EVALUATIONAll of these ideas are part of my hobbies, so I have decided to create a computer table with the computer, screen and all peripherals hidden away. I have chosen this idea because it is a mixture of my hobbies and interests. Also my bedroom is very small and I find it hard to place my text books on my table without moving my keyboard and other things off the table. To me this is the answer to maximizing the use of the table. The concept is very unique and from what I can gather from research, has never been performed before. Because of the uniqueness of this project, I believe that people will like it and find it enjoying.

I am building this desk because of numerous purposes: To save physical space in dwellings – no need for 2 desks To act as a thief deterrent – computer and monitor are hidden To save clutter on desks – computer is in a drawer and keyboard stores in

drawer. Can be adapted to 3 different widths – modular design To be a new product on the market To be an innovative product

My genuine need for this product is to build a desk which can save physical space in dwellings, it will do this by having 2 specific purposes: to be used as a computer desk or a writing desk. Through visiting friends and relatives homes, I have seen that their desks where their computer and keyboard are kept are much cluttered and there is no space for them to fit an A3 size sheet of paper. An A3 sheet of paper is roughly the size of an open book. The way my friends and relatives have solved it was to buy another desk or a wall desk which nothing is kept on. My design is made so that people don’t have to worry about buying another desk. My product comes with a 22 inch LCD screen in it so there is no need for a new screen to be bought, it can be adapted to retrofit existing computer cases, or custom computer cases. The monitor for the computer is built into the middle module. Inside the middle module; the monitor is fitted to an electrical linear actuator with a stroke size of 18 inches. With the push of a button the monitor will slide up or down.

DESIGN BRIEFTo design and construct a multi-purpose computer desk which meets the needs of the target market and evaluating criteria.

MOTIVATION FOR PROJECT AND TARGET MARKETMy main motivation for this project is to design and produce a project which is innovative and interlaces with my interests and hobbies. What also motivates me for this project is:

To fabricate my own computer case To build another computer To build an unique table

B.O.S. No. 17705911 http://www.stealthdesk.com5

Page 6: Year 12 major design projectmembers.optuszoo.com.au/stealthdesk/MDP.doc · Web viewDrill bits are still used, but they are used with a CAM compatible machine Drill bits are needed

My current interests include: Computer maintenance, repairs, networking Computer building Music Technical drawing / CAD programs Computer gaming Graphic design

My current hobbies include: Computer maintenance, repairs, networking Computer building Computer gaming Using Graphic design programs – in particular Adobe Photoshop, Cinema 4D Using CAD programs – in particular ProDesktop, SolidWorks, Sketchup Building scale models Listening, composing music Building projects out of wood Watching T.V.

I don’t have a lot of experience with wood but I would consider woodworking as one of my skills. I help my Father around the house a lot, doing home maintenance. Last year I helped him build a desk which runs across one of the walls in our study room. By helping him with this; I gained proficient experience in the areas of:

Using various power tools; drop saw, jigsaw, planer, and belt sander. Marking and measuring timber to length What type of nails / screws to use How to use different joints between 2 pieces of timber What types of timber to use for a project and why to use it?

I have a special interest in computers. I am able to go and buy parts for a computer and build the computer, by connecting the parts and wiring, and then installing an Operating system. In the last 2 years I have been paid by friends to build them a computer, in those 2 years I built 5 computers, all of them to date have had no problems. One is being used as a Home Theatre Personal Computer; it is connected to a 42 inch LCD screen and is used daily to watch digital TV and movies. Another one is my own computer, which is the one used for this project, it has been built for my needs, it features 2 Gb of RAM and 1.2Tb of HDD space set in a SATA RAID, as well as 2 graphic cards connected via SLI. The other 3 computers were built for low tendency usage eg. Hardly any gaming; strictly emailing and word processing. I will be fabricating my own computer case and trialling my own method of passive cooling in the case.

NEED / PURPOSEI am building this desk because of numerous purposes:

To save physical space in dwellings – no need for 2 desks To act as a thief deterrent – computer and monitor are hidden To save clutter on desks – computer in drawer and keyboard stores in drawer. Can be adapted to different widths – modular design To be a new product on the market

To be an innovative product

My genuine need for this product is to build a desk which can save physical space in dwellings, it will do this by having 2 specific purposes: to be used as a computer desk or a writing desk. Through visiting friends and relatives homes, I have seen that their desks where their computer and keyboard are kept are much cluttered and there is no space for them to fit an A3 size sheet of paper. An A3 sheet of paper is roughly the size of an open book. The way my friends and relatives have solved it was to buy another desk or a wall desk which nothing is kept on. My design is made so that people don’t have to worry about buying another desk. My product comes with a computer in it so there is no need for a new computer to be bought, it can also be adapted to retrofit existing computer cases. The monitor for the computer is built into the middle module. Inside the middle module; the monitor is fitted to an electrical linear actuator with a stroke size of 18 inches. With the push of a button the monitor will slide up or down.

TARGET MARKETThe target market is very big as it applies to all home owners and/or people who occupy dwellings. I think a majority of the target market are parents looking for a new desk and/or computer for their sons and daughters when they are entering high school. There is an existing need in the house I live in; my desk is always cluttered when doing homework. This is due to the keyboard and monitor on top of the desk and then me trying to put my text book and exercise book on top to write. That is why I am making this desk more towards the multi-purpose side, so that people with the same problem as me can save money and not worry about clearing the desk if they feel like reading or writing. Another feature which draws attention is the ability to store away the monitor and computer, if the house was being burgled, it would not be very clear to the offenders that the ‘writing’ desk is actually worth somewhere close to $1500.

I believe it is possible that my desk can become a commercial product due to the increasing trend of products that make life simpler. If this was to be sold, the price would be able to be adjusted for variables for factors such as, the thickness of the timber, to come with a computer or not, the amount of modules and the design on the glass. By the price being flexible it would be able to reach a further target market for those who can’t afford the table with all the features.

IDEAS GENERATIONMy ideas came to mind for this table came to mind because I wanted to create a project which solved a current problem but also tied in with my interests and hobbies. Originally I wanted to make a computer program for musicians but realised that it would be quite hard as I had no prior use with electronics that involved artificial intelligence. I came up with the idea that I would make a table, but not just any table one which would be futuristic and seem impossible.

DEGREE OF DIFFERENCEMy design is different because it functions as a multi-purpose desk. The computer and LCD monitor are hidden inside the table. The table is a modular design which means if need be the design can be altered to have one, two or no set of drawers. From what I have been able to research, there is no current solution like mine. A few companies make a cabinet so that you can place the computer and its components in the cabinet so that when you close the doors the computer is hidden.Another similar solution is the following fold-out bed with a desk that folds out from the underside. These two solutions have been analysed in the following section.

CONSIDERATION OF DESIGN FACTORS RELEVANT TO THE MAJOR DESIGN

PROJECT

B.O.S. No. 17705911 http://www.stealthdesk.com25

Page 26: Year 12 major design projectmembers.optuszoo.com.au/stealthdesk/MDP.doc · Web viewDrill bits are still used, but they are used with a CAM compatible machine Drill bits are needed

My major design project is a computer desk constructed from modules. There will be 3 modules: 2 x modules, each with 3 drawers.

1 x module with the actuator and monitor inside itMy desk is not only unique because of the modules but also because it will have a computer hidden inside one of the drawers so that it can be serviced or upgraded as needed. The monitor for the computer will be mounted into the middle module with an electric actuator so that at the push of a button; the monitor will rise and lower from the module.

FACTORS AFFECTING DESIGN

Appropriateness of the design solution Why is this design solution the best? This design is best for me because it adheres to the wanted functions which are; accessibility for the computer to be upgraded, for the LCD monitor to raise and lower out of the table and for the short-term cost to be as low as possible.

NeedsSomething that is a requirement or is wanted. My MDP meets the following needs:

To save physical space in dwellings To act as a thief deterrent To save clutter on desks Can be adapted to 3 different widths To be a new product on the market To be an innovative product

FunctionAn activity or role assigned to somebody or something. The function of the desk is important to the success of my project because if the desk doesn’t function; why would someone buy it?For my MDP to function:

Actuator works Source of power works Computer can boot off Operating System Computer can be upgraded Drawers slide smooth Desk is stable Modular system works Modules connect flush Top of desk is flush Desk is level.

B.O.S. No. 17705911 http://www.stealthdesk.com26

Page 27: Year 12 major design projectmembers.optuszoo.com.au/stealthdesk/MDP.doc · Web viewDrill bits are still used, but they are used with a CAM compatible machine Drill bits are needed

AestheticsHow something looks, especially when considered in terms of how pleasing it is. How my finished desk looks is very important to the success of my design because it is what makes my desk so different from others. If my desk is aesthetically pleasing, it will draw people’s attention and make them look at the other features and functions of the desk. No matter how well a design like this works, if it is not something which will blend well into a home / office environment, then people will not purchase it.

CostTo require the payment of a particular sum. Short term costs include money needed for materials, wages, equipment and human resources needed to develop the design. Short term costs are important because it affects how much the desk will cost in total.

Long term costs include the environmental impacts involved with desk.Such impacts include:

Resource depletion Waste disposal Pollution during production and transportation

Long term costs are important because they can have long compounding circumstances which can be associated with social costs and poor health.

ErgonomicsDesigned for maximum comfort, efficiency, safety and ease of use between humans and their environment. My MDP will adhere to anthropometric tables for adults. So that important data such as eye level and length of arms are assessed for maximum comfort and ease of use for all age groups.

Use of designIs this design solution suitable for a variety of uses? My design is suitable for indoors only. This is due to the electronic components not being waterproof and also the moisture from outdoors would damage the wood. My design is also for use only with a computer. It is not designed for activities like sewing or eating. There is space in the drawers for storage and there is room on the top of the desk for paper work or reading.

SustainabilityUsing products of the forest in a way that does not permanently destroy them, so that people in the future can also use them. For production to be sustainable certain criteria must be made:

Materials should be 100% renewable Materials should be 100% recyclable or biodegradable at an acceptable rate

B.O.S. No. 17705911 http://www.stealthdesk.com27

Page 28: Year 12 major design projectmembers.optuszoo.com.au/stealthdesk/MDP.doc · Web viewDrill bits are still used, but they are used with a CAM compatible machine Drill bits are needed

Energy sources used in the product and the manufacturing processes should be environmentally friendly.

Any bi-products, waste and packaging should be biodegradable or recyclable.

The energy source used is unfortunately not sustainable; this is because the energy source used in production and use of the design is coming from a coal powered plant. Using coal as a fuel to produce electricity is not sustainable; as coal is non-renewable. The Brimsboard timber used is made from plantation Hoop Pine. By using this plantation timber, the timber used in this project is therefore sustainable and environmentally friendly.

EnergyThe capacity for doing work. Forms of energy include thermal, mechanical, electrical, and chemical as well as human.

- Human energy.Human energy is needed for: Word processing for portfolio. The construction of the desk and the electrical components. The transportation and assembly of the final product. Operating the computer and electrical actuator.

- Renewable / Non-renewable sources of energy.Energy needed during manufacture: Production of raw material (renewable; chipboard) Production of electrical components (non-renewable;

chemical waste, electricity, fossil fuels) Assembly of desk and electrical components (non-

renewable; electricity, fossil fuels. Renewable; human energy) Transportation of desk (non-renewable; fossil fuels,

carbon dioxide)

Energy needed during use: Operation of electrical components (non-renewable; electricity, carbon

dioxide. Renewable; human energy) Maintenance of desk (non-renewable; cleaning products. Renewable;

human energy) Possible upgrades to computer (non-renewable; transportation for

components, petrol, carbon dioxide. Renewable; human energy)

RecyclabilityTo process and convert waste or used material so it can be applied to a new use. My MDP uses recycled parts. Parts of the computer; e.g. the hard drive, RAM and graphic cards are from old computers that have been superseded.

Quality

The general standard or grade of something. My MDP has been made to quality standards. The computer has been made from quality parts, which are highly rated throughout the computer world. The materials used are quality parts and will be used to construct the modules. Different techniques are to be used for different parts of the project, by using different techniques I can make sure that each area gets the required attention needed.

DurabilityLasting for a long time, especially without sustaining damage or wear. Various factors affect durability; important factors include: environment and conditions where the desk is placed. My desk is highly durable and able to withstand the indoors environment that we live in. As mentioned before, my desk is not meant for the outdoors due to the electrical components and timber used.

ObsolescenceThe state of becoming obsolete by being replaced by something new. It is possible for my computer to become obsolete as new and better computer hardware is released every couple of months. For the average home user this computer will never be obsolete, but for the advanced gamer, it is possible that they may want to upgrade the graphics cards and CPU as new hardware is released. With the continual updating of computers it is possible that the size and shape may change in the near future, due to this I have made it possible that all computer parts may be changed as long as they are smaller than the original components.

SafetySafety is the condition of being protected against failure, damage, error, accidents, or harm. My desk will be safe and user friendly. The structure of the desk is being made to quality standards so that is stable to prevent it from breaking and becoming unsafe. When making this project it is important for me to follow strict OH & S rules so that in the event that something bad happens, I will be prepared and so will the people around me. One way to be sure I am always safe; is to always wear Person Protective Equipment this equipment is things such as:

Goggles Face mask Ear plugs Closed shoes Gloves Respirator Long sleeved clothes

3 MOST IMPORTANT FACTORS1. AESTHETICS2. NEEDS

B.O.S. No. 17705911 http://www.stealthdesk.com29

Page 30: Year 12 major design projectmembers.optuszoo.com.au/stealthdesk/MDP.doc · Web viewDrill bits are still used, but they are used with a CAM compatible machine Drill bits are needed

3. FUNCTION

If my project is not aesthetically pleasing, then why would someone buy it and put it in their house on show to people who visit their house. My desk will be able to blend with all different colour schemes so that it will be available to everyone.

If my project does not address the needs of people, then why would someone buy it just for the sake of buying it, then it would be considered a waste of money because it doesn’t do what they want it to do. My desk will address many needs so that it can meet most of them.

If the computer fails or the actuator fails constantly, then why would someone buy it? It would be deemed worthless because now they can’t sell it without spending money on it to fix it. Due to the actuator running on electricity is sure to burn out or break down due to wear and tear, by using a respective brand I hope that this happens in the long term and not the short.

My final selections have been based on budget, practicality and ease of use. Choosing the materials to test was a bad choice, as I already had clear polyurethane at home and if I had chose on an oil or wax; it would have cost more short and long term costs. If I had a higher budget I would have liked to try using a specialist router bit for the joining of the timber. Also due to time constraints I did not have a lot of time to research other forms of resources, tools and materials.

Please refer to portfolio book one to see my sketches.

Problems were encountered when trying to mount the top actuator clevise to the LCD frame. To overcome this, I sketched various designs and ways of mounting the actuator. When I had gone over all my sketches, I asked my Father what he thought of my sketches and ideas and together we collaborated out ideas to create a method of mounting the actuator.

Other ways of solving problems was to create a template so that I could check the size of objects to see if they would fit.

Videos have been used so that upon presentation and use of the desk, the actuator will not have to be raised and lowered every time someone wants to see how the desk works. By using videos, I have captures the moving motion of the actuator and there is nothing different as to seeing it up close.

I have decided to present my final portfolio as a website so that I can show friends and family what I have made. The desk is very big and rather people who are interested in my desk come to my house, they can view it on the website. Also, the computer forums that I am a part of; like to document and show people how they did their own computer modifications so that other people can learn. By making a website I will be able to more readily receive comments and constructive criticism.

My receipts, information sheets and sketches have been shown in an A3 folder because I believe that the greater size of the portfolio ill allow me to keep more items in there. Also by using black A3 sheets in between the plastic sheets, it shows contrast and draws attention when looking through the portfolio.

I am going to present my portfolio as a website; this is because it will be an exact replica of my website online except it will run off my computer so no internet is needed. By presenting it as an exact replica, the marker is able to see my graphic design skills and how I have structured the website for the public to view.

CONSIDERATION OF THE PRACTICES IN INDUSTRIAL/COMMERCIAL SETTINGS AS

THEY RELATE TO THE M.D.P.

Industrial Process - A systematic series of mechanical or chemical operations that produce or manufacture something.

My project belongs to the furniture and computing industry, this is because my project is an interest to both commercial and residential applications. The table is constructed to a professional standard and quality tools and materials have been used for the construction and finishing of the table. My project is mostly constructed of wood. Since mass production usually involves the use of cheaper and lower quality materials, since I am using Brimsboard as my timber, MDF or Chipboard may be compromised to maintain the strength. If my table was made on a production/assembly line, my design wouldn’t be unique, since there would be identical copies of my table. My design meets the anthropometric data requirements for ergonomics of a normal computer desk.

MANAGEMENT STRUCTURES AND PROCESSES

INDUSTRIAL AND COMMERCIAL PRACTICE

MDP

Structure of management

Hierarchy Me, only in charge of everything

Business size Many workers, all in different departments

One worker in charge of everything

Marketing Use profits to project target markets and advertise

Limited expenditure, very hard to catch peoples attention

Finance Large amount of finance, finance may increase if business is doing well. Also finances are managed by an accounting team or department.

Limited small amount of finances. I’m in charge of cash flow and expenditure.

Resource management Able to update tools as technology progresses and workers are expendable

Only I know the design truly, and limited finance means unable to use high technology tools for precise cuts and finishes

DESIGN AND PRODUCTION PROCESSESThe design process

Research and investigation

Ideas generation Experimentation Planning and

realizing Evaluation

They have a whole department committed towards R&D, marketing and designing the product. A lot of different analysis’s and diagnostics are performed before and after the product is produced.Industrial and commercial methods of evaluation includes: quality control, Australian standards and

My own research into what looks modern and is eye-catching as well as addresses my needs. I have looked at different types of timber tables and have chosen my own design.I will be testing different types of timber joins and methods of cutting and joining the timber.

B.O.S. No. 17705911 http://www.stealthdesk.com44

Page 45: Year 12 major design projectmembers.optuszoo.com.au/stealthdesk/MDP.doc · Web viewDrill bits are still used, but they are used with a CAM compatible machine Drill bits are needed

ergonomic requirements for the safety of the user.

My plans have been written and written all over again until everything is perfect and fits together, this will ensure minimal problems in the construction of the table. To evaluate my project, different people such as teachers, family and friends will assess my table depending on performance and aesthetics of my table

SAFETY ISSUESOH&S OH&S is managed by

WorkCover; A government body responsible for managing the State's workplace safety, injury management and workers' compensation programs. Industrial practices would include a professional dust extraction system. The building which manufacturing is completed would be designed and specially planned for OH&S hazards, quality control and efficient work practices

The building where a majority of woodworking will be completed is my garage. The garage wasn’t designed for wood working and OH&S hazards; this is why I have to wear a pair of ear muffs, safety goggles and a respirator or dust mask. I will be implementing my quality control requirements constantly so I will not have problems with my end result.

TECHNOLOGY COMMERCIAL SETTING

M.D.P.

BANDSAW A bandsaw would not be used due to its inaccuracy and high experience needed for a precise cut. In a commercial setting a CAM compatible machine is used.

The bandsaw is used to cut my drawers.

BISCUIT JOINER Biscuit joins would still be cut with a hand tool. Since it needs to be cut according to the size of the piece of timber

The biscuit joiner is used to cut holes in the BrimsBoard so that I can join my timber together.

B.O.S. No. 17705911 http://www.stealthdesk.com45

Page 46: Year 12 major design projectmembers.optuszoo.com.au/stealthdesk/MDP.doc · Web viewDrill bits are still used, but they are used with a CAM compatible machine Drill bits are needed

BISCUITS Biscuits are still needed and are put in place by hand

The biscuits are placed in the holes to join the timber

WEB CLAMPS Instead of web clamps, sash clamps are used. These are still put in place by a human

Clamps are used to keep the timber tightly joined when the glue is wet so that when the glue dries; the carcasses keep their shape

BENCH SAW A CAM compatible machine would be used to make the cuts, this reduces OH&S hazards and makes work more efficient

The bench saw is used to cut the pieces of timber to size and also cut the mitres on the sheets of timber

HOLE SAW A hole saw bit is still used but it can be attached to a CAM compatible drill or drill press.

The holesaw is used to cut holes on the side of the carcasses to allow the computer and electrical cables to be hidden.

JIG SAW A CAM compatible machine would be used to reduce risk of the blade snapping and makes work more efficient.

The jigsaw is used to cut the required gap for the rising LCD screen

ELECTRIC DRILL A CAM compatible machine would be used accurately pinpoint where the drilled holes need to be.

Used for pilot holes to stop the timber splitting and to use the hole saw and drill bits

BrimsBoard – Karri A cheaper chipboard would be used with a fake veneer. This reduces costs.

The timber is the main material used. Without this or a substitute; my project cannot be completed. BrimsBoard is made from plantation hoop pine.

PERSPEX A better application with sheet metal may be installed.

This is the material that the computer case will be made out of. I am

B.O.S. No. 17705911 http://www.stealthdesk.com46

using Perspex because you can see through it and instantly see any problems

DRAWER RUNNERS The same drawer runners would be used

Used for the 8 drawers that I will be part of the table

PVA GLUE The same glue; PVA, would be used

Used to ensure that all timber is joined strongly

Karri veneer strip A cheaper fake veneer would be used

Used around the sides of the drawers, because only the main faces have a veneer applied

HINGES The same hinges would be used

Used for the middle carcass, so that a door can be put in place for maintenance on the actuator

HANDLES The same or cheaper handles may be used

These are for the drawers, they are essential for entry to the drawers and also add a touch of a futuristic theme

CABLING The same cable would be used

Cables are required for electricity, so that the electrical and main features can be accessed

LCD SCREEN The LCD screen may be bought already without a case, thus cutting costs

The LCD screen is needed for the futuristic theme of this project. The LCD makes my project unique since it has never been hidden underneath the table.

WOOD SCREWS The same wood screws would be used. Screws may be screwed in with a CAM compatible machine

The wood screws are needed to strengthen the joints on the drawers. The screws are self-tapping which means they automatically

B.O.S. No. 17705911 http://www.stealthdesk.com47

countersink. This eliminates the need for extra work to change drill bits to a countersinking bit

ACTUATOR The same actuator would be used as no other sizes fit

The actuator is needed for the futuristic theme of this project. The actuator is the hidden motor that lifts the LCD screen

ELECTRICAL SWITCHES/BUTTONS/LIGHTS

Cheaper switches may be used

The switches and buttons are needed for the basic operation of the computer components and the actuator. The lights are needed as indicators for the computer.

RULER Instead of a ruler, a digital reading could be produced

Used to make sure all pieces are cut to size and proportions.

GLASS Glass is still needed The glass is used as the main feature and use when the computer is off

VINYL Vinyl is still needed The vinyl is used on the top of the table to give the table a antique type theme

DRILL BITS Drill bits are still used, but they are used with a CAM compatible machine

Drill bits are needed to drill pilot holes and screw in the screws

COMPUTER COMPONENTS Cheaper and less powerful computer components may be used, thus cutting costs

The computer components are important because they are needed to demonstrate the technological side of the project is working

MICROSOFT OFFICE Any word processing program may be used

Microsoft Office includes Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. All these programs are important for the typing

B.O.S. No. 17705911 http://www.stealthdesk.com48

Page 49: Year 12 major design projectmembers.optuszoo.com.au/stealthdesk/MDP.doc · Web viewDrill bits are still used, but they are used with a CAM compatible machine Drill bits are needed

and processing of my portfolio.

PHOTOSHOP CS 2 Any graphic design program may be used

Photoshop CS 2 is needed to produce the image for the etching in the glass

ProDesktop – CAD Any CAD program may be used

ProDesktop is needed to draw a 3D model of my table

PECILS Pencils are still used for concept sketching but not for measuring where to cut

Pencils are needed for concept sketching and measuring where to cut.

PENS Pens are used for general writing

Pens are used to write my drafts and for shading

PAPER Paper is still needed Paper is needed so that I can print out my portfolio

COMPUTER A computer is still needed for the computerised side of CAMs

The computer is needed for the word processing of the project

INTERNET Internet may be used as a research tool and marketing device

The internet is needed for research

TELEPHONE The telephone is essential for customers to inquire but also to place orders for more technologies

The telephone is needed to ring up companies for quotes and inquiries

CAR A truck s used to deliver the table

The car is used to pick up materials

COMMERCIAL PRACTICE

PEOPLEMy table applies to home owners or people leasing; who are computer literate and want to cut the cost on buying a new computer. It also applies to those people who do not have enough space in their dwellings for a computer table and a separate desk.

B.O.S. No. 17705911 http://www.stealthdesk.com49

Page 50: Year 12 major design projectmembers.optuszoo.com.au/stealthdesk/MDP.doc · Web viewDrill bits are still used, but they are used with a CAM compatible machine Drill bits are needed

PRODUCTMy table fits in the category of consumer goods as type; comparison goods. This is because to buy a desk you need to compare the different prices, measurements and comfort of operation. The same applies to the computer; the different specifications and prices need to be compared before a consumer decides on which item they are positive on buying.

It is possible that my table may be come part of a product line, this is possible if I plan on adding more computer components which could affect the overall cost of the table.

PRICEThe production costs still have not been calculated, but they are expected to be somewhere near $1500 - $2000. This includes labour and all materials needed. All of my materials are bought from different suppliers, in the case that the table is made commercially; the materials would need to be bought from suppliers closer to the place of manufacture. This will alter the sale price but it may be what the product needs to fast track its demand in the community.

Since my table is unique; it is hard to compare the prices for competition purposes. By comparing prices I am able to get a generalisation of prices and common needs and wants that consumers want when they buy a desk/table. My table is reasonably priced in contrast that a computer and a desk can be bought for under $2000; a computer of this calibre could even cost you $2000.

PLACEFor me it is hard to sell this table in batch proportions because I do not have a centralised place of manufacturing. I do not have all tools needed here at home. If I did have the tools required; then it most probably be best for me to sell the product over the internet and/or a specialty shop in particular; a furniture store. If I was to sell over the internet, I would have to add more money to the price for delivery or it could be a pick-up only item.

Larger companies usually situate their shops near hardware stores or nearby shops with a high turnover of customers. This works on the concept of complementary needs and inspiration. A customer from the hardware store may go for a browse through the furniture store and will see something they like, and probably either go ahead and make something similar or buy the product.

PROMOTIONI feel that the best way to promote my table is through advertising and sponsorship. If I was to be promoted by a well respected company, it would certainly boost the awareness and uniqueness of the table. If my table was to be advertised it would have to be visually represented, therefore eliminating radio. The best method of advertising for me would be through print media and television.

B.O.S. No. 17705911 http://www.stealthdesk.com50

Page 51: Year 12 major design projectmembers.optuszoo.com.au/stealthdesk/MDP.doc · Web viewDrill bits are still used, but they are used with a CAM compatible machine Drill bits are needed

My table would also need to be promoted in a place where it is seen and heard by the potential buyers; target market. It would be a waste of time and money if the table was advertised on television at a time when children’s programs are on. Larger companies promote their products from demonstrations or by showing their products at wood working shows. Larger companies also have more finances focused towards promotion of their product.

PACKAGINGThe only way that my table can be sold is fully assembled. It is possible that the carcasses could be sold flat packed, but then it would take some expertise to install the actuator into the middle carcass, and to install all the biscuits into the pre-cut holes. Selling this product with predrilled holes would make it a lot easier for the consumer to put the carcasses together. Then the aesthetic values of the table are wrecked because you would see the screws. If it was attempted to cover the screw heads, it would be even worse because a puttied hole would be very easy to see on a veneered design. If it was to be packaged; fully assembled, then each carcass would be wrapped in bubble wrap and each to an individual crate. The glass would also be wrapped and put in the same crate as the middle carcass.

Page 54: Year 12 major design projectmembers.optuszoo.com.au/stealthdesk/MDP.doc · Web viewDrill bits are still used, but they are used with a CAM compatible machine Drill bits are needed

FUNCTIONCriteria to evaluate Evaluation

Actuator must slide up and down smoothly

Yes, the actuator moves up and down smoothly, but it sounds as if halfway through it is rubbing on something. I have tried to see what is rubbing but I can’t see and areas of contact.

Drawers slide in and out smoothly

No, the drawers have become the biggest problem for the whole project. Some of the drawers are fine, but others stick out. The drawers are also rubbing on the inside track which is why they don’t slide smoothly, by sanding down some of the sides it should glide smoothly.

Modules must be easy to set up and dismantle

Yes modules are easy to set up. No problems with it except that you need to people because of the weight of the modules.

Computer boots off Operating system

No problems at all

Computer case design keeps temperatures of computer at a constant and there are no spikes in temperature readings

No problems at all, computer is running at temperatures averaging 22C which is quite cool since the average computer temperatures are close to 40C. The lower the temperature the better for my computer, this is because of the number of components inside it.

Wiring doesn’t get tangled when monitor moves up and down

This problem has been overcome by putting wire loom over all the cables associated with the monitor. The cables were made to size and then wrapped in the loom.

Monitor has no dead pixels No dead pixels present. Buttons on custom box work All buttons work perfectly, although the

serial connector must be screwed in using the thumb screws or else the connector keeps on popping out.

AESTHETICSCriteria to evaluate Evaluation

Wiring from computer cannot be seen

No problems here, the only time you see the wiring is when you open the computer drawer.

No unusual smells such as burning plastic.

No smells at all

All joints are square and flush

No, there are some small gaps between some of the mitres. I don’t want to fill them just yet because I need to first test

B.O.S. No. 17705911 http://www.stealthdesk.com54

what putty or stain to use. No rough surfaces; all surfaces are smooth

Some of the edges are a bit rough, this is because there is a gap between them, like the above step, I need to do more testing to find an appropriate putty or stain

Is able to blend with the colour schemes of most environments

Blends perfect with 3 rooms in my house, all 3 rooms had different coloured walls, so it proved to be fine.

Monitor has no dead pixels No dead pixels at all

My project is sustainable because majority of the materials and resources used are recyclable, which means they can be used over and over again. As it can be seen above, the main resource used is Brimsboard, it is made from plantation Hoop pine, and it is made specifically for this use so that it can be a renewable source.

My project to me achieves the design brief because the person that will be mainly using this desk is me. To achieve the design brief, the desk must be multi-purpose and match the needs of the target market and evaluating criteria. My desk is multi-purpose; it successfully poses as a writing desk and a computer desk. Through the evaluating criteria it can be seen that not everything went to plan. The drawers as mentioned above need a lot of work still so that they don’t stick when being pulled in and out. The edges of the table as well need some work so that they don’t splinter easily and start to come off from the Brimsboard.

My desk makes people feel safer because they will know that their most used and relied upon asset is kept hidden away to strangers. This desk will introduce some people towards the new types of technology there is out there.

The computer components used in this project have been recycled from my own computer.

I have completed everything as needed for the project proposal, everything I wanted to do, has been completed. The method as to which I carried out certain features did not go to plan, but problems were expected, and those problems were overcome by going back and changing a few things so that my original ideas could go to plan. I underestimated the amount of time it would take to build this and because of this, I was not able to complete a lot of portfolio work such as experimentations and research.

I have satisfied the original need of a multi-functioning desk. By satisfying the need, it should also satisfy the target market as well.

My evaluation was simple yet thorough, this is because my desk did not feature a lot of complex parts or a lot of moving parts that affect functionality. My evaluation aimed at testing the main design factors and the main features which will be used whenever the desk is used. The evaluation was a success because I was able to see where I went wrong and where to improve.

I believe that I went well with the project and that I did a good job. Some parts of the project which I didn’t do; welding and wiring were done by my Father. The reason I asked him to do it was because he had experience with welding and experience with wiring of 240V wires.

If I could improve this project, I would choose a smaller thickness of timber, because the 25mm that I have now is too heavy.
