Use the myfuture website to start your career exploration.

Go to: www.myfuture.edu.au to take the first steps to managing your career.

On the webpage there is a link called Sign up where you can create your own login account and save results from your explorations. You can do this free of charge using your school email address. For videos on how to sign up and complete tasks click here.

Once you have signed up you will be prompted to login using your login name and password.

Make sure you remember your login name and password as you will need these to log on later to view your saved information.

On the Jobs and careers tab, click on Get that Job and then Occupations to search various occupations that may be of interest to you.

Scroll down to the A-Z list. List four extra occupations from the list that you would like to research further. What training is listed for these? Can you do an Apprenticeship or Traineeship in this occupation?

Vocational Education and Training (VET) at your school Vocational Education and Training (VET) focuses on providing skills for work. It covers a large number of careers and industries like trades and office work, retail, hospitality and technology. Qualifications range from Certificate II to Certificate IV, Diploma and Advanced Diploma. For many schools this is the beginning of your training journey.

Certificate courses

Find out about certificates that are offered at your school (the VET coordinator at your school can help you).

If your school offers many certificates, list just three certificates which interest you.

Training through public and private training providers (RTO’s)

It can be useful to consider courses available outside of your school. Some of these may be accessible to you whilst you are still enrolled in school. Other courses can be kept in mind for the future or as a full time alternative to Years 11/12.

There are five TAFE colleges in Western Australia: North Metropolitan, South Metropolitan, Central Regional, South Regional and North Regional. Each college has a number of campuses.

When searching for a course you can also use industry words like ‘hairdressing,’ ‘business’ or ‘construction’.

Within that industry area select a specific course you think might be right for you by clicking on the title of a course, eg Certificate II Hairdressing. This will bring up a screen with information about the entrance requirements, location/s and employment opportunities for your chosen course.

A very important piece of information is the entrance requirements. Entry to TAFE is quite different from university admission. There may be a need to demonstrate or prove your skills, experience or academic achievement for competitive courses.

If you meet the entrance requirements for a course that interests you, it is worth pursuing further information. If you do not meet the entry requirements, consider how you might acquire them (eg if you would like to do a Certificate III, but it requires a Certificate II to enter, then look at the Certificate II course first).

Admission to TAFE

There are a variety of ways to complete a qualification through TAFE, including online or face-to- face at a specific campus. As part of the application process you may be required to collect and present documents in a portfolio such as:

• Reference from work

• School report

• Work place learning feedback or report

• Practical or artistic samples (usually photographed)

• Evidence from any other experiences, eg Other qualifications, volunteering, etc.

If you want to apply for a course it is a good idea to seek the assistance of a school representative (such as a VET Coordinator) or a course counsellor from TAFE or seek assistance via the Contact us tab of the course.

For further current information about the future jobs outlook and labour relations data in Australia go to the Federal Government careers website at: joboutlook.gov.au

There are several ways to explore this. You can do the Skills match Quiz to find jobs that use your already developed skills. Future outlook highlights areas of future growth. Choose an industry from the drop down menu and click search to display career outlooks in the different areas of the selected industry including average pay, growth predictions and job growth data.
