For the next few weeks, our learning will have a different focus each week.
There will be no new mathematical concepts taught, instead you will be consolidating and broadening your
understanding and applying your knowledge to different mathematical situations. There will be a variety of
fluency, problem solving and reasoning tasks. All content will be based upon the curriculum that we have
covered so far in Year 4.
We will aim for there to be different levels of challenge throughout the tasks – you should attempt to do as
much as you can.

We are learning to apply and consolidate knowledge of fractions
• recognise and show, using diagrams, families of common equivalent fractions
• solve problems involving increasingly harder fractions to calculate quantities, and fractions to divide quantities, including non-unit fractions where the answer
is a whole number
• add and subtract fractions with the same denominator
• compare fractions with different denominators
There are also 2Dos to complete on Purple Mash this week which match these objectives. These will go live on Monday and close on Friday.

Friday 3rd July 2020Friday fun fraction trail
Watch today’s video (click here to access the FOJS YouTube channel) for answers to
yesterday’s task followed by today’s Fluent in Five.
Today’s lesson is dependent on being able to watch today’s video. It involves some
clips of video recorded in school followed by some fractions questions to answer after
watching (e.g. what fraction of the colouring pencils were red?). If you cannot
access the video, perhaps you could create a fraction trail of your own at home!

Watch the fraction trail video carefully and answer the following questions. Remember to simplify the fractions where
possible. Good luck!
1) What fraction of the Year 3 lockers by the green door do not have a superhero nametag?
2) What fraction of the office letter trays are grey?
3) What fraction of the office ladies are wearing glasses?
4) What fraction of the lighthouse is red?
5) What fraction of the Year 5 concept question by the upper school playground uses vowels?
6) What fraction of chairs in Valentina class are green?
7) What fraction of the hoops outside the PE cupboard are blue?
8) What fraction of the shelf boxes in the corridor of curiosity are in line with the radiator?

Optional extra:
Using the photo of the table at the end of the trail, can you create your own fractions questions about the different
objects? Once you have created some, upload them onto your class’s blog for others to solve.
