Year 7 & 8 AssemblyA thought provoking and hard-hitting presentation for Year 7 & 8 pupils lasting 30 minutes, talking about the importance of Road Safety awareness. The presentation consists of facts and statistics related to casualties in three age bands, 11-13, 14-16 and 17-19 with graphs showing the increase in numbers of injuries the older they get and also the change in the modes of transport in which the accidents occur. Statistics are then given for 12-16 year old injuries in Hampshire and broken down into Cycle casualties, Car passenger casualties and Pedestrian casualties.

Cycle SafetyAn interactive demonstration is given showing the importance of wearing a cycle helmet and also a powerful video from Olympic rower James Cracknell after he was knocked off his bike and explains how grateful he is for wearing a cycle helmet. The importance of being visible and bright is then discussed to make sure that cyclists are doing all they can to make sure motorists can see them and a video is shown to help get this message across too.

Car Passenger SafetyThe importance of seatbelt wearing is then explained for students to make them realise how important it is to always wear theirs, but also for this message to be taken away and given to family and friends if they have been known to travel without their seatbelt on or not correctly worn.

Pedestrian SafetyAnother interactive demonstration is shown to enable the audience to visualise stopping distances for vehicles, even at slow speeds, to make them realise how long it takes a vehicle to stop, with an explanation given about thinking and braking distances, with a follow up video explaining that traffic is the biggest single killer of 12-16 year olds. Distractions at the roadside are another factor in young pedestrian casualties, with examples given and a final video is shown.

Questions are then answered at the end and the students are wished a safe journey and told to be aware of the dangers whenever they are on the road or close by.
