Day 1

Reading

FOCUS: VISUALISING How do authors use language to help readers to visualise what is happening in the text? Authors choose words and phrases carefully. They include details and construct sentences to help to build a picture in the reader's mind of what the characters and settings look like, the action taking place, and the effects of the actions and events. As we read we see this in our minds like a movie. Task: Tap on this link https://youtu.be/6UpJDUrdylo to listen to part of a story being read. You might need to listen a few times, paying close attention to the details and clues in the text to help you to visualise. In your workbook or on a blank sheet of paper, use grey lead pencil to draw the picture that you have in your mind - what you visualised - by thinking about the language that the author used. Use coloured pencils to complete your drawing and don’t forget to include a title and today’s date on your work. Independent Reading: Students read their take home books and/or other ‘just right’ books that they may have at home. Active Learn is also available for use at home: ActiveLearn: Login (activelearnprimary.com.au)

Writing

FOCUS: NARRATIVES Daily Practise: Gentle Cindy: watch this short video to learn when Gs and Cs make their hard and soft sounds. Draw your own full page Gentle Cindy when you have finished watching the video (keep this for tomorrow’s daily practise - you will add to it). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kTEPzTRf3s Task: Using the sequencing pictures provided, retell the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. Make sure you think about your word choices, using phrases and sentences to help your audience visualise the characters, setting and events. It is preferable to write part of the story really well than to try to write the whole story without including much detail. This task is on Seesaw.

Maths

FOCUS: MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION Daily Practise: Place Value Puzzles - Can you fill in the numbers that are missing from the boxes? The boxes are arranged as they would be in a hundreds chart but with many blank spaces for you to solve (see attachment at the end of the planner). Task: Function Machines Watch the video explaining how to use function machines (this video is attached to the Seesaw task). After you have watched the video, complete the function machines worksheet at the end of the planner. Share your success with your teacher on Seesaw. Challenge: What is the number? The number has 5 digits. The ones digit is an even number that is bigger than 6 but smaller than 9. The ten thousands digit is the same as 2 x 4. The hundred digit is the same as 8 x 1. The tens digit is half of 10. The thousands digit is the same as 50 - 20 - 20 - 5.

BQT FOCUS: CRAZY COOKING! Task: Today we are learning to describe changes in materials when they are mixed together. Watch the Crazy Cooking video to assist with your task. Today Miss Shacklock will be creating some mixtures using simple ingredients you may have in your pantry. https://youtu.be/7tlFV2RnQXo After you watch the video, you might like to create the mixtures at home so you can describe the smell, along with the textures and colours of the mixtures. Complete the attached worksheet while watching the instructional video.

You might need to listen a few times, paying close attention to the details and clues in the text to help you to visualise. Use coloured pencils to draw the picture that was formed in your head, by noticing the language that the author used. Independent Reading: Students read their take home books and/or other ‘just right’ books that they may have at home. Active Learn is also available for use at home: ActiveLearn: Login (activelearnprimary.com.au)

Writing

FOCUS: NARRATIVES Daily Practise: Gentle Cindy. Think of five words that contain the gentle ‘c’ sound and record them around your picture of Gentle Cindy from yesterday. Do the same with 5 words with the gentle ‘g’ sound, e.g. city, giant. Task: Island Story Map - Take a close look at the Island map at the end of the planner and use the information on the map to tell your own story. Use the prompts surrounding the map to guide your thinking.

Task: Multiplication represented as groups. Complete the 2 worksheets below. Sheet 1 - Solve the multiplication problems by identifying how many groups of, and the multiplication problem. Sheet 2 - Complete the worksheet by drawing the groups to match the information given. Then write the matching equation. Upload an image of your completed worksheets to Seesaw for your teacher to correct. Challenge: What is the number? The number has 5 digits. The ten thousands digit is the same as the hundreds digit and it is an even number, which can be divided by 2 to make 3. The thousands digit is one digit bigger than 8. The ones digit is 12 divided by 4. The tens digit is double 4.

Health FOCUS: MINDFULNESS Feelings Craft Can I use my body to express how I am feeling? In life and art, people use their bodies to express how they are feeling all the time. Today we will create a collage using lines and colours to express a feeling.

Think about all the feelings you may have felt throughout the year (joy, excitement, annoyance, frustration, confusion) and how colours and lines can represent feelings. Eg: Cool colours generally represent sadness. Smooth lines for calm, zagged lines for frustration.

Using a pencil or black texta, create lines overlapping on your page. Don’t go too over the top because you are going to colour in each little section. See the black and white example on the left. Once you have your line drawing, using the colours that reflect your emotion, colour each section in, trying not to use the same colour next to each other.

Optional: Cut the letters out of a magazine to spell out some of the feelings you were hoping to convey in your artwork.

Writing

FOCUS: NARRATIVES Daily Practise: Please complete the dictation that has been assigned to you on Seesaw. You will need to write this in your workbook in your neatest handwriting. Please post a photo of your completed task on Seesaw. Task: Use your story mapping template that you completed yesterday to write your ‘journey’ story. Remember to include a bold beginning - make sure your readers have a good sense of where this story is taking place, what it’s like, who your main character is and what they are like. Take your time to describe the events in your story. Think about how you can help your reader to visualise what you have in your head. Make sure you include all the information your readers need to make sense of the story - don’t leave out important actions or information. Re-read your story 3 times when you have finished. 1st read - does your writing make sense? 2nd read - revise your work - can you add any details to make it better? 3rd read - do a final check of your punctuation and spelling We have included an example of a story map that has already been filled in with a basic outline for a story (it’s the one about Beasley from yesterday). You are welcome to use this one for your story instead of the one you wrote yesterday, if you would prefer.

Maths FOCUS: MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION Daily Practise: Multiplication Wheels - Multiply the numbers by the middle numbers. You can use counters, pencils or blocks to help you (see attachment at the end of the planner). Task: Using the worksheet at the end of the planner to write 2 multiplication equations that match each array, depending on whether you are counting the columns or the rows. Draw 4 of your own arrays and write the 2 matching equations. Make sure when drawing your arrays that you are very neat and that the rows and columns are in line. They should create a perfect square or a perfect rectangle! Challenge: My teacher decided to reward us with a pizza party at the end of the week. There are 21 people in my class, and each person is allowed 2 pieces of pizza. A pizza has 7 slices. How many pizzas does the teacher need to buy? Draw a picture to show your working out.

BQT

FOCUS: FUN FLUIDS EXPERIMENT! Miss Shacklock will be conducting these experiments at 12:30pm for all to watch! Task: Why do you think scientists might be interested in studying oil and water, such as studying oil spills or investigating how much detergent is necessary to clean an oily plate? Today we will be examining what happens when oil, water and detergent are mixed together. We will compare the substances when mixed together two at a time, and then when all are mixed together. Predict what you think will happen when each mixture is made. Record your predictions on the science sheet attached (Fun Fluids). After you have conducted your experiments, record your observations by drawing your mixture in the cup and writing words to describe each mixture. Answer this question - What did you learn about mixtures from this experiment? Once you have completed your worksheet, take a photo to show your teacher on Seesaw.
