QC-LDPC Code-Based CryptographyThis book describes the fundamentals of the use of quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC-LDPC) codes within the framework of the McEliece cryptosystem. In the first part, different design techniques for QC-LDPC codes are examined, and the error correction performance of these codes is assessed through numerical simulations of transmission systems. Within this context, novel design techniques are proposed for particular families of QC-LDPC codes. The second part of the book focuses on the McEliece cryptosystem, both in its original form, based on Goppa codes, and in some subsequent variants. Sample Efficient Multiagent Learning in the Presence of Markovian AgentsThe problem of Multiagent Learning (or MAL) is concerned with the study of how intelligent enti-ties can learn and adapt in the presence of other such entities that are simultaneously adapting. The problem is often studied in the stylized settings provided by repeated matrix games (a.k.a. normal form games). The goal of this book is to develop MAL algorithms for such a setting that achieve a new set of objectives which have not been previ-ously achieved. In particular this book deals with learning in the presence of a new class of agent behavior that has not been studied or modeled be-fore in a MAL context: Markovian agent behavior. Several new challenges arise when interacting with this particular class of agents.

Features 7 Presents recent research in sample efficient multiagent learning in the presence of markov-ian agents 7 Develops multiagent learning algorithms not previously been achieved 7 Takes steps towards building completely autonomous learning algorithms

The Proper Generalized Decomposition for Advanced Numerical SimulationsA Primer

Many problems in scientific computing are intrac-table with classical numerical techniques. These fail, for example, in the solution of high-dimen-sional models due to the exponential increase of the number of degrees of freedom. Recently, the authors of this book and their collaborators have developed a novel technique, called Proper Gen-eralized Decomposition (PGD) that has proven to be a significant step forward. The PGD builds by means of a successive enrichment strategy a numerical approximation of the unknown fields in a separated form. Although first introduced and successfully demonstrated in the context of high-dimensional problems, the PGD allows for a completely new approach for addressing more standard problems in science and engineering. Indeed, many challenging problems can be ef-ficiently cast into a multi-dimensional framework, thus opening entirely new solution strategies in the PGD framework.

Contents 1 Introduction.- 2 PGD solution of the Poisson equation.- 3 PGD versus SVD.- 4 The transient diffusion equation.- 5 Parametric models.- 6 Advanced topics.

Physical Computation and Cognitive ScienceThis book presents a study of digital computa-tion in contemporary cognitive science. Digital computation is a highly ambiguous concept, as there is no common core definition for it in cogni-tive science. Since this concept plays a central role in cognitive theory, an adequate cognitive explanation requires an explicit account of digital computation. More specifically, it requires an ac-count of how digital computation is implemented in physical systems.

Features 7 Promotes a clear understanding of concrete digital computation 7 Establishes the funda-mental role of computation in modern cognitive science, while rejecting the extrinsically repre-sentational nature of computation 7 Critically analyzes several accounts of digital computation and proposes for the first time the instructional information processing account 7 Makes a sig-nificant contribution to the fields of computational cognitive science and the philosophy of cognition

Contents Setting the Stage: Computation in Cognitive Sci-ence.- An Analysis of the Adequacy Criteria for Evaluating Accounts of Computation.- Starting at the Beginning: Turing’s Account Examined.- The Triviality “Account” Examined.- Semantic Ac-counts of Computation Examined.- Computation as Information Processing.- Causal and Functional Accounts of Computation Examined.- Computa-tion Revisited in the Context of Cognitive Science.

Pocket Data MiningBig Data on Small Devices

Owing to continuous advances in the computa-tional power of handheld devices like smartphones and tablet computers, it has become possible to perform Big Data operations including modern data mining processes onboard these small devic-es. A decade of research has proved the feasibility of what has been termed as Mobile Data Mining, with a focus on one mobile device running data mining processes. However, it is not before 2010 until the authors of this book initiated the Pocket Data Mining (PDM) project exploiting the seam-less communication among handheld devices performing data analysis tasks that were infeasible until recently. PDM is the process of collabora-tively extracting knowledge from distributed data streams in a mobile computing environment.

Prediction and Classification of Respiratory MotionThis book describes recent radiotherapy tech-nologies including tools for measuring target position during radiotherapy and tracking-based delivery systems. This book presents a customized prediction of respiratory motion with clustering from multiple patient interactions. The proposed method contributes to the improvement of patient treatments by considering breathing pattern for the accurate dose calculation in radiotherapy systems. Real-time tumor-tracking, where the prediction of irregularities becomes relevant, has yet to be clinically established. The statistical quantitative modeling for irregular breathing clas-sification, in which commercial respiration traces are retrospectively categorized into several classes based on breathing pattern are discussed as well. The proposed statistical classification may provide clinical advantages to adjust the dose rate before and during the external beam radiotherapy for minimizing the safety margin.

The Modelling and Analysis of the Mechanics of RopesThis book considers the modelling and analysis of the many types of ropes, linear fibre assemblies. The construction of these structures is very diverse and in the work these are considered from the modelling point of view. As well as the conven-tional twisted structures, braid and plaited struc-tures and parallel assemblies are modelled and analysed, first for their assembly and secondly for their mechanical behaviour. Also since the compo-nents are assemblies of components, fibres into yarns, into strands, and into ropes the hierarchical nature of the construction is considered. The focus of the modelling is essentially toward load exten-sion behaviour but there is reference to bending of ropes, encompassed by the two extremes, no slip between the components and zero friction resistance to component slip.

Features 7 Details the various analyses and mathematical models that can be used to quantify the behav-iour of linear fibre structures 7 Serves textile technologists as a tool to be used to reinforce their experimental research 7 Presents the various models and associated model behaviour that can help in understanding the performance of linear fibre structures

The work bridges the gap between statistical mechan-ics and control theory by tackling a number of challenges for a class of distributed systems involv-ing a specific type of constitutive components, namely referred to as Smart Minimal Particles. The results described in the volume are expected to lead to more robust, dependable, and inexpen-sive distributed systems such as those endowed with complex and advanced sensing, actuation, computation, and communication capabilities.

Features 7 Describes a complete methodological frame-work for designing, modeling and optimizing a specific class of distributed systems whose dynam-ics result from the multiple, stochastic interactions of their constitutive components 7 Provides a solid experimental and theoretical consolidation of the multi-level modeling methodology 7 Pro-poses, for the first time, an approach to generate models at high abstraction level in a completely automated fashion, based solely on observa-tions of the system of interest 7 Supplies deep insights into the modeling and the design of Smart Minimal Particles, with a specific emphasis on self-assembling systems ranging from the centime-ter scale down to the micrometer scale

StratonautsPioneers Venturing into the Stratosphere

Just what does it take to be a stratonaut, soaring to higher and higher altitudes of Earth’s atmo-sphere? Brave men and women have reached extreme heights in balloons, aircraft and rocket ships over the past two centuries, from the first untethered balloon flight to the first flights in the newly defined stratosphere, through to the present flights that continue to set new records. This book defines the altitudes related to the stratosphere, how it changes with latitude and the effects on ascending aviators. Also described is how over time technology enabled aircraft and balloons to achieve higher altitudes. The book shows the clear influence of the military on designs that initially focused on speed and maneuverability, but only later on reaching new altitudes.

Features 7 Explains how pilots and crew fly to ex-treme altitudes and the risks and problems involved 7 Covers the history of stratospheric flight from the earliest times to the present day 7 Includes material on the author's personal experiences as an RB-57F sensor operator and Apollo Pressure Suit Test Subject
