NATIONAL SEPTEMBER 11 MEMORIAL & MUSEUM 2013 Year end Update 32 NATIONAL SEPTEMBER 11 MEMORIAL & MUSEUM 2013 Year end Update

In the wake of the 9/11 attacks, we made a collective promise to never forget

those who perished. The National September 11 Memorial has helped us to

keep that promise by serving as a gathering place for the millions of people

from across the country and every corner of the globe who come to honor the

innocent and remember the nearly 3,000 men, women, and children killed in

the September 11, 2011 and February 26, 1993 terrorist attacks.

Next year, the opening of the 9/11 Memorial Museum will help us to fulfill another

commitment — to educate the next generation. Children are growing up now

in a world that has been forever changed by 9/11. We have a responsibility to

share the history of what happened, so that it is passed down from generation

to generation.

As visitors gather at the edges of the Memorial pools, below them workers are

carefully preparing the Museum, mounting artifacts, installing lights, finishing

floors, and attending to every detail required for opening. A strong partnership

with the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey under the leadership of

Governor Andrew Cuomo and Governor Chris Christie, has kept the Museum

construction on schedule. And thanks to the generous support of thousands

of individuals, businesses, and organizations, the doors to the Museum will

open in 2014.

The stories housed in the Museum could not be told without the contributions

of people most closely impacted by the attacks. We are grateful to the family

members, first responders, survivors, recovery workers, downtown residents,

and many others, who have stepped forward to share their stories, remember

loved ones, donate artifacts, photos, video and other materials. These donations

will enable the Museum to preserve a tragic history that speaks to loss and

remembrance, courage and compassion, resilience and hope.

Sincerely,

Mayor Michael r. Bloomberg Chair, National September 11 Memorial & Museum

MESSAGE FROM MaYor Michael r. BlooMBergChair of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum

This year has been one of truly remarkable progress at the 9/11 Memorial. The

Memorial continues to be one of our nation’s most sacred and most visited

places. Since opening two years ago, the Memorial has welcomed over 11 million

visitors from every U.S. state and all over the world as they honor the lives of

those who were taken from us too soon in the attacks.

We’ve also made great strides toward completing the 9/11 Memorial Museum as

we move toward the opening in spring 2014, and it has been deeply moving to

see this historic institution take shape. Monumental artifacts, including pieces

of steel carrying messages from the recovery effort and first responder vehicles

representing the courage and sacrifice of our police officers and firefighters,

are now in their final resting places in the Museum. The Museum will also house

intimate objects, such as one flight attendant’s wings and a recovered watch

worn by a hero aboard Flight 93. With every exhibition panel that is installed, we

move one step closer to sharing the Museum with the world. As significant as

2013 has been, 2014 promises to be a truly exceptional year as we welcome our

first visitors into the Museum and prepare to launch new public programs, events,

educational resources, and mobile apps that will help to honor the memories of

those killed and preserve the history of 9/11 for generations to come.

On behalf of the 9/11 Memorial staff and Board of Directors, I would like to

express our appreciation to every individual who has supported the Museum’s

mission of commemoration and education through generous donations or by

sharing their 9/11 story. We are also indebted to those who have chosen to

help by volunteering. Thanks to our supporters and volunteers, the memories

of those who perished will live on, the heroism of our first responders will be

honored, and the spirit of unity that came to define our country during the

aftermath of 9/11 will be forever be part of U.S. history.

I look forward to sharing the Museum with you and your loved ones. In the

months ahead, I’ll be providing additional news and updates on our progress

and plans for opening.

Warm regards,

Joseph c. daniels President & CEO, National September 11 Memorial & Museum

1 preparing to open the 9/11 MeMorial MUseUMOngoing preparations for the spring 2014 opening of the 9/11 Memorial Museum continued at a steady pace in 2013. All major construction on the Museum pavilion was completed and throughout the Museum large artifacts were installed, such as steel fragments of the Twin Towers and FDNY Engine Company Truck 21.

On October 29, 2012, Superstorm Sandy made landfall in New York City. Because

of adjacent construction areas at the World Trade Center site, storm surges

caused flooding in the Museum. None of the artifacts in the Museum at the time

of the storm sustained irreparable damage. While flood mitigation aspects were

already part of the Museum design, since the storm, more contingencies have

been added and redundancies are in place to protect the space and the artifacts

in it. After an extensive clean-up effort, project construction resumed in February

2013. Since the flooding and recovery, the construction of the Museum has moved

expeditiously, and all major work in the exhibition spaces contained within the

North Tower footprint were completed in September 2013 and the spaces within

the South Tower footprint were built out in November 2013.

Build out of the Memorial plaza continued this year with the completion of the

southeast corner at Liberty and Greenwich streets. Construction of the west side of

the plaza, near West Street, progressed and sidewalk construction is anticipated to

start in the new year. The northeast corner of the plaza, near the Museum’s entrance,

was partially paved and 22 trees were planted in the fall of 2013.

Production is complete for individual portraits of those killed that will line the walls

of the memorial exhibition, In Memoriam, communicating the scale of loss resulting

from 9/11. Unique audio-visual profiles for each of the 2,983 victims have been

created and more than a third of these profiles include recorded remembrances

from family, friends, and coworkers. A recording booth within the Museum will allow

visitors who knew someone killed on 9/11 or in the 1993 bombing to add their own

remembrance.

The Museum is deeply grateful for the thousands of contributions to the exhibition that have been provided by family members. Material submitted by families will continue to be accepted after the Museum opens its doors.

MeMorial exhiBition progress

All of the large artifacts are presently

installed in the Museum. These 36

artifacts include enormous steel

fragments of the Twin Towers twisted

and torn by the direct impact of Flight 11,

rescue vehicles severely damaged during

the towers’ collapses, and limestone

recovered from the damaged section of

the Pentagon.

The FDNY Engine Company 21 truck,

which is housed in the Museum’s

historical exhibition, was dispatched to

the World Trade Center after hijacked

Flight 175 struck the South Tower. Engine

21 was parked beneath an elevated

walkway on 9/11. When the North Tower

collapsed, the exposed cab of the fire

engine was destroyed while the rest of it

was virtually untouched.

Standing 36 feet tall, the Last Column

will be a centerpiece of the Museum’s

Foundation hall. The 58-ton steel

column was removed from the site in a

ceremony that marked the official end

of the Ground Zero recovery effort. It

is adorned from its base to top with

photographs, prayer cards, and other tributes left by first responders and recovery

workers. In the summer of 2013, the Last Column was seen upright and uncovered

for the first time since it left the World Trade Center site on May 30, 2002. While

uncovered, the column was photographed for an interactive media piece that will

allow visitors to explore the column and learn about the mementoes and messages

that cover its surface.

In addition, the off-site production of exhibition components was completed. As

of December, all media exhibition pieces had neared completion. The installation

of media components has also begun, including the introductory media piece, “We

Remember,” which will be the first exhibit visitors encounter in the Museum.

The following objects suggest the range of gifts that were acquired in 2013.

Lorraine G. Bay ID badge.

With 37 years on the job, United 93 Flight Attendant Lorraine G. Bay, 58, was fourth

in seniority out of approximately 700 flight attendants who worked for United

Airlines out of Newark, New Jersey. Despite her veteran status, Bay reportedly

preferred working in the coach section of the flight, where her easy smile,

professional confidence and caring ways placed passengers at ease — especially

children and senior citizens. A mentor to younger flight attendants, she achieved

a reputation for never failing to

acknowledge the birthdays, other

life milestones, and challenges

faced by her co-workers and family

with special cards and unique gifts.

Two of Bay’s colleagues received

cards postmarked September 11,

2001, indicating that they were

probably mailed that decisive

morning before she checked in for

her San Francisco-bound flight.

The recovered ID badge was found

by investigators at the Flight 93

crash site near Shanksville, PA, and

donated by her husband, Erich Bay.

3 an expanding ColleCtion The Museum’s permanent collection continues to be enriched with artifacts, oral histories, photographs, and other materials that will help to tell the story of 9/11. Partnerships with StoryCorps, Voices of September 11th’s 9/11 Living Memorial, the 9/11 Tribute Center, Project Rebirth, New York Says Thank You, My Good Deed, and other organizations have helped expand the Museum’s collections and provide compelling content to the exhibitions, while also sharing information about the Museum with a broader audience.

4 CoMMitMent to edUCationThe 9/11 Memorial Museum furthered its commitment to education by expanding its resources to help students, teachers, and parents learn about and discuss 9/11.

NEW ONLINE MATERIALS In addition to the Teach + Learn section at 911memorial.org,

new educational resources were launched on the 9/11 Memorial website in 2013.

The 9/11 Primary Resource repository was created, highlighting key documents,

speeches, executive orders, and legislation relevant to 9/11 and its aftermath.

TEAChING 9/11 In July, the 9/11 Memorial and Museum hosted the second annual

“9/11 and American Memory” seminar with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American

history. The seminar examined the historical causes and background, immediate

impact, and developing legacies of the 9/11 attacks. Drawing from material in the

Museum’s collection, 24 teachers selected from around the country took part and

explored the nature of meaning-making and memory in the aftermath of 9/11.

The brick is one of several extricated by Fox News correspondent Dominic Di-Natale

from the foundation of Osama bin Laden’s residence at the Abbottabad, Pakistan

compound, which served as his safe house prior to capture and death on May 1, 2011.

On the scene soon after the U.S. Navy SEALs’ raid on the compound, Di-Natale, a

seasoned war correspondent stationed in Islamabad, returned to the site to chronicle

the local response to this stunning historical event. After the Pakistani authorities

razed the structure in late February 2012, Di-Natale chiseled out several bricks from

the foundation of bin Laden’s house to retain as souvenirs, one of which he donated

to the Museum. his cameraman filmed Di-Natale removing the bricks to verify where

they were taken.

In The Stories They Tell, the 9/11 story is told through profiles of key artifacts in the

Museum’s exhibitions and collections that serve as a touchstone to the day and

its aftermath. Co-edited by Museum Director Alice Greenwald and Vice President

of Education and Family Programs Cliff Chanin and written by Museum staff, the

book showcases poignant artifacts as monumental as the Survivor Stairs — which

offered an escape for hundreds fleeing the towers — and as intimate as a loved one’s

wedding band that illuminate a range of experiences, emotions, and responses both

during and after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and February 26, 1993.

The book is available for purchase online from the museum store at

COMMEMORATION

oBserving the 12th anniversarY

As in years past, the 9/11 Memorial led the nation in a day of remembrance with a

ceremony commemorating the 12th anniversary of the attacks. The ceremony was

led by family members of those killed and included the reading of the names and

six moments of silence representing when each tower was struck and fell, the attack

on the Pentagon, and the crash of Flight 93 near Shanksville, P.A.

The powerful “Tribute in Light” also returned, illuminating the skies above lower

Manhattan where the Twin Towers once stood with two beams of light through the

night of September 11 and into the dawn of the following day.

COMMEMORATION

20th anniversarY of the 1993 Wtc BoMBing

This year marked the 20th anniversary of the February 26, 1993 terrorist attack

on the World Trade Center. In partnership with the Port Authority of New York

and New Jersey, a ceremony was held to honor and remember the six people who

perished. The ceremony included the reading of the victims’ names and a moment

of silence at 12:18 p.m., the exact time terrorists detonated explosives in the parking

garage of the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

salUte to service

The connection between 9/11 and our military is strong. There are thousands who

were inspired to serve their country in response to the attacks. The 9/11 Memorial

has served as a place for military reenlistment and promotional ceremonies. Medal

of honor recipients Dakota Meyer, a former Marine Corps Corporal, and Army Staff

Sergeant Ty Carter also visited to pay tribute.

On Memorial Day, a special ceremony was held in honor of all those who have

defended and continue to defend our country. To commemorate Veterans Day,

the 9/11 Memorial hosted a six-day tribute to veterans, including a wreath-laying

ceremony attended by NYC Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly and NYC Fire

Commissioner Salvatore Cassano. Also on Veterans Day, yellow roses were placed

on the Memorial at the names of those killed in the 9/11 attacks who served in the

U.S. military.

COMMEMORATION sUrvivor tree prograM: helping to heal, helping to groW

hundreds of trees grace the plaza of the 9/11 Memorial, but one is unlike the rest.

It’s a Callery pear tree that once stood on the original World Trade Center plaza.

The collapse of the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001 nearly destroyed it, but it

was nursed back to health, and today it stands strong again at the Memorial, where

it is often adorned with tributes from the Memorial’s millions of visitors. It is known

around the world as the “Survivor Tree.”

Beginning in September 2013, the 9/11 Memorial launched a new initiative to

donate Survivor Tree seedlings to communities that have overcome tragedy. These

communities represent the spirit of the Survivor Tree, and their own tree will serve

as an inspirational landmark conveying resiliency and hope within the community

just as the Survivor Tree does at the 9/11 Memorial.

The initial group of seedlings was presented at a ceremonial launch with the New

York Mets at Citi Field to representatives from the three cities: Far Rockaways, NY

for the impact sustained from Superstorm Sandy in 2012; Prescott, AZ, in honor

of the Granite Mountain hotshots, an elite firefighting squad that lost 19 men on

June 30, 2013; and Boston, MA, in honor of the three killed and many injured in the

bombing of the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013.
