Principal’s Message
I would like to begin my message this week by express-
ing what a great delight and joy it was to have the oppor-
tunity this morning to take our Year 7 students for our
Founder’s Day Worship. Due to the weather forecast for
today and the comfort of our Lower College students, we
reached the decision to only hold Founder’s Day Wor-
ship for our Year 7 students, but what a wonderful deci-
sion it was, with 270 students entering our Hall in pin-
drop silence as the Worship Band played. What followed
was a mix of appropriate formality for the occasion, cele-
brating our Foundation in 2008 through a liturgy centred
on The Feast of Christ the King and a homily that I was
able to deliver focused on our Foundations. During the
talk. I could not fail to mention the devastating attacks
that occurred in Paris only one week ago today. The
students responded, answering questions, exploring the
images that were shown (one of which I am sure you
have noted at the top of this bulletin where we have re-
placed our usual College Via Veritas Logo with the col-
ours of the French Flag, the Tricolore). Their answers
focused on compassion, care, thoughtfulness, solidarity
and love that we should show one another and, at such
a time as this, to all those who have been impacted by
the horror of last Friday. And then, without missing a
beat, their answers became about following Jesus
Christ, our King, the peacemaker and one we should all
follow. A wonderful moment in the life of the College. As
we closed in prayer and Father Mike continued the litur-
gy the students began to prepare themselves for singing
You Are My Vision (a version of Be Thou My Vision). As
Mr Williams stepped to the front to go through a little bit
of Maths (!), encouraging our 270 students to sing as if
the 980 students from Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 were all pre-
sent, the students began to sing - and what a joy and
wonderful way to close the thoughtful time we had, re-
membering those in Paris and focusing finally and com-
pletely on Christ the King, as our ultimate vision for all
that we do, all that we are and all that we aspire to be at
our College. Thank you Year 7 students.

Issue 11 20th November 2015
“We pray for the people of Paris at this time of mourning, distress and fear. We pray for all who have died that you,
our Loving God will welcome them into your arms. We pray that you will comfort all who grieve, as well as the in-
jured and the fearful. We pray at this time that terrorism may be overcome and violent hearts turned to paths of
peace. In the face of hatred we pray that we may show forth love, and in this time of despair we remember our call-
ing to be lights in a darkened world. Amen.”
Prayer taken from a message from the Suffragan Bishop of Europe, the Rt Revd David Hamid to the two Church of
England churches in Central Paris – St George's in Rue Auguste-Vacquerie and St Michael's in Rue D'Aguesseau.

Thank you for your support so far with regards to our fortnightly Literacy Focus.
For the next fortnight, our focus is on:
its and it’s
its is a possessive pronoun meaning of it or belonging to it
E.g. The creature opened its mouth.
it’s is a contraction (a shortened version) for it is or it has.
E.g. It’s started raining again!
It’s nearly time for bed.
Tip: If you aren't sure which one to use, try replacing it with it is or it has. If that makes
sense, use it's. If not, try replacing it with her or his. If that makes sense, then use its.
Try this website for a short quiz: http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/words/its-or-it-s
Please support us in our bid to develop literacy skills and accuracy by helping your child to check
through his/her work and look out for the correct use of its and it’s.
If you have any ideas or feedback on our fortnightly Literacy Focus, please do not hesitate to get
in touch: [email protected].

Romans 5 Verses 1 to 8
Therefore, since we have been justi-fied through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungod-ly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demon-strates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Governors’ Building Fund - We are very proud of the education that we provide at Christ the
King College. However, you may or may not be aware that, as a faith based school, we receive no addi-
tional funding and rely on the goodwill of our parents. Unlike other countries, the privileges of receiving a
faith based education in our country is free to parents and I hope that some of our parental community
will be in a position to aid us financially at this time. For the benefit of new parents to Christ the King Col-
lege, the responsibility for work to voluntary aided school premises is shared between the school govern-
ing body and the local authority. The contribution will be part of the 10% governing body’s liability which
can be claimed in grant of 90% for any immediate building works. All parents are asked to contribute to
the fund £2 per child per week. Please send your contribution together with the gift aid declaration form
to the Finance Office, Mrs Howard, on the Upper College. You may also pay on the ParentPay scheme
or set up a standing order. Please will you use the details below if you wish to pay by standing order.
We would also like to remind parents who have not yet arranged to make a payment that this monthly
option is still available.

Prickly Guests Staying at College
The Christ the King College St. Francis Club is a nature appreciation society for Year 7 and
8 students. We meet fortnightly to discuss our love of nature, talk about the environment
and undertake practical projects, including keeping the bird feeders topped up. It is a time
for students to socialise and have great fun and also experience moments of stillness, ap-
preciating the beauty of Creation. We have just installed our first Hedgehog Hotel in an un-
disclosed (for the privacy of our prospective guests!) location on Lower College. Here are
members of St. Francis club proudly pictured with the completed hotel.

Erasmus+ Totalitarianism vs Tolerance project
A selection of students from Years 10, 11, 12 and 13 have been working on the Totalitarianism vs Tolerance project every Tuesday lunchtime. This Erasmus+ project has been funded by the British Council, and involves Hanse-Berufs-Kolleg, Lemgo, in Germany, Liceul tehnologic "Iorgu Vârnav Liteanu", Liteni in Romania and Lycée Alain Fournier in Bourges, France. This group of students visit-ed France in September and it is planned that the French group will make a return visit next month. With the tragedy that occurred in Paris on Friday, we are awaiting confirma-tion that this visit will continue. We will of course keep stu-dents and parents informed whilst holding the students
and families we have worked with in our prayers.
In commemoration of the fall of the Berlin Wall (9th Novem-
ber 1989), a German lunch was offered by the canteen.

Carisbrooke College 12
The combined Year 10/11 rugby team played their first game of the season on Vectis
Field, and suffered a narrow defeat in an exciting and hard fought contest. Both teams did
their best in difficult conditions, after earlier downpours and in increasing second-half
darkness.
Christ the King College were first on the scoreboard inside ten minutes, after good driving
play by the forwards was finished by a strong run from Sebastian Crouch. Carisbrooke
College fought back and had a good spell of pressure, almost scoring on two occasions
but being denied by last ditch defending and the whistle of referee Mr Harry Dye. Christ
the King College retained their 5-0 advantage at halftime.
Carisbrooke College started the second half in top form and levelled the scores almost
immediately, before the conversion gave them a 7-5 lead. Now behind for the first time,
Christ the King College upped their game and dominated most of the rest of the match,
seeking another score to regain the lead. Sol Wood had a fine game at scrum-half and
Luke Blackman was impressive in the forwards, as was Ben Sanders on his debut. How-
ever, a combination of determined Carisbrooke College defence and some poor option-
taking by Christ the King College kept the score-line in the visitors' favour. In fact, Caris-
brooke College looked dangerous from turnover ball, but some great tackles from Rio
Penn-Grice and Alfie Caporaso-Foster saved the day. In the gloom of the final minutes,
Carisbrooke College lifted the siege and forced their way over for a second try.
Christ the King College showed great heart in this defeat, but know they need to be smart-
er with ball in hand in their next two matches away to Ryde School and Medina College.
They were missing a couple of Year 11 players and can be optimistic for the future.
Team: Harvey Stanton, Rio Penn-Grice, Sam Woods, Sebastian Crouch, Jake Toulson,
Louis Malkin, Sol Wood, Ben Burnett, Morgan Collingwood, Ben Sanders, Josh Collins,
Stephen Williams, Michael Joyce (C), Alfie Caporaso-Foster, Luke Blackman, Joe Patey.
