ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Small school orientation This week Mullauna welcomed Grade 6 students to our Pre Orientation day. This day is held to welcome our new Year 7 students who are the only enrolment from their school. Students took part in music, science, sport and food technology classes. This was a great way for them to make new friends and to assist in their transition to high school. A great day was had by all!
Year 12 Art Students’ Success Those who attended our VCE Art Show will be well aware of the high quality of art our students have produced. It is with great pleasure that we congratulate two of our Year 12 students whose work has been publicly acknowledged. Congratulations Laura Harman of Year 12 Studio Arts whose amazing folio has been shortlisted for TOP ARTS 2018 as part of the VCE Season of Excellence. Top Arts celebrates the outstanding achievements of some of Victoria's most gifted young artists. It presents exceptional work from students who have completed Art or Studio Arts as part of the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE). We are proud to say that this is the fourth year in succession that Mullauna students’ work has been shortlisted and exhibited in Top Arts. Also, congratulations to Linda Date also of Year 12, who recently won 3rd prize at the Whitehorse Art Show (Schools Section). Linda’s prize-winning artwork is on display in our front foyer.

we have moved in to the exam period for the rest of the school, beginning with year 11 students this week. It is important for all students to carefully check their exam schedule and to check Compass for any updates relating to their exams. Ms Taglieri has been posting a series of ‘exam tips’ on the Compass newsfeed to help guide and prepare students in order to perform at their best. All the best to students undertaking exams over the next few weeks.
Year 12 Formal Having finished their exams, our Year 12 celebrated the end of their time at Mullauna College at the Year 12 Formal this week. The students looked spectacular in their finery. It has been said before, however, it always amazes me the transformation of our students in school uniform compared with the young adults we see at these events. A great time was had by all with much laughter and dancing. We were very proud to have been told by the manager at the Clarion that our students were the best behaved, most courteous, student function they had held. We wish our students all the best as they await the publication of their results in December and look forward to seeing them back to share their news.
Year 7 Gala This week our Year 7 students went out to compete in Ultimate Frisbee and Futsal as part of the Mullum District Program. This is an annual event which is very much enjoyed by all.
Bunnings BBQ We are excited to say that we raised a little over $2000 which will go towards paying for our new stage. We have put our name down for another Bunnings BBQ sometime in the future so if you were unavailable this time we look forward to your support for the next one. Thank you to the following for their support in running our BBQ:

Camps, Sports & Excursions Fund (CSEF) and Year 7 Uniform Allowance 2018
CSEF is available from the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities. If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families.
The allowance is paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child. The annual CSEF amount per student is $225 for secondary school students.
CSEF must be re-applied for each year. Contact the school office to obtain a CSEF application form or download the form from www.education.vic.gov.au/csef
Please note we require a copy of your Centrelink card with the application. Year 7 students who receive CSEF are entitled to a uniform pack. Information and application forms can be obtained from the school office.
Eligibility will be subject to the parent/legal guardian’s concession card being successfully validated with Centrelink on the first day of either term one (31 January 2018) or term two (18 April 2018).

MULLAUNA ARTS
Congratulations—Whitehorse Arts Show Prize
Congratulations—Top Arts 2018 Exhibition
Congratulations to Laura Harman of Year 12! Her fantastic Studio Arts folio has been Shortlisted for the VCE Season of Excellence Top Arts 2018 Exhibition. Laura applied in October for the exhibition which showcases a range of the best Art and Studio Arts folios from across the State. On Monday 4 December Laura is required to take all of her Folio book work and finished artworks to the VCAA Assessment Centre in Coburg so that the selection panel can view the work and make the final decisions. Laura will then be notified in January as to whether or not she will be accepted into the Exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria. Laura’s achievement now makes it four years in a row for a Mullauna Studio Arts student to be shortlisted for this prestigious exhibition. We wish Laura the best and it is an accolade for her to get this far in the process.
Ms Rebecca Holmes Visual Arts Coordinator (Images of Laura’s artwork are displayed on the following page.)
A well earned congratulations to Linda Date (Year 12 Studio Arts) whose beautiful and meaningful artwork entitled 'Now you see me, Now you don't' was awarded third prize in the Schools division. Linda's artwork comprises a drawing of a tiger surrounded by the seemingly burning foliage of the jungle...a strong comment on man's destruction of our precious environment. The Judge Barbara McManus is a well respected artist, who herself has been the recipient of more than 50 awards. She spoke about the conceptual aspects, technical skill and creativity of Linda's work. Linda's amazing work will be on display in the school foyer for a few weeks after the Art Show for everyone to enjoy.

MULLAUNA INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
Some of the anomalies faced by students at Mullauna College with English as an
Additional Language
The significance of Structural Words to understanding the English Language. Those little words have a big lot of meaning.
Structural words are monosyllabic and unstressed and found in any kind of normal English, spoken or written, literary or technical, slang or sermon, in any register, these words are passed over in coherent English speech without much notice or stress. There are approximately 600 of these words and each of them has many different meanings. Often native speakers never really learn these words in a formal way. They are deceptively “easy” words such as THE, A, OF, IN, THIS, IS ARE, HAS, AND, DO, DID, DOES etc. They are left out in conversation much of the time when the context is understood or visible. These words however, cannot be neglected when ideas have to be precise and when the context is not visible. Thus they become more important as the ideas expressed become intangible and abstract and as the need for higher order thinking is required. We can speak the English language without using the words MAN, WOMAN, BREAD, WATER, LIVE or DIE, but we cannot guarantee an understanding of English without using THE or A. Example ‘the’ one of the 600 structural or functional words. In Mathematics:
Identification of what meaning is exactly being conveyed.
“The” indicating a Total. In fifteen scenes of “Othello” all principal characters appear. In the fifteen scenes of Othello all principal characters appear. (The second sentence indicates there is a total of 15 scenes)
She took a lolly. She took another lolly. She took another lolly. She took a lolly. She took the other lolly. (The first group indicates no total); (the second group conveys a total of two)
What sum? What is the sum? What’s a sum? What total? What’s the total? What’s a total? (First requests directions, the second addition, the third definitions)

In general the inclusion of the in the prepositional phrase indicates a change from a condition to a place.

(Characteristic of a location) (Used alternatively) They’re on the order. They’re on order. (Refers to a list) (Refers to a condition)
