Written tasksStudents produce at least three written tasks based on material studied in the course.Students submit ONE of these tasks for external assessment.It must be a Written Task One

Paper 1: Comparative textual analysis (90 mins)The paper consists of two pairs of unseen texts.Students write a comparative analysis of one pair of texts.

Paper 2: Essay (90 mins)In response to one of six questions students write an essay based on at least two of the literary texts studied in part 3 (The Reader; 1984, The Merchant of Venice). The questions are the same at SL but the assessment criteria are different.

e.g. Martin Luther King; Editorials; Poetry in translations; Advertisements

Language Focus:• Analyse how audience and purpose affect the structure and content of texts.• Analyse the impact of language changes.• Demonstrate an awareness of how language and meaning are shaped by culture and

context.

Term One and Term Two – Year 11

Unit: Part 3: Literature—texts and contexts

Language Focus:• Consider the changing historical, cultural and social contexts in which particular texts are• written and received.• Demonstrate how the formal elements of the text, genre and structure can not only be seen

to• influence meaning but can also be influenced by context.• Understand the attitudes and values expressed by literary texts and their impact on readers.

Language Focus:• Examine different forms of communication within the media.• Show an awareness of the potential for educational, political or ideological influence of the• media.• Show the way mass media use language and image to inform, persuade or entertain.

Term One - Year 12

Part 4: Literature—critical studySet Text/s: • The Reader – by Bernhard Schlink• 1984 – by George Orwell• Merchant of Venice – by William Shakespeare

Language Focus:• Explore literary works in detail.• Analyse elements such as theme and the ethical stance or moral values of literary texts.• Understand and make appropriate use of literary terms.

Assessment:• Written Task One – DUE 9TH JUNE 2014• Written Task Two – DUE 9TH JUNE 2014• Paper Two – DUE 9TH MAY 2014• Paper Two – DUE 14TH JULY 2014• Paper Two – DUE 30TH JULY 2014

Term Two and Term Three - Year 12

• Reporting will occur four times per year - Interim reports Terms 1 and 3 - Full written reports Terms 2 and 4• Reports will include - Summative Grade Where the student is performing - Target Grade Negotiated target Summative grades are determined from subject specific criteria which generate a 1 – 7 grade.

• Homework will be set by the teacher to support the teaching and learning

– Close reading of texts– Academic readings– Writing tasks associated with assessment– Examination preparation
