Year 12
Subject Reading Lists
Sixth Form Literacy Initiative: Wider Reading
Here at The Redhill Academy we strongly believe in encouraging students to be the best they can possibly be and realise their
full potential. This aim is central to the way we prepare year 12 and 13 students for the next phase of their lives whether this is
university, apprenticeship or employment.
Therefore, we are intensifying our focus on the issue of ‘wider reading’ which emphasises the need for students to inde-
pendently research and ‘read around’ their subjects. In an increasingly competitive post-18 world students must seek to utilise
every opportunity to extend their knowledge beyond the boundaries of the classroom. Wider reading will have enormous bene-
fits for all students:
Improved Literacy
If you become accustomed to seeing high quality literacy, you de-mystify its elements and naturally progress.
Vocabulary
A student who reads is one who can deploy a greater range of vocabulary both in written and oral work. Improved vocabulary
boosts the ability of students to communicate effectively which is a highly prized quality both in Higher Education and employ-
ment.
Understanding
More reading means more knowledge! More knowledge means a better chance of excelling in your chosen subjects. It really is
that simple!
Well-roundedness
Reading around a subject makes you think beyond the immediate environment of the classroom and the exam paper. It will
make you more of a lover of a subject rather than a student trained to pass an exam. This really is the road to happiness and
ultimately success at a high level.
Demonstration of independence
The willingness to go beyond the syllabus physically demonstrates both commitment and a desire to be independent. These
skills are essential when tackling life beyond the Sixth Form and must be developed!
Future planning
Universities call the willingness to develop an academic interest outside of lessons ‘super-curricular’ rather than ‘extra-
curricular’. In a world where high grades are becoming more common, institutions are seeking ways of recruiting students who
stand out from the crowd. Wider reading really is a win win!
What should you do now?
Individual reading lists for each subject will be issued as part of the Induction process. Students can then use this to kick-start
their A Level/Level 3 studies over the summer. From the Autumn Term onwards, teaching staff will then utilise the list as appro-
priate. A document containing all the reading lists will also be readily available in the Sixth Form Centre.
It should be stressed that these lists are in no way exhaustive, students should seek to branch out from these suggestions in
order to follow their own interests and passions.
Happy reading!
