Year End Reflections

I s it true? Am I really writ-ing the December newslet-

ter article? It doesn’t seem that long ago that I was writ-ing the April article and we were talking about the spring flowers coming up and all the exciting rides that NC-I had planned for this year. Now the weather channel is using that four letter word snow.

Humpty Dumpty is ready to go again with a new water pump and front rotors and brakes. He will be sad as the next few months’ means that he will spend most of his time in the garage.

November was a slow month but then again with the holidays com-ing there was really only a half a month to plan activities.

NC-I moved the monthly meeting to the second Saturday due to Thanksgiving at the end of the month. We had 29 members at-tend and one guest, Mike, from G2. The following Tuesday was Cook’s Night Out. What a night that turned out to be! We went to Bay Breeze in Hendersonville on a very cold, snowy and very windy night. Still 22 hardy souls from the

chapter showed up for some good seafood eaten.

The next activity that NC-I has coming up is the Country Tonite Christmas Show in Pigeon Forge. This Christmas musical will be en-tertaining with lots of laughs and good music that everyone is sure to enjoy. Last I heard we have 19 attending. Almost everyone is stay-ing over. For information give me a call. I think that everyone staying over has already made their reservations. Oh yeah, lest I forget to mention it, we will be going over early for some good ole southern food.

Dave & Dianne Smith

Note: There will be no monthly meeting in December due to the holidays. The monthly meeting location is changed to Ryan’s on Brevard Rd (NC-191) beginning January 25, 2020. See inside for details.

GWRRA Chapter NC-I Sponsorship Your ad in this newsletter will be sent 12 times a year (once a month) to our chapter members, GWRRA chapters all

over the state of North Carolina, the NC State Directors and others. It will also be posted on the Chapter NC-I Website:

gwrranci.org. Your support is greatly appreciated and will help Chapter NC-I to operate throughout the year. Thank You.

The 14th will be our NC-I Christ-mas Party. It is being held at Jerry and Brenda’s party house. Thank you Jerry and Brenda for hosting this event again this year. The party will be a fun time with games, mu-sic and food. There will be a CD time of upcoming events for 2020 and a recap of 2019. Of course we will be entertained with some jokes that eve-ryone always looks forward to. LOL

I believe that every-one knows NC-I big announcement by now. If not then here it is. Starting with the January meeting NC-I has changed our meeting location. We will no longer be at the Country Pride res-taurant at exit 37. Our new location will be Ryan’s Steakhouse on NC Hwy 191 at the corner of Ridge-field Blvd just south the Asheville Outlets at I-26 exit 33. The address is:

Ryan’s Steakhouse

1000 Brevard Rd Asheville NC (828) 665-9963

NC-I will continue to meet on the

4th Saturday of the month. We will eat at 9 and meet at 10.

Dianne and I want to thank our entire NC-I family for the support that you have given us and the chapter. NC-I has had a great year and it is YOU that have made it happen. The staff has been terrific and come through on many occa-sions. NC-I is a strong chapter and

staff has volunteered many hours to make this as great as it is. Take time to say thanks to a staff mem-ber, they have ridden many miles, made trips to the store and bank, reached into their own pockets and made countless phone calls and texts to make your chapter great. Thank you NC-I staff.

Thanksgiving is this week. I hope that you have lots to eat, spend time with your family and that your

football team wins.

This is the final newsletter of the year so Dianne and I want to wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas. This is the time of year when we reflect on family and friends. For some in our NC-I family it will be difficult. We have lost loved ones, perhaps gotten a report from the doctor that we didn’t want to hear,

maybe lost our job or suffered some other economic set-back. We want you to know that your NC-I family is here for you. Some have had terrific blessings. NC-I technical advi-sor Phil was just re-cently made a grand-father again. He is so proud and excited. It is during this time of the year that we cele-brate the birth of another baby that

was born 2000+ years ago.

Dianne and I wish everyone a blessed and wonderful Christmas and a Very Happy New Year.

Be safe in your travels until we meet again and in the meantime just…

Thanks for Your Holiday Donations!

T hanksgiving. David and I have been reflecting on how our

group has become an extended family We thank you all for the friendship we have throughout the year and look forward to making more memories at the Christmas Dinner and coming year.

Speaking of the Christmas Dinner. There are a few folks (you know who you are (smile) that haven't send me your food item to bring. Please do so as you can so I can let the last few know what items need filling. Either send me an email or call my home number please ( I generally don't use my cell).

We should have some exciting rides with overnight stays along

with the after meeting, 2nd Satur-day and numerous adventure rides. Keep you fingers crossed for a great year of weather for rides.

Again I thank the generosity of NC-I for their money and contri-butions to J. Iverson Riddle De-velopment Center. Our last meet-ing garnered $100.00. We pur-chased another $120.00 of re-quested items. Thus, our total for this year of contributions was over $300.00 in goods for the organiza-tion.

Mike from G-2 donated a huge bag of samples to the Veterans Restoration Quarters. They are currently opening their doors for the Code Purple nights, and we’re

grateful for the ability to supply their guests with the basics.

We wish you all Happy, Healthy Holidays and a Merry Christmas with those you love.

W inter riding can have its own rewards with clear blue

skies. A bright sun may be shining and traffic is usually lighter as many flock to the south for the warmth. I find my tolerance for cold weather riding has faded away, especially since my work has me in the cold Monday thru Fri-day.

Most of us who remain for winter in cold climates put our motorcy-cles to bed and save the riding for warmer days. A good cleaning and

polish, maybe changing the oil, and then finding the battery tender that hasn’t been used in months is the usual procedure. If this describes you then you have little to worry about when it comes to hypother-mia while riding the motorcycle.

However, if you are a four season rider you have probably experi-enced some of the dangerous con-ditions that lead to hypothermia.

So what is hypothermia? Don’t confuse hypothermia with hyper-thermia, with means being over-heated. A quick definition de-scribes hypothermia as a condition of having a body temperature to low, typically dangerously too low. Having a core temperature of 95 degrees or lower can cause hypo-thermia.

If you’ve ever experienced hypo-

thermia you know it’s an unpleasant feeling and can lead to serious harm. Temperatures at 32 or lower can lead to frostbite, and it’s called bite for a reason.

Symptoms of hypothermia include: shivering, slurred speech or mum-bling, shallow slow breathing, weak pulse, lack of coordination, drowsi-ness or low energy, confusion or memory loss, and loss of con-sciousness. Any of those symp-toms would be scary and very un-pleasant while we ride our motor-cycles.

Understanding wind chill can bet-ter explain why motorcycle riding when it’s cold outside can lead to hypothermia. Wind chill factor is a formula that shows the cooling effect of air moving across our body. We’ve all experienced wind

chill, and anyone who rides a mo-torcycle is very aware how much colder you feel moving down the road at speed versus sitting still in the parking lot. Air temperature and wind chill are problem for us motorcyclists, and we need extra gear to compensate for the cooler air. Glancing at the chart will re-veal how much colder it feels when we’re moving at different speeds and temperatures.

When motionless, the human body is surrounded by a microclimate as a result of convective heat being released. Wind, even the slightest amount, disturbs this and produce a cooling effect that can cause so much discomfort. I noticed this many years ago when I was in a pool. When you first hop in the water it feels really cold but if you stand really still and no one else is making waves you’ll notice the wa-ter closest to your body gets warmer. The heat being released by our body creates this warmer microclimate and the second you move you have disturbed the microclimate and the water feels cold again. The same is true for air flowing over our body, like when we ride our motorcycles. Wind breaks this microclimate and the faster the air moves the cooler it feels, to a point. After a certain speed the cooling effect plateaus and no longer feels colder.

Wearing proper gear preserves this warm environment around our bodies and is a perfect time for all the gear all the time (ATGATT). Cold weather gear should be made of a material that blocks air, such as leather or textile material designed to

block wind. A thin cotton type jacket or similar is almost useless when the temperature drops be-cause cotton lets the air flow through. Sometimes you can get away with using a rain suit to block the air and wear a lighter jacket underneath.

Layering is an effective way to ad-just to temperature swings that are so common in mountainous areas. I have no experience with heated riding gear but I have heard that the warmth provided by heated gear can really extend the riding season comfort. [Editor’s note: Yes it does! Especially with the combination of heated jacket liner and gloves.] I recently added heated grips to my Goldwing, and they really help keep the cold bite away from my hands but I think heated gloves might work better. Heated gear is wise investment if you plan to ride when the ther-mometer dips into the frigid zone.

Beside the risks of frostbite or hypothermia—as if that’s not bad enough—there are some good rea-

sons to stop riding once tempera-ture stays at 32 degrees or lower. Even on a sunny day the roadway can be so cold that ice can form in minutes developing an ice patch that would be devastating for a motorcyclist. I remember a winter when the condensation from our exhaust froze the second it hit the pavement making random ice patches.

For the sake of your safety, just save the winter riding for when the temperatures are well above freez-ing. Keep in mind that there can be many lingering ice or snow patches in the shadows even if it seems too warm for ice or snow. Additionally, after the first snow event there will be sand, salt and pea gravel in areas that are prone to freezing. The pea gravel is very difficult to spot since it blends in very well with the asphalt surface and a patch of gravel, sand, ice or snow will have you on your butt faster than you can say “I miss summer”.
