What this means for you

• Now that you have watched the video you should understand better the importance of the marks achieved.

• The two exam papers will test your ability to answer questions that judge 3 different assessment objectives, AO1, AO2 & AO3.

• To get the marks for each assessment objective you must show different things in your answer. See the next slide for what is required.

3 assessment objectives in PE are:

• AO1 – show your knowledge of the topic in question

• AO2 – application of the knowledge to a sporting example/practical activity

• AO3 – show the impact of the knowledge on the performer or performance. This may be good or bad, the advantages or disadvantages, the pros or cons, the positive or negative.

• It is important therefore before you start the course in September that you:

• A) know what the different objectives mean

• B) you can give an answer appropriate to the assessment objective

• The following activities will give you some practice at using the different assessment objectives.

• To be able to recognise the 3 assessment objectives used in GCSE PE theory.

• To practice answering questions with reference to the 3 assessment objectives.

Task• For the following questions on each slide work

out an answer to each part to show AO1, AO2 & AO3.

• Write out your answer to each part as a separate sentence to practice presenting your information in a structured way.

• You may need to firstly find out what the key word/topic means first to get the knowledge.

• A sample question has been provided for you to use as a template to follow.

Example to use• AO1 – State what is meant by an isometric muscle

contraction.

• An isometric muscle contraction is where the length of the muscle does not change when it contracts.

• AO2 - Using a situation from a sport of your choice explain when an isometric muscle contraction is needed in performance?

• In a rugby scrum the players must use isometric muscle contractions to hold the joints of their bodies stationary.

• AO3 - What positive impact can using an isometric contraction have on performance in the scrum.

• The scrum will be stronger and more secure if the players do not move as they push, and so the opponents will not be able to win the ball as it is rolled in.

• AO1 - Describe the location of the scapula.

• AO2 – Using a situation from a sport of your choice explain when the scapula might be useful?

• AO3 - Justify the function of the scapula in this sport.

In summary

• By attempting these questions you have practised exam style questioning for PE.

• Showing AO1 is the most important as there are more marks on each paper for this than AO2 & AO3 together.

• Remember what the 3 assessment objectives are ready for September.
