Years of Classic

Smeg is driven by an entrepreneurial spirit to constantly deliver new technologies which improve the preparation of food, entertaining and quality of life.

From its inception nearly seventy years ago in 1948, Smeg’s mission has been to develop beautiful cooking appliances which create the tastiest meals in the easiest manner. From that day to this, Smeg has focused on developing ever-improving cooking technologies culminating in the Thermoseal technology Smeg has today. Notable firsts include Smeg’s fully programmable freestanding cooker with flame failure device in 1956, and the world’s first built-in oven with the retractable control knobs in 1985.

1985 was also the year Smeg committed to bringing elegant Italian, “Made in Italy” design into the kitchen. In another world first, Smeg made the decision to collaborate with the world’s best architects to create appliances with aesthetic beauty to endure over time. Smeg’s first collaboration was with famous Italian architect, Guido Canali, commissioned to create the Classic range and apply architectural form to the appliances.

Today we are celebrating 30 years of Smeg’s collaboration with Canali and the Classic design – elegant, beautiful and timeless design which will always be in vogue.

A Smeg is unlike any other oven. Ingeniously, it operates without the constant in-take of external air. Using physics, Smeg has pioneered a unique and energy-efficient system in the cavity to enable humidity control, without the need for expensive or complicated steam systems.

Smeg’s Thermoseal produces the perfect atmospheric balance required for optimum cooking conditions. The application of heat to food occurs in a completely controlled environment – no external forces change the conditions and every culinary reaction occurs just as intended.

Where moisture is not required, for example for pastry or meringue, it’s released. Where moisture is required, for example for a roast, it’s maintained. There is no guesswork involved, no gadgets and no intervention. It’s the easiest way to get perfect results, every time.

We summarise it in the name Thermoseal – the seal of taste.

Thermoseal is the reason your roasts are melt-in-the-mouth tender and dripping with flavour; the reason your puff pastry is crisp and light; and the reason your shortcrust is delicate and golden. The seal of Smeg’s quality, technical excellence and taste: succulent roasts, crisp pastry and impressive baking is achieved in Smeg’s unique, perfectly controlled cooking environment. Thermoseal maintains the perfect atmospheric balance in the cavity for optimum cooking conditions.

The superior quality of Smeg’s patented Ever Clean enamel, which is highly durable and easy to clean, is the result of nearly 70 years of enameling expertise; ensuring long-life performance of every Smeg oven.

Smeg’s Cool Door system is a combination of technologies which is driven by a 22 blade tangential fan and includes a heat exchange baffle system. It draws cool air up through the panes of heat-reflective glass in the door, making it safe to the touch even when the oven is at pyrolytic temperatures of around 500ºC.

The new soft-close mechanism on Smeg’s oven doors ensures a two-stage soft and quiet close. Smeg’s quality hinges also ensures the door will not drop on opening, an intrinsic safety feature.

Smeg’s pyrolytic cycle locks the door and heats the oven to around 500ºC. This process carbonises any food residue or burnt-on grease to a small amount of ash, which can be simply wiped away with a damp cloth. Smeg also has Eco Pyro - the low energy option.

Smeg’s SmartSense intuitive program selection is easy-to-read in the large LCD panel. Effortlessly select oven functions, temperature and time for cooking; enter the time you want your meal to be ready and your delay start is calculated for you; or cook 20 pre-programmed favourites at the flick of a button.

Smeg’s SmartSense Plus provides a foolproof, step-by-step guide to cooking. The large TFT colour display is legible without reading glasses, and so simple to follow. SmartSense Plus also has 50 guided cooking programs and you can also save 10 of your most-used favourites.

Guido Canali

Born in Parma in 1934, Guido Canali is one of the preeminent Italian architects of recent time and recipient of numerous awards including the Preis of Hanover (1992); the Compasso D’Oro of Milan (2004); and the Award for the “best architecture of the past five years” from Reeds-Inarch in 2007.

The work of Guido Canali has paradoxically swung from past to present, where experience from one era has served the other.

He is a specialist in the restoration of buildings of historical and cultural significance, from the restoration of the stairs of Santa Maria in Sienna; to the historic National Gallery and the famous timber theatre, the Teatro Farnese in Parma. His most recent restoration projects include the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo in Milan. It’s painstaking and finely detailed work which has to honour the original artisan.

Canali is a purist. His approach to architecture is modernist, uncluttered by superfluous elements and fiercely independent of building trends and fashion. He believes a building must serve the needs of the people within and they should feel at ease with their surroundings. Indeed his approach is to bring as much of the environment surrounding the building to the people inside, drawing on the beauty of nature to supply the decoration. The Canali designed Smeg HQ and Prada HQ buildings are testimony to this philosophy.

When Canali first collaborated with Smeg 30 years ago, his rigid architectural principles applied equally to the design of appliances. Strict form and simple, essential design are his mantra - every “almost industrial” straight line with the most perfect rolled edge will meet a plate of glass exactly.

Canali’s first collaboration with Smeg culminated in the “Classic” - which has been often emulated and copied over the past thirty years, however no one else has managed to capture the purity and essence of the Classic design. And this is why Classic has endured.

It has a symbolic, semantic aspect to it…a prominent arm indicates extremely clearly the direction in which the control knob should be turned and, as can often happen with cylinder shaped control knobs, it is not difficult to grip and

it does not require graphics to show how it works. “

As the first exponents of architectural design in appliances, Smeg is acutely aware of the desire for uninterrupted lines in the kitchen. Smeg’s new Classic Collection has evolved to ensure precisely matching detail, whether you install complementary appliances together in a vertical

or horizontal configuration.

Smeg’s new Compact ovens with 45cm height are wholly produced in Smeg’s cooking factory in northern Italy and tooled to perfectly match Smeg’s 60cm ovens.

When placed side-by-side, Canali’s Classic design in the Compact 45cmH appliances offers the perfect balance between Eclipse glass and stainless steel, with a stainless steel strip on the bottom of the appliance “grounding” the design at the base.

However for those who want to install a Compact oven side-by-side with a Smeg 60cm oven, the Smeg 15cm warming drawer has been designed to line up perfectly to make the height up to the full 60cm.

Now, Smeg has provided the option of a Compact oven with full glass door to suit each Smeg Compact appliance. The combination of the Compact oven and warming drawer is now artfully disguised as if it were identical to the 60cm oven. The uninterrupted line is now a reality.

Compact oven full glass doors are available as an optional door kit, depending on the Compact model:

KP43M – suitable for Smeg Compact Speed and Microwave ovens including the SFA4395MCX, SFA4390MX

KP43V – suitable for Smeg Compact Combi Steam and Steam ovens including the SFA4395VCX, SFA4390VX

KP43P – suitable for Smeg Compact Pyrolytic Oven SFPA4390X

When Canali originally conceived the Classic design, his preference was to use black glass in the door. Thirty years ago the black glass available did not have exceptional qualities for visibility into the oven, so the “silver” glass became the preferred medium for the window.

Now with the development of glass technology, Smeg has introduced Eclipse black glass which honours Canali’s original design. Eclipse glass is opaque when there is no light shining behind, but when the oven lights are on, enables a high-visibility direct view into the oven and clear view of everything cooking within. Eclipse has a “now you see me, now you don’t” effect, so you can now keep a close eye

on everything as it cooks.
