If wall or ceiling repairs are on your to-do list, FibaTapeWall & Ceiling Repair Patchesmay be worth a look. Thepatches, from Saint-Gobain Technical Fabrics, incorporateFibaTape’s thin mesh with a new, expanded aluminumplate. The mesh’s thinness makes it easier to sand to aflat finish, increasing repair strength and durability, Fi-baTape says. The patches are available in four-, six- andeight-inch squares.

Another prep prospect: Warner Manufacturing’s 13new Soft Grip Wire Brushes for residential, commercialor industrial painting. The line includes options forsteel, brass, stainless or nylon bristles and various stylesof molded plastic handles.

Sanding has gotten several boosts this year. Full CircleInternational’s new Flex Edge Sander, unveiled lastJune, handles a variety of drywall and scuff-sandingchallenges, including corners, tight angles, outlets andbumps. The system comes with an aluminum head,pressure pad, foam pad, flex paper and flex foam.

Meanwhile, North Abrasives’ Norton Sanding Bug,which bowed in January, features a delta-shaped base forflat surfaces, crevices and corners. The hook-and-loopface allows for easy attachment and changes.

Hand toolsTools just keep getting better and better. Today’s crop

is sturdier, more clever and more reasonably priced thanever. This has been a banner year for hand tools in partic-ular, with four new lines from three major manufacturers.

The American Line Pro, from Personna/AmericanSafety Razor, has five new Smart Edge hand tools ($1.79-$12.99). The Wide Blade Scraper andMini-Scraper bothfeature ergonomically designed grips and handles andpatented locking mechanisms that hold the blade se-curely. The Stainless Steel Snap-Off Knife has a texturedslide for a sure grip and a pocket clip and safety cap forstorage. With the Folding Utility Knife, the blade extendsas the knife is opened and the knife locks in the openposition. The 4” Adjustable Stripper has an adjustablelocking head for multiple attack angles and a slip-resis-tant handle.

Zinsser Brands, Rust-Oleum Corporation, haslaunched six new painting and wallcovering tools: aSoftGrip Four-in-One Tool, which combines a trimguide, burnishing tool, wall scraper and spackling tool;Flexible Smoothing Tool; Glass Scraper; Multi-PurposeStraight Edge Tool; SoftGrip 9.5” Wallcovering and Fab-ric Shears; and SoftGrip 2” Smoothing Roller, with anon-slip, cushioned handle.

Meanwhile, Purdy has made a big splash in the sur-face-prep pool this year with two completely new tool

lines. The Premium Prep Tool line includes nine toolsfor scraping paint, spreading joint compound, applyingputty, patching holes and other tasks. The eight-itempro-grade Contractor Prep Tool line features clear-coated, high-carbon steel blades and plastic handleswith rubberized thumb grips. Each line includes jointknives, angled scrapers and putty knives. The PremiumPrep line has two 6-in-1 tools; the Contractor Prep linehas two 5-in-1 tools as well as a brush-roller cleaner tool.

Power toolsThere’s more power on the job this year. With growing

attention on concrete, Cucamonga Tools has introducedthe patent-pending Diamond Dually joint grinder, whichprepares both sides of expansion joints at the same time.The unit, with a 6.5 hp Honda engine, allows the operatorto stand and walk while preparing both sides of an ex-pansion joint. It is equipped to be dustless when used withan outside vacuum system.

The standalonetrays (starting at $6.49) feature a reusable, hard-substratebase with four built-liners that be easily peeled awayimmediately after use, leaving a clean tray for a new job inseconds. The trays contain 50 percent recycled material.

SprayersPerhaps no area of painting technology changes faster

than sprayers. New sprayers are coming to market inastonishing numbers—more than two dozen in the lastyear alone—with new features and long warranties. Itpays to keep up with the improvements.

AOM Spray Equipment has unveiled itsRP1.7 Pressur-ized HVLP Spray Gun, an R 200 spray gun with a 1.7 or1.4 spray tip, one-quart pressurized cup and regulator forall types of paints. Binks has answered with the Binks2100, a conventional, full-size spray gun with stainlesssteel fluid passages, suitable for a wide range of materials.

Graco has bowed numerous new models this year. Thehigh-performance IronMan 300E and 500G airless modelscome with 100 feet of airless hose, airless guns and threetips. Three new FinishPro HVLP Sprayers come withthe new FinishPro HVLP Edge Gun, while the GTX2000EX is geared toward professional texture contractors.The FinishPro 290 Air-Assisted Airless Sprayer, forhigh-production jobs, comes with an on-board air com-pressor, power piston paint pump and more.

The Wagner Group, parent of Wagner SprayTech andTitan Tools, recently launched about a dozen airlesssprayers in two new complete product lines. SprayTech’snew line includes the Advantage EPX 2155, designed tominimize size and weight and maximize performance forresidential and small commercial jobs. Titan Tool’s newImpact Series 440 sprays stains, lacquers, enamels andlatex at up to 3,300 PSI for residential, property main-tenance and small commercial applications.

High-tech helpersThe wireless world has opened up new frontiers in

safety and convenience. From Advanced RecyclingSystems comes the Wireless Deadman Remote, whichconnects a transmitter (near the blasting/containmentarea) and receiver with a digitally coded signal. Theradio signal becomes the replacement path for all thewire that would normally run from the recycling unit tothe blaster’s nozzle, saving money and maintenance.

Tightening up accountability, several companies arefocusing more attention on tracking employees andproducts. Exaktime’s FastTrakker works with The Job-

Drill and compact Lithium-Ion Impact Driver. The kitalso includes an Energy Star-rated battery charger andtwo Lithium-Ion batteries.

Knaack’s new PowerCrew In-Box Power Supply keepspower flowing safely to the job site. Four GFCI-protectedelectrical outlets provide 15 amps of power for operatingtools and equipment or charging batteries. The UL-ap-proved power supply complies with OSHA-recognizedtest standards.

ApplicatorsYou’d think that a product that’s been in use for sev-

eral thousand years would have been perfected by now.Not so. Paintbrushes and other applicators keep evolvingand improving.

Wooster Brush Company has launched Alpha profes-sional paintbrushes with exclusive MicroTip filament,stainless steel ferrules, and sealed maple-wood handles.The line, designed for commercial painting, is pricedfrom $11.99 to $32.49 and is available in angle sash, thinangle sash, flat sash, varnish, semi-oval and wall styles.Wooster promises smooth paint flow, great cut-in controland easy cleaning.

On the greener side, Linzer Products Corp. has bowedpremium-quality, ecologically sensitive Envirosheen PaintApplicators. Trays and fabrics are made with recycledmaterials, and brush handles are made of bamboo.Suitable for residential or commercial jobs, the items rangefrom $5.99 to $10.99.

Kraft Tool Co., meanwhile, has introduced a 24-inch,clamp-style, solvent-resistantApplication Squeegee Framewith threaded handle adaptor for self-leveling materials,thin materials or concrete restoration applications. Kraft’snew soft-grip Squeegee Trowel can be used by hand or witha broom-style handle to smooth a variety of coatings. Andits ProFormTaping Knives, in blue steel and stainless steel,now carry Kraft’s patented ProForm handle.

Frames and sundriesFor big commercial and industrial projects, Bestt

Liebco has weighed in with a 12-18-inch AdjustableFrame ($19.99) with a matching 18-inch tray called TheTub ($34.99). The frame’s ergonomic, acme-threaded de-sign fits most extension poles, while The Tub features arugged, five-gallon, solvent-resistant tray.

New sundries are also on the front burner at Bercom,which has added theHANDy Roller Pail to its Pro SeriesPail line.
