New Academic Course Development/ Revisions: Under my leadership from 2012-2017, the PhD program:

Embarked on curriculum revision: generating philosophy; reconfirming conceptual framework; engaging in curriculum and content mapping; revising program of study, combining BS and MS students to form a more supportive cohort; designing four new courses, extending the role course to run across the curriculum; adding a teaching course and two research practica, establishing “selectives” for student choice, adding grounded theory and advanced qualitative data management to selectives; designing and implementing the program’s first formal systematic evaluation plan, complete with reporting and feedback loops.

Established formal program procedures: Professional Standards of Conduct with accompanying rubric; Recommendation for Dismissal; Admitting Faculty, Classified Staff/Service Professionals as PhD Students

Designed and implemented a Manuscript Option for the Dissertation to facilitate publishing upon graduation, retaining the traditional format for those who prefer it.

Standardized faculty guidelines for supervising comprehensive examinations and dissertation activities, including proposals, defenses, and research activities.

Created and implemented a part-time option for students challenged by work-life balance. Formed and supported a student advisory group for collaboration in addressing program issues

and celebrating successes. Combined student and faculty handbooks into one regularly updated document to facilitate easy

access to information and effectively communicate program procedures. Redesigned admission processes, including assessment rubrics based on entry characteristics for

program outcomes, faculty interviews, and an on-site essay to assess the ability to analyze, synthesize, and write.

Added on-line “Writing for Journals” modules to pre-entry requirements to enhance applicants’ abilities to write professionally, thereby maximizing program success.

Created and produced niche marketing materials, responded to website issues and lack of access to usual recruitment venues with innovative mobile recruitment; currently collaborating with new marketing team to revise website and recruitment campaign.

Revised twice-yearly immersions to address specific student interests and requests, current “hot topics”, and include more student/faculty opportunity for interaction. Tied student attendance to the role course and created on-line surveys for student feedback.

Created online portfolios to facilitate annual assessment of student progress; revised annual review system so that all faculty are involved in the advancement decisions and regularly monitor student progress.

Accessed funding for two Jonas Nurse Leader Scholars. Systematically monitored feedback loops on the Program Evaluation Plan and responded

accordingly. Created PowerPoint templates and formal evaluation rubrics for student presentations at annual

Scholars’ Day. Set up a teaching assistant program, in addition to the existing RA program, for student teaching

experience and tuition remission. Designed and implemented Qualifying Exams for students at the end of the first year, using a

faculty-designed rubric and selected books on scientific topics to assess student ability to critically analyze, synthesize, and write, thereby maximizing success during dissertation work.

Supported student attendance at the Western Institute of Nursing annual conferences through stipends, poster support, and faculty mentorship.

Worked with other programs to coordinate access to TA opportunities, CONHI scholarships, T32 and Hartford funding.

Administered university block grants for beginning students and other CONHI scholarships; accessed WICHE funds for out-of-state students; and provided informational sessions for faculty and students on NRSAs.

Under the leadership of Dr. Lamb, worked through curriculum and course maps to identify multi/inter/transdisciplinary content and generated learning activities. In addition, arranged for and participated in a series of follow-up educational sessions about interdisciplinary/transdisciplinary work, including a workshop at faculty retreat Spring 2016 and a student workshop at immersion Spring 2017.

Implemented all new courses, including the research practica, role courses across the curriculum, the teaching course, grounded theory, and the health policy course. A qualitative data management course was added to the selectives and a mixed methods course is currently under development for Spring 2018.

Planned and implemented the first comprehensive external evaluation of the PhD program for March 2017, for which I identified external visitors, wrote the self-study, made complex logistical arrangements, and led the faculty through the process.

Developed a complete set of materials for the interdisciplinary, advanced qualitative course, NUR 691 Qualitative Data Management. Students must have completed a basic qualitative research course and have at least a preliminary data set in order to participate fully in the course. This graduate seminar applies various qualitative research methods to generation of knowledge, thereby assisting in production of a the-sis, dissertation, or qualitative research report. Discussions will focus on philosophical and methodologi-cal congruence in addressing a research question; conceptual and theoretical perspectives; naturalistic de-sign; data reduction, analysis, and interpretation; confirmability, auditability, credibility, transferability, and utility; ethics; and data re-presentation and dissemination. Offered as F2F course.

Developed a complete set of materials for NUR608 Qualitative Research Design & Methods, including units on qualitative critiques, phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography, case study, narrative de-sign, critical inquiry, and conceptual and theoretical frameworks. Created corresponding learning activi-ties (including analytic exercises for various approaches), assignments, grading criteria, and rubrics. Placed the course on Blackboard. Worked with the Disability Resource Center and a doctoral student with a disability to provide accommodations for the course. Revised as webinar and placed on the Web.

Revised HCR 230, using innovative, in-class assessment strategies to monitor student progress and tailor classes to individual student needs. Worked with the Disability Resource Center to provide additional in-formation on disabilities as a culture, addressing a current “hot topic” in nursing education. Provided re-vised syllabi, assignments, and PowerPoints for other members of the HCR230 team.

Adapted HCR230 to include content on white privilege, racial bias, and institutional racism as recom-mended in the literature on teaching diversity; included additional materials about social justice as one of the AACN nursing values; included discussions and lead chapter on students with disabilities in nursing from Annual Review of Nursing Education (Evans, 2005); revised web-enhanced materials.

Developed and added in-class assessment component to NUR341 and shared with other course coordina-tors.

Adapted web-based NUR552 course for delivery as web-enhanced intensive format for Fall 2004.

Co-developed N503 Theory in Nursing course and co-revised N504 for Fall 2003.
