Yearly Bible Readings The Office and The Lectionary Advent 2021 — Advent 2022 It is a joy to share with you this daily Bible reading guide. Six years ago I discovered two ancient reading plans of the church, the Daily Oce and the Lectionary. At that time I was desiring a deeper communion with God and hungering for greater spiritual transformation in my life. As I followed these two plans I discovered what I had been searching for. Each year I spend many hours planning what I am going to read in the coming year. Every year this guide is unique. I know from personal experience that you will be richly blessed as you immerse yourself in God’s life-changing Word. Your personal worship will increase. Your prayer life will be enriched. God will become your constant refuge and hope. Jesus will become your daily companion. The Holy Spirit will become your guide. These plans follow the ancient calendar of the church—beginning each new year in Advent. Although you will not read the entire Bible in one year (it takes at least two years to do that) you will have time every day to encounter Jesus in the gospels, learn from the apostles’ correspondence to the first Christians, encounter God as he acted in history in the Old Testament and dwell in the wisdom of the Psalms.

Yearly Bible Readings The Office and The Lectionary

Advent 2021 — Advent 2022 It is a joy to share with you this daily Bible reading guide. Six years ago I discovered two ancient reading plans of the church, the Daily Office and the Lectionary.

As you read, make notes in your Bible or journal. Document and date how God spoke to you in various passages. Pray the words of Scripture back to God. Make your reading a part of your conversation with fellow believers. Dare to look for opportunities to share with outsiders. Use it to transform your culture.

The great English preacher, Charles H Spurgeon once said “Visit many good books, but live in the Bible.” I invite you this Advent to join me on this journey. If you have any questions or insights along the way, please contact me at [email protected].

“Taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.” — Psalm 34.8

Advent is the traditional start of the Christian year. Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day. We get our word ‘Advent’ from a Latin word that means ‘coming’. During the Advent season we prepare ourselves for the coming of our Lord — both in the celebration of his Incarnation and in his promised return at the Second Coming. In Advent we are filled with hope and expectation as we yearn for the coming of our Savior.

At the conclusion of the Christmas season is the Day of the Epiphany. The Epiphany celebrates the visit of the Magi — wisemen from Persia — to the Christ child. During this day we think of the universal salvation that Jesus brings, both to Jew and Gentile.

Forty days after his birth, Jesus is taken to the Temple to be consecrated before the Lord. In Jewish law, every firstborn male is to be ‘redeemed’ by the offering of a sacrifice. We acknowledge Christ as our Redeemer.

The Transfiguration, when Jesus was glorified and appeared in his heavenly form, is celebrated on the Sunday before Ash Wednesday. This is an appropriate day because the Scripture tells us that immediately after he was transfigured Jesus ‘set his face to go to Jerusalem’ (Luke 9.51) where he would die to redeem us. The Lenten season is a time when we can prepare ourselves for our own journey with Jesus to take up our cross.

The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. Lent is the 40-day period of fasting in preparation for Easter. The length of time was patterned after the 40-day period that Jesus spends fasting in the desert after his baptism. During Lent we concentrate on the sacrifice of Jesus. Some choose to fast during this season.

We now enter into a time where we remember the events of the last week of Jesus’ life. The four gospels write more on these events than anything else. The events of this week are powerful reminders of the mission and the reason for the coming of the Christ. Unlike the uncertainty surrounding the date of Christmas, the events surrounding the crucifixion can tied to the Jewish celebration of the Passover. Palm Sunday celebrates the triumph of the ministry of Jesus Christ where he is welcomed as the King. Maundy Thursday is the remembrance of the institution of the Lord’s Supper. This memorial feast, which represents the sacrifice of the body and blood of Jesus, is to be celebrated until he comes back again. Jesus is our Passover Lamb. Good Friday is the solemn remembrance of Jesus’ death on the cross. He died in our place and took upon himself our burden of sin.

Some Christians gather late on Saturday evening in a vigil to wait the for the celebration of the glorious resurrection of our Lord. The readings in the vigil are lengthy because they remind us how God has been active in saving his covenant people throughout time—beginning with the story of salvation from the flood and continuing until the time that God brought back his covenant people from the exile. Communion is also taken during the vigil as we remember the ultimate salvation that came through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.. The vigil ends with a reminder of how we too have

been saved by Jesus by recalling the time of our own baptism into Christ. Many times people who are ready to proclaim Jesus as their Savior are baptized at an Easter Vigil.

The Day of Pentecost takes place 50 days after Passover. Pentecost was a Jewish celebration of the giving of the Law as well as a celebration of the first fruits of the harvest. It was on the Day of Pentecost that the church was born as the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles in power. After hearing the story of Jesus, 3,000 were baptized—the first fruits of the church.

The first Sunday after Pentecost is traditionally called Trinity Sunday. It is a remembrance of how the Trinity - God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit - have worked in concert to save and redeem humanity.
