Well known for organizing our monthly Happy Hours, Janet Hanson says that her purpose in life is to “make people happy and joyful.” As a kid Janet lived in St. Paul, Minnesota; Westchester County, New York; Tokyo, Japan; and ended up back in St. Paul where she graduated from Central High. From high school, Janet went to work for West Publishing Company and later Remington Rand Corporation. After marrying, she moved to Lansing, Michigan, where her two kids were born. While living in Lansing, Janet worked for Hager-Fox, a small home center store. Eventually her family moved back to Minnesota and since her son was a hockey player, Janet became a “Hockey Mom.” During this time in Minnesota, Janet found the job that would suit her best until retirement; she became a receptionist in a dental office. Janet moved out here to Southern California after her children had grown and she and her husband had separated. While working as a receptionist at a local dentist office, Janet got to know an amiable guy named Harrison Wreden, who represented a dental lab and came in often. Then one day Harrison stopped coming by and Janet wondered what had happened to him. Two years later Harrison and Janet ran into each other at an outdoor concert. Though glad to see each other, nothing more came of that meeting. But fate didn’t give up. Soon after, they ran into each other at the supermarket. Throughout all these years a true friendship had been nurtured and from here, it blossomed. But their friendship was purely plutonic for several more years. Finally, on April 27, 1996, Harrison and Janet were married. Although not members of Torrey Pines at this time, long time club members Louise Oliverio and Steward Smith stood up with Janet and Harrison. Janet and Harrison became club members about 8 years ago in 2000. Join Janet at one of the Club Happy Hours or at the next Club Walk that Janet organizes with her long time friend Louise, or at the San Diego Air and Space Museum visit that Janet has planned for October 28. There’s one member of our club who makes it her business to see that everyone feels welcome. Well known for organizing our monthly Happy Hours, Janet Hanson says that her purpose in life is to “make people happy and joyful.”

As a kid Janet lived in St. Paul, Minnesota; Westchester County, New York; Tokyo, Japan;

and ended up back in St.

While working as a

receptionist at a local dentist office, Janet got to know an amiable guy named Harrison Wreden, who represented a dental lab and came in often.

Join us for a fun, casual golf tournament at Tecolote Canyon Golf Course conveniently located just off Highway 5 near the visitor center in San Diego. Please let Hobe know, either by mail or e-mail, no later than September 17. This will constitute a commitment. You will pay at the golf course. The cost includes $2.00 for prizes for the team with the lowest score, and the individuals with the longest drive and closest to the

pin on designated holes. The play will be scramble (best ball) and we will try to even the teams. Please indicate if you expect to shoot below 80, between 80 and 90 or above 90 at this challenging executive course. After the play there will be a no host lunch at the Tecolote restaurant with the awards ceremony.

At our last general meeting Ray Ashley brought us up to date on the explorer Juan Cabrillo. Dignitaries from Spain, Portugal and Mexico will be at the Cabrillo Festival and so should you.

The Cabrillo Festival will be held at Ballast Point, Naval Base Point Loma - at the south end of Rosecrans Street. (TG 1288 B7). It is a fun event for the entire family with educational activities, cultural demonstrations and exciting folkloric performances with music and dancing of Native Americans, Mexico, Portugal and Spain. The Festival will have food booths with delicious traditional food of the four nations. You will see Kumeyaay basket making and acorn preparation demonstrations, knot typing and a 16th century Spanish soldiers living history encampment. the highlight of the day is the re-enactment of cabrillo’s landing on the shores of the San diego bay (Ballast Point). Cabrillo, his soldiers and a priest sail into the bay on the San Salvador and once again claim the land for Spain. They will be accompanied by two other tall ships. The landing begins approximately 1:00 PM and is narrated by San Diego TV personality Jack White.

This is the only Indonesian restaurant in San Diego. If you’ve never tasted this cuisine before, you are in for a delightful treat. It is a blend of Colonial Dutch and East Asian cookery. The specialty is Rijsttafel! or Rice Table, an amazing array of wonderfully spiced dishes served for all to share. Don’t miss this one! reservations please!

I have lived in San Diego for 27 years and until recently I had not visited the Air and Space Museum. I could not believe what I had been missing. I think I could have spent the entire day there and still not managed to take it all in. The history ranges from the days of the Wright Brother’s, World War I, World War II, the advent of the commercial airline and space travel. Please join me on the 28th and see it all for yourself. There have been changes so even if you have visited before, it is well worth a return. Free admission for San Diego residents on this date, (bring proof.) There is an additional charge if one wishes to attend the Star Wars Feature. Lunch follows. pleaSe rSvp.
