We would like to extend a warm welcome to you at the start of what we are sure will be a happy and succesful partnership. We believe that the success of your children in school depends on such a partnership. We rely upon you - our new parents - to give that support which is crucial to the development of our young people.

We hope that you will find this booklet helpful, not just now, but also as a reference guide for the future, as it sets out in some detail the way that school is organised and some of our systems and procedures.

TEACHING AND FORMCURRICULUM

FORM GROUPS

The curriculum has been designed in such a way to enable all the young people to become:

Succesful learners• who enjoy learning, make progress and achieve.Confident individuals• who are able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives.Responsible citizens• who make a positive contribution to society.

With this in mind, the Year 7 curriculum is focused on the competencies and skills required by students to be effective learners at Rivington & Blackrod, and throughout their lives. Every student will attend lessons in the core subjects of Maths, Science, English, Modern Languages and Physical Education.

The remainder of the timetable is focused on developing the lifelong learning skills and competencies of each student. These skills are introduced and extended in two lessons a week of dedicated Learning to Learn time delivered by Form Tutors. The same competencies and skills are then used by students to work across the areas of Technology, Humanities and Expressive Arts. These areas will follow broad themes running from “Me” and “Me and My School” in the first term, through to “Me and the Universe” at the end of Year 7. These themes are designed to be inspiring, flexible, challenging and open ended, allowing each and every student to achieve their full potential.

Alongside the competency based curriculum runs the SEAL programme (Social Emotional Apect of Learning). SEAL is a comprehensive approach to promoting the social and emotional skills that underpin effective learning, positive behaviour, regular attendance, and the emotional health and well-being of all who learn and work in school.

The year is divided into 12 Form Groups of approximately 28 students, each Form Group has its own Form Tutor who will welcome your child first thing every morning during form time.

As a school we passionately believe that every child should know and feel they matter and strive to person-alise the curriculum as far as possible to mee the individual needs of every child. To allow us to achive this we have 12 Form Groups, split into 10 mixed ability Form Groups and 2 Access Form Groups.

The introduction of the two Access Groups has allowed us to create two smaller Form Groups (approx. 20 students) and to be very flexible in their curriculum diet. Places within the Access Groups are for students whose individual needs determine a demand for greater focus on English, Maths and Science. We will work with our students, their parents and their feeder primary schools to establish the right Form package for all our students, however, students entering the Access Groups will normally be achieving Level 3 (or a low level 4) at the end of year 6. Essentially these small, select groups will be taught a co-ordinated curriculum with one teacher for a maximum of half the week, with the focus upon raising achievement in the core subjects. The blocking allows total flexibility for individuals within the group to move into and out of the Access Group in each subject depending upon their aptitude for particular subjects.

Generally, a student will remain with the same Form Group for the first 3 years at RBHS. The Form Groups are changed because of student option preferences at the end of Year 9, and may be changed due to other factors at any time throughout Years 7 - 9.

The Form Tutor is the first point of contact for parents. He or she will see your child every morning and will have a full overview of your child’s progress.

Students will be informed which Form Group they are in on the first day of the new term.

Students are expected to be on the school premises by 8.40am when a warning bell will sound to signal entry into school. Lessons start at 8.45am and school ends at 3.15pm.

We expect all students to be punctual, both to the start of school and all lessons. We feel that it is important to instil in young people the need for punctuality. Consequently, any student who is avoidably late to school on more than 3 occasions will be place in an after school detention.3

Students who wish to bring a mobile phone to school must abide by the following rules:-

Mobile phones must not been seen in any school building (including ear-phones).•

Mobile phones must be turned off during lessons.•

If a phone is seen or heard in any school building it will be confiscated. A communication will be sent • home to your parent/carer and the phone held in the main school office until acknowledgement is received from your parent/carer, before being returned to you. However in the case of persistent confiscation of your phone your parent/carer will be informed and asked to collect in person.

Phones may not be used in lessons as calculators.•

Phones must be switched off and handed in at examination rooms.•

Phones may not be used in lessons for playing music. •

Students found abusing the use of a phone (e.g. sending threatening text messages) will be banned from • bringing a phone to school.

Students may use phones at breaks and lunch times OUTSIDE the school building.•

The Head Teacher’s decision on all matters of mobile phone protocol is final.•

MOBILE PHONES

We strongly advise that no valuables are brought to school; in line with all schools we do not have any arrangements for insurance of personal property. If you are anxious about such matters you are advised to contact your own insurance company.

Please note that students DO NOT have lockers in which they can leave coats, bags etc. We strongly advise that money is kept on their person and not left unattended in bags.

ATTENDANCEOur aim is for 100% attendance by all of our students, however we do realise that there may be times when your child is ill and unable to attend. We ask that on the first morning of absence you contact Lower School (Tel: 01204 333366), so that we can avoid a “truancy call” being automatically placed to your home number.

Please try to arrange routine check-ups, dentist appointments etc outside of school hours. Medical appointments, unfortunately do affect your child’s attendance as they count as an absence.

We strongly advise AGAINST taking holidays during term time. Any time off can seriously affect the progress of your child. Please note that any leave of absence in Year 7 MUST be requested via a letter to the Head of Lower School. A form will then be issued for completion to be returned to school. The request will then be considered.

Schools can only authorise a MAXIMUM of 10 days absence in any one year. Any request beyond this will be treated as an unauthorised absence.

Subject teacher detentions may range from 5 - 10 minutes at break or lunchtime to 45 minutes after school. Department/Faculty Detentions for more serious misdemeanours may be up to 45 minutes after school. School Detentions may be up to one hour after school for misdemeanours that stop just short of internal exclusion from school. Parents will be informed of this detention by letter.

All detentions are recorded in the planner and must be acknowledged by a signature from parents. Any after school detention will have at least a 24 hour notice period. If your child chooses to smoke, be with people who are smoking, chew gum, eat in classrooms or on corridors or drop litter, they are choosing a school detention.

Please note that any detention is not given lightly and we expect the full backing of parents in ensuring that the detention is completed.

Any minor ailment will be assessed by a staff first aider and the student returned to class after the appropriate treatment. If during the school time a student is taken ill, we will contact parents and ask that they are collected.

In an emergency, if necessary an ambulance will be called. Please note that we do not have any qualified medical staff or a school nurse on site.

A new ‘Data Collection Sheet’ will be issued in Spetember and we ask that it is returned the following day. School must be informed of any changes to contact details, mobile phone numbers, email addresses etc. If you have a call blocking facility on your home phone number please ensure the school number is one of the numbers that is accepted. We do have a text messaging service to keep you updated on upcoming school events so please ensure we have current mobile numbers.

All staff are happy to discuss with you your child’s progress or any problems that they may be having. Please remember that most members of staff have a heavy teaching commitment and if you telephone school it is unlikely that you will be able to speak to a specific member of staff at that time. However, if you leave a message the member of staff will get back to you as soon as possible. Similarly, please do not just turn up at school and expect to see a member of staff immediately. Don’t forget that there is no guarantee that the person you require will even be at Lower School as most staff teach on both sites.

BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNINGAs in all schools we believe that good discipline is the basis to effective learning. We will not tolerate poor behaviour and the behaviour of individual students cannot be allowed to affect the learning of others.

We strongly believe that:

All students have the right to learn• Everybody has the right to feel and be safe• Everybody has the right to dignity and personal respect• Everybody has a responsibilty to ensure that we can all enjoy our rights•

The school operates a number of sanctions according to the seriousness of the incident. These may include loss of privileges, detention or in extreme circumstances, to be educated in isolation or excluded.

STUDENT PLANNERAll students in the school are issued with a Student Planner in which to record all learning tasks that are set and the date when the work is due in. Parents/Carers are asked to check the diary on a weekly basis and sign at the end of the week to show that they have checked that the work has been completed.

The planner is an ideal means of communication between home and school.

As well as recording Home Learning, the planner is also used to record credits and detentions. All students MUST have their planner with them in all lessons. We would ecourage you to spend time going through the planner with you child.

In October 2004 the Pathway Centre at Lower School opened. Part of this new build included the refurbishment of the Children’s section of Horwich Public Library, which is situated opposite Lower School. As a result, our small Lower School library along with that of Lord Street Primary School, was incorporated into the new public library build. This means that our students are automatically members of the public library and have access to far more resources than previously was the case. All our students visit the library on a regular basis as part of their English curriculum.

Again as part of the new build, the Lower School ICT suite was doubled in size and now contains 50 fully internet accessible computers. Every student is issued with an email address as well as having designated ICT lessons. In addition, most subjects include ICT sessions within their programmes of study. All websites that are accessible to students are fully filtered by both the Local Authority and the school.

As part of the Year 7 Technology Course, the students will study Food Technology, Resistant Materials, Graphics and Textiles. It is expected that parents will provide ingredients for all food made by the students during their Food Technology lessons and in Textiles, pay 50p towards the cost of all materials used.

A plain white cotton apron is compulsory for Technology lessons.

CONSEQUENCES:

If your child does not comply with all parts of the uniform regulations, he/she will be given the chance to ‘get it right’. Failing that your child will be choosing to work in isolation or if this non-compliance persists your child is likely to be sent home.

In case of jewellery, caps, hooded tops, misuse of mobile phones, MP3 players etc. these will be confiscated and held in school until a letter from the parent/guardian is taken to the main office requesting the return of the item. However, parents/guardians of persitent offenders will be asked to collect the offending item in person.

Each individual student must accept responsibility for their own personal possesions and equipment whilst on the school site. Students should avoid bringing valuable items into school. However, where this is unavoidable, it is strongly recommended that they ask an appropriate member of staff whether it is possible to lock the item away.

PHYSICAL EDUCATIONOur PE department achieves success in all sporting areas. We have high expectations that our new students will become involved at various levels. All PE is done off site, either at the Upper School site or at Horwich Leisure Centre. Students must make their own way directly to Upper School where registration will take place, students MUST NOT report to Lower School. The students will then be transferred to Lower School by bus, during break time. All students are expected to take part and are expected to have the appropriate kit as per the guide lines.

All students are required to participate in each lesson. If an individual has an injury or ailment that prevents active participation, parents/carers are to complete an excuse note on Pages 196-197 in this planner. The student is also required to bring an appropriate PE kit as they will be involved in the lesson in some non-active manner.13

BREAK AND LUNCHTIMEAt break time the “Breakfast Bar” is open when items such as toast, crumpets, bacon baps, sausage baps, biscuits, fruit and drinks may be purchased. Please note that this is only available 3 days a week and does not operate on the days that the students have PE.

At lunch time the school operates a system of dinner sittings, all forms on a four week rota basis, have a turn at being on each of the four sittings. The canteen is operated on a cashless fixed price menu basis. We have a large variety of healthy eating options at lunch time, (chips are now served a MAXIMUM of once every 3 weeks!) and there is always a vegetarian option available. A £2.15 “Meal Deal”, where the students get a main course, sweet and a drink. There is also a pasta pot with biscuit and drink available each day for £1.60.

Should you prefer your son/daughter to bring their own packed lunch, there are arrangements for this. Please do not send drinks in a glass bottle or cans of fizzy drinks.

WE DO NOT ALLOW STUDENTS OFF SITE AT EITHER BREAK OR LUNCHTIME TO VISIT SHOPS IN THE TOWN CENTRE.

Although there are no “special school buses” that operate in the morning we do have 2 school only buses that leave Lower School at the end of the day. There are:

The 125 which runs from Bolton via Doffcocker runs from Horwich Public Hall every 10 minutes.

We insist that the students on our school buses behave in a way that will bring credit to themselves and the school. Any student who is found to be guilty of misbehaviour or vandalism on the buses will be banned from using the service. The bus companies will report any act of vandalism to the police and will issue a bill of repair to the parents.
