May 16, 1918 The community was very much surprised last Monday when the U.S. Marshal came up from Aberdeen and took into custody Pankratz Pfaller as an enemy alien on a presi- dential warrant, as the result of his answers to the question- aire. The fact that Mr. Pfaller is an alien, we believe is rather his misfortune. He came here about four years ago and we have learned to know him a quiet peaceful, law-abiding and industrious fellow and believe an investigation in his case will release him as not of danger to our country’s noble cause. Campbell County Progress May 10, 1918 Ruth, the little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Wilkinson of Dale, was brought to Dr. Shockey on Wednesday to have a cut on her forehead dressed. The wound was caused by a kick from a horse and was a severe one, eight stitches being required to bring the parts to place. A party consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Henry DeBoer, their two boys and Mrs. Van Olst, all of Westfield, met with an automobile accident Tuesday that bruised them all up con- siderable, but Mrs. DeBoer suffered a broken jaw and the loss of several teeth. The accident happened near the Woodard farm while the party was on the way to Glenham and traveling at too high speed on a strange road. The oldest boy was driving at the time and had just been warned by the father to reduce speed when the car hit a rut in the road and all were thrown out with the results stated above. A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Karl Johnson, residing east of Pollock on Tuesday. May 17, 1918 A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Sturtevant, residing west of Pollock, last Wednesday evening. The salt shortage in Pollock will be relieved when G.W. Tracy next week receives a carload that has been ordered since January. The shortage in the state became so serious that the food administrator took the matter up and de- manded that salt shipments be given preference until the situation was relieved. Mr. and Mrs. P.O. Peter- son of Glanavon have this week moved to the vicinity of McLaughlin where they have taken government land. 75 Years Ago Prairie Picayune April 29, 1943 The weather the past week has been cold and quite stormy. Brisk winds have been blowing several days making farm work quite unpleasant. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Wolf and Joan visited relatives in Zeeland, N.D. The fishing season opens May 1, except for bass, which opens June 15. You may get your fishing license at the Gamble Store. Every male resident over 18 years must have a fish license if he wishes to indulge in this sport. The resident license costs $1.00. A few neighbor ladies surprised Mrs. Elizabeth Damberger at her home yesterday at a handkerchief shower on her birthday. A pleasant afternoon was spent during which refreshments were served. May 6, 1943 Principal A. Stoebner dis- closed that according to latest tabulations, Irene Ritter and Elvera Holzwarth maintained the highest scholastic aver- ages during their four years of high school. By virtue of this record, Irene Ritter has been announced Valedicto- rian and Elvera Holzworth, Salutatorian. Mr. and Mrs. Dave Rieker and twin daughters LeDoris and Deloris from Sterling, N.D. were guests at the home of his brother and wife, Mr. and Mrs. John Rieker, and vis- iting friends in town Sunday. We have received the infor- mation from Camp Chaffee, Ark., that Arthur J. Ankerson, who is in the 62nd Armored Infantry Regiment, 14th Armored Division, has been promoted to Corporal. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Elizabeth Ankerson living southwest of Herreid. Campbell County Progress April 29, 1943 It has been our experi- ence, after killing a few hundred rattlers, that snakes coming out in the spring do not linger long around their winter homes, while the fall of the year as they come to their dens for the winter they may be killed in masses, but if everyone would make it a point to kill them wherever found will greatly help. A female killed now means a dozen or more little ones are also killed. We invariably carry in our car a good stout green club. Kenneth Borr and Gloria Reierson were among the high school seniors who took part in the Pollock high school skip day at Bismarck Thursday. They visited the penitentiary, capitol build- ing, reform school, and other sights of the vicinity. They all reported a good time. Arnold, 10 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Hehn, passed away last Friday from heart trouble, interment was made Wednesday in the Pol- lock cemetery. May 6, 1943 Last Saturday, May 1 was surely some day. The wind came up during the forenoon and by noon had reached gale proportions, whipping the sky full of dirt and reminded us of 1934. By four o’clock however the wind went down completely and the remainder of the day was warm and nice. Elmer Reierson has been moved and is now located at Ft. Benning, Georgia. Following a three week’s illness, Gerret Cleveringa, 26, a farmer of the Westfield community, passed away on Good Friday, April 23 at 8:35 a.m. in a Bismarck hospital. The cause of his death was given as Hodgkin’s disease, from which he had suffered for the past four years. Ger- ret was born Feb. 13, 1817 at Westfield where he grew to manhood and lived all his life, except two years spent in Lynden, Washington. On Dec. 20, 1940 he was united in marriage to Lillie Ryckman and they settled on a farm near Westfield. After farming tow seasons, failing health compelled them to move to Westfield last fall. 50 Years Ago Prairie Picayune May 2, 1968 Honor students for the Class of ’68, Herreid high school have been announced. Jayne Brummund is Valedic- torian and Terry Brandner is Salutatorian. Commence- ment is scheduled for Mon- day, May 20 with Attorney General Frank L Farrar en- gaged as the speaker. The honored couple was presented with red and white carnations by their children and the corsages were pinned by Mrs. James Barthell, daughter of the couple, who came by plane for this special occasion from Sauger, California. On March 3, in front of a brief formation, Charles R. Kosel of Mound City was presented a Purple Heart and the First Oak Leaf Cluster for hearing loss suffered when the Self Propelled 155 Howitzer gun he was driving hit a mine on Jan. 28 and Jan. 30, 1968. Two cars, one driven by Mrs. James Mitzel and the other by J. W. Quaschnick, collided on Main Street in front of the Post Office last week Wednesday. There were no injuries and damage to each car was under $100. Pollock Pioneer May 2, 1968 Hundreds of people visited Mound City Sunday discov- ered that all Campbell County and neighboring residents don’t let their spare time go to waste. The occasion was a Hobby Show put on by the Farmerettes Extension Club of Mound City. It was so suc- cessful that plans already are being considered to make it an annual event. Honor students of the Pol- lock high school graduating class have been announced by Supt. Fred S. Morgen. They are Mary Pollock and Kathie Seymour, co-valedictorians. Lonny Borr and Christine Bootsma co-salutatorians. Michael Wittmeier cel- ebrated his 10th birthday last Thursday after school when his mother arranged a party in his honor. Guests present were Leslie and Donald Dale, Wayne and Allen Reierson, Don Borr, Arlo LaFave, Max Henry Meihak, Gene Meyer, and Carmen Hout. May 9, 1968 Presentation of a new “Debbie” Award, in honor of Debbie Heckelsmiller, who was killed last June in a motorcycle accident, featured the annual Junior- Senior banquet at Pollock High School Saturday night. The award, for seniors, will be presented annually by the Home Ec department and Ed- die Heckelsmiller, Debbie’s father. The requirements are a high scholastic achieve- ment in home economics, citizenship, and leadership and extra curricular and com- munity activities. Winner of the first award, an inscribed silver tray, was Marilyn Odde, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Odde. It was presented by Mrs. E.L. MacKay, home ec teacher. Sandy Schnabel, daugh- ter of Mr. and Mrs. Roland Schnabel and a freshman at Northern State College in Aberdeen, set a record in a girl’s track meet held Saturday at General Beadle College in Madison. Sandy won the 50-yard dash in record time of 6.7 seconds. She is also was a member of a Northern team which took first in a relay event. 25 Years Ago Prairie Pioneer April 29, 1993 Pollock students gathered in the school library Thursday to watch the memorial service for Gov. George S. Mickelson and seven others killed in an April 19 plane crash. The pro- gram was broadcast live from the Capitol rotunda in Pierre. Herreid students and faculty watched the live broadcast Thursday afternoon. The service was preceded by a half hour biographical pro- gram prepared by S.D. Public Television. Luke Charles Wiest, son of Grant and Pat Wiest of Herreid, celebrated his first birthday on April 1. He has a brother, Adam 3 1/2. May 6, 1993 Pollock’s Town Board swore in a new member Monday night as Ray Re- iss took his oath of office. Newly elected member Ed Howell was out of town on business. Dennis Moser was re-elected mayor, and Rick Chewakin was re-elected as vice-chairman. Tom and Mary Mitzel of Herreid are the parents of a daughter, Kelsey Rose, who was born April 27, 1993, at the Mobridge Regional Hos- pital. She weighed 6 pounds 15 1/2 ounces. Pollock’s tracksters trav- eled to Eureka Tuesday to compete in the Eureka Legion Track Meet and returned with numerous medals, including the Outstanding Male Athlete Award. The top male athlete honor was first given to Stuart Oster of Eureka, but after a re-calculation of individual points earned showed that Shawn Geigle had edged Oster by one point, 25-24. On Thursday, they attended the 8th grade graduation and re- ception for Isaac at Edgerton. On Sunday, they all attended the reception of Maggie Dornbush from high school at the home of Darold and Jill. Later, Shirley and Marlene had the privilege of Darold giving them a ride in their dad’s 53 Chevy pickup which Darold has restored. On Monday, on their return trip home, they stopped in Fargo and had breakfast with Jim’s daughter, Jillian, and her little son, Tyson. Friday evening, Grace Chewakin, Betty Vander Vorst and Marlene Dykema attended the Vacation Bible School program at the Pol- lock Memorial Presbyterian Church. Ken and Faye Ryckman attended the Pollock Memo- rial Day program and dinner at the community center on Monday. On Tuesday, Ken and Faye Ryckman went to Bismarck and enjoyed dinner with Sara and Caitlin Ryckman. Caitlin returned to Pollock with them and was a guest of her great grandparents for the week, attending Vacation Bible School. Aaron and Liam Ryckman were Thursday afternoon guests and Caitlin was an overnight guest of her cousins on the farm after Va- cation Bible School. Sara and Penni Ryckman came Friday evening for the program at the Presbyterian Church. A Sunday dinner and af- ternoon guest of Ken and Faye Ryckman was Gordon Ryckman. Dorothy Huizenga and Irene Ryckman were Mobridge shoppers Thursday morning. In the afternoon, they visited Bonnie Larson. On Wednesday, May 23, Marlene Dykema met her sister, Shirley Herman and Jim Bieber of Turtle Lake, ND and they traveled to Chandler, MN to visit at the home of Jeff and Kris Gunnink, Megan, Isaac, Abbie and Anna. On Thursday, they attended the 8th grade graduation and re-ception for Isaac at Edgerton. On Friday, they left for New Richmond, WI where they had a mini family reunion with Betty Dornbush of Hu-ron, Dan and Cindy Dornbush of Omaha, NE, Darold and Jill Dornbush, Katie, Maggie and Anna of New Richmond, WI, Deanna Kingery of Suqua-mish, WA, Shirley, Jim and Marlene. On Sunday, they all attended the reception of Maggie Dornbush from high school at the home of Darold and Jill. Later, Shirley and Marlene had the privilege of Darold giving them a ride in their dad’s 53 Chevy pickup which Darold has restored. On Monday, on their return trip home, they stopped in Fargo and had breakfast with Jim’s daughter, Jillian, and her little son, Tyson.

Friday evening, Grace Chewakin, Betty Vander Vorst and Marlene Dykema attended the Vacation Bible School program at the Pol-lock Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Peggy Van Beek attended the Memorial Day Program

at the Pollock Community Center on Monday and at-tended the covered dish din-ner afterwards.

Peggy Van Beek was a supper guest at Marilyn and Florian Voller’s on Friday night with weekend guests Jason, Tyson and Nolan Haak of Fargo and Darel, Cassie, Kesley and Paisley Haak of Arnegard, ND. Lance Voller, Devan and Stacy Voller, Den-nis Haak and Becky Haak. Later, Peggy attended the Bible school program at the Presbyterian Church.

Peggy Van Beek spent Saturday at the Voller’s as Mark and Chad Van Beek, Danielle, Wes, Wyatt, Kam-bree and Cooper Mastel, Lyle and Casey Vander Vorste, Jacob, Tyler, Thomas and Nicole, Matt Leier and Lance Voller came to celebrate the birthdays of Cooper Mastel, Tyson Haak and Matt Leier.

Peggy Van Beek, Danny and Janice Gjefle, Lyle and Casey Vander Vorste and Wes’s parents joined Wes, Danielle, Wyatt, Kambree and Cooper at their camper at State Line Resort for Sun-day dinner for Cooper and Danny’s birthday.

Peggy Van Beek attended the Birthday Breakfast on Monday morning at the Oahe Sunset Lodge and Steakhouse.

On Tuesday, Myrna Weber, Larry and Sandra Renner and

Larry and Vicki Krueger of Colorado met at Oahe Sunset Lodge and Steakhouse for dinner and Larry and Vicki visited at Myrna’s after dinner.

On Wednesday, Myrna Weber went to Mobridge on business and had coffee at Marlene Lingman’s. Alva Payne was also there.

Ken and Faye Ryckman attended the Pollock Memo-rial Day program and dinner at the community center on Monday.

On Tuesday, Ken and Faye Ryckman went to Bismarck and enjoyed dinner with Sara and Caitlin Ryckman. Caitlin returned to Pollock with them and was a guest of her great grandparents for the week, attending Vacation Bible School. Aaron and Liam Ryckman were Thursday afternoon guests and Caitlin was an overnight guest of her cousins on the farm after Va-cation Bible School. Sara and Penni Ryckman came Friday evening for the program at the Presbyterian Church.

A Sunday dinner and af-ternoon guest of Ken and Faye Ryckman was Gordon Ryckman.

D o r o t h y H u i z e n g a and Irene Ryckman were Mobridge shoppers Thursday morning. In the afternoon, they visited Bonnie Larson.
