Hello to all my lovely Year 2s. I hope you’re all okay; I’m missing you all lots! This pack has some more things to keep you busy. Please don’t worry if you’re still working through the first pack. This is just for when you’re ready to move on or if you want to try some new activities. The activities in this task are not intended to be printed off. They are all things that you can do online or write into your home learning books. In this pack you will find some English, Maths, PSHE, Science, History and Art. Please make sure you are doing at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day and spend at least 10 minutes a day reading as well as doing things that you enjoy and spending quality time with your family. You might be using this time to learn a new skill or to practise some things that you enjoy. I look forward to hearing about it all when we see each other again!

You should be trying to do these things each day:

- Reading (school books or anything!) - Practising times tables (2, 3, 5, 10) - Daily arithmetic questions (see further on in the pack)

Maths https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/ This website has a series of lessons covering Year 2 objectives. Type in the link, select Year 2, start at Week 1 Lesson 1 and then work your way through the lessons. For each lesson, there is a video tutorial and then activities to complete. Some of these lessons will be recapping what we have already done in school and some might be new. Just have a go and try your best! There will be new objectives added to this website each week. These are some other website/apps you might want to have a look at: Times Tables Rockstars – (app) - Let me know if you don’t know your login details. Top Marks – https://www.topmarks.co.uk/Search.aspx?Subject=16&AgeGroup=2 (or app) - This has a ‘Hit the Button’ game on that we play in school The Maths Factor – https://www.themathsfactor.com - This is Carol Vordeman’s website and is offering a free subscription for home learning. Daily Arithmetic – I have put together some daily arithmetic questions. We usually do this on a morning as the children arrive in school so it could be something they could do each morning to get started. Below you will also find some addition and subtraction ‘lessons’. I have given examples and modelled how to work them out and then some questions to answer.

Column Addition

When adding 2 or 3-digit numbers, the best way is to use the column method. We have looked at this before in school but the children may need a little refresher. Below are some examples of how to set it out. Remember to always start with the units/ones. No need to print this sheet – children can copy out the number sentence into their books or on paper and then use the column method underneath to solve it.

Now have a go at these:

1. 64 + 32 = 2. 38 + 21 = 3. 41 + 54 = 4. 27 + 41 = 5. 126 + 241 =

If the children are confident with this, they could have a go at the next step. We haven’t looked at this in class yet so the children would need to be shown how to do it.

6. 351 + 243 = 7. 513 + 351 = 8. 171 + 26 = 9. 352 + 34 = 10. 441 + 23 =

1. 29 + 32 = 2. 45 + 25 = 3. 67 + 25 = 4. 53 + 28 = 5. 128 + 145 = 6. 251 + 139 =

Column Subtraction

As with addition, when subtracting 2 and 3-digit numbers, the best way is to use the column method. We have looked at this before in school but the children may need a little refresher. Below are some examples of how to set it out. Remember to always start with the units/ones. No need to print this sheet – children can copy out the number sentence into their books or on paper and then use the column method underneath to solve it.

Now have a go at these:

1. 63 - 22 = 2. 39 - 21 = 3. 47 - 24 = 4. 97 - 41 = 5. 326 - 211 =

If the children are confident with this, they could have a go at the next step. We haven’t looked at this in class yet so the children would need to be shown how to do it.

11. 353 - 243 = 12. 583 - 351 = 13. 178 - 26 = 14. 356 - 34 = 15. 445 - 23 =

1. 53 - 36 = 2. 44 - 25 = 3. 62 - 25 = 4. 53 - 28 = 5. 91 – 34 = 6. 60 – 41 =

English – Handwriting - These do not need to be printed. The children can just copy the formation into their own books. Once they have practiced the individual letters, the children can practise writing the words in their books using the correct formation. Wherever possible, please ensure that the children are practising on lined paper to encourage them to start on the line each time.

Reading – Please ensure you are reading your school books or books from home each day and recording in your reading record. There are also some reading comprehensions attached to this pack. Please answer the questions in your book. Writing – Please see History and Science projects for extended writing opportunities.

Verbs Write down all of the verbs (doing words) in this picture (e.g. lifting, shopping, waiting). Then put each verb into a sentence and add an adverb. Try to change where the adverb is in each sentence. The lady was waiting patiently at the bus stop. The man was cautiously crossing the road.

Commas Use the same picture to make a list of what you can see using commas to separate each item: I can see people shopping, people on the bus, a man digging and a girl on a bike.

Apostrophes Think about the members of your family and use an apostrophe to write down something that belong to them. E.g. Mum’s scarf. Then look at objects in your house to try and use apostrophes for possession of objects. E.g. the pen’s lid, the teddy bear’s shoes.

Science Research Project - Plants Key Questions – How do seeds and bulbs grow into plants? What do plants need in order to grow and stay healthy?

Suggested Activities – *Label the main parts of a plant (real or picture) *Dissect a plant (that is not planted in the ground) *Plant your own seeds and watch them grow *Plant different seeds and investigate how they grow best – put one in sunlight with regular water, one in sunlight with no water, one in darkness with water, one in darkness with no water. Which one will grow the best? *Take pictures of the plants throughout *Put food colouring into some water with a flower – what happens to the flower? *Write instructions for how to plant a seed

Art – Salt Dough Our Art topic this half term was to use salt dough to make a plant/flower. I know some ingredients are difficult to get at the minute but I have included a simple salt dough recipe if you are able to make some. Use the salt dough to create the key parts of a plant (following your research) and then once it has dried, paint and label the plant/flower.

Making salt dough is a really fun and easy activity for kids and the chances are you will have all of the ingredients in the cupboard ready to go on a rainy day. Children will love using their imaginations to create all sorts of exciting objects (although simple shapes do seem to work best) and hours of fun painting their creations, but do take care to remind little ones that the salt dough is not edible.

Makes 1 ball Prep 10 minutes Cook 3 hours

• 1 cupful of plain flour (about 250g) • half a cupful of table salt (about 125g)

• half a cupful of water (about 125ml)

Method

1. Preheat the oven to its lowest setting and line a baking sheet with baking parchment. 2. Mix the flour and salt in a large bowl. Add the water and stir until it comes together into a ball. 3. Transfer the dough to a floured work surface and shape into your chosen model. You can roll it out and cut out shapes, numbers or letters using biscuit cutters, or make any kind of model you can think of. We made some fruit and veg shapes plus cupcakes for a teddy bear’s picnic.

4. Put your finished items on the lined baking sheet and bake for 3 hrs or until solid.

5. Leave to cool and then paint.

PSHE ‘I can recognise that I belong to a variety of communities locally, nationally and globally.’ Think about the communities you belong to.

- Family - School - Village - Sports group

Think about what is important about these communities. Why are they special? Design a logo for one of these communities including a symbol of why it is special. Look at our school logo for ideas.

Think about somebody in your local community who might be lonely during this time. You could make them a card or a picture to cheer them up. Think and talk about the community spirit that has been shown during the Coronavirus pandemic. Create a poster to show how people have worked as a community to support each other. Maybe you could display this in your window?

Our school logo The cross in the centre because we are a Catholic school and follow Gospel values. The children around the cross, holding hands to show that we are all friends and support each other.
