he was certainly not the kind of surgeon you would want operating on you.We could do with those 4,000 miles of line now, as our roads strain and burst. The moral of this story is – don’t ever chuck things out, because you never know when they might come in handy.

Designing your kitchenUsing an architect or interior designer is the most expensive option. Check whether they price per hour or for the job, and what’s included – from simple outline sketches, to detailed drawings, assistance with planning applications, specifying suppliers, appointing contractors and supervising the entire process. At the other end of the scale, you could design it yourself for free, as well as source all components such as units, worktops and appliances. Remember that this will mean managing the project every step of the way.

Many people go for the middle option of using their kitchen supplier’s design and installation service. If you’re asked to take your own measurements, be careful: even in a new-build, walls are not always true and the surfaces flat. Take at least three measurements at floor, work-surface and wall unit height, and work to the

smallest width.

Alternatively, if you are using a mid-range or luxury kitchen supplier, you may be asked to pay a few hundred pounds for them to measure up and produce a set of drawings specific to your room.

Comparing prices What’s included when you buy a kitchen? It varies widely, from a basic delivery of flat-packed cupboards to an all-encompassing service.

When comparing prices, ensure that you know exactly what you’re buying – a cheap option can cost considerably more if you end up paying for extra work. Ask the right questions. Will they dispose of existing fittings? Prepare plumbing and electrical work? Carry out associated building work? Fit floor and wall finishes? What about final decorating, electrical work and other carpentry such as shelving? Who will fit worktops, sinks, taps, appliances and extras such as plate racks and knife holders? Is there a guarantee and after-

sales service?

Checking for qualityThe main difference between buying an off-the-shelf kitchen from one of the budget suppliers and a pricier kitchen from a mid-price or luxury supplier is that the former will give you machine-made units that come off a factory line, whereas the latter offer hand-built cupboards by cabinet-makers. Machine-made units are not necessarily poor quality, though they will have “plant-on” doors that sit in front of the frame, rather than “in-frame” doors, which are individually made to fit perfectly inside their frames.

Doors Solid-wood doors with traditional mortise and tenon joints are often considered the highest quality. In-frame doors may expand and contract with the humidity (though the thicker they are, the less chance there is of this). A good supplier will offer an after-sales service to check their fitting after a few months. Veneered doors are usually

cheaper, and are considered easier to maintain. Check whether painted doors are machine-sprayed, or painted by hand with a brush.

CarcassesTop-of-the-range carcasses are made of solid wood. Next-level-down ones are usually made from plywood or MDF veneer, while cheaper ones are made from chipboard, sometimes with just hardboard backs. Check the thickness of the chipboard – 18-20mm is a good guide.

HingesPoor hinges are usually made from thin metal and will wear so thin that the doors hang unevenly. While many people are happy with good quality Blum or Blumstyle hinges (concealed, adjustable and available in a variety of specifications), solid brass

butts are better. Check whether hinges open through a complete 180 degree angle.

WorktopsAt the budget end of the market, very cheap laminate worktops can burn, scratch and wear out quickly. High-pressure laminates are more durable than low-pressure ones; check that the underside is sealed to prevent water damage from appliances beneath. In a more luxurious kitchen package, you’ll be offered

solid wood (at least 4cm thick is best), granite (3cm), man-made solid surfaces (such as Corian) or even glass or concrete. They’re more expensive, but they will last longer and look better.

A last word: installationA good fitter can make an average kitchen appear fantastic, whereas poor fitting will make the most luxurious kitchen look terrible. Bear this in mind if you’re planning on doing it yourself. If you’re using a fitter, ask to see a kitchen they’ve installed previously. When buying an expensive, bespoke kitchen, it’s wise to use the company’s own fitters (you may not have an option to do otherwise). Otherwise, finding a good fitter is, as always, a question of recommendation.

A new hue can take years off your age, emphasise your best features and leave your complexion looking radiant.

It’s crucial to get it right though, because if you pick the wrong colour you can be left with an unflattering and disappointing result.

Your hair is undoubtedly your best accessory, so it’s crucial to think carefully before doing anything drastic or making a hasty change.

Here’s our guide to what to consider before you reach for the hair dye.

Start with Your Skin ToneWhether you fancy being a blonde, brunette or redhead, it’s important to identify whether your natural complexion is warm or cool. This determines what colour base you should look for when you pick your shade.

To find out which category you fall into, try this simple test:

Stand in front of a mirror in natural light with no make-up on. Hold a white garment by your face, then do the same with a cream coloured one. Decide which looks better with your colouring, does the white enhance your eyes and skin? If so, you’re cool.

If the cream looks best, then you’re warm.

Consider your jewellery; does gold suit you better than silver? If so, your skin tone is warm. If silver looks stunning, then you’re cool.

Cool ColoursIf your skin colouring is cool, you should choose an ash, mink or even platinum blonde shade if you fancy a blonde hue.

Brunette colours with an ashy base work best with cool skins. Think coffee coloured browns, medium brown with ashy highlights or even black.

Stick to burgundy, mahogany and purple based reds - they will look fabulous with your skin.

Warm ColoursIf you have warm colouring, then you’ll look great with golden blonde colours and caramel highlights.

For brunettes, choose chestnut or golden browns with warm tones for a stunning look.

If you fancy standing out from the crowd with vibrant red locks, go for copper and auburn shades. Any red with a golden or orange base colour works well.

Have a Good Hair DayWe’ve all had our fair share of hair disasters over the years and one of the main causes is changing our hair colour at home.

If you plan on going more than two shades lighter or darker than your natural hair colour, then it really is essential that you visit a salon to have your hair done professionally.

Remember that many colours bought for home use won’t necessarily look the same on your hair as they do on the box. If you have been dying your hair a dark shade for a long time there may be a build-up of colour on the lengths that could leave you with uneven results.

Blonde hues are very fashionable at the moment but lightening dark hair can be damaging. Logs are a bit of a science. We’ve found oak, beech and ash to be best, in order of preference, but conifer wood does the job too if it’s properly seasoned. Our usual supplier is about five miles away and by the time we’ve unloaded his trailer and I’ve stacked the wood in the garage, I’m usually so warmed up that I try to convince Anne we can skip the fire for a day. Then I’m literally and figuratively out in the cold.

Using local and sustainable sources of wood fits in perfectly with our Better Life approach. When we lost our cypress tree, after a succession of gales split the main trunk so that I could look right through it, nothing was wasted. Even the smaller branches were stored and dried out for a year to make a plentiful supply of kindling. It was a sad day indeed though - not least for the chickens, who once escaped their compound and sought asylum in the upper branches, in a series of impressive short take-offs.

The previous year, our ash tree had to come down because it was pushing against a neighbour’s garage wall. That also served us well, a year later. Even so, I never feel good about losing a tree. Not only do our remaining trees provide an important habitat for birds and other wildlife, they also give us some privacy in the garden, so the neighbours can’t see how poorly the last of the chard is doing.

As our gradual conversion from urbanites to ruralites has progressed, we have become expert in the art of foraging for kindling. When you know where to look, just like love, it’s all around you. For example, a local farm shop often has a supply of unwanted wooden fruit boxes. We’ve also found hidden treasure in skips - always with the owner’s permission. And once, when our foraging fame spread, a neighbour alerted us to a pub renovation a couple of villages away, where we managed to fill the

back of the car with wood that would otherwise have become landfill.

A wood merchant has occasionally furnished us with offcuts and sawdust for the chickens, in exchange for eggs, which seems a pretty good deal all round. And of course, the nearby woods are a boon. Every time there’s a gale, we’re off into the woods, rucksacks at the ready - combining exercise with recycling. I think the villagers are used to us now, although I did once hear someone singing Good King Wenceslas - the part about a poor man gathering winter fuel.

It’s less about saving a pound or two and more about being consistent in our philosophy. There’s a certain delight in making use of something that no one else wants, whether it’s wooden offcuts, windfall or abandoned and broken pallets, especially when it also helps to reduce our fuel bills. I like to think of us as the Wombles of Wood.

After just ten minutes, battling with an ever steepening incline and with the vegetation becoming thicker by the minute, Tom was about to admit defeat when suddenly his feet lost their traction. The edge of the path if you could describe it as a path, had given way to a crumbling edge of stone, loose shrub and God knows what evil mass of shallow rooted thorn bushes, most of which went along with him for the ride.Then it was three seconds of sheer panic.He fell, downwards, slipping and sliding, shouting out, grasping at stones and saplings. It seemed to last forever, the feeling of helpless fear, not knowing where he would finally stop. Three seconds was a lot of falling time. It was enough time to find himself several metres down an escarpment; his hands ripped open and his trousers torn in several places. He could taste blood. The shock was the worst feeling, and Tom lay flat on

his back, staring at the sky, fighting the nausea, his heart racing.

‘You okay down there?’ Helga shouted.‘Yeah. No… not really. Just give me a minute.’Slowly, Tom shifted himself upright. Impossible to fathom where he may have ended up had he not stopped falling. Looking at the horrible gash on his leg, he felt almost suffocated by a huge, childish well of emotion. It had been years since he’d given in to sobbing, and he wasn’t about to start now. Interrupted by another burst of Live and Let Die, Tom managed to get hold of his phone, grateful for the sobering distraction.

Charles calling… no real surprise there. How did he handle all of this? In reality, and hypothetically, he was halfway to killing himself. Should he jump before he was pushed? Tom kicked at some of the loose scrub, and a shower of small stones went hurtling down noisily, then fell silent.‘Charles! What can I do for you?’ Tom said loudly, unable to keep the heavy sarcasm at bay. He’d wanted to be rude for years, and this was his chance.‘Monday morning; my office 9am,’ Charles snarled.Tom pinched the bridge of his nose. ‘I… er, that won’t be necessary. We both know what this is about, so I’ll say it first. I’m not sorry in the least about your stupid, mindless flow charts, but I am sorry I ever started an affair with your niece. I resign!’

An angry tirade burst down the speaker. Tom flipped it shut, and without thinking, flung the phone with all its incriminating messages and that shaming picture of Melanie, the one where she was wearing just three Post-It notes; to a certain death. He heard it smash, and allowed a breath of relief to escape his parched mouth. Yes, that felt good, cathartic even.

Something very intriguing happened during the

glorious sporting summer of 2012 when the Olympics found London. For the first time in as long as anyone could remember, celebrity culture lost its hold on kids’ imaginations and Da Yoof turned their attention to the positive role models of the 2012 Games. Here were a group of men and women not only driven by a burning desire to be the best they possibly could in their chosen field, but do so purely for the purpose of achieving greatness, and not because it would get them free Jaegerbombs at G-A-Y or a photo of themselves exposing their pants climbing out of a taxi in The Celebrity Gazette.That in itself would have been enough, but this promise of greatness was swiftly followed by the delivery of greatness, and when kids went back to school in September, corridors buzzed with excitable sports chatter. Britain even dared to dream that the values of a lost generation might finally be shifting. Suddenly children aspired to follow in the footsteps of Usain, Jessica and Mo – ndividuals who exude the importance of hard work, talent and genuine ambition – as opposed to slumping slack-jawed in front of TOWIE.How long would this last? Was it a blip in the cultural radar, or an enduring change? When the coming of autumn ushered back the thunderous rumble of the X Factor pop juggernaut, would the shimmering memory of the Games eventually disappear beneath the relentless, auto-tuned din of yet another slew of hapless pop-droids?Now that we’re a few months down the line, I’m

not sure I could say either way. According to a recent Telegraph survey, twenty-five years ago the most popular career ambition amongst school-age children was teaching. Now, while teaching has just about held onto its place in the Top Ten, it has given up the number one spot to sports star, closely followed by pop star and famous actor. I’d be interested to know if the success of London 2012 has had any kind of impact on those statistics. I can’t talk, of course - when I was fourteen I wanted to play in a rock band. I’m still doing it, professionally, in my early thirties, and I’ve often wondered what I’d say if a modern-day version of my teenage self asked for advice on pursuing his dreams.In short, I’d probably say this. Any idiot can follow his dreams. It’s about what you do when the world gets in the way, when things quite simply don’t go the way you expected. What you do in those moments, that’s the real test of character, not to mention the test of whether or not your dreams really counted in the first place. And I’m done. Should probably pop the ol’ soapbox back under the stairs, but - hang on. Kerry Katona just came on the telly.No rest for the wicked… Chris plays piano in South London power-pop band The Lightyears. The Lightyears, voted the UK’s BEST POP/ROCK ACT at the Indy Awards, have played Wembley Stadium, toured across four continents and released a record with Sting’s producer. Tablets are wonderful things, but they can be

pricey: while £400 isn’t much compared to the price of a high-end laptop, it’s still £400. But you don’t need to spend that much to find a perfectly good tablet: in fact, there are good ones for as little as £99.The £99 tablet is Amazon’s Kindle Fire, which dropped from £129 to £99 in November (if it’s gone back up again, don’t worry - you can be sure the price will fall again very soon). While it isn’t exactly state of the art it’s still a perfectly decent tablet for watching videos, playing Angry Birds, using Facebook and so on. If you fancy something a little more powerful but not much more expensive, Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD is very good too. It boasts a much better screen, which is superb for video, and comes with more storage, faster Wi-Fi wireless networking and a faster processor. Prices start at just £159 for the 16GB model.Before you spend £159, though, check out Google’s offering, the Nexus 7. Like the Kindle Fire it’s just £159 for the 16GB model, and as

it’s Google’s own device it’s a proper Android tablet without the customisation that some manufacturers add to the operating system. Once again it’s a seven-inch device with a powerful processor, integrated Wi-Fi wireless networking and good battery life.There are two other £159 tablets to consider: the Kobo Arc and the Nook HD. The former comes from Kobo, Amazon’s main rival in the e-reading sector, and it’s aimed primarily at e-book readers who fancy the odd video, song or bit of web browsing, while the latter is by US bookselling giant Barnes & Noble and hopes to carve a niche offering electronic magazines as well as apps. Technically speaking they’re very good - the Nook HD in particular has a wonderful screen, is very light and easy to use - but tablets rise and fall on the strength of their content libraries and Amazon has the edge in that department. If you want a tablet that has lots of stuff to choose from and which is very easy to use, the Kindle Fire HD will look very attractive; if you’re more techy and want something you can fiddle with too, Google’s

Nexus is more likely to appeal.You can’t mention tablets without mentioning Apple, and while Apple also has a cheap tablet we’re talking cheap in Apple terms: the iPad mini starts at £269, which is significantly more than other seven-ish-inch tablets - although it’s a good bit less than a full-sized iPad. Apple claims it’s “every inch an iPad”, and that’s a fair claim: it’s essentially an iPad 2 crammed into a smaller case, so it runs existing iPad apps quite happily. It has more available tablet apps than any other small tablet, it has a slightly bigger screen - it’s 7.9 inches rather than the rivals’ 7 inches, which doesn’t sound much but makes a big difference when you’re using it - and to our eyes it’s much better-looking and better-engineered than any rival.Is the iPad mini worth the extra cash? If you want a premium tablet, you’re using other Apple products or you’ve already amassed a stack of iOS apps then yes. If not, you may well find that a smaller rival will be just as much fun for considerably less cash.

Satay Vegetable SkewersServes 4 Ready in 30 minutes

If you are short on time but still

want a flavoursome supper then

try these delicious vegetable

kebabs with a lovely spicy peanut

sauce and spring onion noodles.

For non-veggie kebabs replace the

aubergine with cubes of lean pork

or chicken fillet and cook for 15-20

minutes until the meat is cooked

through and lightly charred.

Ingredients:• 100g crunchy peanut butter• 25g creamed coconut,

chopped• 1/2 tsp chilli powder• 1 garlic clove peeled and

crushed• 4 tbsp soy sauce• 3 small peppers (red, green

and yellow), deseeded and cut into 2.5cm pieces

• 4 thick slices of aubergine• 1 large red onion, peeled and

cut into slim wedges• 3 tbsp sesame oil• 4 nests fine egg noodles• 4 spring onions, trimmed and

finely sliced

Tip:If you don’t have a griddle pan cook the kebabs under a pre-heated grill or use a heavy-based shallow frying and add a little oil.

Place the peanut butter, coconut, chilli powder and garlic in a small pan with 180ml water. Heat gently, stirring all the time, for 2-3 minutes until the coconut has dissolved and the sauce has thickened. Remove from the heat, stir in half the soy sauce. Thin down with a little more water to get a pouring consistency, if necessary.

Par-boil the peppers in a pan of boiling water for 2 minutes, drain well and pat dry with kitchen paper. Cut the aubergine slices into quarters. Thread the peppers and aubergine onto 8 pre-soaked wooden skewers with the onion wedges.

Preheat a cast-iron griddle pan until almost smoking. Whisk 2 tbsp of the oil and remaining soy sauce together and brush all over the vegetable kebabs. Cook the kebabs on the hot griddle pan for 6-8 minutes, turning frequently until tender and lightly charred.

Meanwhile, cook the noodles in a large pan of boiling water for 3-4 minutes until just tender. Drain well and toss together with the rest of the sesame oil and the spring onions. Serve the kebabs on the noodles and drizzle over the satay sauce.

For most of us, saying ‘thank you’ is an everyday

occurrence and, face to face at least, the words often trip out of our mouths more out of habit than with genuine meaning. In today’s fast paced world however, far more of our communication is by email, text, phone or social media, and taking the time to acknowledge others’ actions is being overlooked.But expressing your appreciation has a very important psychological role to play for both the person giving and the person receiving.Gratitude is more than just good manners; it reassures others that their help was actually valued and it encourages further reciprocal behaviour. Indeed missing this important step can cause resentment and people can feel snubbed by what may have just been an oversight.You would think that if you’d asked a favour of someone, asking for a second favour would make them feel you were asking too much. However, if you’ve clearly and personally thanked the giver the first time, they’ll feel

good about themselves and towards you, and will be more than willing to help again. Taking the time to tell someone you appreciate their efforts is also beneficial for you. A bit like if you donate to charity you are doing it to benefit others, but you come away feeling positive about yourself and your efforts. Giving feels good.The message does have to be commensurate with the act though. A dismissive ‘thanks’ to a reasonable favour won’t cut it. But a gushing ‘thank you so much, I really do appreciate your help, you are so kind’ to a minor act will sound false and lose its value. But wherever you can, include the person’s name in your message as that’s further endorsement of them as an individual.Also not all ‘thank yous’ are equal. Ask anyone under the age of 16 to produce a handwritten letter to be sent in the post, and their reaction is likely to be ‘why’? After all, there’s the phone, texting and email – much quicker and easier. But actually that’s just the point; such methods are so much easier they don’t

hold as much weight to the recipient. Receiving a letter in the post, with its air of mystery as it lands on the mat, the tangible piece of paper and the very personal handwriting means so much more. It is also much more memorable than a text or email which is instantly forgotten.Not that phone, text and email should be dismissed of course, especially to acknowledge someone you are unlikely to come in contact with again. Better that method than not at all. There are nominated days to show thanks to your nearest and dearest, with birthdays, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and even Valentine’s Day for your ‘significant other’. Again with busy lives, many view having to acknowledge these times as an inconvenience. But put yourself in the other person’s shoes: everyone around them is being appreciated on these occasions, and they want to feel that they are valued by their friends and family too. Remember the gift doesn’t need to be huge, but the gesture means so much.





Don’t Suffer In Silence

Being able to hear is fundamental to our ability to communicate. If we can’t hear, we can’t respond to others nor speak clearly or judge our pitch – try talking to someone with headphones and they’ll shout back at you. But like most of our senses we take our hearing for-granted and only notice it if it starts failing.Most age related hearing loss is not noticeable until later life, but deterioration begins much earlier. You start to lose some of your range as early as in your twenties.Age related hearing loss is much the same as other types of “wear and tear” on the body. Just as hips and knees wear out so does our hearing. Constant exposure to the noisy world we live in gradually wears away at the “nerves” in our ears, reducing their number and the range of sounds that can be picked up. What can you do to protect yourself?Even if you already have some loss, looking after what’s left is imperative. Be aware of situations and environments that can damage your hearing such as: • Playing loud music through

headphones and earphones• Attending loud live music

concerts - even some classical concerts

• Using simple DIY equipment such as hammers and power tools

• Day to day activities such as riding a motorcycle (wind noise – not the engine noise as you might think) or even driving in a car with the window down (some truck and taxi drivers have more pronounced hearing loss in their right ear, nearest the open window)

• Recreational activities such as shooting

So first off, be aware when there may be damaging levels of noise present and if there is, protect your ears. Inexpensive foam earplugs can be purchased from DIY stores and some high street chemists. Most concert venues have free earplugs available, and whilst they rarely offer them to you on arrival, there’s usually a good supply behind the bar. Keep a few pairs in a drawer for use around the house when tackling your latest DIY project too.What if you already have hearing loss?It’s not usually that you can’t hear at all but just that it’s not clear. Often it’s the high frequency sounds that fade

first, such as bleeps and bells. Then it becomes difficult to hear what people are saying when there is background noise such as in crowds or when the television is on.If left undiagnosed or treated, a hearing loss can lead to other problems. Because it’s unclear what has been said, socialising in groups becomes awkward. Sufferers find themselves pretending to laugh at jokes when they didn’t hear the punch-line, or just nodding and smiling and then being embarrassed because the person talking is awaiting an answer. This in turn leads to loss of confidence and feelings of social exclusion. What can be done?It’s really not necessary to – literally – suffer in silence. A simple trip to your GP to arrange a hearing test or to a specialist hearing centre or audiologist will mean your hearing is tested and assessed, usually free of charge. Discrete and almost invisible the latest aids can make such a difference and vastly improve your hearing. You’ll never regain what has gone, but you can make the best of what you have left.

A Passion for Potatoesby Pippa Greenwood

February is the time of year to think about perfect potatoes and smashing spuds. Home grown potatoes are an incredibly good value crop and you’ll soon find that the so-called humble spud is actually a very tasty and extremely versatile vegetable.If you don’t have much space, use a 45cm (18in) diameter pot with a single tuber. Make sure the container is well supplied with drainage holes, fill it two thirds full of compost, pop a tuber in the centre and add a further couple of inches of compost. As foliage appears, add more compost to cover it over and repeat until no more can be added, then keep the container well watered. Most potatoes produce a slightly earlier and somewhat heavier crop if the seed potatoes are allowed to produce small but sturdy sprouts before planting. Stand the tubers widest end uppermost in a seed tray or old egg carton and place these in a cool but frost free spot with plenty of natural light. After a few weeks the sprouts will be about 1cm tall, perfect for planting. What to Grow:• Steamed potatoes are

delicious, especially if cooked the day you lift them. Try Vanessa, Dunluce, Edzell

Blue and Lady Christl for some of the tastiest steamers.

• New potatoes dripping in chives and butter are wonderful. Try Lady Christl, Charlotte, Juliette, Casa Blanca, Nadine and Nicola.

• If you adore mashed potato then try Dunluce, Valour, Maris Bard, Lady Balfour and King Edward.

• If you love your potatoes in their jackets, then try Cara, Lady Balfour, Picasso, Kestrel, King Edward, Desiree and Valor.

• For great roast potatoes try Kestrel, Maris Piper, Desiree, Lady Balfour, Vivaldi and Edzel Blue.

• For the best chips, use Kestrel, King Edward, Maris Peer, Accord, Rooster and Edzel Blue.

Potatoes are divided into ‘earlies’ (first to be harvested) and ‘main crop’, generally larger tubers, harvested later. Try ‘earlies’ if your soil hasn’t been cultivated for several years. ‘Earlies’ are in the ground for less time than main crops and are less likely to suffer from wire-worm attack. ‘Earlies’ are also useful in smaller gardens as they takes less space and are in the ground for a shorter period, giving you the opportunity to grow another fast-maturing crop after the potatoes have

been lifted.No crop is without its share of problems and the fungus responsible for potato blight is sometimes hard to beat, especially in warm, damp years. Generally, ‘earlies’ suffer less with blight and you can select varieties which show resistance to the infection such as Valor, Lady Balfour, Coleen and especially Sarpo Mira and Sarpo Axona.Slugs are also a real menace, tunnelling into the tubers’ flesh and sometimes even hollowing them out completely. The biological control nematode Nemaslug works under the soil surface, has a brilliant effect and poses no threat to wildlife.

If your subconscious is programmed that you are “overweight” or “getting older” or “lazy” or “unable to control your nibbling in the evening” or “a chocoholic” then that is the auto programme that is controlling you.

It’s about teaching yourself a new life skill – so that you never forget it! Just like when you learned to drive. As a Learner Driver you had to think about everything that you did and it was difficult. Now its easy and you can drive without thinking. That’s because it’s your subconscious driving the car!

Doing this Mindset exercise every day WILL work.

❖ Then put the piece of paper away in a file so you can’t see it

❖ Next day, do exactly the same thing again, without looking at the ones you did before. Your goals may change over the month. This doesn’t matter. Go with the flow.

Welsh Motoring Writers honour RAF Valley.

Over the years, the Welsh Motoring Writers have presented their prestigious Tom Pryce Trophy award to many famous people for their achievements on land, sea and in the air, including Nick Reilly CBE of Anglesey, former President of GM Europe; Richard Parry-Jones CBE of Barmouth, former Vice President and Chief engineer of Ford; David Richards formerly of Ruthin and now CEO of Prodrive, and Owen Wyn Owen of Capel Curig, restorer of Parry-Thomas’ Land Speed Record car,

‘Babs’. However, for 2012 (the Group‘s twentieth anniversary) , the trophy was awarded to RAF Valley, Anglesey, and at a ceremony in the Officers’ Mess there, it was presented on behalf of the WMW by Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant for Gwynedd, His Honour Huw Morgan Daniel, to Group Captain Adrian Hill ADC RAF, Valley Station Commander, who, in his acceptance speech on behalf of all at Valley, likened the modern day pilot to racing driver Tom Pryce in his F1 car. The Royal Welsh Crystal trophy was inscribed ‘Athrylith ar Adennydd Chwim’ (Prowess Born on Wings of Speed). The WMW’s special Automotive Achievement trophy was also presented to Tim Williams, CEO of the Welsh Automotive Forum, in recognition of its key role in Wales’ main industrial sector.
