Why is QCS important and what

impact does it have?

Figure 1 shows a painting by Doris (“Dod”) Procter. It portrays a young Indian

woman at the time she moved from India to England to marry Procter’s brother (in

1919). The background of the painting shows the coast of Cornwall in southern

England, the area to which she moved.

Queensland Core Skills Test• The QCS Test contributes information for the calculation of

Overall Positions (OPs) which are used to select students for university entrance.

• 4 papers:

-Writing Task (600 words)

-Short Response

-2x Multiple Choice papers

• The results achieved for each of the 4 test papers are combined into one grade, ranging from A to E.

• Variety of stimulus materials, such as prose passages, poetry, graphs, tables, maps, mathematical and scientific data, cartoons and artistic works.

importance of the QCS test?

• How well students perform as a cohort on QCS will have a

huge impact on individual results.

QCS preparation program at BSHS

• Students are being asked to complete practice multiple

choice questions via survey monkey-once a fortnight.

• Whole group information sessions later in Term 3 and early

Term 4.

• Practice QCS test early in Term 4.

• QCS preparation in ARC from Term 4 and throughout Year

12.

What is an Overall Position (OP)?

• OP = Overall Position

• student's position in a state wide rank order

based on their overall achievement in authority

subjects.

• OP1 (highest) to OP25 (lowest)

• Students seeking an OP:

– Authority Subjects contribute

– At least 3 of 6 subjects must remain unchanged

through Years 11 & 12

– Sit the Queensland Core Skills Test (QCS)

• 5 Achievement bands:

– Very High Achievement (VHA)- Very Limited Achievement (VLA)

• Achievement bands separated into 10 rungs

• Each student assigned a SAI (subject achievement indicator).

• Score between 400 and 200.

• SAIs show individual achievement compared with the achievement of other students in each subject at BSHS.

Provisional OP meeting

• What happens in the Provisional OP meeting?

Provisional OP meetings

• 3 meetings across Year 11 and 12 (Semesters 1, 2 & 3)

• Experienced learning mentors (Principal, Dean of Students,

Dean & Deputy Deans of Teaching and Learning, Head of

Junior/Senior School, Head of Support Services, Heads of

Year, Heads of Department, Guidance Officers).

• 20 minute conversation

• Preparation=completed reflection Qs & learning goals

(students had time to work on this in ARC last week).

• Students will take home documentation & this will be also be

sent home to parents.

• QTAC (course search)

How are provisional OP results

calculated?

• Uses student achievement at end of Semester 1.

• QCS subject means & school mean (5 year average).

• OP Cut-off parameters (5 year average).

• “Provisional OP range” not a “prediction”. Multiple

variables: cohort performance on QCS, how other students

perform in subjects & subject means.

Provisional OP timelines

• Begin this week and continue into Week 5.

• Students will receive an email regarding the provisional

OP meeting time. (It is expected that students set a

reminder and come with prepared resources to the

meeting).

• If students cannot attend the meeting, it is their

responsibility to let their learning mentor know.

Provisional OP Score Summary

Z Sub= This indicates

how far above or below

the cohort subject mean

the student is.

SAIs show one student’s achievement in relation to the

achievement of other students in that subject in that

school. SAIs range from 400 (highest performing

student in that subject in that school) to 200 (lowest

performing student in that subject in that school). This

is regardless of your level of achievement.

Scaled Subject Achievement Indicator.

This number determines the order that the

subjects contribute to the provisional OP-

the higher the number, the higher the

contribution.

Provisional OP Score Summary

OAI= Overall Achievement Indicator. The OAI indicates how well a

student has performed across the Years 11 and 12 subjects,

compared with all other students in the same school. The OAIs

indicate a rank order for all OP-eligible students within the school.

Scaled= Scaled OAIs provide a single rank order for the whole State. These

scaled OAIs compare each student with all other students in the State,

regardless of their combination of subjects and regardless of the school

attended.

Selection Rank Pathways

Pathway options

• For some students it will be better to complete a

certificate course and use the Selection Rank to get into

university rather than an OP.

• Our priority is to open up pathway options for students.

• Students will have very limited university course choices

when it comes to university courses with an OP15-25.

• Students can still go for an OP with 5 Authority subjects

and a certificate or Diploma course. We have a large

number of students on this pathway.
