GRAND KNIGHT'S REPORT

Brother Knights,

As the new GK of Ascension Council for the Fraternal Year 2015-2016 I know I have some big shoes to fill to make sure our council has a successful year. I know I cannot do this alone, but with the help of Program Director DGK Jack Kapp and the Service Program Chairs together we can make it happen. PGK Pat McKeown has supplied me with files, notes and suggestions to make my life as GK a lot easier. Thank you very much Pat. I also want to thank all the PGK’s who have offered to help me get through this year. I will take you up on your offers.

To my fellow officers thank you for agreeing to serve with me. I will need your advice and support throughout the year.

To all my Brother Knights I need your help and ask you to consider helping at least one event we sponsor this year. We need all the Knights of this Council to pitch in to help make all our events successful.

Our Worthy State Deputy’s motto for this year is: Living a Fraternal Journey, Live, Know, Share our Faith. The State Deputy is challenging all of us to make a commitment to learn more about our religion, its faith, principles and laws and if we do this we can continue to make our council, parish and community a better place to live, grow and raise our Knights of Columbus families. I urge each of you to take the State Deputy’s challenge.

Recently, our Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William E. Lori made the following comment in his Homily at St. Mary’s Church, the Order’s birthplace. His comments were addressed to State Deputies, but I believe it can apply to all Knights. He said and I quote “Venerable Father Michael McGivney is urging you not just to be a practicing Catholic, but an avidly practicing Catholic who takes his faith to heart and lives it daily.” End of quote. During this Fraternal Year Ascension Council will sponsor a Catholic Faith Educational Event, one that will teach us more about our Catholic Faith.

We have at least two (2) big challenges as a council this year:

1. Fundraising to provide our usual charities with the funds they need along with the huge challenge to help

Fr. Devan complete the water project for the small rural village of Melapatti in India.

2. Recruiting-We can make Star Council, if all members do all they can to recruit new members. Each of us must know someone who is not a Knight. I have placed the new Form 100’s in the Knights box located outside the Parish Office. Please help yourself to as many as you need.

One final note concerning the Knights of Columbus Insurance: As the new fraternal year starts off we need to spend a few minutes confirming where we are and where we are taking the council. Thom Harrington, Our Field Agent, is a resource to help with growing the council but it is our goal and our responsibility. To that end, I ask you to meet with Thom when he calls to discuss the council goals and how he can help you as you help the council.

I trust that with your prayers the Lord God will watch over our council this year and help each of us to practice the principles of the Knights of Columbus.

We should be sure all is convenient for the Deacons and family.

PGK Pat McKeown presents a check to to Angela Clark for Best Choice Ultrasound during a

pause at the July business meeting.

VDOT Cleanup On June 13th Ascension Council conducted a VDOT activity and our crew of seven plus one of our very supportive wives collected seven bags of refuse. The area we are responsible for covers all of Token Forest Drive and Dell Boulevard from Hoadly Road to Nottingdale Drive. We wish to thank all of the following Knights and wives for all of their hard work; PGK Bryan Roberts, Richard Rocha, Alex Blair, John Calvert, Jack Kapp, PGK Jerry and Giulia Michonski and PGK Tom Zum Brunnen. We assembled in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church parking lot at 8 AM and completed the activity at 9:30 PM. Then Alex, Jerry, Giulia, Tom and Dixie Zum Brunnen assembled at the IHOP Restaurant on Hoadly Road for a good breakfast and some enjoyable socializing.

The next VDOT Road Cleanup is scheduled for Saturday September 19th at 8 AM. After the cleanup, the group typically has brunch at the nearby IHOP. Contact PGK Tom Zum Brunnen for details.

Firewood Service Brother Eddie and PGK George Darnell are Happy. All the wood has been moved from George's back yard to Eddie's back yard. We left the big stuff for PGK Bill Miller & sons (Will and Camden) to move. Bill and sons took two trailer loads of big chunks to Eddie today-mission accomplished!

We would like to thank all the Knights of the Bull crew (including Ronnie Castro) that loaded and unloaded three (3) truck loads and three (3) trailer loads of wood, some of which took the younger Bulls to load. Bill Miller finished up today.

Saturday Rick Ontko was there with his truck and trailer, PGK Tom ZumBrunnen with his trailer, Ronnie Castro with his truck and Jim Etzel with his truck. PGK Mike Romero, PGK Bryan Roberts, PGK Rick Johnson and PGK George Darnell all chucked a lot of wood. Eddie was very appreciative and made sure everyone had all the water they needed.

There are no youth events scheduled in the next three months.

Family The Director’s objective for Family Activities is to involve the entire family in the activities of the Knights of Columbus, to strengthen family life, and to care for widows and children of deceased members.

Council Picnic PGK Tony Bado and his wife Molly hosted a wonderful end of the fraternal year picnic at their home on June 28th.

Our hosts bent over backwards to accommodate the council and that resulted in lots of good food and socializing.

Corn Hole The council will sponsor the annual Corn Hole tournament on Saturday, August 22nd starting at 3 PM. John Keast is chairman of this event.

Oktoberfest Our Oktoberfest Chair Brother Bob Richards will need lots of help (All Hands) to make this year’s Oktoberfest successful. Bob works very hard on this event so please consider filling one of the positions he needs to fill. Bob's plea for help follows:

I really need your help to support this year’s Oktoberfest event. September is just around the corner and we are beginning to plan for this year’s Oktoberfest. To make things more challenging I am travelling for work over the next few weeks and won’t be able to schedule a formal meeting until the end of August. I am also in the process of moving. My closing date is the day before the event UGHH!. If you have previously participated in the event you know how much fun it can be and if you haven’t please join us because you won’t be disappointed. The event is scheduled for Saturday, September 26th at 6 PM directly following Mass. There will be traditional food, beverages, music, dancing and games. This year the proceeds from the event will support both Father Devon’s Water Project and our parish. We are also looking for volunteers to sell tickets, decorate, cook and serve food and beverages and bake desserts.

In particular I need someone to:

Organize the home brewers;

Cook Rotkohl – we are planning to cook the

potato salad and rotkohl on Thursday

September 24th in the parish kitchen;

Update the menus and food ordering boards;

Lead advertising efforts;

FIELD AGENT Fathers Plan, Fathers Protect

From the beginning, the Knights of Columbus has been a family-first organization. Venerable Father McGivney

Page 6: Year 30 --- Number 2 August-September 2015 ...uknight.org/Councils/koc0815.pdf · One final note concerning the Knights of Columbus Insurance: As the new fraternal year starts off

Page 6

was striving to find Catholic men who could come together to protect and support the families in their communities who needed it most – including their own. Today, the mission remains the same. And, as we begin the new Fraternal Year, it’s a great time to evaluate how we’re doing.

As we begin Fraternal Year 2015-2016, the Knights of Columbus has more than $98 billion of life insurance in force, covering the lives of hundreds of thousands of our members and their families. Knights across North America continue to trust their Order to protect them and to see to it that their loved ones are well taken care of once they’re gone. And the numbers keep increasing. More and more members are preparing to leave behind legacies of protection for their loved ones.

But how are each of us doing on an individual level? How well protected are our families? Are we certain that the insurance that we have in place is enough to cover their needs? Is it enough to allow those left behind to remain in their homes, to attend college, to continue to live the lives they are accustomed to? Would you even know how to begin calculating and projecting those needs? There are a lot of moving pieces and parts that go into calculating just how much your life is worth in dollars & cents. You’re worth far more to your family than simply a number on a page, of course, but you do provide for them. And, if you’re no longer able to, you want to make sure that their lives are not further devastated by your absence.

These calculations and determinations are not ones that you need to make on your own. I can help you identify what you need to do in order to adequately protect your family. The Knights of Columbus provides members a comprehensive, complimentary needs analysis titled “Profiles & Forecaster,” a proven industry tool that helps you determine your needs. I will gladly perform this custom analysis for you and your family absolutely free. It’s a fraternal benefit that costs you nothing, but could tell you a lot. The Profiles & Forecaster analysis will help you identify surpluses and shortages, insurance and income replacement needs, final expenses, and more. Why would you turn down a free comprehensive analysis from one of the “World’s Most Ethical Companies?” Why would you pass up on a complete review from North America’s most highly rated life insurer?*

Helping your family to prepare for life without you is one of the most selfless actions you can make.

So, make a resolution for the new Fraternal Year to show your family how much they mean to you. Make an appointment with me for your custom analysis, and begin to build an insurance portfolio that will guarantee their protection after you’re gone.

*As of 6/23/14, rated A++, superior for financial strength by

A.M. Best. Designated a 2015 World’s Most Ethical Company by the Ethisphere Institue.

Only Having Insurance “Through Work” Doesn’t Work

Do you know anyone whose life or career has drastically changed during these years of economic turmoil? It’s very likely that someone in your immediate or extended family or group of friends is facing financial uncertainty. Maybe there’s a possibility that you (or your spouse) could lose your job or change employers.

Too many people rely on group term life insurance as their only safety net. Often, this insurance is an employee benefit provided at low or no cost. Having this coverage might convince someone that personally-owned life insurance is not necessary.

But only having “through work” insurance can leave you and your family vulnerable. Most group life insurance policies are limited in amount, normally tied to salary or some other benchmark. These numbers are often capped, and this cap may be dangerously low when compared to your family’s actual needs. In fact, a detailed needs analysis that evaluates your specific situation will likely show that any employer-provided coverage falls short.

In addition, the amount of group insurance offered is almost always reduced, sometimes dramatically, when you retire. You could one day find yourself without coverage, and if your health has changed (which it will as you age), you might also find yourself unable to secure individual protection. At the very least, it will definitely be more expensive.

While group life insurance can help, it does not replace the need for individually owned life insurance. I’ll be happy to meet with you and provide a no-cost needs analysis, so you’ll know exactly where you stand.

EDITOR’S CORNER

Welcome to our latest newsletter. Summer is over half over and in this issue we begin to look toward the many events in the Fall.

Our Facebook page is still active and is located at http://www.Facebook.com/council9285. There is new interest and excitement being generated – please visit the page and be part of the “buzz”!

We now have a new website on UKnight with both public and private (member password access) areas. You can reach it at AscensionCouncil9285.org. We will keep the most up to date calendar here. Also, once an event has a chair assigned, you can easily contact him from the website calendar to volunteer or to ask a question. The event chair then has the ability to setup a list of those volunteering and communicate with that group directly through the website.

Minutes from meetings will now be solely posted on our website with an email notification to all members when the minutes are posted.

The other capability that UKnight provides is the ability to send emails to all members. If you have an email to send to everyone in the council or specific subsets such as all 2nd Degree Knight, please send the email to our Grand Knight or Deputy Grand Knight who will then send it out from UKnight.

I would like all future newsletter inputs no later than the Saturday AFTER the special planning meeting for the month. For the October/November 2015 issue I will need articles by Saturday, September 26th. Please mark these dates on your calendar and plan ahead to meet these deadlines.
