SchoolP5 Learning Experience
Transition from P4 to P5
Important Information
Level Focus
Starting from 2020 P5 cohort, school-based CA & SA results & targets will be presented in Achievement Levels (ALs).
Each subject will be scored using 8 ALs, with AL1 being the best.
Children who demonstrate similar achievement for a subject will receive the same AL.
Why are the mark ranges uneven across ALs – the ranges are narrower at the higher ALs?
The ALs & mark ranges reflect the curriculum and reality of learning.
We often find ourselves improving significantly when we learn something new. When we get better, the improvements become small steps.

PSLE Scoring & S1 posting from 2021
PSLE Score is obtained by adding ALs of 4 subjects.
The score ranges from 4 to 32, with 4 being the best.
Students will be placed in secondary school courses (Express, Normal (Academic) or Normal (Technical) based on their PSLE score.

PSLE Score remains the first criterion for S1 posting.
If two students with the same PSLE Score vie for a place in a secondary school, the following tie-breakers will be used:
1. Citizenship
2. Choice order of schools
3. Computerised Balloting
S1 Posting
Foundation subject grades will be graded in 3 scoring bands from AL A to C.
Like Standard subject ALs, the Foundation subject ALs will reflect a student’s level of achievement, rather than how they have performed relative to their peers.

Children’s PSLE Score will be the sum of 4 ALs scores of all Standard & Foundation subjects they take.
For S1 posting, similar to the current PSLE scoring system, Foundation level subject scores will be converted to the equivalent standard level subject scores before the total score is calculated.
This is based on the learning & assessment load of the subjects.
The total score indicates the children’s readiness to access the curriculum at secondary level.

• With Full Subject-based Banding in secondary schs,
children may take stronger subjects at a higher level.
The eligibility criteria is intended to ensure that children can cope with the higher academic load. It takes reference from current criteria
For those who do not meet the criteria, secondary schools will continue to have the flexibility to offer HMTL if they are assessed to have high ability & interest in MTL & taking it will not affect their performance in other subjects.
Eligibility for secondary school Higher Mother Tongue Language (HMTL)
(i) PSLE Score of 8 or better
OR
(ii) PSLE Score of 9 to 14 inclusive;
and attain
AL1 / AL2 in MTL or
Distinction / Merit in HMTL

This advantage applies before the tie-breakers for S1 Posting
Children with better PSLE Score will be posted first
Among children with the same PSLE Score, students with better grade in HCL will be given priority for S1 posting

• Higher academic demands coming along with cognitive development
– extend content coverage
– deepen conceptual understandings
– increase in number of questions in assessments
– increase in questions of higher order of difficulty
• Matters relating to personal biological & psychological changes
• Matters relating to their relationship with friends
Transition from P4 to P5
Challenges common to P5 children
Language Learning
Oral: Able to express in-depth opinion on topics
Comprehension: Ability to comprehend longer passages,
analyse and derive the underlying meaning in the passages
Writing: Have an ability to write fluently and vividly with a
rich content
Transition from P4 to P5
Mathematics
More Synoptic Assessment
Tests children’s ability in making connections between two
different concepts
Along with an increase in the topics coverage at P5, a larger
variety of synoptic questions can tested
Example of Synoptic Assessment
P4: Identify symmetric figures
P5: Properties of triangle, parallelogram, rhombus & trapezium
Sam drew 5 figures shown below. A is a circle, B is an equilateral triangle, C is a parallelogram, D is a rhombus and E is a trapezium.
Name all the figures above that have at least one line of symmetry.

Stay Confident in the face of Challenges 1. Learn when to study and play
- Do the important things first.- Upon settling down at home, get on to do their homework.- Do less important thing only after more important thing are done.
(Regulate addiction to handphone by offering alternatives)
2. Keep up with the ‘SPIRIT’ of Learning = adopt a Growth Mindset- S trategise (work out a way to achieve)- P ursuit of Excellence (put in best effort)- I can do attitude (believe in self)- R esilience (explore alternative solution)- I have yet to achieve it (learn from past experience)- T eamwork (seek help from others & you are not alone)
3. Continue to be kind and empathise with others

Subject-based Banding (SBB)
Because every child is unique, and has different aptitudes, capabilities & talents, SBB was introduced to cater to the different abilities of each child so that we can prepare him/her for life.
Find out more at https://www.moe.gov.sg/education/primary/subject-based-banding#sthash.gXvNRB43.dpuf
At P5, the children are taking subject combination of parental choice.
How does SBB work at the end of P5?
Children take subject combination

Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) End of P6
Direct School Admission (DSA)• Allow children to apply to some schools before PSLE• Support their holistic development• Allow children to develop their talents, potential & achievements• Allow children to continue to develop their strength in sec schools which offer
distinctive programmes like sports, Math & Science, performing arts, leadership, etc.
DSA allows children to seek admission to a secondary (sec) school based on your talents, potential & achievements that cannot be demonstrated at PSLE
For now, you may go to https://beta.moe.gov.sg/secondary/dsa/ to find out more about the strengths & distinctive programmes sec schools have to offer
New single centralised DSA application portal. More will be shared when your child is at P6.
Growing Years Series (GYS) from P5
As mentioned earlier, students will be faced challenges with matters relating to their personal biological & psychological changes & relationship with friends.
GYS aims at helping the children to
• Get to know themselves & build healthy relationships with friends anchored on the love and support from their families
• Learn ways to keep themselves safe (e.g. from social networking)
• Navigate changes during puberty and develop respect for themselves and others
Conducted
• over 8 FTGP periods in P5 & P6
• by specially trained school teachers
Parents may opt your child out of the programme
