Year 5Parent Information Meeting
WELCOME

Morning Routines• The gates to the school are open at 8.30am every
morning.
• Only children who are monitors are allowed to enter the classrooms before registration e.g chair monitors.
• Children should stay out in the playground before school with their coats and bags.
• Late children must report to the office.
Afternoon Routines
• After School Club children go directly to the cabin from the classroom.
• Children attending clubs go directly to the meeting point for their clubs.
• All year 5 children exit the school by the gate at the far side of the school.
• It is important that we know who is authorised to collect your children from school.
• Children in year 5 are becoming more independent and some walk all (or part of the way) home. We are quite happy about this, but do need a permission letter to this effect.
Mobile Phones
• We are able to keep mobile phones safe in our lockable cabinets, so children should put them in the locker at the beginning of the school day and we will return them at the end.
• Children should not keep mobile phones on during the day, neither in their bags, trays nor pockets.
Necessary equipment
• Pencil case – blue handwriting pen, pencil, rubber, sharpener.
• Coloured pencils.
• Felt pens are occasionally used, but not regularly in books, as they ‘go through’ the paper.
• We always have spares available.
Necessary equipment
• Water bottle, with fresh water daily.• Coat - Essential.• PE kit.
PE is on Tuesday and Thursday. Children are not allowed to do PE wearing earrings.
Outdoor trainers (in a named carrier bag) for the field.
Non attendance from PE must be accompanied by a note.
Mid-morning snacks
• Fruit or vegetables or cheese.
• Cereal bars / oatcakes / dippers / biscuits must be kept for lunchtime.
Meeting Teachers
• Should you have any worries or concerns. please let your child’s class teacher know:
• Write a brief note in your child’s planner.• Catch us before lessons or at the end of
the day.• Make an appointment via the school office.

• Parents evenings:
Wednesday 21st October – late appointments.
Thursday 22nd October – early appointments.
• Book an appointment with your class teacher by signing up on the sheets outside (KS1) or calling the office with availability so that they can book for you.
Home learning• Reading - Please encourage your child to read a
wide variety of genres in year 5, at least three evenings per week (to be noted in diaries by the children).
• Spelling – We have 4 SPAG sessions per week. Your child will know which spellings they are learning (see list in planner) and they will be displayed in the classroom.
• Writing - Tasks should be presented neatly in blue handwriting pen to the same standard as in school.
• Maths – Home learning will be linked to the work covered in class.
• Theme – Occasionally science, art, history or geography tasks may be set
Home learning
We will always set aside time on a Thursday morning to go over the home learning tasks so that the children understand what to do.
Home Learning Club is on a Friday lunch.
If children do not complete their home learning they will have to stay in for 15 minutes on Monday lunch time to do the tasks and attend home learning club the following Friday.
Teaching & Learning
• English and Maths are taught every morning.
• Broader curriculum subjects are taught in the afternoon and cross curricular links are stressed where possible.
• A theme based curriculum which builds on skills and values.
Curriculum 2014 - 2015• Carefully mapped our existing theme based
curriculum to meet new NC requirements – whole curriculum overview on website.
• Statutory testing on the old NC will continue until May 2016.
Spelling expectations• Changes to spelling expectations.• Banks of words children should know by the end
of yr3/yr4/yr5/y6.• Children will be taught to learn spelling patterns
and the statutory words.

NC requirements• KS1 name and locate the world’s 7
continents and five oceans. Name, locate and identify characteristics of the four countries and capital cities of the UK and its surrounding areas
• KS2 Locate the world’s countries, concentrating on their environmental regions, key physical features and human characteristics and major cities

KS1 - Each class will have a
news book which children will take home weekly which will focus on events in the UK. They will then have the opportunity to discuss their news event and pin point on a map the location (copy of world map and map of British Isles on display in classroom and use of digi-map). Regular opportunities for children to rehearse locational knowledge will be built into every unit of work throughout the keystage.

They will then have the opportunity to discuss their news event and pin point on a map the location. Regular opportunities for children to rehearse locational knowledge – naming and locating countries of the UK and the world, geographical regions, human and physical features including hills, mountains cities, rivers, key top geographical features and land use patterns and understand how some of these aspects have changed over time to be built into every unit of work.
Teaching & Learning
• Assessment for Learning (AfL) is used throughout the school to help children become more independent learners and to help them understand their learning journey.

Sayers Croft
• Year 5 go on a 3 day (2 night) residential trip to Sayers Croft in Ewhurst where they take part in a range of indoor and outdoor activities as part of their PSHE, Georgraphy and PE education.
• There will be a presentation in the New Year outlining the trip in more detail.
Bikeability• The Bikeability course level one will be in
the Spring or Summer Term.
